Hicks, Violet White
ACCOKEEK, Md. - Leaving a life lived with perfect grace and a generous heart, Mrs. Violet White Hicks, 84, of Accokeek, the wife of Mr. Grady Thomas Hicks, formerly of Dobson, N.C., passed away Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, in Maryland surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Hicks was born Feb. 18, 1920, in Salem Fork to the late Abe and Stella Holyfield White and was a member of Christ Church of Accokeek. She graduated from the University of Maryland and was a retired executive assistant to a Nobel Prize-winning mathematician at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, D.C. A loving mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend, she leaves behind to cherish her memory two daughters and a son-in-law, Brenda and Alec Nesbitt of Larkspur, Colo., and Mary Hicks of Foscoe, N.C.; five grandchildren, Jasper Hicks Kaplan, Grady, Ben and Ian Nesbitt and Annie Nesbitt Lohri; and a great-grandchild. She is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Joanne and Eric Schlaginhaufen of Greensboro, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Herman and Jenny White of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a large and loving extended family. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hicks was preceded in death by seven brothers, three as infants and Jasper, James, Bryan and Gray White; and a sister, Cecile White Howard. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Salem Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Roland Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. Her body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials made to the Salem Fork Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
Hill, Louella Tuttle
WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Louella Tuttle Hill, 90, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Walnut Cove Healthcare Center. She was born in Stokes County to William and Hattie Lou Heath Tuttle. She was a member of Isom Baptist Church and a homemaker. Granny Hill was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Hill Sr.; her daughter, Peggy Hatcher; her son, Michael Lee Hill; and her great-granddaughter, Victoria Slate. Surviving are eight children, Delwood Hill of Walnut Cove, Leon (Josephine) Hill of Pine Hall, John H. (Becky) Hill Jr. and Doris (Rayvon) Lawson of King, Malinda Lou (Garland) Wright, James G (Ann) Hill and Rebecca "Becky" Hill, all of Walnut Cove and Mary (Joe) Fulp of Danbury; 16 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chester Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in Palmyra United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 11, at the funeral home and other times at Granny Hill's home. Hines, Roy Lee "Sugar Lump"
Mr. Roy Lee Hines, "Sugar Lump, " 53, passed away Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at Hospice & Palliative CareCenter. He was born in Winston-Salem on May 5, 1951, to the late Roy Caldwell and Gwendolyn Faust. Roy served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a devoted construction worker. He always lent a helping hand to family, friends and neighbors. His name speaks for itself: R-respectful, L-loving and H-helpful. He will be missed. "Let go and let God." Roy is survived by two sons, Roy Lee Hines Jr. and Joseph Brockington. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Upper Room Church of God. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Family visitation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church. (Russell)
Huls, Elizabeth Day
Mrs. Elizabeth Day Huls, 89, died Sunday evening, Jan. 9, 2005, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Huls was born in Forsyth County on Aug. 15, 1915, daughter of Thomas F. and Rebert Tally Day. She graduated from Mineral Springs High School in 1933 and marriage Harvey S. Huls, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Huls worked at Hanes Hosiery and later at Duke Power Co. Following her retirement, she had lived in Hillsville, Va., and the Shoals Community before returning to Winston-Salem. She was a longtime member of Ogburn Memorial United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and was active in the United Methodist Women. Most recently she was a member of Oak Summit United Methodist Church and a member of the Club 66 Senior Citizens. Surviving are a sister and her husband, Juanita D. and Ralph Tomlinson; two brothers and their wives, T.F. and Coleen Day and Albert T. and Louella Day; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Forsyth Memorial park by the Rev. Jack Danley. Memorials may be made to Oak Summit United Methodist Church, 732 Oak Summit Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105. There will be no formal visitation. Family and friends may pay their respects this evening, Jan. 9, at Voglers Reynolda Road Chapel.

Kalin, Jean
Jean Kalin, 91, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, on her birthday at her home in Winston-Salem. She was from Detroit, Mich., but lived in various parts of the country. She was an avid traveler, was adventurous and lived a spirited life. She received distinguished achievement awards throughout her life for successful sales development and exceeding her goals. She was a loving mother who led by example by focusing on the successes of her daughter. She was a kind, loving spirit who will remain in the hearts of all who knew her. Surviving are her daughter, Diane Montei; two brothers, John Koback and wife Beverly and Frank Wheeler and wife Billie; and two sisters, Helen Zapotochny and Celia Lenart. Preceding her in death were her parents, Michael and Alexandra. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Jan. 11, in her home followed by a visitation for her family and friends. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family.

Linville, Benjamin Franklin "Frank"
YADKINVILLE - Mr. Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Linville, 69, of Yadkinville, a loving husband, father and grandfather, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at his home. Mr. Linville was born Oct. 2, 1935, in Yadkin County to James Ralph and Nannie Thompson Linville. He was retired from J.H. Craver Mfg. and was a member of Wyo Bible Methodist Church. Frank was a compassionate, loving person to everyone he met and was faithful to his church as long as his health permitted. Surviving are his wife, Doris Pauline McBride Linville of the home; a son, James Gray (Julia) Linville of Yadkinville; a daughter, Becky (Robert Sr.) Chapman of Yadkinville; two grandchildren, James Matthew Linville and Robert Franklin Chapman Jr.; and two brothers, Hugh William Linville and wife Ella Mae Ellis Linville and Glenn Ray Linville and wife Frankie Jester Linville. The Linville family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 11, at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Gentry Family Chapel in Yadkinville by the Rev. Billy Seats and David Stetter. Burial will follow in the Wyo Bible Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Gladys Fraylick Moore, 78, loving wife and mother, passed away Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Moore was born Jan. 10, 1926, in Davidson County to the late Edward and Bessie Long Fraylick. Mrs. Moore was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. A grandchild preceded her in death. Mrs. Moore is survived by her husband, Robert Moore, of the home; three daughters, Pam Goins and husband, Darrell, of Trinity, Martha Hill and husband, Doil, of Seagrove and Elizabeth Trivette and husband, Terry, of Harmony; a son, Bill Newman and wife, Renee, of Barbados; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 11, at Trinity United Methodist Church with Pastor Lee Strange officiating.
