Marcus, LeVance
Mr. LeVance Marcus, "Pigeon, " 80, of 421 Mount Vernon Ave. departed this life Thursday, July 15, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Lamar, S.C., on Sept. 15, 1923, to Henry and Lettie Marcus. He was a retiree of the Export Leaf Tobacco Co. and served in World War II with an honorable discharge. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Lettie Marcus, and was the husband of the late Beatrice McNeely Marcus. He is survived by two brothers, Harold (Shirley) Marcus and Denby (Carolyn) Marcus, both of Winston-Salem; five nieces and five nephews; two great-nephews; and four great-nieces. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. (Russell)
McRae, Dossie W. "Dot"
KERNERSVILLE - Dossie "Dot" W. McRae of Kernersville, 93, died at home on Sunday, July 18, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Blaine "Mac" McRae. Dossie was a lifelong member of Pisgah United Methodist Church in Kernersville. She was a volunteer at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where she received many awards in recognition of her devoted time. Mrs. McRae was also a member of the auxiliary fire department of Tallys Crossing. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed dearly by the Wendy's breakfast group. She is survived by four daughters, Ruth Huff, Bette Williams, Berenice Scott and Linda Przybylowicz; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Doyle Williams of Asheboro. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, with a service immediately following at Pierce Chapel in Kernersville. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to Pisgah United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 2165 Pisgah Church Road, Kernersville, NC 27284.

CLAUDVILLE - Mrs. Virginia "Jenny" Frances Jessup Nunn, 78, died Sunday, July 18, 2004. The funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Moody Funeral Home Chapel.
Pettyjohn, Rachel L.
Mrs. Rachel L. Pettyjohn, 87, of Oakdale Heights on Polo Road, Winston-Salem, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Dec. 9, 1916, in Statesville to James P. and Lillie Bell Taylor Harbin. Mrs. Pettyjohn retired from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in the records department and was an elder at Pine Chapel Moravian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Johnson Pettyjohn; a stepson, J.V. Pettyjohn; a grandson, Kirk Lewis; two brothers, Bill and J.P. Harbin; and a sister, Blanche Vail. Surviving are three sons, Wayne Lewis and wife Mary Nell of Winston-Salem, Wallace Lewis and wife Sara of Edgewater, Md., and Scott Lewis and wife Patti of Winston-Salem; two stepsons, Glenn Pettyjohn and Fred Pettyjohn; a stepdaughter, Marie Fesperman; five grandchildren, Keith, Kendall, Kent and Blaire Lewis and Lisa Sinclair; three great- grandchildren; and a sister, Hazel Watts of Oakdale Heights. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, July 20, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Tim Sapp officiating. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pine Chapel Moravian Church. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Oakdale Heights for their dedication and care.
