RALEIGH - Richard Duke Pennell, 58, of 14012 Durant Road died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005. He was born in Forsyth County, son of the late Edith Sink Pennell and Floyd Paul Pennell. Mr. Pennell is survived by his brothers, Jerry Pennell and his wife, Bonnie, of Raleigh and Paul Pennell of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, in the Bright Funeral Home Chapel in Wake Forest with the Rev. Steve Mitchell officiating. The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions be made to the Deliverance Temple, 10121 Boyce Road, Creedmoore, NC 27522. Friends may visit with the family immediately following the service. Bright Funeral Home and Cremation Center is in charge of arrangements.

Robertson Jr., Arthur "Bubba"
Mr. Arthur "Bubba" Robertson Jr. was born Jan. 9, 1925, in Winnsboro, S.C., to the late Arthur Robertson Sr. and Lucy Hall Robertson. He departed this life Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was educated in the Fairfield County public schools in Winnsboro, S.C. At an early age, he joined Ebenezer AME Church. He served as a trustee. He was a great supporter until his death. In 1946 he moved to Winston-Salem and was employed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 36 years. He joined St. James AME Church, where he served as president of the usher board and as a member of the stewards board. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge 139 of Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Trezvance Robertson Jr. and Elisa. Arthur is survived by his wife of 44 years, Beulah Mae Blakeney Robertson; two sons, Nathaniel Robertson of Winnsboro, S.C., and Trezvance (Fern) Robertson of Charlotte; a daughter, Alice Mae Robertson (the Rev. James) Blakeney of Monroe; five grandchildren, James (Diana), Juana, NaMarrio, Kyle and Camille; two great-granddaughters, Leah and Lauren; a brother, Thomas C. (Marie) Robertson of Winston-Salem; six sisters, Beatrice Padgett of Winnsboro, S.C., Dorothy (Elijah) Martin of Jenkinsville, S.C., Hattie Brice of Blair, S.C., Ruth Bookert of Columbia, S.C., Fannie (Moses) Davis of Columbia, S.C., and Carrie Etta (Bishop Z.L.) Grady of Charleston, S.C.; special friends Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Jordan Sr.; and a host of relatives and friends. A homegoing service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph R. Samuels Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. Family visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. (Russell)
Smith, Abbie Carl
ARCHDALE - Mr. Abbie Carl Smith, 88, resident of 6125 Poole Road died at 10:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, in the Moses Cone Extended Care Facility. Mr. Smith was born Oct. 6, 1916, in Surry County, a son of John Anderson and Stacy Golden Smith. He had been a resident of Archdale most of his life and retired from Wagoner Woodcraft. Mr. Smith spent many years farming and was a member of the Glenola Baptist Church and Sunday school. He was marriage to Thelma Rodgers, who preceded him in death on Oct. 27, 1999. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Michael (Linda) Robertson of Reidsville; two sons, Carl M. Smith and wife Betty of Julian and Douglas R. Smith and wife Rhonda of High Point; a sister, Mrs. Eva Denny of Jamestown; a brother, Paul Smith and wife Madelyn of Westminister, Md.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Ruth Smith. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 11, at Glenola Baptist Church by the Rev. W. Douglas Davis. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will remain at Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. GREENSBORO - Mr. James "J.V." Vernon Smith, 67, formerly of Stokes County died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born Nov. 23, 1937, in Stokes County to the late Edgar and Carrie Booth Smith. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Donna S. Watts and husband Harold of Greensboro and Gina Hall and husband Roland of Vesta; son Wesley Smith of North, Va.; grandchildren Candace Watts, Cameron Watts, Chezley Watts, Chad Williams, Collin Williams and Zachary Smith; sisters and brother-in-law Peggy Cromer of Walnut Cove and Hilda Simpson and husband David of Oak Ridge; and brothers and sister-in-law Vance Smith and wife Ruth of Winston-Salem and Maxie Smith of Martinsville, Va. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a daughter, Melinda Smith; and two sisters, Pauline Collins and Nancy Hampton. A service to celebrate the life and freedom of Mr. Smith will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Howell-Nelson Funeral Chapel of Pilot Mountain, conducted by the Rev. Jennie Leake Hemrick. Brown, Mark Timothy
MOUNTAIN PARK - Mr. Mark Timothy Brown, 38, formerly of Rural Hall died unexpectedly Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at his home in the Mountain Park community of Surry County. He was born in Forsyth County on May 16, 1966, to Roy Lee and Penny Fulk Brown. Mark was a member of Beck's Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. He attended Woodland Christian School and graduated from North Forsyth High School. Mark was a self-employed carpenter. He is survived by his daughter, Ashley Brown and her mother, Brenda Brown of King; and his mother and father, Roy Lee and Penny Brown of Rural Hall. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Beck's Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. Karl Miller and Dr. Ray Hamilton officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, Oct. 26, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall and other times at the home of his parents on Omar Drive in Rural Hall.
