SMITH
Lorraine Sink Smith, 74, of Shady Grove Church Rd., Winston-Salem, passed away Friday, September 17, 1999 at the home of her daughter, Bonnie Loflin, in Midway. A 2:00 p.m. funeral service will be held Sunday, September 19 at Canaan United Methodist Church, where she was a member. The Rev. Wade Childers will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Smith was born in High Point on December 7, 1924 to Andrew Devid and Lecta Mae Swaim Sink. She retired from Carolina Underwear, Inc. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robah Sheats Smith, Jr., in December 1998; two brothers, Grayson and Devoe Sink; and a sister, Blanche Hussey. Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie Loflin and her husband, Rod, and Barbara Boger and her husband, Gray, all of Midway; her grandchildren, Kevin Loflin and wife, Amy, of Wilson, Chad Loflin, and Kyle and Jill Boger, all of Midway; great grandchildren, Parker and Morgan Loflin, both of Wilson; and a sister, Catherine Peace of, Trinity. The family will receive friends at Mrs. Smith's home. WEAVIL
COLFAX -- Mr. Danny E. ''Nobbin'' Weavil, 47, of 103 South Bunker Hill Rd., died Friday, September 17, 1999 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. He was born in Forsyth County, the son of Deward and Lillie Ballard Weavil. He was a member of Colfax Baptist Church, the Roanoke Hunt Club in Halifax, the N.C. Wild Life Association, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. His mother and father preceded him in death. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, 3:00 p.m., September 12 at Colfax Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Monday, September 20 at Pierce Funeral Home in Kernersville. Surviving are his wife, Brenda Mikles Weavil, of the home; and one niece, Christy W. Bradshaw.
WHITE
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Dr. Arthur C. White, 74, of Indianapolis, Ind. 46260, a professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine, passed away Sept . 10, 1999 at his residence. The burial was in Williamsburg, Ky. Dr. White was born Aug . 1, 1925 to the late Herman Roy White and Ethel White. He had been professor of medicine at I.U. since 1967. He established the Infectious Disease Division at the school, and similar divisions at the University of Louisville and the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. White began his career as an assistant in medicine at Vanderbilt University in 1953. He then served as an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Louisville from 1959 to 1962. He was associate professor of medicine and director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Medical College of Georgia from 1963 to 1967. Dr. White was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and from 1959 to 1964, served as the John and Mary Markle Scholar in Academic Medicine. He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and received a medical doctorate from Harvard University in 1952. Dr. White was considered a world authority on staphylococcal infections. He wrote more than 170 articles or chapters on infectious disease. He is listed in the book The Best Doctors in the U.S. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, the Infectious Disease Society of America, and the American Clinical and Climatological Society. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthur C. White Lectureship in care of the I.U. Foundation. Survivors include his wife, Katherine ''Katie'' Pope White of the home; his daughter, Dr. Anne Litton White, who is a family practitioner and has a private practice in Winston-Salem; two sons, Dr. Arthur Clinton White, Jr. of Houston and H. Roy White II of New York ; a brother, H. R. White of Hollywood, Fla; and six grandchildren, two of Winston-Salem, Katherine Litton Davis, 15, a sophomore at Reynolds High School and John Benjamin Davis, 8, a third grader at Summit School. Leppert & Hensley Mortuary, Indianapolis, Ind. served the family.
BAILEY
Mrs. Kate Conrad Bailey, 88, widow of Taft J. Bailey, died Friday morning after a period of declining health. Mrs. Bailey was born in Winston-Salem on July 4, 1911 to the late Amos Oscoe Conrad and Minnie Brown Conrad. She was a longtime member of Olivet Moravian Church. Mrs. Bailey and her husband operated Bailey's Food Store and Kate's Kitchen Bakery in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Bailey also cared for children in her home. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989. Surviving are her daughters, Patsy Bailey Jent Calhoun and her husband, Ralph of Winston-Salem and Katherine Bailey Loafman and her husband, Jerry of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Lee Anne Jent Sykes and husband, Artie of Winston-Salem, Ellen Jent Carter and husband, Nick of Baltimore, Maryland, and Robert Taft Loafman and wife, Jamie of Lewisville; two great-grandsons, Clay and Ben Sykes of Winston-Salem. The funeral will be conducted by Rev. Doug Rights at Olivet Moravian Church, Sunday, September 19, 1999 at 4:00 p.m. Mrs. Bailey will lie-in-state from 3:30 p.m. until service time. The family will receive friends at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Rd. Chapel Saturday from 7:00-9:00 p.m.
