KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Mary Weaver Welborn, 80, of Kernersville died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at Britthaven of Kernersville. She was born Nov. 22, 1923, in Forsyth County to Violet Long Weaver and Henry C. Weaver. She was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul M. Welborn; and a grandson, Pete Welborn. Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Sawyer, of Emigsville, Pa.; two sons, the Rev. Tom Welborn and wife, Cheryl, of Chattanooga, Tenn., and David Welborn and wife, Karen, of Walkertown; two sisters, Dot DiFernando of Chesapeake, Va., and Ruth Rogers of Norfolk, Va.; a brother, Donald Weaver, of West Burlington, Iowa; her grandchildren, Bobby Sawyer and wife, Bobbie, of York, Pa., Tony Sawyer and wife, Missy, of York, Pa., James Sawyer and wife, Erin, of Dillsburg, Pa., Tammie Welborn of Rossville, Ga., Robby Welborn of Pensacola, Fla., Jimmy Welbron of Panama City Beach, Fla., Danny Welborn of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Ashley Hancock of Walkertown; and her great-grandchildren, Brittney Gravitt of Rossville, Ga., Brandon Welborn of Rossville, Ga., Dylan Welborn of Rossville, Ga., Jake Stone of Rossville, Ga., Danielle Sawyer of York, Pa., Brandon Sawyer of York, Pa., Hailey Rapoza of Rossville, Ga., and Juliana Bryan of Bratt, Fla. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 4, at Gospel Light Baptist Church by Dr. Bobby Roberson and the Rev. Tom Welborn. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

Anthony, Mallie Ashburn
HARMONY - Mrs. Mallie Ashburn Anthony, 84, of Harmony went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Anthony was born May 14, 1920, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Arthur and Nannie Ashburn. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. She was the first house parent of Emergency Child Care in Statesville. Mrs. Anthony was preceded in death by three infants; a son, Michael Anthony; a brother, Melvin Ashburn; and a sister, Edith Davis, both of Raeford. Surviving are her husband, Hurley J. Anthony of the home; two sons, Donald Anthony and wife, Martha of Hamptonville and J.T. Anthony and wife, Judy of Harmony; a daughter, Georgia Wike and husband, Felix of Harmony; a daughter-in-law, Lynne Anthony of Harmony; an adopted daughter, Gail Neal and husband, Darren of Statesville; a brother, Randall Ashburn and wife, Loriece of Raeford; two sisters, Margie Mann of Lillington and Betty Upchurch and husband, Julian of Durham; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, July 26, at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, at Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. Vernon Ball, the Rev. John Whalen and the Rev. Anthony Wike officiating. Mrs. Anthony will lie in state from 2:30 to 3 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow in Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.

Austin, Opal Lee Parker
HARMONY - Mrs. Opal Lee Parker Austin, 83, of Harmony died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Genesis Elder Care in Mooresville. Mrs. Austin was born March 7, 1921, in Iredell County to Jessie Cicero and Ida Brewer Parker. Mrs. Austin spent her early life in Mount Airy. She lived in Winston-Salem after her marriage to Howard Marvin Austin, who preceded her in death in 1994. She spent the later years of her life in Harmony. Mrs. Austin was preceded in death by a son, Eugene Rodney Austin, in 2000. Surviving are three children, Shirley Ann Tuttle and husband, Ronald of Troutman, Peggy Furches of Little River, S.C., and Michael Howard Austin and wife, Judy of Tampa, Fla.; six grandchildren, James Furches and Howard Furches of Winston-Salem, Edward Tuttle of Charlotte, Michael Austin of Maryland, Ann Mathis of Cumming, Ga., and Dustin Austin of Statesville; five great-grandchildren, Madelyn Furches of Winston-Salem, Austyn Tuttle and Nathan Tuttle, both of Charlotte, and Taylor Mathis and Madeline Mathis of Cumming, Ga.; and a sister, Louise Venable of Winston-Salem. Mrs. Austin's life was centered around her home, her family and her farm. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum with Dr. Cecil R. Cave Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the mausoleum. Vogler & Sons Reynolda is serving the Austin family.

