Fischer, Rebekah Randolph
Rebekah Randolph Fischer of Winston-Salem, 49, lost a courageous battle with an insidious cancer on Monday, July 19, 2004. She was surrounded in her final days by family, friends and the dedicated and compassionate professionals of the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Rebekah died as she lived, with an uncommon grace that was an inspiration to all who knew her. She stoically endured totally undeserved pain and suffering and kept her sense of humor until the end. All who loved her share a profound sense of relief that Rebekah is now on a higher plane free of the troubles and distress of this mortal coil. Rebekah graduated from North Forsyth High School and received a bachelor's of fine arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. A 1984 graduate of Campbell Law School, she followed in the footsteps of her parents, Doris and Clyde Randolph, also local attorneys, who preceded her in death. Rebekah was a tireless advocate for her many clients and she aggressively fought for them in court. However, her courtroom advocacy was always conducted with consummate professionalism and she treated even the most dogged and irritating opponents with courtesy and respect. Rebekah concentrated her practice in the areas of family law and criminal defense and is survived by her husband and law partner, J. Clark Fischer, with whom she tried several capital cases. Rebekah's legal skills and unflagging determination were instrumental in allowing her clients in those cases to avoid the death penalty and thus, in a very real sense, she saved two lives. Rebekah was a rarity in that she was able to combine talent at law with talent in the arts. She was extremely active in the local arts community and served on the board of Piedmont Craftsmen. Besides creating beautiful custom jewelry, Rebekah was a regular contributor to the Birdfest auction of Habitat for Humanity, where she received awards of distinction every year. Her birdhouses were characterized by a combination of style and whimsy that brought a smile to all who viewed them. One of Rebekah's greatest joys was attending classes at the Penland School of Crafts, where she honed her artistic skills and escaped for a time from the cynicism and frantic pace that often accompanies the practice of law. Rebekah is also survived by her stepchildren, David Dillon Clark Fischer and Amanda Grace Lazacs; her brother, James Randolph; her stepmother, Jane Johnson; her stepbrothers, Kevin Keyes, Karl Keyes and Kraig Keyes; her aunts, Ann Woodruff and Francis Randolph Gross; and cousins B. Hugh Woodruff, J. Ferrell Greene, Anne Gross Gavin, John Philip Gross, Richard Thomas Gross and Steven Randolph Gross. Rebekah will be fondly remembered by friends far too numerous to name, but which include special friends Lisa Menefee, Deborah Wishon, Lisa Costner, Robin Stinson, Victoria Roemer and Gail Curtis, as well as her legal assistant, Alice Rich, who was as much daughter as employee. Rebekah had a great love of animals and was the leader of the pack at home, leaving behind four dogs, Tam, Pepper, Chaser and Martin, as well as a cat, Captain M. Rebekah and her family were greatly appreciative of the medical care she received, and would like to express particular thanks for the professionalism and empathy provided by Dr. William "Romy" Fisher, his assistant Lynn Lack, Dr. Dawn Moose and Dr. Eugene Paschold. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is handling all arrangements. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at the Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The service will be performed at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 22, by the Rev. Howard Backus at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home or St. Timothy's.
