Clifton, Roger Monroe
MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Roger Monroe Clifton, 70, of 133 Shallowbrook Trail, Mount Airy, the husband of Juanita Leonard Clifton, passed away Friday, July 9, 2004, at his home. Mr. Clifton was born June 12, 1934, in Surry County to the late Thomas Monroe and Rosa Effie Marion Clifton. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during the Korean conflict. He was retired from Wall Lumber Co. and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Juanita Leonard Clifton of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Eric Clifton and Naomi Nierenberg of Albuquer-que, N.M.; two stepdaughters and spouses, Kimberley and Greg Cheek of Mount Airy and Lisa and Greg Jackson of Fayetteville; four stepgrandchil-dren and a spouse, Ashley Mears, Christopher Jackson, Sarah Jackson, and Joey and Heather Cheek; and four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Roy Clifton of Asheboro, Robert and Marlene Clifton of King, and Ralph and Linda Clifton and Ray and Phyllis Clifton, all of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Clifton was preceded in death by a sister, Rachel Clifton; two brothers, Reid Clifton and Bruce Clifton; and a sister-in-law, Jackie Clifton. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at Skyline Memory Gardens. The service will be conducted by Dr. Wayne Hager, and full military rites will be conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends at Calvary Baptist Church from 1 p.m. Sunday until the time to depart for the graveside service. Ferguson, William Howard
Mr. William Howard Ferguson, 74, of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, July 8, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born April 9, 1930, in Forsyth County to Roger G. and Nannie Rutledge Ferguson. Mr. Ferguson was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Tobaccoville and was retired from Mineral Springs Fire Department with 40 years of service, in which he served on the board of directors. He also retired from R.J. Reynolda Tobacco Co. with over 30 years of service. He was preceded in death by his brother, Worth Ferguson. Surviving are his wife, Delores "Dee" Ferguson of the home; a daughter, Patty Turner and husband Ritchie of Winston-Salem; a son, Mike Ferguson of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Jennifer Davenport and husband Ryan of Graham and Tiffany Turner of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Garland Ferguson of Germanton. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall, with the Rev. Evelyn Lemons officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, July 10, at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel. Gladwell, Janet McClung
ROCKY MOUNT - Janet McClung Gladwell, 85, died Thursday, July 8, 2004. She was born in Renick, W.Va., on Aug. 28, 1918, daughter of the late Emery and Anna Smith McClung. She was the beloved wife of the late W.F. "Monk" Gladwell for 56 years. Surviving are sons David M. (Penny) Gladwell of Annapolis, Md., Donal W. (Marsha) Gladwell of Rocky Mount, Jeffrey G. (Judy) Gladwell of Charleston, S.C., and B. Jay (Chur'e) Gladwell of Miami, Fla.; nine grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; 13 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; brothers Joseph B. McClung of Huntington, W.Va., and James H. McClung of Elkview, W.Va.; and sisters Helen B. Kvitky of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Polly A. Murdoch of Tangent, Ore. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 12, at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home in Rocky Mount with the Rev. Bill Grisham officiating. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Parklawn Memorial Park in Winston-Salem. Hudspeth, Bertha White
CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Bertha White Hudspeth, 100, formerly of Elkin, passed away Thursday, July 8, 2004, in Charlotte, where she had resided since 1999. She was born Aug. 19, 1903, in Surry County, the daughter of William Santford and Manie Guyer White. Mrs. Hudspeth retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co. in 1959 and later worked for the Reeves Theater until 1980. Mrs. Hudspeth was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Cleveland Hudspeth, in 1976. Surviving are three daughters, Joan Olsen Pinnix of Elkin, Helen Hudspeth McGroarty of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Evelyn Hudspeth McLeod of Charlotte; and three stepdaughters, Maude Donovan of Arlington, Va., Emma Boyles of Pilot Mountain and Mary Lee Micheleski of Winston-Salem. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 10, in the Hollywood Cemetery in Elkin, conducted by Dr. Bill Johnson, pastor of First Baptist Church in Elkin, where Mrs. Hudspeth was a member, and by the Rev. Cathy George from Matthews Presbyterian Church in Matthews. Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin is serving the family. Hutchens Jr., Rufus Weldon
