Butner, George Edward
EAST BEND - Mr. George Edward Butner, 88, of Hwy 67, East Bend passed away Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born on March 27, 1916, in Yadkin County to Edward C. and Ada Davis Butner. He was marriage to the former Cleo Long on Dec. 23, 1934. He spent all of his life in the East Bend area. During his lifetime he was involved in different types of businesses. He was the owner of the old Butner Mill. He was also the owner and manager of the service station near Butner Mill Road. For several years he was the owner of the East Bend Drive-In Theatre and Drag Race. He was also part-owner of the Drag Strip in Elk Creek, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Mattie Lou Davis; an infant daughter; and a niece, Pattie Jo Davis Prim. He is survived by his wife, Cleo Butner of the home; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Jesse Lee Taylor. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the Macedonia Church Cemetery with the Rev. Dwight Cartner officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, Oct. 26, at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. Huff Funeral Home is serving the Butner family.
Campbell, William O.
William O. Campbell, 84, of Winston-Salem died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004. He was born in Natchez, Miss., on Aug. 26, 1920, to Oscar Alexander and Mary Hawk Campbell. He grew up near Columbia, Tenn., and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He later earned a master's degree from Temple University. During World War II, he served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps and a meteorologist in the Philippines. Among his proudest career achievements were his engineering contributions to the Apollo 11 space mission. He then worked as a senior engineer at Western Electric in Winston-Salem, retiring in 1985. He developed a line of patented ski gloves, "Bill Campbell Outdoor Wear, " and was an avid skier. He was an elder and active member of Highland Presbyterian Church. He served as a docent at the Reynolda House Museum of American Art. He was marriage for 49 years to the late Beth Gill Campbell. He is survived by a son, William A. Campbell of Denver, Colo.; daughters Virginia "Ginny" B. Campbell of Winston-Salem and Mary Campbell Dickens of New York City; a brother, George E. Campbell of Knoxville, Tenn.; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Highland Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Highland Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden Fund.
Canter, Madge Christine Myers
NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Mrs. Madge Christine Myers Canter, widow of Claude A. Canter, died Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, at North Myrtle Beach. Mrs. Canter was born in Sharpsburg on Oct. 24, 1913, to the Rev. Charles H. Myers and Addie Martin Myers. Mrs. Canter was a graduate of Mooresville High School and Mars Hill Junior College. In 1934 she received her A.B. degree from UNC-Greensboro (Woman's College). Prior to her marriage she taught school in Rutherford, Brunswick, Anson and Wilkes counties. In 1947 she marriage Claude A. Canter in Wilkes County. During the 1960s and 1970s, she taught Spanish and English at East Wilkes High School. After the death of her husband, she moved to North Myrtle Beach in 1984. At age 87, she learned to use a computer and wrote and published a book, Saying It Write, which was a book of language for adults. Her favorite pastimes were corresponding with family and friends. She sent hundred of postcards with pictures of the beach to keep in touch. She enjoyed the many visits from friends and family and often enjoyed walking on the beach. Known for her sharp mind and wit, she was young in spirit and always learning new things. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Donald, Charles T. and John Myers. She is survived by a daughter, Claudia Marie Canter of North Myrtle Beach. She will be missed by her sisters-in-law and brother-in-law and her many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, who all meant so much to her. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel, with Dr. N. Nelson Granade Jr. and the Rev. Charles Myers officiating. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of North Wilkesboro, P.O. Box 458, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659 or to the charity of the donor's choice. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro will be in charge of arrangements.

HAMPTONVILLE - Infant Joseph Adian Crawford of Hamptonville died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Oct. 26, at New Hope Baptist Church.

DOBSON - Baby Brooklynn Isabella Grubbs died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004. She was born to Boyce and Stephony Colvard Grubbs. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery. Moody-Davis Funeral Home of Dobson is serving the family.
Hall, Katherine Thomas
Katherine Thomas Hall, lovingly known as "Polly, " died Monday morning, Oct. 25, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born Nov. 3, 1925, in Melbourne, Fla., a daughter of the late Alvin Thomas and the late Clara Ijames. She grew up in Winston-Salem, graduated from Hanes High School and marriage Ernest S. Hall Jr. in Charleston, S.C., in 1944. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in August. She worked for Sears, the Veteran's Administration and Duncan Music in Winston-Salem and for AT&T in Greensboro until she retired in 1988. Known for her artistic eye and precise stitching, she brought beauty into many lives. When she was able, she was an active member of Northwest Baptist Church. Polly is survived by her husband, Ernest S. Hall Jr. of Winston-Salem; her daughters, Daphne Hall of Athens, Ga., and Robin Crawford of Alexandra, Va.; her sisters and their husbands, Marian and Albert Arrington of Winston-Salem and Jane and Eston Betts of Durham; her brother and his wife, Alvin and Lena Thomas of Winston-Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with the Rev. Randy McKinney officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, Oct. 26, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the Northwest Baptist Church Building Fund.

Hutchens, Melvin H.
Mr. Melvin H. Hutchens of Woodcove Drive passed away Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 13, 1925, in Yadkin County to the late William "Beth" and Nellie S. Hutchens. Mr. Hutchens was retired from Sears Technical Department with 20 years of service and worked at Adams Lumber Co. for several years. He was a member of Forbush Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Jessie Hutchens, of the home; two sons, Odell (Patricia) Hutchens and Benny (Mitzi) Hutchens, all of East Bend; his grandson, Jody (Lisa) Hutchens; a great-grandson, Dylan Hutchens; two sisters, Hattie (George) Vestal and Ruby Hutchens, all of Yadkinville; three brothers, Billy G. (Geraldine) Hutchens of Yadkinville, the Rev. William (Annie) Hutchens of Lewisville and John Mose (Shelby) Hutchens of Yadkinville; his aunt, Isabelle Dinkins, of Winston-Salem; and Prissy the dog, his buddy. He was a good pop. His funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. William Hutchens. He will lie in state from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Forbush Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors by Yadkin VFW Post 10346. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Oct. 26, at Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Forsyth Regional Cancer Center in Winston-Salem. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Susan Hines and Dr. Patrick Healy for the care given to Mr. Hutchens.