Baity, Frank Dean
STATE ROAD - Mr. Frank Dean Baity, 51, of Adams Ridge Road passed away Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Northern Surry Hospital. Mr. Baity was born Nov. 2, 1952, in Surry County. Frank was a member of East Elkin Baptist Church. He was a devoted husband and father and was loved and respected by everyone who knew him. Frank was a fixture of Southeastern Cars and Parts, where he was employed for many years. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Ohna Baity; and his grandfather, Charlie "Buck" Baity. Surviving are his wife, Susan Smith Baity; a son, Travis Baity; a daughter, Phyllis Baity, all of the home; his mother, Betty Cornatzer of Winston-Salem, a stepson, Ryan Lemons; a stepdaughter, Alisha Lemons, both of the home; a brother, Timmy Ladd and his wife, Lisa of Elkin; a sister, Pam Baity of Winston-Salem; a mother-in-law, Betty H. Smith of Ennice; an uncle, Charles Baity and his wife, Wanda of Elkin; three aunts, Peggy Luffman and her husband, David, Hilda Pardue and her husband, Clyde, all of Ronda, and Jennie King and her husband, Billy of Jonesville; a nephew, Preston Ladd; a niece, Stephanie Ladd; special friends and employers, Rudy Holbrook and Charlie Parsons; and many cousins and friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel in Elkin with the Rev. Jerry Childress and Brother David Luffman officiating. Irene Swaim Barringer, formerly of Sunnyside Drive, Concord, died Saturday, July 17, 2004. Mrs. Swaim was born in Winston-Salem, the daughter of the late Rufus H. Swaim and Husie Wagner Swaim. She was the wife of the late Harry A. Barringer, owner of Pearl Drug Store, and a retired elementary schoolteacher, having taught in Concord, Charlotte and Winston-Salem. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Concord. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, at Waughtown Cemetery in Winston-Salem with Dr. Todd Hobbie and the Rev. Ken Craig officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 789, Concord, NC 28026. Wilkinson Funeral Home of Concord is in charge of the arrangements.

Blalock, Grace Spach
Mrs. Grace Spach Blalock, 81, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born May 30, 1923, in Winston-Salem to Charles and Daisy Knight Spach. She was a lifelong member of First United Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by three sisters; three brothers; and two nieces. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Richard "Ric" H. Blalock of the home; two daughters, Susan B. Hicks of Mocksville and Jill B. (Rick) Clay of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Jeffrey (Bronwen) Martin, Michael (Lynette) Hicks and Marci (Kendall) Howard; three great-grandchildren, Rhiannon Martin, Kolby Hurt and Ashlyn Hicks; a brother, Wilburn (Wilma) Spach of Winston-Salem; and several nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law. A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, at First United Church of Christ with the Rev. Elizabeth Parker officiating. JACKSONVILLE - Douglas Carlton Calhoun, 80, died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern. Mr. Calhoun was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by a son, Carlton Monroe Calhoun. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn D. Calhoun; and two daughters, Carolyn Calhoun and Bobbie Calhoun, all of the home. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, at Jones Funeral Home in Jacksonville with the Rev. Joe W. Myers and the Rev. Charles Lindley officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Onslow Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Tuesday night, July 27, at the funeral home.

Ferguson, Gilbert L.
KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Gilbert L. Ferguson, 77, died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Ferguson was born in Anderson County, S.C., a son of the late Robert "Bert" and Celesti Ashley Ferguson. He was a retiree of the U.S. Postal Service, having served as postmaster for the Kernersville Post Office. Mr. Ferguson was a U.S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael D. Ferguson; and seven brothers and sisters. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Linville Ferguson of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Rene Ferguson of Kernersville; and a sister, Marcelle Orlando of Oak Ridge, Tenn. He was "Poppy" to his grandchildren, Tara Moore and her husband, Travis, Megan Greene, Caitlin Greene, Ryan Ferguson and Blake Ferguson, all of Kernersville, and Joshua Ferguson and Matthew Ferguson of Rural Hall. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. Memorials may be directed to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston Salem, NC 27103 or The Shepherd's Center of Kernersville, P.O. Box 2044, Kernersville, NC 27285. The family would like to express its thanks to the staff on the 9th floor West for the special care they gave Mr. Ferguson while a patient and a special thanks to Maria for the special warmth and care she gave; and to the staff of Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for all its kindness and concern.

Guill Jr., James David
James David Guill Jr. died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 24, 1931, in Blairs, Va., a son of James David Guill Sr. and Vivian Lee Hodnett Guill. In 1987 he retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., where he worked as a truck driver. He is survived by his beloved companion and caregiver of 29 years, Helen B. Strupe; and his best friend, "Buttons, " his dog. He was marriage to Mary E. Guill on Dec. 29, 1952. Other survivors include a son, Larry T. Guill and his wife Kathy of Blairs, Va.; a daughter, Susan Guill Jones of Ringgold, Va.; two brothers, Wiley Thomas Guill of Danville, Va., and Roy Glen Guill of Blairs, Va.; a sister, Venice Rochhi of Danville, Va.; two grandchildren, Jeremy Ray Jones of Ringgold, Va., and Amy Jones Nesselroade of Chesapeake, Va.; and two stepgrandchildren, Chris Myers and Clay Myers. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, at Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel in Danville, Va., with the Rev. Dan Kippley and the Rev. Jon Reed officiating. Interment will follow in the Guill Family Cemetery in Blairs. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Larry and Kathy Guill, 301 Railroad Lane, Blairs, Va. The family requests that memorials be directed to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston Salem, NC 27103.
