Matthews, Jackie Gray
PFAFFTOWN - Mr. Jackie Gray Matthews, 73, of Montford Road, Pfafftown passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Winston-Salem on Feb. 15, 1931, to Goldie and Lee Matthews of Winston-Salem. He was an active member of Elm Grove United Methodist Church in Pfafftown. Mr. Matthews retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in 1986 after 35 years of devoted service. He enjoyed volunteering for SALT for the Forsyth County Courts through the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bobby Lee Matthews. Surviving are his loving wife of 53 years, Johnnie Petree Matthews; two daughters, Gina (David) Byerly of Pfafftown and Tanya (James) Hendrix of Advance; five grandchildren, Bryan (Artemis) Byerly of Fayetteville, Megan Hendrix, Stacy Hendrix and Shelby Hendrix of Advance; a brother, Connie (Judy) Matthews, of Tobaccoville; a sister-in-law, Peggy Matthews, of Pfafftown; several loving nieces and nephews; and a host of family members and friends. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 16, at Forsyth Memorial Park by the Rev. Dwight Cartner and the Rev. Dick Patzfahl. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, July 15, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Funeral Home. Mayberry Jr., B.J. "Jay"
B.J. "Jay" Mayberry Jr., 75, of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, July 11, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Mayberry is survived by a sister, Ms. Lillie Bell Canada, of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Mr. Marvin Mayberry, of Asheboro. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 18, in the Sun Room at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Memorials may be made to Hospice or Alcoholics Anonymous of Winston-Salem. Thanks to Hospice for the loving care given to Mr. Mayberry. Arrangements are in the care of the National Cremation Society and Vogler Clemmons Chapel.
Patterson, Erie
Mrs. Erie Patterson was born in Gaffney, S.C., to Lee and Ophelia Gooden on Jan. 10, 1912. Mrs. Patterson passed on Monday, July 12, 2004, at the Lutheran Home after a period of illness. She was a faithful member of Carver Road Church of Christ. Her husband, Alan Patterson; her sisters, Agnes Hardy and Lillian Gooden; and her brothers, Jesse and Willie Gooden, preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter and only child, Magdalene Fleming, of Winston-Salem. Other survivors include five grandchildren, John A. Robinson, Willie J. Robinson, Bobby J. Robinson, Benjamin Robinson and Mary Hargraves; 12 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two special Christian daughters, Veronica C. Black and Mary C. Williams; two devoted friends, Sister Minnie Pauline Wilson and Sister Maggie Sheppard; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Patterson, "Gramps, " retired as a presser with a local cleaner. She was outgoing and feisty all of her life and led a life filled with energy. Mrs. Patterson was blessed to be loved and known by five generations of grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 16, at Carver Road Church of Christ, with Brother Cloys Cecil officiating. The family will visit with friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. (Clark S. Brown & Sons)
Sherrill, Charles Murray
MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Charles Murray Sherrill, 84, of 165 Virginia St., Mount Airy died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born April 13, 1920, in Catawba County to Glenn and Willie Sherrill. Mr. Sherrill was a longtime resident of Winston-Salem and a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church. He spent 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, serving our country during World War II and the Korean War. He was employed as a field representative for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft from 1965 to 1985, servicing various airlines throughout the world, including Piedmont Airlines. Throughout the military and private sector, Mr. Sherrill dedicated his life to aviation. He was a member of Forsyth Masonic Lodge 707 and was honored on Dec. 9, 2003, for his 50 years as a member. He was also an active Shriner. He is survived by his wife, Betty "Bett" Gill Sherrill of the home; two stepdaughters, Debra Parris and husband Mark of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Laura Stern of Dallas, Texas; and seven stepgrandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 16, at Ardmore United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, conducted by the Rev. Frank Grice. Inurnment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., at a later date. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family is being served by Howell Funeral Service of Mount Airy.
