THOMPSON
John W. Thompson, 79, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at his residence. Mr. Thompson was born June 20, 1921, in Durham to John and Rosa Thompson. He lived in Winston-Salem for 40 years. He was a manager of Singer Sewing Machine Co. for many years as well as owner-operator of Thompson Sewing Machine. Mr. Thompson was a longtime member of Knollwood Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry; a granddaughter; and three brothers. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Louise Green Thompson; a son, Dennis Thompson; three daughters, Lori Stovall and husband Wayne, Lana Fitzgerald and husband Bob and Debbie Smith and husband Bob; three grandchildren; and a very special granddaughter, Cheree Stovall. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at Knollwood Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to Knollwood Baptist Church, 330 Knollwood St., Winston-Salem, NC 27104 or to Senior Services, 836 Oak St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Chapel.

VADEN
WALNUT COVE -- Mrs. Eunice Mae Flinchum Vaden, 72, of Walnut Cove died Thursday at the Sticht Center. Mrs. Vaden was born Dec. 22, 1927, in Stokes County to the late Percy and Pearl Gray Flinchum. She was retired from Burlington Mills and was a member of Faith Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Vaden and Gloria Vaden , both of Walnut Cove; two sisters, Grace Boles of Rural Hall and Ruth James of Walnut Cove; and two brothers, William Flinchum of Clemmons and Jack Flinchum of King. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Flat Shoals Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Brian Johnson will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith Baptist Church, c/o Sharon White, 1406 Sizemore Road, Germanton, NC 27019. Burroughs Funeral Home is serving the Vaden family.

WEATHERLY
The Rev. Mr. Theodore L. Weatherly, 73, of Winston-Salem died Friday afternoon at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Montrose, Pa. , on Dec. 3, 1926, to the Rev. Mr. Ralph Armfield Weatherly and Helen Ware Weatherly. The Rev. Weatherly served Episcopal congregations in Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina prior to retirement. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Turner Weatherly of the home; a daughter, Elizabeth W. Dunford of Philadelphia; three sons, Stephen James Weatherly of Philadelphia, Philip Gregory Weatherly of Lawrenceville, Ga. , and David Michael Weatherly of Atlanta; four grandchildren; a sister, Carol Tallmadge of Mount Laurel, N.J.; and a brother, the Rev. Mr. Bruce Armfield Weatherly of Charlottesville, Va. A memorial service is being planned.

BOOKER
Judge James Booker passed away Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at Hospice of Winston-Salem. He was born Jan. 24, 1926, in Apex to the Rev. E.B. and Lucille Booker. He graduated from Fayetteville High School and Duke University Law School. He was a veteran of World War II and served with the naval Dive Bomber Squadron from the USS Ticonderoga. He was a special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in New York City from 1951 to 1954 and had a general practice of law in Winston-Salem for approximately 32 years. He was elected to the Board of Alderman in 1961 and served for two years. In 1989 Governor appointed him the first Republican Resident Superior Court Judge in Forsyth County. In 1991 he became chairman of the N.C. Industrial Commission and resided in Raleigh for five years before returning to Winston-Salem. He was formerly secretary of the Forsyth County Bar Association, member of the N.C. Bar, Federal District Bar Association, past president of Forsyth County Junior Bar Association and state chairman of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI. He was chairman of Forsyth County N.C. GOP Lawyers Association and the Forsyth County Republican party and member of N.C. GOP Executive Committee. He was past president of the Twin City Sertoma Club, past president of the Winston-Salem Sertoma Club, chairman of the Citizens Advisory Council and member of the Board of Trustees of Forsyth Medical Center. He was chairman of the board of deacons and a Sunday school teacher at Knollwood Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Anne Elmore Booker; two children, Dorothy Booker Moore of Gastonia and James Booker Jr. of Charlotte; a son-in-law, Mark Moore; a daughter-in-law, Erien Booker; and four grandchildren, Kassie and MaryBeth Moore and Kyle and Alexander Booker. Also remaining are a brother, John Booker of Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy O'dendhal of Centerreach, N.Y.; a niece and nephew; and many treasured friends in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7 at Voglers on Reynolda Road. The memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at Knollwood Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to Knollwood Baptist Church or Hospice of Winston-Salem.