Phelps, Otis Clayton
CLEMMONS - Mr. Otis Clayton Phelps, 78, of Clemmons died Monday, July 19, 2004, at his home. He was born March 25, 1926, in Forsyth County to the late William McKinley and Ruth Daniels Phelps. Mr. Phelps was retired from Sara Lee Hosiery and was a member of the First Christian Church of Clemmons. He played as a musician at seven different nursing homes a month as long as his health permitted. He also played with several different music groups. Surviving are his wife, Lucy Fearrington of the home; a daughter, Linda Meadows and husband William of Advance; a son, Billy Phelps of Woodlawn, Va.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at the First Christian Church of Clemmons by Pastor Bob Martin. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, July 20, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Rossman, Elizabeth Wood
GREENSBORO - Mrs. Elizabeth Wood Rossman, 89, died Friday, July 16, 2004, at Brighton Gardens. She was born Aug. 14, 1914, in New York City, the daughter of the late Howland and Elizabeth Marvin Wood. Mrs. Rossman was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Rossman. Surviving are daughters Joan Decker of Greensboro and Peggy McCan and husband Robert of Alexandria, Va.; grandchildren Kenneth Keels and wife Nancy, Penelope Gift and husband Jeff, John Fleming and wife Robin, Julia Long and husband Jerry, Michael Fleming, and Jason Fleming and wife Sarah; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sylvia Wood Buck. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. today, July 20, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. Virginia Herring officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Roe Library at the church. Memorials may be made to the Music Program, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 607 N. Satterfield, Nannie Virginia Morris
WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Nannie Virginia Morris Satterfield of 1407 N.C. Hwy. 65 E. was called home by God on Friday, July 16, 2004. She attended public school in Stokes County and was a retired employee of Burlington Industries Plant No. 8 in Madison. Mrs. Satterfield was preceded in death by her parents, Percy Sr. and Maggie Hairston Morris; her husband, Isaac Satterfield; a son, Maurice Satterfield; a brother, Percy Morris Jr.; and her sisters, Nellie Christian and Lucille Mitchell. She is survived by a devoted daughter, Linda S. (James) Farrow; her guardian, Fred D. Covington; a granddaughter, Maurika L. Penn; a great-grandson, Timothy Andrew Moyer Jr.; a brother, George Morris; a sister, Annie Kate Watkins; her aunts, Annie Kate Matthews, Elnora Hairston and Lenora Hairston; and a host of nephews, nieces, family members and friends. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at St. Mary's United Methodist Church in Walnut Cove, where she was a member, with the Rev. Purvis Morris officiating. Interment will be in the Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will visit with friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Simmons, Lucy Rogers
KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Lucy Rogers Simmons, 76, of Hopkins Road, Kernersville died Saturday, July 17, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Dec. 7, 1927, in Knoxville, Tenn., a daughter of the late John Willoughby and Eliza Cummings Rogers. Mrs. Simmons was a member of Goodwill Baptist Church in Belews Creek, a member of the order of the Eastern Star Chapter in Kernersville and a wonderful mother, mother-in-law and friend. She was retired from Gilbarco of Greensboro and had been active with her countless friends who provided support, time and care throughout her battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by a son, "Wally" Walter E. Simmons Jr. Surviving are four daughters, Vicky Simmons Dollarhite and husband E. Gary Dollarhite of Manquin, Va., Myra Simmons Cowan and husband Charles Cowan of Little River, S.C., Sherry E. Simmons of Greensboro and Jill Simmons McAbee and husband Phillip of Charlotte; a daughter-in-law, Dee McNamara Simmons of Kernersville; four grandchildren, Gary D. Dollarhite and wife Joan of Montclair, Va., Karen Dollarhite of Florence, S.C., Brandy Ashley McAbee of Charlotte and John Paul Simmons of Kernersville; two sisters, Kathleen Deford of Knoxville, Tenn., and June McGaffee of Louisville, Ky.; and two brothers, John Rogers Jr. and Gatha V. Rogers, both of Knoxville, Tenn. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, at Goodwill Baptist Church by the Rev. Mervin Garrison. Elizabeth Harrell Sohmer, 78, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax, Va. She was born on Dec. 9, 1925, in Emporia, Va., to Lyman Christian and Martha Jones Land Harrell. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Martha Vaughan Blakeney and Mahmoud A. Abu-Ruman of Charlotte; a son and daughter-in-law, Taylor Christian and Celia Neff Vaughan of Galax, Va.; her grandchildren, Emily Marquerite Vaughan, Rebecca Elizabeth Vaughan, Carolyn Taylor Vaughan, Kathryn Elizabeth Blakeney, Jack Cole Blakeney III and Taylor George Vaughan Blakeney; a great-grandson, Jonathan Thomas Mills Blakeney; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lucille and Stuart G. Keedwell of Emporia, Va., and Nancy and Joseph E. Butler of Winchester, Va.; a sister-in-law, Duane Harrell of Emporia, Va.; a brother-in-law, Louis Hutchison of Upper Marlboro, Md.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
