Sprinkle, Bobby Gray
BOONVILLE - Mr. Bobby Gray Sprinkle, a loving and devoted husband, father, Pa Pa, brother, coach and friend was surrounded by his family and friends when he declared his independence from this world and entered heaven's gates Saturday, July 3, 2004. He was born Nov. 25, 1934, in Forsyth County to Homer Gray and Alma George Sprinkle, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law, Melvin L. Dudley. Bobby was a graduate of Old Richmond High School, class of 1953, and served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and then with the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1959. He was an active member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church of Boonville and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. as an electrician. Bobby Gray loved sports and sharing his knowledge and ability with many by coaching numerous ball teams through the years. He coached the sport, but more important he taught his teams about honesty, leadership, good morals and values. Bobby was also an avid hunter. He was the president of the Buck Trail Hunting Club for many years. He shared many laughs and smiles with all the members. Pa Pa's most loved moments were when he encouraged his grandchildren to be the best they could be. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 44 years, Shirley Dudley Sprinkle; his cherished daughters, Tammy S. Raye and husband Jerry of Boonville and Tracy S. Riazzi and husband Mike of Winston-Salem; five very special grandchildren, Brooke W. Tucker and husband Jon, Dudley G. Raye, Brittney D. Wolfe, Jordan M. Raye and Brianna J. Riazzi; a smiling and loving great-granddaughter, Zoey Elle Tucker; a very special and devoted sister, Christine S. Smith of King; and his mother-in-law, Josephine S. Dudley of Boonville. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, July 5, at Gentry Family Chapel in Yadkinville by the Rev. Ken Hand and the Rev. David Miner. There will be a graveside service with Military Honors conducted by the VFW Post No. 10346 at Mount Pleasant Methodist Church Cemetery in Boonville. A special thanks to the Dudley family and friends for all their loving care and support. Also a special thanks to Hospice, including two very compassionate caregivers, Katrina and Anita. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of Yadkin County, P.O. Box 1267, Yadkinville, NC 27055.

WELCOME - R.L. Warner, 72, died Saturday, July 3, 2004. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Center United Methodist Church Cemetery. Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Allred, Thomas Bailey
LEWISVILLE - Thomas Bailey Allred, 18, of 108 Ballyhoo Drive died tragically and unexpectedly in the early morning hours of Monday, June 28, 2004, in a traffic accident in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. Bailey was a gregarious, fun-loving soul who excelled at snow-boarding and surfing. He had been admitted to Western College in Colorado, the premier snow-boarding school in the country. He is survived by his loving parents, Donald C. Allred of Lake Norman and Kathryn G. Allred of the home. He also leaves behind his two best friends - his brothers - Dax C. Allred of Winston-Salem and William Grady "Bill" Allred of Lewisville and Boone. Also surviving are his paternal grandmother, Vivian Allred Dixon and her husband Don of Bethania; his maternal grandparents, Bailey and Mary Glenn of Winston-Salem; his loving uncles and aunts, Gay and John Glenn and their daughters, Amie and Cerre, Sue Bowen Allred and Gary and Susan Allred, all of Winston-Salem, and John and Mary Marshall and their sons, Sam, Jack and Henry, all of Carrboro; and his dear cousins, Derek Duggins, Jordan Tucci, Leslie Allred Fincher, Julie Allred and Natalie Allred Smith. He is also survived by a special uncle, Bill Glenn of Roaring Gap and Winston-Salem; a dear friend, Bruce C. Fraser of Winston-Salem; and a host of other beloved relatives and many, many friends. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, July 2, at Vogler and Son's Reynolda Road Chapel. The Rev. William H. McElveen will officiate. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. They suggest that memorials be made to Forsyth Humane Society, 61 Miller St., Winston-Salem, NC 27104. As stated by Aristotle and Socrates, "Life is meant to be lived to the fullest, " and Bailey had attained that goal before the end of his young life. His final goodbye is to his sweetheart, Millie Crockett of Winston-Salem.