EVERHART
MIDWAY -- Betty Donley Everhart of Clodfelter Road died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem after declining health of two years. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept . 6 at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel , with the Rev. Harry Sellers Jr. and Pastor Mike Gates officiating. Burial will be at Midway United Methodist Church Cemetery. She was born Aug. 2, 1919, in Henry County, Va. , to Jackson Donley and Hattie Lee Richardson Donley. She was a homemaker and a member of Midway United Methodist Church. Surviving are a brother, Larry Lawson Donley of Martinsville, Va. , and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Midway United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 9795 Old Highway 52 N., Lexington, NC 27295 or to Hospice of Winston-Salem, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

GRAY
Mrs. Jo Anne H. Gray, 60, of 5132 Britt Drive passed away Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was a native and resident of Winston-Salem born June 17, 1940, to the late Jesse and Lossie Hampton. She was a member of the Kimberly Park Holiness Church where she served on the usher board. Jo Anne was a retired employee of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and was a graduate of Atkins High School, class of 1958. She is survived by her husband, Vernon Gray Jr. of the home; four children, Veronica G. Black, Sonya G. Revels (Gary), all of Jacksonville, Lisa G. Smith of Winston-Salem and Vernon Gray III of Marshville; five grandchildren, Sherman L. Revels, Sheree S. Revels, Eric Jamarr Black, Derrick Reshawn Black and Tesyana Jolisia Smith; four sisters, Mozelle Caesar (Jimmy), Johnnie Mae Durant (James) and Lossie Amason (Alphonso), all of Winston-Salem, and Inez Gray (Sammie Lee) of Walkertown; two brothers, Paul Hampton (Virginia) of Walkertown and Jesse Hampton Jr. (Eleanor) of Huntsville, Ala.; two aunts, Evelyn Phillips of Winston-Salem and Ruby Leach of Advance; several nieces, nephews and relatives; and a special family friend, Vincent Hayes. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at the Kimberly Park Holiness Church with Elder Robert Edmonds officiating. Interment will be in the Piney Grove Methodist Church Cemetery, Advance. The family visitation will be from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Funeral services for Pearlie Ophelia Hardy of 519 W. 23rd St. will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at Mercy Seat Holiness Church with Bishop T.R. Rice officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon at 1 p.m. at the church. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from the residence. HILTON
LEXINGTON -- Mrs. Ethel Hedrick Hilton, 90, died Monday, Sept. 4, at Sunbridge Nursing Home. A graveside service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, at Forest Hill Memorial Park conducted by the Rev. Roger Weisner. Surviving are a son, Jerry L. Everhart of Lexington; a daughter, Peggy S. Cole of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers; and three sisters. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Memorials may be made to Christ Chapel United Methodist Church, c/o Ken Harper, 316 Northside Drive, Lexington, NC 27295.

HUNTER
Mrs. Carolyn Ann Allen Hunter, 64, of 800 Ransom Road, died at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Saturday evening. She had been in declining health since 1984. Mrs. Hunter was born in Winston-Salem on Aug. 26, 1936, to Robert Monroe Allen, Sr. and Carolyn Thornton Hunter. She graduated from Old Town High School in 1954 and from Wake Forest University in 1959. Mrs. Hunter taught school in the elementary grades for 12 years, retiring due to her health. She was a charter member of College Park Baptist Church. Preceding her in death was her father in 1975. Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, James Melvin Hunter Jr. of the home; her daughter, Emma Elizabeth Hunter Royall; her son, James Melvin Hunter, III; one grandson, Sean-Thomas Royall; and a sister, Charlotte Elizabeth Allen Langley, all of Winston-Salem; and one brother, Robert Monroe Allen Jr. of Rockford. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at College Park Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Charles Edwards, Pastor. Memorials may be made to the College Park Baptist Church Building Fund, 1701 Polo Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the family.

JOE
Mr. Charlie Lee Joe II of 51 Robinhood Circle passed away Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was a native of this city and a retired employee with Westinghouse and presently operation manager with Twin City Warehouses. Mr. Joe was a member of Friendship Baptist Church where he was a trustee, church treasurer and a member of the Laymen League and Friendship Married Couples. He was a board member of the CIAA officials Hall of Fame, CIAA Official and North State Football Association. Mr. Joe was a former Westinghouse Loan Executive for the United Way of Forsyth County and a former board member of the Forsyth Cancer Services. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mrs. Ether Sims Joe of the home; two children, Erica L. Joe-Baker (Jay) of Rural Hall and Charlie L. Joe III of Durham; two grandchildren, Jada Shalome Baker and Iyon Manesseh Baker, both of Rural Hall; his mother, Julia Scales of California; his father, Charlie Joe (Elizabeth) of Florida; four sisters, Betty M. Watson (Lorenzo) and Roberta Joe, both of Winston-Salem, Sandra Gibbs (Terry) of California and Bernadette Madoux (Daryl) of Maryland; five brothers, William Pickens, Johnny Joe and Larry Joe (Pam), all of Winston-Salem, Willie Lane of Ohio and Ray Joe of New Jersey; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at the Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. S.E. Tydall officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon to lie in state until the service hour with public viewing only during the period of family visitation from 1 to 2. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the WSSU Nursing Scholarship Program or to Friendship Baptist Church Library Fund.
