DANBURY - Mrs. Brona Ann Hall Bennett, 69, of 1255 Andrew Bennett Road, Danbury died Saturday, July 10, 2004. She was born May 29, 1935, in Stokes County, the daughter of the late Roy and Matha Mabe Hall. She was a homemaker and co-owner of Bennett's Feeder Pig Farm. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister-in-law, Joann Hall; and a brother-in-law, Elmer Lawson. Surviving are her husband, Edsel Bennett of the home; two sons, Teddy Dean Bennett and Henry Eddie (Amy) Bennett; two grandsons, Matthew Bennett and Andrew Bennett and friend, Jessica Moore, all of Danbury; four sisters, Mary H. Lawson of Danbury, Margaret (Charles) Sands of Rural Hall, Lois (Roger) Wret of Raleigh and Hazel (Kelly) Shelton of King; and three brothers, Claybon (Margaret) Hall of Winston-Salem, Clinton (Ethel) Hall of China Grove and Steve (Linda) Hall of Greensboro. A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Milfred Hudson and Elder Weldon Joyce officiating. Burial will be in Snow Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, July 12, at the funeral home and other times at the home.
Bowen, James Robert
KERNERSVILLE - James Robert Bowen of Kernersville went to be with the Lord Sunday, July 11, 2004. Mr. Bowen was born Dec. 21, 1951, in Nashville, Tenn., to the late Thomas J. Bowen and Pandora Harrell Dryden. He went to work at an early age at Frank's IGA in Murfreesboro, Tenn. He became a butcher and cut meat for many people in Murfreesboro and Smyrna, Tenn. His skill as a butcher enabled him to cut meat for such notables as former mayors Sam and Knox Ridley. He left the Murfreesboro area when Winn-Dixie closed in Smyrna in 1987. His family moved to North Carolina, and he butchered for Lowes Food in Kernersville until he became ill in 2004. He was preceded in death by his father; his grandparents, Tommy Bowen and Oman and Lucille Harrell of Bell Buckle, Tenn; and a very loving grandmother, Eura Mae "Mamas" Beasley. He was marriage April 6, 1973, to Annette Turner Bowen who survives of the home. Also surviving is their only child, Jaime Bowen Craven; a cherished son-in-law, Robert Craven of Kernersville, his mother, Pandora Harrell Dryden of Shelbyville, Tenn.; two brothers, Bill Bowen and his wife, Cindy of Hanover, Pa., and Walter Bowen and his wife Martha of LaVergne, Tenn.; five nieces; three nephews; five cousins; and two aunts. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, at First Christian Church, with the Rev. Pete Kunkle officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, July 12, at the church. The family welcomes flowers. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 4A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27405, for the research of pancreatic cancer. Hayworth Miller Cain is assisting the Bowen family.
