MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Woodrow Wilson Mills, 88, of Mount Airy, husband of Mrs. Marion Overcash Mills, passed away Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Mills was born in Union County on Oct. 15, 1915, to Patrick Henry and Jessie Jarmon Mills. He was owner/operator of Mills Supermarket, a Shriner, a member of First Baptist Church and an avid golfer at Mount Airy Country Club. Surviving are his loving wife, Marion Overcash Mills of the home; a daughter, Linda Hale of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Grace Mills of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Mills was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Abee and a brother, Howard Mills. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 25, at First Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Roger Gilbert. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Visitation will be held preceding the service from 1:30 to 2:30 Sunday afternoon at First Baptist Church. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 714 N. Parrish Sr., Charles "Ray"
Charles "Ray" Parrish Sr. of 247 Elm Drive died peacefully at home Thursday, July 22, 2004. He was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Bennettsville, S.C., to Julius Tillman Parrish and Mary Ann Elizabeth Pope Parrish. He served in the U.S. Navy with four years of active duty, serving on the submarines of the Atomic Biological and Chemical Warfare, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He was a passionate veteran and a loyal American. He was a charter member of the American Legion Post 0119 for 29 years. He was employed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and retired in 1984 after 38 years of dedicated service. Mr. Parrish was preceded in death by his first wife, Peggy Ann Longbottom Parrish. Surviving are his wife, Janis Thomas Parrish of the home; his children, Charles Parrish Jr. of King, Bonita Parrish of the home, Tammy (Walter) Johnson of Huntsville, Texas, Ronald (Beth) Parrish of Yadkinville, Deborah Marion of Pfafftown and Allison (Eric) Carlton of New London, N.C. He is also survived by a sister, Nellie Mae Saunders of Bennetsville, S.C.; a brother, William (Sylvia) Parrish of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Ray was an avid NASCAR fan since 1954, following the "Petty Generation." He took pride in his yard, gardening and "hot peppers." You should have tried his beef jerky. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Monday evening, July 26, at Voglers Reynolda Road Chapel. The service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, in the Vogler Chapel, conducted by Chaplain Fred Moretz. Burial with military honors by District 11 Honor Guard will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice & Palliative CareCenter and Forsyth Home Care. Ratledge, Agnes Malinda (Whitaker)
MOCKSVILLE - Agnes Malinda (Whitaker) Ratledge of Oak Tree Drive, Mocksville died Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Autumn Care of Mocksville. She was born Feb. 20, 1923, in Davie County to the late Lonnie and the late Edna (McClamrock) Whitaker. A member of the Zion Chapel United Methodist Church, she enjoyed cooking, gardening with flowers and spending time with her family. Survivors include a son, Kenneth Starr Ratledge Jr. and his wife, Etta of Winston-Salem; three daughters, Ann Barnes of Mocksville, Karen Deadmon and her husband, David of Mocksville and Sharon Denise Ratledge of Lynwood; two brothers, Lonnie Ray and C.L. Whitaker, both of Mocksville; a sister, Joyce Teague of Advance; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Kenneth Starr Ratledge Sr., on March 5, 1995. The funeral service will take place at 4 p.m. today, July 24, at the Oak Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Galen Hahn of the New Union United Methodist Church and the Rev. Billy Jarrett of the Flag Springs United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. today before the service at the church. PFAFFTOWN - Mrs. Claudia Bryant Skinner, 52, of Pfafftown died at her residence on Thursday, July 22, 2004. She was born Sept. 17, 1951, in Detroit, Mich., to Herschel Albert Bryant and Hilda Belle Butler Bryant. She was a member of the Appalachian Trail Council and the Sierra Club. Mrs. Skinner is survived by her husband, Frank Howard Skinner of the home; her mother, Hilda B. Bryant of Foley, Ala.; and two sisters, Vickie Kretschmann of Foley, Ala., and Sheila Hohne of Shelby, Mich. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 26, at Pine Rest Chapel in Foley, Ala. The Rev. T. Keith Talbert will conduct the service. Winters, Kevin Matthew
MOCKSVILLE - Kevin Matthew Winters, 19, of U.S. Hwy. 64 E., Mocksville, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Mr. Winters was born in Forsyth County on July 5, 1985. He was the son of Ricky and Debbie Halker Winters. He was a graduate of Davie County High School, class of 2004, and was employed at O'Reilly Auto Parts in Mocksville. He attended Victory Baptist Church and was active in the Youth for Christ. During his time at Davie High School he was a kicker/punter on the football squad. He also enjoyed the high jump and in 2003 was a regional finalist in track. He played soccer with the Rowan Rage and later was with the Winston-Salem Twins and was All-Conference Football in 2003. He was to enter Forsyth Technical Community College this fall to study human resources. Survivors in addition to his parents include a sister, Stephanie Nicole Winters of the home; two brothers, Kenneth Michael Johnson of Tampa, Fla., and Jason Allen (Laura) Winters of Advance; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Halker of New Port Richey, Fla.; his maternal grandmother, Juanita Halker of Advance; his paternal grandparents, Louis (Jean) Winters of Winston-Salem and Gray Stanley of High Point; two aunts, Cindy Flynt of Thomasville and Renee Maness of Greensboro; two great-aunts, Dina Scott of Winston-Salem and Gay Yarber of High Point; several cousins; and many many friends. The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 25, in Victory Baptist Church in Cooleemee with the Rev. Stan Riddle and the Rev. Shelby Harbour officiating. Wood, Charles William
