Marshall, Lee Jennings
KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Lee Jennings Marshall, 89, of 719 Carter St., passed away Saturday, July 3, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. Lee was born Oct. 11, 1914, in Carroll County, Va., to Frank and Nettie Allred Marshall. He is survived by a sister, Virginia Marshall Rapoza, of New Bedford, Mass.; a brother, Ralph, of Springfield, Va.; and a sister, Gray Marshall Mairella, of High Point. In his youth, Lee's family moved to High Point, where he was employed by Adams Millis Hosiery Mill. Later he was transferred to their Kernersville facility, where he met Nell Stafford, who became his bride Dec. 24, 1938. They made their home together in Kernersville for 65 years and proudly had two sons who survive, Michael Lee Marshall and wife, Chris, of Caret, Va., and Bruce Carleton Marshall and wife, Carolyn, of Kernersville. Four grandchildren, Bridgette Presson, Blair Cordoba, Maureen Samholt and Melanie Trainor have given Lee and Nell five great-grandchildren, Taylor and Carson Presson, Jessica Cordoba, Adian Marshall and Emma Samholt. Also surviving are special nieces, Sarah Jackson of Winston-Salem and Peggy Wilson of Colfax. Lee is affectionately remembered by many as Lonesome Lee the Clown from the early days of television, appearing from 1963 to 1977 as a member of the Old Rebel Show on WFMY-TV. He retired from Adams Millis after 43 years and had been a faithful Sunday School teacher for more than 70 years at the First Baptist Church in Kernersville, where he is a Deacon Emeritus. Lee was a member of the Masonic Lodge AF&AM of Kernersville for 60 years. On June 21, 1944, he was made Master Mason and was the oldest living Master, having served in that capacity in 1950. He was beloved by everyone and will be missed by all who knew him. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel by the Rev. Steve Martin. Burial will follow in Mount Gur Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, at the funeral home. Martin Jr., Gurnie Alexander "G.A."
Mr. Gurnie Alexander "G.A." Martin Jr., 79, died at his home in Winston-Salem on July 2, 2004. Mr. Martin was born in Forsyth County to the late Gurnie A. Sr. and Annie Ayers Martin. He was a World War II Marine Corps Veteran serving at Guadalcanal. Mr. Martin retired from Roadway as a truck driver and he attended Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. Survivors include his son, George Stephen Martin of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Aimee K. Martin of Charlotte and Allison C. Martin of Lewisville; a special friend, Alice McPeak of Pfafftown; a sister in-law, Mary Shouse of Linwood; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Rocky. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Dwight Cartner officiating. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park with military graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
McMillian, Gladys Miriam Hiatt
ARARAT, Va. - Mrs. Gladys Miriam Hiatt McMillian, 84, the wife of Harper Lee McMillian Sr., died July 4, 2004. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 6, at Fellowship Church. Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy is in charge of the arrangements.
