BODENHAMER
KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Mabel Robbins Bodenhamer, 90, of 1530 Bunker Hill-Sandy Ridge Road, formerly of 1817 Union Cross Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000 at Bradford Village East. She was born on July 25, 1910, in Forsyth County. A daughter of Charlie Oscar and Viola Lee Williard Robbins. She retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system, where she worked in the cafeteria. She was a member of Union Cross Moravian Church. Surviving are a daughter, Imogene B. Idol of Kernersville; a son, Harold Glenn Bodenhamer of Trinity; a sister, Hattie Weavil of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Glenn Robbins and Oscar Robbins of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Union Cross Moravian Church by Dr. James L. Doss. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. BOOKER
Judge James Booker passed away Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at Hospice of Winston-Salem. He was born Jan. 24, 1926, in Apex to the Rev. E.B. and Lucille Booker. He graduated from Fayetteville High School and Duke University Law School. He was a veteran of World War II and served with the naval Dive Bomber Squadron from the USS Ticonderoga. He was a special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in New York City from 1951 to 1954 and had a general practice of law in Winston-Salem for approximately 32 years. He was elected to the Board of Alderman in 1961 and served for two years. In 1989 Governor appointed him the first Republican Resident Superior Court Judge in Forsyth County. In 1991 he became chairman of the N.C. Industrial Commission and resided in Raleigh for five years before returning to Winston-Salem. He was formerly secretary of the Forsyth County Bar Association, member of the N.C. Bar, Federal District Bar Association, past president of Forsyth County Junior Bar Association and state chairman of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI. He was chairman of Forsyth County N.C. GOP Lawyers Association and the Forsyth County Republican party and member of N.C. GOP Executive Committee. He was past president of the Twin City Sertoma Club, past president of the Winston-Salem Sertoma Club, chairman of the Citizens Advisory Council and member of the Board of Trustees of Forsyth Medical Center. He was chairman of the board of deacons and a Sunday school teacher at Knollwood Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Anne Elmore Booker; two children, Dorothy Booker Moore of Gastonia and James Booker Jr. of Charlotte; a son-in-law, Mark Moore; a daughter-in-law, Erien Booker; and four grandchildren, Kassie and MaryBeth Moore and Kyle and Alexander Booker. Also remaining are a brother, John Booker of Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy O'dendhal of Centerreach, N.Y.; a niece and nephew; and many treasured friends in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7 at Voglers on Reynolda Road. The memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at Knollwood Baptist Church. YADKINVILLE -- Mrs. Jessie Ruth Brown Brannon, 79, passed away Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at her home. She was born Feb. 22, 1921, in Yadkin County to the late Otta Columbus and Mollie Mae Martin Brown. Mrs. Brannon was retired from the textile industry and was a member of Branon Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Davis Brannon, and two brothers, Dwayne Brown and Kenneth Brown. Surviving are her children, Larry Davis (Geraldine) Brannon of Hamptonville, Janet B. (Dr. Harold) Salmons of Yadkinville, and Cheryl B. (Worth) Cook of Lewisville; three grandchildren, Sandy Denise Johnson, Kenneth Justin Gordon and Laura Kathryn Brannon; two great-grandchildren, Kayla Johnson and Austin Johnson; two sisters, Madie B. Atkins and Carol B. (Bobby) Brown; and two sisters-in-law, Anne Brown and Ruby Brown. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Branon Friends Meeting by the Rev. JONESVILLE -- Louise Eldridge Bunton, 80, passed away early Tuesday morning at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born April 19, 1920, to Thurmond and Diana Eldridge. She retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co. with 46 years of service. She was a member of Arlington First Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Douglas Bunton of the home; two daughters, Nancy Zwack (Ray) of Winston-Salem and Caroline Hemric (Gilbert) of Hamptonville; five grandchildren, Jeff Thompson (Jill) of Jonesville, Lesia Lege (Jeffrey) and Angela Thompson of Charlotte, Van Hemric (Jennifer) and Amber Hemric of Hamptonville; six great-grandchildren, Chase, Olivia and Jacob Thompson, Ashton and Colton Hemric and Nicholas Lege; two brothers, Claude Eldridge of Elkin and Alvin Eldridge of North Wilkesboro; a sister, Beatrice Conrad of Lillington; and several nieces, nephews and many friends. CORONA, N.Y. -- Mr. Elijah James Davis, 83, of 1511 99th St. passed away Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000, at the Northshore Hospital, Forest Hills, Queens, N.Y. He was born Sept. 1, 1916, in Hampton, S.C. to the late Luke and Josephine Davis. He resided in Winston-Salem for more than 40 years where he was a taxi driver for Camel City Cab Co. He moved to New York in 1958 and was employed with the New York Transit Authority until his retirement in 1980. He was preceded in passing by a son, Richard Davis. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Davis of the home; three sons, Eddie Davis Sr. (Floydeen) of Philadelphia, Tommy R. Davis (Laverne) of Randlestown, Md., and Ronald Davis (Shirley) of San Diego; three daughters, Margaret Oliver of Clemmons, Marion Davis of Winston-Salem and Francesta Patterson of Charlotte; 34 grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a brother, John Davis (Lyzetta) of San Diego; a sister, Ruth Mebane of Bronx, N.Y.; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be noon Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Bishop Joseph Lowery officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. BELHAVEN -- Mr. Emory Jackson ''Jack'' Dennard Jr., 72, of 2395 W. Old Pamilco Beach Road died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept 7, 2000, at Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church , officiated by the Rev. Tony Warren. A graveside service will be held at noon Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at Forsyth Memorial Park (Northwest corner) in Winston-Salem , officiated by the Rev. Jack Borders. Mr. Dennard was born in Covington, Ga. , April 25, 1928, the son of the late Emory Jackon Dennard Sr. and the late Layona Anderson Dennard. He was a graduate of Lanier High School and the Georgia Institute of Technology and served in the U.S. Army Air Force in Turkey. On Sept. 16, 1950, he married the former Georgia Ann Stokes , who preceded him in death in 1990. Mr. Dennard began working for Western Electric in Winston-Salem as an electrical engineer before joining John Kiger in 1955 to form a partnership which has evolved into Carolina Medical Electronics Inc. located in King. He was chief executive officer and chairman of the board until his retirement in 1987. Mr. Dennard's company was very prominent worldwide in the early days of cardiovascular and peripheral vascular instrumentation. In 1973, he was among a group of delegates, including Gov. Jim Holshauser and former Gov. Bob Scott to the Soviet Union to help establish import/export practices, and served for five terms on the North Carolina Export Council. He was an active member and deacon of College Park Baptist Church from 1954 to 1970 and First Baptist Church of King from 1970 to 1992. He was a current member and deacon of Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church. In 1992, he married the former Kay Strickland, who survives him and moved to Belhaven. Mr. Dennard was also preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Dennard Thompson in 1994. Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons, Emory J. Dennard III and his wife, Dale, of Winston-Salem, David G. Dennard of California, Thomas S. Dennard and his wife, Mary Jo, of Charlotte and Kenneth S. Dennard and his wife, Nadine, of Houston; two stepsons, H. Walton Finch of Greensboro and David M. Finch of Burlington; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Paul Funeral Home in Belhaven and Friday at the First Baptist Church of King immediately following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Jack's name to the Belhaven Missionary Baptist Church, 251 Edwards St., Belhaven, NC 27810 to continue the projects that he began. Brig. Lola Martin Hall, 89, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Oct. 7, 1910, in Sandy Ridge to Jacob and Ella Hall. Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by her husband, Brig. Dellie Frank Hall, in 1992. They served together as officers in the Salvation Army for 66 years, retiring in 1971 and moving to Winston-Salem. They served appointments in Jonesboro, Ark., Harlan, Ky., Johnson City and Knoxville, Tenn., Jackson, Miss., and Kinston and Durham. She was a former member of the Eastern Star and Business & Professional Woman's Club. She was a member of the local Salvation Army Corps and taught the Women's Bible Class for many years. Mrs. Hall is survived by a son, Joel Len Hall of Tampa, Fla.; three sisters, Ada Steele and Mary Lou McMillan of Martinsville, Va., and Frances Biggs of Sandy Ridge; three nieces, Linda McMillan, Brenda Kahle and Audrey Harrell; a nephew, Phillip McMillan; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Thelma Wilson; and two caring friends, David and Dot Rickard. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Louvie Martin, Jessie Francis, Laura McBrayer, Nealie Corns and Maggie Durham, and two brothers, Paul and Richard Martin. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7 at Parklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with Major Dan Proctor officiating. Family will receive friends following the service. STOKESDALE -- Mr. Virgil Benbow Ham Sr., 76, of 8862 Colgate Road died Tuesday morning, Sept. 5, 2000, at Wesley Long Community Hospital. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at Oak Level Baptist Church. Interment will be in Gideon Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. He was born March 15, 1924, in Forsyth County to the late Russell J. and Mary Fuller Ham. Survivors include his wife, Mary Sue Ham; three daughters, Brenda Hamm, Shelby Tucker and Wanda Watson; three sons, William ''Bill'' Ham, Virgil Ham Jr. and Robert ''Steve'' Ham; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and six stepgrandchildren. Mrs. Marilyn S. ''Lynne'' Harpe of Winston-Salem died Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000. She was born in Hudson County, New Jersey , July 27, 1925. After growing up in the New York City area and attending Columbia University, she moved to Winston-Salem in 1946, where she worked as a legal secretary for Womble, Carlyle, Sandridge and Rice until the 1960s. She began a political career in 1981 and represented the Southwest Ward on the Winston-Salem Board of Alderman until 1997. She also was a charter member of the Forsyth County Tourism Development Authority, where she served as chairwoman of the board from 1986 until resigning in July 2000. During her career, she also served on numerous local and statewide boards and agencies. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson C. Harpe; mother, Charlotte B. Lawson; father, Samuel Thomson and stepfather, James W. Lawson. Surviving are a son, William C. ''Bill'' Harpe, partner Sheila Loring and Star, the world's finest basset hound of Durham; a brother, William ''Bill'' Thomson and wife Ruth of Lyndhurst, N.J.; a niece, Lenore Thomson Bentz and husband Tom of White Fish Bay, Wis.; and a nephew, Dennis Thomson and wife Debbie of Maywood, N.J. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel , with the Rev. Thomas Bentz officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. Burton Atlee Hedrick Sr., 82, of Duke Whittaker Road died Monday afternoon at his home after being in declining health. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Bear Creek Baptist Church , with the Rev. Cecil Wetherholt and the Rev. Lee Childress officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. They request memorials be considered for the American Lung Association, 112 Fayette St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service on Thursday. Mr. Hedrick was born in Wevaco, W.Va. Dec. 27, 1917, to the late Clennie B. and Tressie Mae Smith Hedrick and was retired from Gravely Tractor with 40 years of service. He was a member of Bear Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Hedrick enjoyed fishing, gardening, camping and doing small tractor repair. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertye Marie McDonald Hedrick in June of this year. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Griffith; a brother, James Hedrick; and three grandchildren. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Dorsey (Virginia Carol) Sampson, Mrs. Alton ''Pete'' (Loretta) Smith, Mrs. Stella Hedrick, Mrs. Connie (Richard) Hedrick all of Mocksville and Mrs. Bop (Brenda) Pauley of Winston-Salem; three sons, Burton A. Hedrick Jr. of Wilmington, Otis Hedrick and wife Linda and Larry Hedrick and wife Linda all of Mocksville; 21 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Charles Hedrick of Winston-Salem.