MOORESVILLE - Charles William Wood, 80, of Agnew Road, Mooresville passed away Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville with his family by his side. Born Oct. 14, 1923, in Forsyth County, Mr. Wood was a son of the late Harvey Asbury Wood Sr. and Vera Cain Wood. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Harvey A. Wood Jr. and a sister, Vera Lou W. Hix. Mr. Wood grew up in Yadkin County and attended West Yadkin School. Following high school, he worked his way across the United States, working various jobs along the way. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1945 to 1947 as an aerial gunner. He was a foreman for Harrison-Wright Co., laying underground telephone cable along the East Coast. He retired after 35 years. He was an avid fisherman. Mr. Wood was a Mason for nearly 60 years and belonged to Adah Chapter 258 Order of the Eastern Star. On Oct. 14, 1949, he marriage Evelyn Cutshall, who survives. Also surviving are sons Charles Stephen Wood and wife Barbara of Mount Ulla and William Jeffrey Wood of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter Paula W. Thompson and husband Frankie of Mooresville; beloved grandchildren Charles Matthew Thompson, Curtis Franklin Thompson, Willliam Kyle Wood and Christina Michelle Wood; sisters Alice W. Van Hoy and husband Zeddie of Union Grove, Dot W. Wagoner and husband Howard of Hamptonville and June W. Blunk and husband Jack of Yadkinvillle; and special nieces Mary A. Wise of Candler and Lyndall W. Campbell of China Grove. He is also survived by many loving relatives. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 25, at the Cavin-Cook Funeral Home Chapel in Mooresville with the Rev. Bill Gerhardt and the Rev. Grady Barringer officiating. Yokeley, Paul Milton
KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Paul Milton Yokeley, 97, of High Point Road, Kernersville was received into the arms of his heavenly father on Thursday, July 22, 2004. Mr. Yokeley was born in Davidson County on Jan. 16, 1907, a son of William H. and Ora Stone Yokeley. He was a lifelong resident of High Point and a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church, where he was active for many years. He was owner and operator of Yokeley Furniture Co. until his retirement and later operated his own antique business. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was a devoted and loving father and was loved by all who had the privilege to know him. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Edna Lee Davis. He later marriage Virginia Perocheau in 1996, who died in September 2001. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Athel, Winfred and the Rev. Herman Yokeley; and a sister, Virgie Marsh. Surviving are his children, Judith Oranna Cook of High Point, Milton Davis Yokeley of High Point, Germaine Annette Yokeley of High Point and Paul Stephen Yokeley of Thomasville; three sisters, Lois Byerly and Gladys Bryant, both of High Point and Violet Beasley of Valparaiso, Fla.; five grandchildren, Billy Armentrout, Pamela Cook, Amber Odell, Richard Yokeley and Crystal Yokeley; four great-grandchildren, Corey Odell, Jacob Yokeley, Garrett Yokeley and William Armentrout; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 26, at Lebanon United Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. Laura Hubbard and Chaplain Fred Moretz of Hospice and Palliative CareCenter. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Arnold, Vallie M.
Mrs. Vallie M. Arnold, 92, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons. She was born June 14, 1912, in Yadkin County to Samuel Houston and Carrie Woods Mason. Mrs. Arnold was a charter member of Pleasant View Baptist, where she taught Sunday school for a number of years, the latest being the Loyal Workers Women's Class and was a member of the church choir. She was a homemaker and seamstress. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Glenn Arnold in 1983. Survivors include two sons, Harold R. Arnold and wife Wanda of Winston-Salem, and Reuben D. Arnold and wife Barbara of Lewisville; three grandchildren, Larry Arnold of Winston-Salem, Kandi Hauser and husband Steve of Mooresville, and Sabrienna Edwards and husband Steve of Roaring Gap; and four great-grandchildren, Elise, Maghan, Gregory and Ashley. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Pleasant View Baptist Church by the Rev. Denny St. Clair. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. EAST BEND - Mrs. Delphia Patterson Boaz of East Bend passed away Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center after a continuing battle with cancer. She was born in Ionia County, Lake Odessa, Mich., to William V. "Bud" and Emma Reid Patterson. They preceded her in death. She was retired from First Virginia Bank of Arlington in Virginia. She moved with her husband, Russell, to East Bend, where she enjoyed living the country life, planting her vegetables, herbs and flowers. She was an avid Washington Redskins fan. Survivors include her husband, Russell Boaz, of the home; her son, David Boaz and wife, Tamra, of Chantilly, Va.; her grandchildren, Amy and Aaron Boaz of Virginia and Josh, Gavin and Travis Tannehill; her great-grandchildren, Carlee, Haley, Chloe and Johnny; and a sister, Betty P. Brannock, of Galax, Va. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, at Huff Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Elisha Robertson officiating.