Morton, Pauline Tuttle
SANDY RIDGE - Mrs. Pauline Tuttle Morton, 84, of 1724 Northview Church Road died Saturday, July 3, 2003, at her home. She was born in Stokes County, Nov. 11, 1911, the daughter of the late Walter Brady and Primmie Holland Tuttle. She retired from R.J. Reynolds, Brook Cove and was of the Primitive Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul R. Morton; and her son, Ronnie Morton. Surviving are her daughter, Ann (Carl) Hicks, of Danbury; her son, Ricky (Rosa) Morton, of Sandy Ridge; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret (Wilbur) Smith of Wilmington and Paige Dillon of Greensboro; a brother, Jack (Mary) Tuttle, of Rocky Mount, Va.; and four half sisters, Barbara Fowler and Nancy Gardner, both of Walnut Cove, Audrey Hamlin of Winston-Salem and Shelia Gann of Pfafftown. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Milton Gunter officiating. Burial will be in the Neal-Tuttle Family Cemetery. Motsinger Jr., Robert Everett
MIDWAY - Mr. Robert Everett Motsinger Jr., 84, passed away Sunday, July 4, 2004, at his home. He was born Feb. 20, 1920, in Davidson County to Robert E. Motsinger Sr. and Myrtle Shoaf Motsinger. Mr. Motsinger was a member of Midway United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the choir for over 45 years. He was a charter and lifetime member of the Midway Lions Club with perfect attendance as long as his health permitted. Mr. Motsinger was co-founder of Motsinger Block Plant Inc. with his brother Francis Motsinger. Preceding Mr. Motsinger in death was a sister, Lillie Mae Motsinger; three brothers, Arthur, Hollis and Raymond Motsinger; by a favorite brother-in-law, George A. Nifong; and a special friend Elmer Johnson Leak. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Carolyn Nifong Motsinger of the home; a brother, Francis Motsinger and wife Louise of Midway; three sisters, Elizabeth Long of Midway, Dorthine Oakley of Thomasville and Helen Shoaf and husband the Rev. Fred Shoaf of Farmington; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Motsinger of Thomasville and Elsie Motsinger and Rachael Nifong, both of Midway; a number of nieces and nephews; special nephews Neal N. and F. Smith Motsinger; and great-nieces Megan and Hannah Motsinger. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Midway United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robinson, Willie Mae Weldon
Mrs. Willie Mae Weldon Robinson, 84, also called "Ma Mae, " passed on Wednesday, June 30, 2004, after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by a son, William R. Duck Jr. She leaves to cherish her memories a son, Theodore (Carrie) Weldon, of the city; a devoted niece, Jeanette Weldon, of East Orange, N.J.; a daughter-in-law, Doretha (Carl) Coates, of Baltimore, Md.; two stepsons, Tommie (Edith) Robinson and Felix (Carrie) Robinson; a stepbrother, Joseph Adams; two stepsisters, Mildred Denny and Dorothy Adams, all of the city; a cousin, Charlie Williams, of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; two grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral service will be held at noon Tuesday, July 6, at New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the service. Russell, Shirley Blanche Swain
Mrs. Shirley Blanche Swain Russell, 78, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, July 3, 2004, at her home. She was born Sept. 6, 1925, in Lynchburg, Va., to James Hunt and Elizabeth English Swain. Mrs. Russell was retired from L. Roberts and Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, where she was a founding member. Surviving are her husband, B. Dawson Russell of the home; three children, Sandy Simpson and husband Steve of Orlando, Fla., Vickie Lail and husband Donald of Advance and Benjamin D. "Tripp" Russell III and wife Kim of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Christie Couture and husband Mike, Robin Allan and husband D.J., Melanie Frazier and Brooke Barbour; extended family members, Kevin, Rhonda and Spencer Powell; a sister, June Clark of Lynchburg, Va.; and two brothers, Donald Swain of Lynchburg, Va., and J.D. Swain of Raleigh. A funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. Short, Peggy Culler Saxon
Mrs. Peggy Culler Saxon Short, 68, passed away Saturday evening, July 3, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative CareCenter. Peggy was born July 27, 1925 in Forsyth County to Robert and Lutitia Reich Culler. She was a member of Griffith Baptist Church. Peggy was very involved with the Moose Lodge for 28 years, serving with the Women of the Moose. She was an avid bowler and was in the AMF bowling league. Peggy was preceded in death by brothers Richard and Agnew Culler and a sister, Mary Ellen Culler. Surviving are two sons, Joseph Saxon and his wife Roonie of Oak Island and David Saxon of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Kim Woosley and husband Steve of Lexington and Hollie Cooke and husband Tim of Winston-Salem, five grandchildren, Tara Sink and husband Wes, Brandon, Savannah, and Kayla Saxon, and Aaron Cooke; and six sisters, Bernice Scales, Imogene Marion, Faye Dowell, Shelby Thomas, Mary Culler and Norma Culler. The funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Tony Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