Atkins, Bill Randall
ASHEBORO - Bill Randall Atkins, 71, of 1635 Arrowwood Road in Asheboro died Monday, June 28, 2004, at Randolph Hospital Inc., in Asheboro. Bill Atkins was born in Surry County on March 3, 1933, to Joby W. and Etta Nichols Atkins. He was a graduate of Guilford College and received a master's degree from UNC Chapel Hill. He attended First Baptist Church of Asheboro and Asheboro Friends Meeting. He retired from Asheboro High School, where he was a biology teacher, coach and athletic director. During his coaching career he led three varsity basketball teams to state championships. In 1998, Coach Atkins was inducted into the Guilford College Athletic Hall of Fame with his daughter, Cyd Leahy. He was an accomplished golfer, an avid gardener and most important, a very devoted father, grandfather and friend. Bill was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Jacqueline Wall Atkins; his second wife, Dr. Julia Gail Smith Atkins; a daughter, Billie Karen Atkins Crowley; and a brother, Rex Atkins. He is survived by his daughters, Amy Hinkle of Winston-Salem and Cyd Leahy and husband Joe of Snohomish, Wash.; a son, Bill Randall Atkins II of the home; a sister, Jo Nell Collier and husband Ben of Nassau Bay, Texas; his grandchildren, Peter Leahy, William Leahy and Malloy Leahy, all of Snohomish, Wash., Drew Hinkle, Caroline Hinkle and Clay Hinkle, all of Winston-Salem and Katie Crowley and Becca Crowley, both of Darnestown, Md.; a sister-in-law, Ann Atkins of Mobile, Ala.; a mother-in-law and father-in-law, Hilda and Tony Smith of Asheboro; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jeff and Donna Smith of Asheboro; a niece, Nikki Smith; and two nephews, Justin Smith and Colby Smith. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 2, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. John Rogers, the Rev. Mark Hall, the Rev. Leslie Winslow and the Rev. Garry Reeder officiating. Burial will follow at Union Grove Christian Church Cemetery. The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home from 6 to 9 p.m. today, July 1, and other times at the home. Barber Jr., Clyde G.
Mr. Clyde G. Barber Jr., 88, died Monday evening, June 28, 2004, at Arbor Acres. Mr. Barber, son of Clyde and Leza Johnson Barber, was born in Winston-Salem on Dec. 11, 1915. He was preceded in death in 2002 by his wife of 61 years, Mary Susan Forrest Barber. Mr. Barber attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served overseas in the U.S. Army during World War II and was discharged as a major. He retired from First Union National Bank after 43 years of service. Mr. Barber was an active member of Home Moravian Church, where he served as a trustee. He was instrumental in the founding of Salemtowne-the Moravian Retirement Community and served as president of the board of directors. In addition to serving as president of the United Way, he also served on the boards of the Moravian Music Foundation, Salem Academy and Salem College, Old Salem and Forsyth Country Club. Mr. Barber served for two terms on the Winston-Salem School Board. Surviving are three daughters, Susan B. Culp and husband Rob of High Point, Gail B. Wold and husband Paul of Rochester, N.Y., and Molly B. Griffin and husband Robert of Charlotte; a son, Clyde G. Barber and wife Molly of Marietta, Ga.; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, William W. Barber and wife Jean of Winston-Salem; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Emory (Polly) Barber of Washington, D.C. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, July 1, in the Moravian Graveyard. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Home Moravian Church, conducted by the Rt. Rev. D. Wayne Burkette, the Rev. C. Scott Venable and the Rev. Lehoma B. Goode. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor. Memorials may be made to Home Moravian Church, 529 S. Church St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101; Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community, 1240 Arbor Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104; or to Salemtowne-the Moravian Retirement Community, 1000 Salemtowne Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. Byrd, George W.
ZIONVILLE - Mr. George W. Byrd, 82, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004. The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Clark's Creek Baptist Church in Valle Crucis. Hampton Funeral Service in Boone is in charge of arrangements.

Cathcart, Rosetta Moore
Mrs. Rosetta Moore Cathcart, 86, daughter of Joe and Rosa Moore slipped into eternal rest when the Lord called her home on Sunday, June 27, 2004, at her home, 2330 E. First St., Winston-Salem, following a period of illness. She was born Aug. 6, 1917, in Rockhill, S.C., and relocated with her family in 1950 when they made Winston-Salem their home. She was a member of Middlefork Christian Church, where she served as a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship. She attended Rupert Bell Recreation Center's crochet and ceramic classes. Rosetta completed work at Salem Manor Hotel in 1968. Through 71 long happy years of love, caring and sharing, through sickness and health until death parted them, she was marriage to James Cathcart Sr. She was preceded in death by her parents. Rosetta leaves to cherish loving memories of her life a devoted and loving husband, James Cathcart Sr. of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Bernice Thomas of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mary (Bobby, a devoted son-in-law) Sinclair of Winston-Salem; five sons, Joe (Gloria) Cathcart, James Cathcart Jr., Frank (Bernice) Cathcart, David Cathcart and George Cathcart, all of Winston- Salem; a sister-in-law, Mae Ola Burke of Baltimore, Md.; a brother-in-law, L.E. Johnson of Champaign, Ill.; 28 grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 2, at Middlefork Christian Church, with the Rev. Garland Wallace Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Family visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Friday at the church. (Russell)

Ferguson, Michael Reid
NORTH WILKESBORO - Michael Reid Ferguson, 47, was beloved by all who met him. He was a delight to be around, uplifting and in good humor. Michael died Monday, June 28, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after an extended illness. Now that Michael is with the Lord, those who are left will greatly miss him. He was born in Wilkes County on Jan. 14, 1957, to Harry Dean Ferguson and the late Martha Pauline Reid Ferguson. Surviving are his father, Harry Ferguson Sr. of Moravian Falls; and two brothers, Harry Ferguson Jr. of Moravian Falls and David Ferguson and wife Dianne of Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, July 2, in the chapel at Scenic Memorial Gardens in Wilkesboro by the Rev. Howard Lanie. J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Wallburg Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

NASSAU - Mary Cathrine Garrett, 63, died Sunday, June 27, 2004. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel in West Jefferson.
