MASHBURN
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Services for Gladys Queen Mashburn, 84, of Wildwood Place, formerly of 417 Greengate Dr., will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in the main sanctuary with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Cancer Institute at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center or to First Baptist Church Building Fund. Visitation will be Friday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel. Mrs. Mashburn died Wednesday, September 15, 1999. Born in Morganton, North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Robert Patton and Annie Dale Queen. Her maternal grandparents, Asaph and Lettie Dale founded the First Baptist Church of Morganton. Mrs. Mashburn was a former member of Holmesburg Baptist Church, Philadelphia, where she faithfully served on committees, taught Sunday School, and was a circle leader and teacher. She was a former member of Knollwood Baptist Church, Winston-Salem. She was retired from Thalhimers, Inc., where she received the Distinguished Salesperson of the Year Award, Thruway Shopping Center, Winston-Salem. She was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church, Columbia, the Baraca Sunday School Class and the Oasis Club. Surviving are her brother, Ray J. Queen of Winston-Salem; sister, Eddis Q. VanHorn of Houston, Texas; son, Harry L. Mashburn of Columbia; daughters, Linda M. Griffin and Jane M. Royster of Columbia; nine grandchildren, Pat, Paul, and Lee Mashburn, Jeffrey and Laura Griffin, and Scott, Chris, Greg, and Elizabeth Royster; and great-grandsons, Neil, James Paul, and Cameron Mashburn all of Columbia. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, James L. Mashburn; and infant son, James L. Mashburn, Jr.; and a sister, Eloise Q. Collare.

MEED
ELKIN -- Mr. James W. Meed, 85, of 318 West Main Street, Elkin, died Tuesday, September 14, 1999 after an extended illness. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Sanford Giles. Burial will be in Crestwood Memorial Gardens. Mr. Meed was born in Parkersburg, W.Va., December 20, 1913 to Lewis and Mary Davis Meed. He served as Assistant Scout Leader in Boy Scouts and was an active supporter of Girl Scouting in Elkin for more than 20 years with his wife, Dottie. He was a member of the Elkin Fire Department from 1943-1973 and was an active member of First United Methodist Church. Mr. Meed was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy C. Meed in 1997. Surviving are three daughters, Mary I. Meed of the home, Ellen M. Brady of Huntsville, Ala., and Nila M. Corbell of Little Rock, Ark.; three grandchildren, William Scott Brady, Mark Darin Brady, and Jayme Blair Corbell; two sisters, Regina M. Burt of Winston-Salem and Helen M. Zearley of Carmel, Ind. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that any memorials be made to First United Methodist Church of Elkin or the charity of the donor's choice. The family will receive friends from 10:30-11:00 prior to the funeral service at Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin.

MONK
PFAFFTOWN -- Mr. Bruce H. Monk of 3311 Vienna-Dozier Road, died Wednesday, September 15, 1999 at his home. Mr. Monk was born on April 10, 1914 in Castlewood, Virginia to Carl and Kate Monk. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sarah Meada Monk of Pfafftown; one daughter, Bette (Don) McCroskey of Winston-Salem; one son, Ted (Melanie) Monk of Winston-Salem; one sister, Ethel (Roy) Patrick of Castleweek, Va.; six grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Monk taught welding during World War II and was employed by Twin City Welding in Bristol, Va. until his retirement. The family visitation will be at Castlewood Funeral Home in Castlewood, Va. on Saturday, September 18, 1999 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. with a memorial service immediately following at Temple Hill Cemetery, Castlewood, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Foundation Fighting Blindness, P.O. Box 17179, Baltimore, Md. 21297-0495.

RHOADES
NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mr. Robert Wade Rhoades, 58, of Bethany Ford Road, North Wilkesboro, died Wednesday, September 15, 1999 at his home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, 3:00 p.m. at Rock Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Linwood Campbell officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Rhoades was born April 9, 1941 in Wilkes County to Dewey and Mozelle Holloway Rhoades. Before retiring, Mr. Rhoades worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for 36 years. He is survived by two daughters, Gina Stoltz of Clemmons, N.C. and Darlene Utt of Malaysia; two sisters, Carolyn Shephard of Roaring River and Lynn Rhoades of Conover; three brothers, Raymond Rhoades, Roby Rhoades, and Doug Rhoades all on North Wilkesboro; and three grandchildren, Christian Stoltz of Clemmons, and Sunni Utt and Teddi Utt both of Malaysia. Mr. Rhoades was also survived by a close friend, Kaye West of Mocksville. The family will be at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Saturday from 7 until 9 p.m.

ROTHROCK
Samantha Marie Rothrock of Winston-Salem, was called home Tuesday, September 14, 1999 from Forsyth Medical Center after just a short time on earth. Surviving are her parents, Rock and Audrey of the home; four brothers, Ronnie, Jr. and Dustin Rothrock of the home, Daniel Rothrock of East Bend, and Devin Rothrock of Clemmons; paternal grandmother, Annie Covington of the home; and maternal grandmother, Mary Jane Triplett of Clemmons. A memorial service will be held Friday, September 17, 1999 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Mr. Bill Teague officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

SCOTT
Miss Eleanor J. Scott, 62, of 221 Picadilly Dr., expired Tuesday evening at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following a period of declining health. She was born January 31, 1937 in Pittsburgh, Pa. to Charles E. Scott and Hazel Gray Scott. Miss Scott was graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Nursing School with a B.S. in nursing. She became Director of Operating Rooms at the Ohio State University Hospital. She then came to N.C. Baptist Hospital as Director of Operating Rooms. Her last work was with Salem Family Practice from which she retired due to her health. She is survived by her brother, James W. Scott and his wife, Mary of Newark, Ohio; a nephew, Greg G. Scott of Wilmington; a niece, Misty Scott of Chicago, Ill.; and a very special friend and former colleague, Mary VanPoole of Salisbury. A memorial service celebrating Miss Scott's life will be held Saturday evening at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Rd. Chapel at 7:00. Visitation will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the American Diabetes Assoc., Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27157, or to the American Heart Assoc., 1386-A Westgate Center Dr., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103.

