Hall, Richard Greene "Dick"
KING - Mr. Richard Greene "Dick" Hall, 92, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004. He was born June 22, 1912, in Stokes County to James Reid and Lula Cardwell Hall. Dick served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by a son, Wallace Greene Hall, in 1936. Surviving are his wife, Johnsie Burwell Hall; a sister, Eva Henderson; and a brother, Cleo Hall. He was a devoted member of Poplar Springs Church of Christ, where the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 1, with Don Wallace, Ralph Sproles and Lamar Tillman, ministers, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. There will be no formal visitation, but a visit to the home in the following days would be welcomed. Heath, Evelyn Frances Yokely
KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Evelyn Frances Yokely Heath, 86, passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Forsyth County on May 1, 1918, to Maggie Holder Yokely and Walter Fred Yokely. She lived in Forsyth County until 1966, when she and her husband, Leon Madison Heath, moved to Rockingham. While living in Rockingham, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church and sang in the church choir. She returned to Forsyth County in 1999 to be near her children. She then moved her church membership back to Sedge Garden United Methodist Church in Kernersville. She was marriage on April 1, 1939, to Leon Madison Heath, who preceded her in death in September 1993. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Joy Heath Bumgarner; a brother, Roger Yokely; a sister, Florence Yokely Haney; and a great-grandson, Travis Heath. Surviving are three sons and their wives, Ronald and Jean Heath of Winston-Salem, Wayne and Linda Heath of Kernersville and Mark and Debbie Heath of Cornelius; a son-in-law, William Bumgarner of North Wilkesboro; eight grandsons, Michael Heath and wife Robin, Steven Bumgarner and wife Jill, Randall Heath, Bryan Heath and wife Christy, Zachary Heath, Bradley Heath, Matthew Heath and Benjamin Heath; three great-grandsons, Tyler, Walker and Matthew Heath; three great-granddaughters, Brittany and Erica Bumgarner and Savannah Heath; two sisters, Etta Yokely Saunders of Winston-Salem and Nell Ann Yokely Keck of Radford, Va.; and a brother, Earl Yokely of Walkertown. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 2, at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ellis Rouse and the Rev. Phil Bauguess officiating. SUMMERFIELD - Mr. Silver E. Maines, 73, of 7007 Belford Road went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 30, 2004. Mr. Maines was a member of Lawndale Baptist Church and the Mighty Warriors Adult 7 Sunday school class. He was retired from AT&T after 33 years of service. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Sparta Lodge 423 AF&AM. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War. He loved gardening, woodworking, reading and spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Chester W. Maines and a grandson, Patrick Neal Hylton. Mr. Maines is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Maines; a daughter, Cheryl Maines Hylton and husband V.S.; a son, David Maines and wife Patricia; two grandchildren, Katie and Andrew Hylton, all of Greensboro; and a sister, Joan Hoppers and husband Dewey of Sparta. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 2, at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Funeral Home Chapel. A committal service will follow at Westminster Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, July 1, at the funeral home. Monroe, Johnnie Lindon Morris
Mrs. Johnnie Lindon Morris Monroe of Winston-Salem died peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Wednesday, June 30, 2004. The youngest of nine children, she was born April 5, 1911, in Granite Quarry to Louella Isabella Russell Morris. She proudly bore the name of her father, John Lindon Morris, who died nearly three months before her birth. Mrs. Monroe was educated in the Charlotte and Salisbury public schools and graduated from Boyden High School in 1928. She retired as office manager from Colonial Stores in 1973 after 28 years of service in Salisbury, Concord and Winston-Salem. She was a lifelong member of Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church in Salisbury, where she was active in United Methodist Women. In recent years she regularly attended Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem as an associate member and was an active member of Circle 1. In retirement, Mrs. Monroe enjoyed traveling with family and friends. In addition to her travels in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, she visited the British Isles and continental Europe. Until her recent illness, she was an enthusiastic and frequent attendee of concerts, ballets, plays, movies and sporting events. Her greatest joy was time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Monroe was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Oliver Monroe; a granddaughter, Katherine Sue Maynard; and a great-granddaughter, Kinsley Monroe Brown. She was also preceded in death by her five brothers and three sisters and their spouses, Carlie Harrison Morris and wife Vermelle, Geromie Clark Morris and wife Mary, Ethel Morris Hodge and husband George, Everett Gurney Morris, Nancy Morris Leazer and husband Fred Leazer Sr., Zeddie Watkins Morris and wife Elizabeth, Opel Conard Morris and Olive Vester Morris. She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Carolyn Monroe Wellman and husband Herbert H. Wellman of Concord, Charles R. Monroe Sr. and wife Susan L. Melville of Winston-Salem, Cayle Monroe Foley and husband Kirby R. Foley Sr. of Chesapeake, Va., and Geraldine Monroe Borgman and husband Robert D. Borgman of Winston-Salem. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, Joel Andrew Wellman of Concord, Richard Kevin Wellman of Concord, Amy Wellman Barrett of Charlotte, Charles R. Monroe Jr. of Charlotte, David C. Monroe of Lewisville, Stephanie Monroe Gardiner of Corpus Christi, Texas, Elizabeth Monroe Barber of Advance, Beverly Paige Monroe of Clemmons, Kirby R. Foley Jr. of Richmond, Ill., Kameron Foley Brown of Chesapeake, Va., Melissa Ann Maynard of Durham, Yelena N. Boyeva of New York City, Deborah Ann Borgman of Brandon, Miss., and Darth Michael Borgman of Hattiesburg, Miss. Survivors also include 13 great-grandchildren, Matthew Drew Wellman, Christina Marie Barrett, John Albert Barrett IV and Charles Lindon Barrett, Sarah Elizabeth Barber and Kathleen Whitley Barber, Katherine Juliana Gardiner and Thomas Allan Gardiner, Frances Whitley Monroe, Megan Elizabeth Whalen, Alison Joann Whalen, John Richard Whalen and Kristin Marie Howett. Morris, Phillip Henry
Mr. Phillip Henry Morris, 68, passed away suddenly on Monday, June 28, 2004, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. He was born Feb. 29, 1936, in rural Guilford County to Henry Rathbone and Hazel Irene Carter Morris. Mr. Morris graduated in 1954 from James A. Gray High School and has served on the committee for each reunion. He was a graduate of Culver Stockton College in Canton, Mo., with a degree in physical education, and was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame for playing football, baseball and basketball. He was a State Farm Insurance Co. agent for 35 years, where he was a member of the Millionaire Club for 10 years. Before joining State Farm, he was a teacher and coach at the James A. Gray High School for seven years. He was a past member of the Konnoak Lions Club. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Moravian Church. Mr. Morris had a passion for people and nature. He was fun-loving and never met a stranger. As a leap-year baby, he loved to explain that he recently turned 17, not 68. Surviving are his wife, Linda Mellette Morris of Mooresville and principal of Cornelius Elementary School; a son, Phillip Eric Morris and wife Lynne Sumner Morris and their two children, Eric and Lauren of Cincinnati, Ohio; his mother, of Winston-Salem; and a sister, Lee Morris Essic and husband Thomas Lee Essic of Advance and their children and grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 1, at Trinity Moravian Church, with the Rev. Chris Thore and Dr. Henry May officiating. Burial will follow in God's Acre at Old Salem. Murphy, Virginia Dare Koontz
CLEMMONS - Virginia Dare Koontz Murphy, 74, of Grant Road in the community of Arcadia passed away at home on Wednesday, June 30, 2004. She was born in Davidson County on Jan. 28, 1930, to Burley Marshall Koontz and Daisy Cornelia Fishel Koontz. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband of 45 years, Harrison G. Murphy Jr.; an infant daughter, Judy Murphy; and four brothers, Lonnie Colin Koontz of Welcome, Holbart Fishel Koontz of Welcome, Belton Bryce Koontz of Reeds and James Stowe Koontza of Welcome. Surviving are a son, Gary Grant Murphy and his wife, Vickie Wilkins Murphy of Arcadia; and a daughter, Cornelia Murphy Kirley and her husband, Stephen W. Kirley of Arcadia. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Stephanie Murphy and special friend Briget Nestor, Brent Murphy, Christina Staker Smith and her husband, Bradley M. Smith, and Gwendolyn Staker Rominger and her husband, Brad N. Rominger, all of Arcadia. She is survived by two great-grandchildren, Kaleb Staker and Kennedy Smith, both of Arcadia. She is also survived by two brothers, Leon Koontz of Welcome and Conley Koontz of Southport. Virginia was a longtime member of Friedberg Moravian Church, where she loved to play the handbells. She loved to sing in the Senior Choir and the Senior Chorus. Well-known for her hugs, she, along with her hugs, will be missed. During her courageous battle with cancer, her determination was always present. Her one request to all she met was "just touch someone, touch them gently on their hand or shoulder to let them know you care." She worked at Hanes Knitwear for many years. She later went to work at Forsyth Memorial Hospital on the Whitaker Rehabilitation Unit. Fellow employees fondly referred to her as "Smurf." The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 2, at Friedberg Moravian Church, by the Rev. Thomas Shelton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, July 1, at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel. The family would like to express to all in her extended family and church family a special thanks for all the love and support they have shown to her and her family.
