Elworth, Galina F.
Mrs. Galina F. Elworth, 82, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center following a brief illness. Galina was preceded in death by her husband, Edward L. Elworth, in 1988. Galina is survived by her three sons, Lawrence, Patrick and Michael; and grandchildren Jessica, Adrienne, Seth, Jacob and Sarah. A reception and memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, at New Philadelphia Moravian Church, 4440 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104. Donations to New Philadelphia Moravian Church are requested in lieu of flowers.
Gee, Felix Otis
LEXINGTON - Felix Otis Gee, 90, a longtime Lexington resident and civic leader, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at Fitzgerald Health Center, Arbor Acres in Winston-Salem. A native of Shelby, Felix was born Aug. 1, 1914, the son of Felix Otis and Weeta Presnell Gee. He graduated from Davidson College in 1935. After teaching at Lattimore High School in Cleveland County for two years, he came to Lexington and was an executive with Dacotah Cotton Mills, Inc., until his retirement in 1982. He was in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a lieutenant in the Pacific during World War II. As a member of First Presbyterian Church, he served as Sunday school teacher, deacon, church treasurer and elder. During this time he assisted in the organization of Meadowview Church, was elected moderator of Presbytery three times, was three times a commissioner to the General Assembly and was a trustee of Presbyterian Home in High Point and Lees McRae College in Banner Elk. He served as president of the Lexington Kiwanis Club, the YMCA, Lexington Memorial Hospital, the United Way and the Chamber of Commerce. He also served as a member of the Lexington School Board and director of Mid-State Tile Co. He was involved in the founding of Davidson County Community College and served as trustee for 18 years, 10 as chairman. In 2004, he served as the honorary chairman of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the founding of the college. In 1960 he was presented Lexington's Distinguished Citizen Award. Survivors include his wife, Mildred McKiney Gee, of Arbor Acres in Winston-Salem; two daughters, Mildred Gee Akers of Orange Park, Fla., and M. Elizabeth Gee of Winston-Salem; and two grandsons, Michael Gordon Akers of Jacksonville, Fla., and William Gee Akers of Orlando, Fla. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 4, at First Presbyterian Church in Lexington with the minister, Dr. Jim Wagner, conducting the service. Gudger, Lamar
ASHEVILLE - Lamar Gudger, a former U.S. Congressman, Superior Court judge, solicitor, and state senator, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, in his home in Asheville at the age of 85. Lamar Gudger was born April 30, 1919, to Vonno Lamar Gudger and Elizabeth Wilson Gudger. Mr. Gudger received his A.B. degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1940, and then went on to obtain his law degree from UNC Chapel Hill Law School in 1942. He then joined the U.S. Army Air Corps at the age of 22. Among other assignments, he studied navigation at Monroe Air Force Base, underwent primary flight training at Lafayette Air Force Base and even studied gunnery at Tyndale Field in the Florida panhandle. He served as a navigator and became captain in the Eighth Bomb Group, from 1942 to 1945 and earned the Flying Cross, Air Medal, ETO Campaign Ribbons and other decorations. After completing his tour of duty in Europe, he returned to Asheville. He became active in Democratic politics, was elected solicitor for Buncombe and Madison Counties in 1951 for a term of four years, served as the State Party secretary from 1960 to 1964, served in the N.C. House of Representatives for two years and served as a state senator for three terms. He was elected in 1976 to the U.S. House of Representatives as congressman for the 11th District and served there for two terms. Thereafter, in 1984, he was appointed Special Superior Court Judge for the State of North Carolina and in 1987 was named outstanding trial judge of the year by the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers. In December of 1988, Mr. Gudger left the bench to start a new law firm with his son, Butch. Mr. Gudger is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eugenia Reid Gudger; sons V. Lamar "Butch" Gudger III and his wife, Sally Tickle Gudger of Asheville, and Eugene Reid "Skip" Gudger and his wife, Carol Eastman Gudger of Sarasota, Fla.; daughters Carol G. Hardman and her husband, Bill Hardman of Atlanta, Ga., and M.E. "Betsy" Gudger of Asheville; a sister, Elizabeth G. Williamson of Asheville; and seven grandchildren, Christopher Gudger Hardman, Dorothy Eugenia Hardman, Bryan Thompson Hardman, Morgan Elizabeth Gudger, Christie Brooke Gudger, Reid Wilson Gudger and Sarah Elizabeth Gudger. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Robert M. Blackburn Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall. Burial will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. Maggie F. Jackson, 70, of 2814 N. Claremont St. went to be with the Lord Saturday, July 31, 2004. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today, Aug. 4, at Rising Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Martin, Erin Hope
STATESVILLE - Erin Hope Martin, 11, of 174 Fifth Creek Road died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Erin was born Feb. 4, 1993, in Iredell County and was the daughter of Jeffrey Ward and Crystal Galliher Martin, who survive. She attended Cool Spring Elementary School, where she was a rising sixth-grader and was a member of South River Baptist Church. She enjoyed drawing, music, school, dolphins and karate and was a cheerleader. In addition to her parents, Jeff and Crystal, she is survived by a sister, Hannah Martin; a brother, Andrew Martin, both of the home; maternal grandparents Robert and Margaret Galliher of Statesville; paternal grandparents Allen and Pat Martin Jr. of Mocksville; aunts and uncles Alan Martin III and his wife, Thea, Celeste Lyon and her husband, John, Jerry Galliher, Allen Holton and Rhonda Hastings; several cousins; and family pets Razz and Callie. A service to celebrate Erin's life will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, at South River Baptist Church with the Rev. Hampton Drum officiating. The body will lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. MOCKSVILLE - Brandon Lee Miller, 17, of Salmons Road died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at his residence. He was a fireman with the Sheffield-Calhain Fire Department and planned to attend Davie County High School this year. The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, at Fellowship Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Farmington Community Cemetery. Rishel, Maurice Henry
Mr. Maurice Henry Rishel, 85, passed away Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born July 14, 1919, in Manchester County, N.Y., to Norman Earl and Mabel Zumbrun Rishel. Mr. Rishel retired as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force and later retired from civil service as director of aircraft maintenance in Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. He was a member of Madison Avenue Church of the Brethren in York, Pa., and was a member of Enterprise Masonic Lodge 752. Surviving are his wife, Betty S. Rishel, of the home; two daughters, Marilyn Hartman and Bonnie Shultz, both of Wellsville, Pa.; three stepdaughters, Pamela Smith of Lexington, Rebecca Bean and husband, Darrell, of Winston-Salem and Tracy Cheek and husband, Tony, of Lexington; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward E. Rishel Sr. and wife, Dorothy, of York, Pa.; and three sisters, Ruth Gleim and husband, Elmer, Charlotte Charles and husband, Robert, all of York, Pa., and Marian Saylor and husband, Alvin, of Atlanta, Ga. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, at Parklawn Memorial Park with Mr. Bill Teague officiating. WESTFIELD - Mr. Jeffrey William Simmons, 51, of 1119 Brown Mountain Road, Westfield died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Dec. 14, 1952, in Forsyth County to Pattie Hart Simmons of Westfield and the late James Gary Simmons. Mr. Simmons was a member of Brown Mountain Baptist Church. He was a retired tobacco farmer and in recent years a self-employed business owner. Survivors include his wife, Sarah Smith Simmons, of the home; a daughter, Meghan Simmons, of the home; a son, Jesse Simmons, of the home; his mother, Pattie Hart Simmons, of Westfield; a sister and brother-in-law, Rebecca Simmons Taylor and husband, J.C., of Westfield; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Gary Joe Simmons and wife, Shellia, of Westfield and Chris Simmons and wife, Tammy, of Westfield; and nieces and nephews Shea and Bobby Smith, Sarah and Steven Moore, Shelley and Tony Phillips, Shannon and Chris Stanley, Chase Smith, Jonathan and Amanda Bryant and Ethan Simmons. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, at Howell Funeral Chapel of Pilot Mountain, conducted by Dr. Charles Howell.