SHUMATE
Mrs. Dolores Langley Shumate, 56, of Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, September 15, 1999 at The University of North Carolina Medical Center. She was born August 22, 1943 in Randolph County to Russell and Dorothy Langley. She was preceded in death by one son, Raymond Shumate. Mrs. Shumate is survived by her husband, Raymond Bill Shumate of the home; nine children, Ricky Shumate and wife, Christy of Mocksville, Johnny Shumate and wife, Sue of Tobaccoville, William Shumate and wife, Amy, Chris Shumate and wife, Sonja, Jason Shumate and wife, Jamie, Ashley Waterloo and husband, Jay all of Winston-Salem, Robin Hall and husband, Scott of Walkertown, Teresa Weatherman of Walkertown, and Karen Scott and husband, Freddie of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Adelyn, Crystal, Brittany, Kayla, and Christopher; her mother, Dorothy Langley; one sister, Jean Collins; one brother, Bobby Lackey and wife, Betty; and one special aunt, Romona McAdden. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 18, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

SNOWBRICK
KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Donal Snowbrick, 69 of 445 Valleymeade Dr., Kernersville, passed away on September 11, 1999 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at the home, 445 Valleymeade Dr., Kernersville, N.C. on Saturday, September 18, 1999 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. A burial service will be held in Painesville, Ohio on September 25, 1999. Dottie, as she was known to family and friends, was born on December 25, 1929 in Carolina, W.Va. She was a retired Registered Nurse, a homemaker, and was of the Methodist faith. She is survived by her husband, Donal Snowbrick of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donal Snowbrick, Jr. and wife, Vickie, and Phillip Snowbrick and wife, Kathy; three grandchildren, Angel, Melissa, and Phillip, all residing in Painesville, Ohio; two sisters, Shirley Lovett and Nancy Pierce of Greensboro; two nephews, Paul Lovett and wife, Candace and their daughter, Lauren of Kernersville, and Keith Lovett of Winston-Salem; and one niece, Lisa Eller and husband, Christopher of Lynchburg, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cancer Research Foundation of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27157.

CAMPBELL
Mrs. Ann Eaton Campbell, age 67, of 3712 Whitfield Ct., passed away on Monday, September 13, 1999 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a short illness. She was born October 4, 1931 in Davie County in the Cedar Creek Community to Nora Foote Eaton and the late William H. Eaton. She was preceded in death by her husband Morgan Garfield Campbell; a brother, Thomas G. Eaton, and a sister Ethel E. West. Ann was a 1949 graduate of Davie County Training School and McLean Stenographic School. She retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System where she worked as a Teachers Assistant at Cash Elementary School. Mrs. Campbell was a life-long member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Choir and Missionary Circle of the Church. She leaves to cherish her loving memories: her mother, Mrs. Nora Foote Eaton of Meadow Brook Terrace, Advance, N.C.; two brothers, Henry (Bernice) of Albemarle, N.C., and Odell (Annette) of Mocksville, N.C.; four sisters, Willie Wiseman of Rahway, N.J., Bessie Eaton and Queen McKnight both of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Jean Eaton of Mocksville, N.C.; one aunt, Maggie Roseboro of Cool Springs, N.C.; three sisters-in-law, Geraldine Eaton and Rachel Campbell, both of Winston-Salem, and Magalene Holman of Philadelphia, Pa. A devoted niece, Dorothy (James) Rhynehardt of Columbus, Ohio, and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Among them two dear cousins, Lillie Scott and Millie West; her devoted childhood friend, Thelma Carpenter. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 18, 1999 at 2 p.m. from Cedar Creek Baptist Church, where Rev. Michael Linville will officiate and Eulogy will be given by H.W. Whiley. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family may be contacted and funeral cortege will assemble and leave from the home of a brother, Odell Eaton, Cedar Creek Rd., in Davie County. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem. Arrangements entrusted to and services will be conducted by Gilmore Funeral Directors.

COOK
Mrs. Agnes Gaye Hayes Cook, 81, of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday evening, September 14, 1999 at The Oaks at Forsyth. She was born March 24, 1918 in Wilkes County to Clossie and Addia Hayes. Mrs. Cook was a member of Hanes Baptist Church and had retired from A.T.&T. She was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Surviving are a daughter, Gaye Brewer of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, James B. Davis, Jr. and Holly Michelle Davis; a great-grandson, James B. Davis III; many nieces and nephews; and three special sisters-in-law. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel by Rev. Ron Groce. Entombment will follow. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service in the Mausoleum Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society, 1900 S. Hawthorne Rd., Forsyth Medical Park, Ste. 622, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103-3901. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving Mrs. Cook's family.
