HILLSVILLE, Va. - Verna Davis Martin, 89, of Hillsville died Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Beverly Health Care of Blue Ridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Macie Adron Martin; three sons, Carlie Lee Martin, Darrell H. Martin and Glenn P. Martin; and a granddaughter, Christine Martin. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Scharlene and Elmer Stoneman of Mocksville, N.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Olen R. and Shirley Martin of Hillsville and Jesse L. and Brenda Martin of Hillsville; two daughters-in-law, Frances B. Vaught of Woodlawn and Glennice G. Martin of Christianburg; a sister and brother-in-law, Ethel and Foy Cruise of Hillsville; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 10, at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel in Hillsville, conducted by the Rev. Eugene Cassell. Burial will follow in Monta Vista Memory Gardens. The family will meet at 1561 Howlett St., Hillsville.

Tillotson, Clara Fry
Mrs. Clara Fry Tillotson, 87, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Meadowbrook Terrace of Davie. She was born March 13, 1917, in Forsyth County to James Ernest and Harriet Collins Fry. Mrs. Tillotson was an active member of Burkhead United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women's Circle. She was a graduate of Old Town High School and retired from P.H. Hanes Knitting Co. following 25 years of service. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Violet Warner, Evelyn Birdwell and Emily Tesh; and a brother, James Ernest Fry Jr. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Vernon D. Tillotson of the home; two daughters, Carolyn Tillitson of Winston-Salem and Rosalyn Tart and husband Keith F. of Clemmons; two grandsons, Brian Tart and wife Ellen of Chesapeake, Va., and Brent Tart of Clemmons; and several nieces and nephews of Winston-Salem. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, July 11, at Burkhead United Methodist Church by the Rev. Kathie Sherrill. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Burkhead United Methodist Church, 5250 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. The family would like to thank the staff of Meadowbrook Terrace of Davie, especially the 200 hall, for the love and care given to Clara during her stay there.
Waddell, William Randolph "Randy"
CLEMMONS - Mr. William Randolph "Randy" Waddell, 46, of Clemmons died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Duke University Medical Center. He was born July 30, 1957, in Pitt County to Hal Gordon Waddell Jr. and Billie Mizelle Waddell. Mr. Waddell was a member of Clemmons United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, of Greenville. He is survived by his wife, Robin White Waddell; a son, Riley and a daughter, Roxanne, both of the home; two brothers, Hal Gordon "Tripp" Waddell III and wife Barbara of Burlington and Michael Henning Waddell of Mason, Ohio; a sister, Anne Waddell McWalter and husband Wally of Hockessin, Del.; a stepsister, Alice Frances McDonald of Greenville; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at Clemmons United Methodist Church with the Rev. Phillip B. Cole and the Rev. Catherine Vlastakis officiating. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens in Morehead City. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, July 10, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. Whittington, Minister David Cecil
Minister David Cecil Whittington, 70, was born Dec. 17, 1933. He departed this life Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at his home after an extended period of illness. David was born to Martin and Lillie Rolling Whittington in Johnson City, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Whittington; two brothers, Mr. Parvin Whittington and Mr. Buford Whittington, both of Boone; and a grandchild, Sonya Michelle Lackey of Taylorsville. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Mrs. Naomi Hagler Whittington; two daughters, Angela D. Whittington of the home and Rita B. (Rodney) Barker of Hickory; two sons, Mr. David Lee (Veronica) Whittington of Newton and Mr. Dennis Whittington of the home; and four sisters, Ruth Greer and Estelle Wilson of Boone, Virginia Kate of Abbington, Va., and Minister Lillie Belle Rollings of Houston, Texas. He also leaves to cherish his memory six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nine sisters-in-law; 10 brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 11, in the chapel of Russell Funeral Home. Family visitation will be 1:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Russell Funeral Home of Winston-Salem is in charge of the arrangements.

Appelbe, Ronald Wright "Ron"
Mr. Ronald "Ron" Wright Appelbe, 72, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, July 1, 2004. He was born Oct. 3, 1931, in Timaru, New Zealand, the son of Leslie and Mary Elizabeth Appelbe. Ron was a two-time National Rifle Champion of New Zealand and later served in the Tank Corps of the New Zealand National Service. He went to Germany, where he studied engineering, majoring in photography at the University of Cologne. Ron later moved to London, England, working as a free-lance journalist. He worked for various American publications, including The New York Times, Life magazine and Business Week magazine. Ron came to the United States in 1965 to work for Business Week in New York. He moved to Winston-Salem in 1974 as head of the art/photography department for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Ron retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in 1993. He was also an avid gardener who grew beautiful roses and vegetables. Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Sandra Simmons Appelbe; a daughter, Nicola of St. Petersburg, Russia; two stepchildren, Darryl Posey of Kernersville and Christian (Derek) Boles of Asheville; his brother, Bruce (Trish) Appelbe of Timaru, New Zealand; two sisters-in-law, Linda Parker of Morrisville and Pat (Bob) Gibson of Lantana, Texas; and a brother-in-law, Jack (Leslie) Simmons of Kernersville. Other loved ones include many nieces, nephews and family friends. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. this evening, July 5, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to First Assembly of God and sent to 1146 Magnolia St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103, to support Ron's daughter, Nicola, in her mission work in St. Petersburg.
Jones, Steven Lanier
KING - Mr. Steven Lanier Jones, 39, died Saturday, July 3, 2004. He was born Oct. 7, 1964, in Newport News, Va. to Ruben Lanier and Judith Ann Queensen Jones. He was a musician and instrument repairman. Steven was a member of First Assembly Church of God in Winston-Salem, where he played oboe and saxophone in the church orchestra. He had also played with the Winston-Salem Symphony for over 20 years. He was a graduate of the N.C. School of the Arts, where he received his master's degree in oboe performance. He was an adjunct professor at Wake Forest University. Surviving are his wife, JoAnne Fennell Jones of the home; his mother, Judith Queensen Jones of Newport News; a sister, Jill Ann Jones of Greeneville, Tenn.; a brother, Daniel Scott (Heather) Jones of Lanexa, Va.; eight nephews; and two nieces. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 5, at First Assembly Church of God with Pastor Tim Loar and Pastor John Bost officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Royal Family Kids Camp Program, c/o First Assembly Church of God, 3730 University Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