Brumbaugh, Joyce Lippert
Mrs. Joyce Lippert Brumbaugh, 84, of Winston-Salem passed away peacefully Saturday, July 10, 2004, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Joyce was born Feb. 5, 1920, in Baltimore, Md. Joyce grew up in Woodlawn, Md., and lived with her husband, Edward, in Catonsville, Md., for most of her marriage life until they retired and moved to North Carolina to be with their family. She was a caring and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her beautiful smile, spunky spirit and selfless love for family and friends will always be remembered. She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Edward W. Brumbaugh; her three children, Joy Baldwin and husband, Woody of Durham, Wayne Brumbaugh and wife, Jane of Huntersville and Gayle Ford and husband, Mike of Winston-Salem; and her brother, Richard E. Lippert and wife, Susan of Bel Air, Md. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Amy Baldwin White and husband, John, Kate Baldwin Hoyle and husband, Wilson, Sarah Ford Goodfellow and husband, Blake, Bekah Ford and fiance, Clay Cooke, Hannah Ford, Beth Brumbaugh and Matt Brumbaugh; and six great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, at Epworth United Methodist Church in Durham. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:45 a.m. in the Church Fellowship Hall prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or the Durham County Public Library. Capital Funeral Home in Raleigh is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Catherine Hartman Crater, born May 16, 1916, died Friday, July 9, 2004, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home; however, her real journey has just begun. Catherine was a lifelong member of Friedberg Moravian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Coston Crater Sr.; a sister, Etta Grace (Brownie) Smith; two brothers, Edgar and Ray Hartman; a daughter-in-law, Sue Price Crater; and a stepgreat-grand baby. She is survived by a son, Sam C. Crater Jr. and wife, Sherrill; a daughter, Patty C. Brittain and husband, Tom, of Lexington; five grandchildren, Karen (Dale) Harrell, Kevin (Dede) Crater of Kernersville, Kathy (Donald) Shaw of King, Daniel (Sabrina) Brittain of Knoxville, Tenn., and Charlie (Johanna) Brittain of Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany; 10 great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren, Patrick (Amanda) Clark of Statesville, Melissa (Mark) Vanderburg of Colfax and John Clark of Lexington; two stepgreat-grandchildren; six sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law; along with numerous friends and loved ones. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, July 12, at Friedberg Moravian Church with the Rev. G. Thomas Shelton officiating. Memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Our dear Mother was called home today. God decided she need no longer stay. She fought a brave fight but her work here was done. She left this life in peace with victory won. Her love for our Lord she would always express. She gave all that she had and would never give less. Gently, but firmly, for our Lord she would stand. Whatever the work would be placed in His hand. She thought in all deeds we should glorify God. Strong was her trust down the paths she trod. Her message to all was do what God says do, and not be steadfast in just what pleases you. She had a true concern for all she would meet, if they were in her church or out on the street. In life she was always trustworthy and kind. She will be greatly missed by those left behind. Though great is the grief and sorrow we share, it should bring to mind what our God had to bear. The Son that He had to watch die on a tree, in his presence our Mother will ever be.
Crater, Ruth Smitherman
YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Ruth Smitherman Crater, 85, of Yadkinville passed away Saturday, July 10, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Crater was born Dec. 28, 1918, to the late Luther Lee and Anna Reece Smitherman. Ruth was well known in Yadkinville. She was retired from James Williams Printing Co. and had worked many years at Heffner's Land of Food. She was a member of Maplewood Baptist Church and a volunteer for Yadkin Christian Ministries. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Alfred Crater; two sisters; and three brothers. Surviving are two children, Judy (David) Myers of Yadkinville and John Lee (Nancy Denton) Crater of Alabaster, Ala.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, at Gentry Family Chapel in Yadkinville, with the Rev. Richard Eskew officiating. Burial will follow in Harmony Grove Friends Cemetery. Freeland, Charles "Lynn"
YADKINVILLE - Mr. Charles "Lynn" Freeland, 34, of Yadkinville, a loving husband and son, died Saturday, July 10, 2004. Mr. Freeland was born Oct. 28, 1969, in Lebanon, Tenn. Mr. Freeland was a 1988 graduate of Forbush High School and attended Surry Community College. Mr. Freeland was employed by Eveready Concrete Co. as a truck driver. He was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church and Trinity Christian Center. He was preceded in death by his father, Bryant Freeland, in 1998. Surviving are his beloved wife and best friend, Penelope Proffit Freeland of the home; his mother, Shirley Freeland of Yadkinville; a brother, Ramey (Marna) Freeland of Boonville and their son, Garrett Freeland; a sister, Rena (Eric) Adams of Yadkinville and their daughter, Destinee Adams; his father and mother-in-law, James and Sandra Proffit of Yadkinville; two brothers-in-law, Jamie Proffit of Yadkinville and John (Kristi) Proffit of Thurmond; and their children, Tanner and Ashten Proffit of Thurmond. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, at Union Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kenny Gooden, the Rev. John Cox and the Rev. Allen Mullins officiating.