Williams Jr., Thurman L. "Butch"
Mr. Thurman L. "Butch" Williams Jr. of Winston-Salem passed away early Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Williams was born Jan. 1, 1931, in Forsyth County to Thurman L. Williams Sr. and Viola Walls Williams. He graduated from Hanes High School and UNC Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and Marine Corps Reserves, coached Northwest Little League Baseball, and for more than 30 years was a dedicated member of the Mount Tabor and Vienna Volunteer Fire Departments, where he served in numerous positions. He was a charter member of Peace Haven Baptist Church and a present member of Northwest Baptist Church. Mr. Williams is survived by his loving wife, Betty F. "Betsy" Williams, of the home; a daughter, Cathy S. Pickett, and husband, the Rev. Jim Pickett, of Rich Creek, Va.; his son, Steven Williams, and wife, Janet, of Lewisville; three grandchildren, Bobby Pickett and fiancee, Beth Brantley, of Virginia Beach, Va., Thomas Williams of Lewisville and Stephanie Williams and fiance, Kyle Richardson, of Lewisville; a sister, Carol Tilden, of Wilmington; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at Northwest Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the service. Woods, Judy Ann
ARARAT - Mrs. Judy Ann Woods, 49, of Ararat passed away on Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born March 30, 1955, in Forsyth County. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Brad Kenney; and a grandson, Brandon Kenney. A celebration of life in memory of Mrs. Woods will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at Stanford United Methodist Church in Siloam. Anderson, Nancy Elizabeth
MOCKSVILLE - Miss Nancy Elizabeth Anderson, 52, of US Hwy 601 S. died Monday, July 12, 2004, at Davie County Hospital. She was born Jan. 15, 1952, in Rowan County to Mary Daniel Anderson of Mocksville and the late Roy Lester Anderson. She was retired from Jim Malton Accounting with 30 years of service. She was a graduate of Davie County High School, class of 1970, and Rowan Technical College, with an associate's degree in business and computer science. She was attending High Point University, pursuing a bachelor of arts degree in accounting. She was a member of the National Association of Accountants. Miss Anderson was a very active and lifelong member of Liberty United Methodist Church. Her favorite pastime was reading. Survivors in addition to her mother include a sister, Joyce (Michael) Whitaker; a niece, Erin Whitaker; a nephew, Jeremy (Jill Seamon) Whitaker, all of Mocksville; and several loving aunts, uncles and cousins. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, at Liberty United Methodist Church with Dr. John Andrews officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, July 13, at Eaton Funeral Home. Andrews, Adelaide Haney
Mrs. Adelaide Haney Andrews, 94, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Raleigh, passed away Sunday, July 11, 2004. She was born Oct. 28, 1909, in Rock Hill, S.C., to the late Thomas Franklin and Vallie May Brown Haney. Mrs. Andrews was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church in Raleigh. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Robert Andrews; a sister, Martha Haney; and three brothers, Frank, James and Robert Haney. She is survived by two stepdaughters, Sandra Everton and husband, Mallory, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Linda McManus and husband, Reid, also of Virginia Beach, Va.; six grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a niece, Kay H. Vance and husband, Coy, of Lewisville. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, at Oakwood Cemetery in Concord by the Rev. Polly Applefield. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today, July 13, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

Bowles, Marguerite Sapp
Mrs. Marguerite Sapp Bowles, 87, of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, July 11, 2004, at The Oaks at Forsyth. Mrs. Bowles was born Feb. 23, 1917, to Arthur Taylor and Minnie Reich Sapp in Forsyth County. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl Lee Bowles; and a sister, Thelma "Tee" Sugg. Mrs. Bowles grew up in and was very active in every aspect of her church, Wachovia Arbor Moravian Church, until it burned down. After that, she was a faithful member of Ardmore Moravian Church until her death. She retired from Ideal Dry Goods, Inc. and cared lovingly for her mother and grandson. Marguerite loved her family, friends and church greatly. She is survived by a son, Stephen L. Bowles of Florida; a daughter-in-law, Carol Ann Bowles of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Bradley S. Bowles of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel by the Rev. Keven Frack and the Rt. Rev. Lane Sapp. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard.
