THURMOND -- Mrs. Marie UpChurch Harris, age 85, of 2496 Thurmond Road, Thurmond, N.C., died Friday morning, Sept . 17, 1999 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was the widow of Rhea Neal Harris. She is survived by two sons, Billy Neal Harris and Bobby Neal Harris, both of Thurmond; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one great, great grandchild; and four sisters, Mattileen Vickerman of Laurel Springs, N.C., Elanor Harding of Balitmore, Md., Doris Nance of Burlington, N.C., and Christine Petty of Greensboro, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., Monday, Sep t. 20 at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with burial to follow in Glade Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 -9 at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.
HAYES
WALNUT COVE -- Mr. Estel ''Henry'' Hayes, 83, a resident of Walnut Cove Health Care, died Thursday, September 16, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Hayes was a native of Wilkes County. He was born November 23, 1915, the son of the late Robert and Maudie Baugus Hayes. He was of the Baptist faith and had attended Freedom Baptist Church in Rural Hall while health permitted. Surviving are two daughters, Linda Knight and Jacqueline Sheilds, both of Walnut Cove; three sons, Billy Hayes of East Bend, Boyd Hayes of Winston-Salem, and Larry Hayes of Davie County; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Grace Lovette of Asheville and Bernice Thompson of Fairplains. A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 20 at Mountlawn Memorial Park in North Wilkesboro by Rev. John T. Byerly. The family will receive friends following the service. There will be no public visitation, but the family may be contacted at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Linda Knight, in Walnut Cove. HINE
Grace Gentry Hine, died Friday, September 17, 1999 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther McKinley Hine. Mrs. Hine was born in Surry County on March 25, 1907 to the late Anderson H. and Electra Gray Gentry. Mrs. Hine was an active member of Friedland Moravian Church as long as health permitted. Mrs. Hine was also charter member of the Ou-to-Gro Garden Club. She was well known for her Moravian cookie baking, furnishing cookies at Old Salem for many years. She was preceded in death by her sister, Alma G. Sweatman; and a brother, Wiley A. Gentry. Surviving are two daughters, Ann H. Snipes and husband, Bob, of Winston-Salem and Jane H. Motsinger and husband, James, of Castle Hayne, N.C.; grandsons, Bryan and Mark Snipes, and Kent Motsinger; two granddaughters, Marianne Smith and Sara Barefoot; 11 great grandchildren; and two loyal caregivers, Ellen Graham and Wanda Minton. To her friends and family, she was truly an ''Amazing Grace''. Funeral services will be held at Friedland Moravian Church, Sunday, September 19 at 2:30 p.m. by Dr. Steve E. Craver. LEGGETT
Luther W. Leggett, Jr., formerly of 2108 E. 25th St., was born October 17, 1933 in Laurinburg, N.C. to the late Luther and Harriet Leggett, Sr. He was a resident of Winston-Salem for most of his life, where he was formerly employed with N.C. Baptist Hospital and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Mr. Leggett was a member of Bethlehem Holiness Apostolic Church. He departed this life early Thursday morning, September 16, 1999 at the Forsyth Village Assisted Living Center following a period of illness. He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn L. Covington. Survivors include a devoted cousin and caregiver, Paula McCoy; several other cousins, including Estella (Deario) McFadden, all of Winston-Salem, and Jerrie (Eddie) Dean of Atlanta, Ga.; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m., Monday, September 20 at Bethlehem Holiness Apostolic Church. Rev. Carl T. Motley will be the eulogist, and interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service hour (2-2:30 p.m.) at the church. (HOOPER)

KING -- Mrs. Concetta Zichettella McCaughan, 72, died at her home September 15, 1999 following a period of declining health. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., she was born October 12, 1926 to John and Sebastiana Barraco Zichettella. Mrs. McCaughan was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Harry E. McCaughan; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Richard Tadlock of Germanton; three grandsons, Eric and Matthew Powers, and Ernie Tadlock; one granddaughter, Deanna Hatcher; three grandchildren, Zack and Dustin Hatcher, and Destiny Eller; and one sister, Mary Amendolia of New York. Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 20 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church (King, N.C.), officiated by Father Larry Hunt. Burial will follow in King Memorial Park. McLAURIN