EAST BEND - Mr. Rufus Weldon Hutchens Jr., 73, of 3449 Forbush Road died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Yadkin County on June 1, 1931, to Rufus Weldon and Elsie Douglas Hutchens. Mr. Hutchens was a member of Mount Carmel Friends Meeting. He was a retired farmer and construction worker. Mr. Hutchens was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Shirley Hutchens; and a brother, Bill Hutchens. Surviving are his wife, Frankie Crissman Hutchens of the home; his children, Rick (Lynn) Hutchens of Elkin, Sandra (Mark) Todd of Yadkinville and Gary Hutchens and Terri (Robert) Faircloth, both of East Bend; two sisters, Dorothy Jean Hutchens of East Bend and Peggy Hamm of Winston-Salem; a brother, Mack Hutchens of Raleigh; seven grandchildren, Christopher Hutchens, Ryan Hutchens, Amanda Todd, Nicholas Todd, Whitley Todd, Emily Faircloth and Chad Faircloth; and a great-grandchild, Alexis Hutchens. The funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at Mount Carmel Friends Meeting by the Rev. Reece Wall. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday to lie in state. Lutz, Hazel Dale Anthony
CLEMMONS - Mrs. Hazel Dale Anthony Lutz, 92, of Clemmons died Thursday, July 8, 2004, after a long illness. Hazel was born in Lincoln County to Cephus Paul and Rosa Ramseur Anthony on March 26, 1912. In 1933, Hazel graduated from Lenior-Rhyne College in Hickory. She taught third grade at Blackburn Elementary School from 1933 to 1935. After marrying Carl Washington Lutz in 1935, they made their home in Clemmons. Hazel was an active member of Clemmons Moravian Church, the Clemmons School PTA, the Girl Scouts and as a Meals on Wheels volunteer. She was preceded in death by her son, Anthony "Tony" Lutz and her husband, Carl Lutz. She is survived by three daughters, Arlene Baker and husband Calvin, Judy Carter and husband Ray and Lois Romahn and husband Scott; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Lutz Jackson; 10 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Florence Gallimore of Newton; and a dear friend, Earsley Fulton. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 11 at Clemmons Moravian Church by the Rev. Q. Ray Burke. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall at Clemmons Moravian Church. MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Lucy Priscilla Livengood Marshall, 90, of Mount Airy, widow of Mr. Leroy Marshall, passed away Friday, July 9, 2004, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Marshall was born in Surry County on Feb. 25, 1914, to Joseph William and Effie Mae Hutchens Livengood. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She was a member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, where she was active in WMU. Surviving are five daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara Scott of Mount Airy, Lucy and Paul Venable of Newport News, Va., Nancy Garner of Eden, Brenda and Jimmy Haynes of Mount Airy and Dianne Walker and fiance Larry Heath of Gibsonville; a son and two daughters-in-law, Ronald L. and Goldie Marshall of Leesburg, Fla., and Kay Marshall of Mount Airy; 19 grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 18 stepgreat-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; and six stepgreat-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Marshall was preceded in death by sons Bud Marshall, Robert "Bob" Marshall, Jerry Marshall and Jimmy Ray Marshall; an infant son; five sisters; and two brothers. Martin, Lottie Ethel Joyce
SANDY RIDGE - Lottie Ethel Joyce Martin, 92, of Amostown Road died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Stokes-Reynolds Memorial Hospital's Skilled Nursing Center. A lifelong resident of Stokes County, Mrs. Martin was born May 14, 1912, to Marvin and Mattie Amos Joyce. She was a housewife, homemaker and loving devoted mother who enjoyed quilting, growing flowers and collecting angels, thimbles and salt-and-pepper shakers. She will be remembered as a good neighbor and a gentle and kind lady. She was the oldest living member of Sandy Ridge Christian Church and the oldest member of Sandy Ridge Senior Citizens Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Martin; a son, Odell Martin; a daughter, Mozelle Amos; seven brothers, Clarence, Posie, Paul, Leonard, Jimmy, Caleb and Clyde Joyce; and a sister, Elva Tudor. Survivors include her sons, Russell (Ann) Martin of Madison and Harvey and Glenn Martin, both of Sandy Ridge; her daughters, Mattie Ruth (Alan) Neal of Stokesdale, Barbara (J.D.) Williams of Madison, Shelby (Daniel) Williams and Pat Carter, both of Sandy Ridge, Marie (Mike) Knight and Judy (Gary) Shelton, both of Stoneville, and Dot (Bobby) Carter of Riceboro, Ga.; her brothers, Bill (Irene) Joyce and Marion "Sambo" (Jeanette) Joyce, both of Ridgeway, Va.; a sister, Nolie Joyce of Madison; a son-in-law, Sam Amos of Sandy Ridge; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and special friends Ada Cregger, Dwight Prillaman and Shirley Clifton. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at Colonial Funeral Home, with the Rev. Roy Little and Minister James Rhodes officiating. Burial will follow in the Amos Cemetery.