BROWN
Mrs. Thelma Bates Brown, 73, of Winston-Salem, died Thursday, September 16, 1999 at her home. She was born August 3, 1926 in Forsyth County to Roy Henry and Lottie Everhart Bates. Mrs. Brown was a member of Woodland Baptist Church and was retired from Hanes Hosiery after 30 years of service. After retirement, she spent many years caring for children. Perhaps her greatest legacy will be the love she had to give to so many children. Thank you for all you gave of yourself. We will miss you, Mom. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Owens of Winston-Salem and Louise Bitancor of Jacksonville, Fla. Surviving are her husband, Delbert L. Brown of the home; a son, Stan Madison and wife, Shirry of Walnut Cove; two daughters, Tammy A. Byrd and husband, Bryan of Winston-Salem and Tabatha A. Darnell and husband, Duane of Jacksonville, Fla; six grandchildren, Brittany, Danielle, Kelsey, Jacob, Buck, and Angie; four great-grandchildren; four sisters, Margaret Wiles and Helen Minton both of Winston-Salem, Lucille McAllister of Summerville, S.C. and Myrtle Hilderbrand of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two brothers, Pete Bates and L.C. Bates both Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown with Rev. Zeno Groce officiating. CRISSMAN
BOONVILLE -- Mr. Burley Eugene Crissman, 82, of River Road, passed away Friday, September 17, 1999 at Willowbrook Health Care in Yadkinville. He was born April 4, 1917 in the Siloam Community of Surry County to the late Rufus Burley and Cora Bowman Crissman. Mr. Crissman was involved most of his life with the automobile business and in 1973 was elected top Cadillac Salesperson of North Carolina. He was retired from Patterson's Inc. of Mt. Airy, was a member of Boonville United Methodist Church, was an active member of the Chancel Choir, and was a member of the Sara Lou Brown Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Elkin Lodge #454 A.F. & A.M in Elkin, since November 16, 1948, where he received his 50 year pin on November 16, 1998. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, a member of the Oasis Temple of Charlotte, N.C. and a member of the Elkin-Jonesville Shrine Club. He also served on the Civil Air Patrol. Mr. Crissman was an avid golfer and he thoroughly loved the game. Surviving are his children, Judy Crissman (Dr. John) Kiser, Dawn Crissman (Tommy) Johnson, Daphne Crissman (Wayne) Trent, and Eugene Fleming (Audrey) Crissman; four sisters, Mrs. Freddie (Burke) Meadows of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Nannie (Roy) Casstevens, Mrs. Lois (Lowell) Todd, and Mrs. Betty (Robert) Shore all of Yadkinville; three brothers, Fonroe (Neva) Crissman of Lake Norman, Sam (Carol) Crissman of Belle Glade, Florida, and Finney (Bobbie) Crissman of East Bend; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a dear friend, Trudy Bryant. His funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday at Boonville United Methodist Church by Rev. Marion Swann and Rev. Dana Wooten. Burial will follow in the Boonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 North of Yadkinville. DUCKETT
Mrs. Lottie Wheeler Duckett, 82, of 1404 East 23rd Street, passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 1999, at her residence. She was a native of Darlington, South Carolina, born on June 6, 1 917, the daughter of the late George Washington Wheeler and Bertha Hill. She was a devoted member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church and was a retired homemaker. She is survived by her loving husband, Raymond Sanders Duckett of Winston-Salem; her step-mother, Mattie Wheeler of Winston-Salem; brothers-in-law, Herbert Duckett of Winston-Salem and Luther Duckett of Washington, D.C.; sisters-in-law, Louise Duckett and Clara Mae Duckett both of Winston-Salem and Nancy Suber, Helen Duckett, and Viola Simpson all of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one niece, Elaine Davis of Philadelphia, Pa.; a nephew, Bernard Wheeler of Philadelphia; three special friends, Doris Gray, Lottie Mae Willett, and Judy Walker all of Winston-Salem; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, September 18, 1999 at 2:30 p.m. from the Bethlehem Baptist Church with Reverend E.L. Clark, Sr. officiating. DWIGGINS
MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. Lester Franklin (Pete) Dwiggins, 70, of Garner Street, Mocksville, died Friday, September 17, 1999 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, unexpectedly. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Concord United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Phillip Park Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Eaton Funeral Home in Mocksville. Memorials may be considered for Concord United Methodist Church, 161 Cherry Hill Road, Mocksville, N.C. 27028 or to the American Diabetes Association, 1820 E. 7th Street, Charlotte, N.C. 28204. Mr. Dwiggins was born December 30, 1928 in Davie County, a son of the late Marshall and Belle Parks Dwiggins. He was the retired owner and operator of Dwiggins Metal Masters for forty-seven years. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served as a Sergeant in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church where he was a past chairman of the administrative board and building committees. Mr. Dwiggins also enjoyed restoring old autos and collected antique tools. He was educated in the Mocksville schools and was a member of the Mocksville Fire Department where he served for over thirty years and was chief for eight. He was a member of the Mocksville Lions club where he was a member for forty-one years and served as a president for two terms. He was a Past Zone chairman of District 31-D and was honored as a John Stickley Fellow in the Lions Club. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Spry Dwiggins to whom he was married forty-six years. Two daughters, Mrs. Marty (Cathy) Dyson and Mrs. Chris (Patty) Cave both of Mocksville; two sons, Mike (Cynthia) Dwiggins of Salisbury and David (Vickie) Dwiggins of Mocksville; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one step great-granddaughter; one sister, Betty Anderson of Mocksville; and two brothers, Everette Dwiggins of Mocksville and Bill Dwiggins of Asheboro.
HARTGROVE
KING -- Mrs. Kathleen Burke Hartgrove, 62, of Hartgrove Road, died Thursday, September 16, 1999. She was born October 13, 1936 in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England to Francis Burke and Kathleen Clifford Burke. In November of 1957, she came to the United States to marry Dennis Gray Hartgrove whom she met while he was serving in the United States Air Force in England. Surviving are her husband, Dennis Gray Hartgrove; three daughters, Kim Lorraine Hartgrove and Melinda Gale Hartgrove of Winston-Salem and Jeanine Hartgrove Ulsenheimer and husband, Tom of King; one granddaughter, Ashely Kathleen Ulsenheimer; one sister, Eileen Burke Bancroft and husband, Brian of Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, England; two brothers, John Clifford Burke and wife, Margaret of Ripley, Derbyshire, England and David Patrick Burke and wife, Joy of Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, England; and many special in-laws, nieces, and nephews. The family will receive friends at a memorial service at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, September 18, 1999 at the First Baptist Church in King. HINE
Grace Gentry Hine, died Friday, September 17, 1999 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther McKinley Hine. Mrs. Hine was born in Surry County on March 25, 1907 to the late Anderson H. and Electra Gray Gentry. Mrs. Hine was an active member of Friedland Moravian Church as long as health permitted. Mrs. Hine was also charter member of the Ou-to-Gro Garden Club. She was well known for her Moravian cookie baking, furnishing cookies at Old Salem for many years. She was preceded in death by her sister, Alma G. Sweatman and a brother, Wiley A. Gentry. Surviving are two daughters, Ann H. Snipes and husband, Bob of Winston-Salem and Jane H. Motsinger and husband, James of Castle Hayne, N.C.; grandsons, Bryan and Mark Snipes and Kent Motsinger; two granddaughters, Marianne Smith and Sara Barefoot; eleven great-grandchildren and two loyal caregivers, Ellen Graham and Wanda Minton. To her friends and family, she was truly an ''Amazing Grace''. The family will receive friends Saturday, September 18, 1999 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway.