Margaret McLaurin, a.k.a. ''Big Ma'', age 82, of 3731 University Parkway, Apt. 214, passed away Thursday, September 16, 1999 at WFU/Baptist Medical Center. She was born February 14, 1917 in Red Springs, N.C. to the late James Arthur and Hortence Bilbor McLaurin. Margaret moved to Winston-Salem 44 years ago and was a domestic worker for many years until her health failed. She then became a caretaker for her great grandchildren and others. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lula McLaurin Barnes. Survivors include two sons, Earl N. and Tieldon O. McLaurin, both of Winston; one daughter-in-law, Edna McLaurin; two brothers, Willie McLaurin of Winston-Salem and Robert McLaurin of Clinton, N.C.; grandchildren, whom she raised, Pamela McLaurin Polite and Cheryl Renee McLaurin, both of Winston-Salem, Franklin Delona Barnes of Greensboro; and great grandson, DeCarlos R. McLaurin of Winston-Salem. Other surviving grandchildren include Janice Hampton, Curtis Odell, and Reginald, Danny Ray, Sharon, and Cheryl Y. McLaurin, all of Winston-Salem. She also leaves, to cherish her memory, a host of great grandchildren; one great, great grandchild; and several devoted nieces; nephews; other relatives, and friends. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 20 at 2:00 p.m. at Uncompromising Word Fellowship, where Paster Bobbie Jones will officiate, and interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. EAST BEND -- Mr. Carl G. Miller, 87, of 3604 Union Hill Road, died Saturday, September 18, 1999 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a short illness. He was born in Yadkin County on January 3, 1912 to Benjamin H. and Mahalia Shore Miller. Mr. Miller was of the Baptist faith and attended Northwood Baptist Church. He was retired from Duplan and was also a retired farmer. Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his first wife, Ila Mae Sprinkle Miller; seven brothers; one sister; and a granddaughter, Deana Marie Hutchens. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Webb Miller, of the home; three daughters, Jerlean (Billy Gene) Hutchens of Yadkinville, Betty M. Smitherman of Wilmington, and Marie (Richard Dean) Hutchens of Yadkinville; one son, Hurley (Rachel) Miller of Yadkinville; one brother, Harvey Miller of Yadkinville; eight grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, September 20 at 2:00 p.m. at Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by Rev. Hubert Wishon and Preacher Joel Vestal. MILLER
God saw fit to pick from His garden, a beautiful rose, Mrs. Mozelle Lambeth Miller. Joy for her came early on the morning of September 17, 1999. Mrs. Miller was born July 1, 1907 to the late Simon P. and Bertha Lambeth in Forsyth County in the Vienna community. She was married to the late Conrad A. Miller in 1928, who preceded her in death in 1974. She became a member of Bethlehem A.M.E. Zion Church at a very early age, where she served as an organist, choir member, class leader, missionary, Sunday school teacher/secretary, and was the founder of the Women's Service Council. Her Chris tian convic tions were deep and strong as she por trayed it in her spirit as a Christian worker, always ready and willing to serve. She was also a member of the Good Neighbor Community Club in the Oldtown community. She was also preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Mrs. Ophelia Glenn. Her survivors are one devoted and caring sister, Nicie Lambeth of Pfafftown; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Beulah Miller of Winston-Salem; one brother-in-law, Mr. A. K. (Evelyn) Sellars of Winston-Salem; a devoted cousin, Miss Pauline G. Blount of Pfafftown; a very dear and loving friend, Miss Alma Joyce of Bethania; six step grandchildren, Leon (Christine), Chester of Pa., Spencer (Avenida) Glenn of Winston-Salem, Vickie (James) Williams of Durham, Vance (Patricia) of Tucson, Ariz., Penella (Mustafa) Karabi of Manheim, Germany, and Gary (Vickie Glenn) of Winston-Salem; three nephews, George N. Kimbrough (Aletha) of Detroit, Mich., Albert Kimbrough, Jr. of Calif., and Sandy Miller of Winston-Salem; three nieces, Mildred (Sam) Durnell of Detroit, Mich., Louise Shouse of Winston-Salem, and Virginia M. NEW LONDON -- Rev. Vernon Adam Morton, 92, of 729 Uwharrie Point, New London, N.C., died Friday, September 17, 1999. Rev. Morton was a retired minister in the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, and had served a number of churches since being ordained in 1929. He is survived by a son, Bruce Morton, of Fancy Gap, Va.; a daughter, Romona Clapp and husband, Donald, of Kernersville; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; two brothers; and one sister. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 20 at Uwharrie United Methodist Church, with interment in the church cemetery. RAWLINGS
Mr. Clarence Wilmot Rawlings, Jr., 90, formerly of W. Country Club Rd., Winston-Salem, died Friday morning, September 17, 1999 in Raleigh following a period of declining health. He was born in Winston-Salem on January 3, 1909 to Clarence Wilmot Rawlings, Sr. and Eva Tise Rawlings. He served as an officer with the U.S. Army during World War II, seeing duty in Italy and N. Africa. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1968. Mr. Rawlings was a longtime member of Centenary United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Lowe Rawlings, in 1997. Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Janet R. McGraw and her husband, Dr. James Robert McGraw, of Cary; two grandsons, James Robert McGraw, Jr. of Cary and MIDN 2/C Wilson Rawlings McGraw of the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md.; and two sisters, Mrs. Martha R. Hodgin of Charlotte and Mrs. Nancy R. Baity of Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Vogler Reynolda Rd. Chapel, conducted by Rev. Roland Barnhardt. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the parlor of the funeral home.
