Staley, Lucy Ann Norman
TOBACCOVILLE - Mrs. Lucy Ann Norman Staley, 67, of Tobaccoville died Friday, June 11, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Nov. 20, 1936, in Forsyth County to Lucius Calvin and Cora Livengood Norman. Mrs. Staley was a former member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church and was a current member of Mizpah Moravian Church. In 1955 she graduated with the last class from Old Town High School. She was retired from Wachovia Bank following 371/2 years of service. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, L. Cecil Norman and A. Delmar Norman; and two sisters, Lena Irene Tise and Virginia Dare Southern. Survivors include her husband, C. Gwyn Staley of the home; two daughters, Sharon Staley Ledesma and husband Mark of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Melanie Staley Sharpe and husband Doug of Boone; four grandchildren, Marc Ledesma Jr. and Laura Ledesma of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Cassie Sharpe and Jonathan Sharpe of Boone; two brothers, Archie L. Norman and Vernon G. Norman of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Merdie N. Harper of Winston-Salem and Julia N. Lowrimore of Raleigh; and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, June 14, at Forsyth Memorial Park by the Rev. John Boling and the Rev. Charles Fishel. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Turner, David Wilson
MOCKSVILLE - Mr. David Wilson Turner, 61, of Mocksville died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 2, 1942, in Kinston to Frank Russell and Lillie Wilson Turner. Mr. Turner served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a pilot as well as a crop duster. Mr. Turner also worked for US Airways Express CCAIR until he went to work for Pace Airlines as chief pilot. He also enjoyed shagging. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Johnson Turner of the home; a son, Brad Turner of LaGrange; a daughter, Beth Mosher and husband Ken of Pittsboro; a stepson, Chris Johnson of Mocksville; two grandchildren, Ryan and Kendra Johnson; and two sisters, Delphia Parrott and husband Billy of Morehead City and Mary Ann Wagner and husband Joe of Four Oaks. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today, June 12, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel, with Pastor Kristy Rolison officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Venable, Pauline Ashburn
MAYODAN - Pauline Ashburn Venable, 84, of 501 N. Ayersville Road died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at Moses Cone Hospital. Mrs. Venable was born June 4, 1920, in Surry County, a daughter of the late John Ashburn and the late Violenna Jeanette Jones Ashburn. She was a machine operator with Washington Mills for 26 years and retired from Burlington industries with 13 years of service. She was a lifetime member of Clearview Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Early Twin Venable, in 1997. She is survived by her daughter, Bette Garbett and husband Bill of Deltaville, Va.; her son, Gene Venable of Beaver Dam, Va.; her grandson, Steven Garbett of New York; and her faithful companion, Tar Baby. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, June 12, at Clearview Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert Rorrer and the Rev. Roger Atkins officiating. Interment will follow in Mayodan Municipal Cemetery. The family would like to thank the Moses Cone Hospital trauma team, the neurological surgical staff, her nieces, who showed the depth of their special love, and her loyal friends, Bobby and Dot Dunlap. Anders, Lois Ann Stoltz
RURAL HALL - Mrs. Lois Ann Stoltz Anders, 55, fought a long, courageous battle with cancer and went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 9, 2004. She was born Jan. 4, 1949, in Forsyth County to Wesley Edward and Annie Bell Ridings Stoltz. Mrs. Anders was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister who loved her family and her church. She was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in King. Mrs. Anders is survived by her husband, Robert Lee Anders of the home; two sons, Carl Edward Bolden and wife Deborah of Arcadia and Daniel Scott Bolden of Rural Hall; two stepdaughters, Stephanie Lee Anders of Old Town and Amanda Lynn Collins and husband Gray of Yadkinville; six grandchildren, Timothy, Kyle, Dustin, Shallen, Michael and Ashley; a sister, Alice Bowman and husband Sonny of Rural Hall; two brothers, James Stoltz and wife Lisa of Rural Hall and Philip Stoltz, also of Rural Hall; her beloved dog, "Pongo"; and an extended loving family. The funeral service for Mrs. Anders will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 11, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Hall with the Rev. Gray Fansler and Pastor Scott Vernon officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, June 10, at the funeral home. Bitting, Paul Steele
RALEIGH - Mr. Paul Steele Bitting, aka "Daddy B, " of Raleigh and formerly of 1816 Kentucky Ave. in Winston-Salem passed away Monday, June 7, 2004. Born to the late Wade and Josephine Steele Bitting Sr., he was a native of Winston-Salem, where he attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County public schools and graduated from Atkins High School. Mr. Bitting also attended NC A&T State University, where he received his bachelor's degree and conducted further study in New York City's garment district. Mr. Bitting was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country during World War II. Professionally, he was an educator at the Greene County Training School in Snow Hill and retired from the N.C. Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. His community endeavors included membership in Rising Ebenezer Baptist Church and the Disabled American Veterans, volunteer activity for the Patterson Street YMCA and coaching/mentoring duties to many of our youth who knew him affectionately as "Daddy B." In his leisure, Mr. Bitting became an avid musician who loved music. Fraternally, Brother Bitting was Past Master of Salem Lodge 139, Past Patron of Meridian Chapter 308, a member of King Solomon Consistory 64, and Sethos Temple 170 A.A.E.O.N.M.S. He was predeceased by his wife, Arnease Penn Bitting; and two sons, James Sligh and Tyrone Mitchell. Surviving are a son, Paul F. (Lynn) Bitting of Raleigh; a daughter, Barrie Mitchell of Long Island, N.Y.; his grandchildren, Paul L. Bitting of Raleigh, Sherry Bitting of Brooklyn, N.Y., Andre Sligh of Atlanta, Ga., Tasha Stewart of Greensboro, Tamika Mitchell of New York, Brian Bitting of Atlanta, Ga., Velaris Mitchell of Los Angeles, Calif., and Keisha Baker of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Kathleen Bitting Mock of Winston-Salem; and a host of sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The funeral service will be conducted at noon Friday, June 11, at Rising Ebenezer Baptist Church, with Pastor William Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Fuller, James P.
Mr. James P. Fuller, 72, aka "Stick, " of 1080 Betty Drive, one strong soldier, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 6, 2004. He was born Sept. 15, 1931, to the late James Eaton and Addie Gregory Fuller. Mr. Fuller moved to Winston-Salem in 1973 to take up a trade at Goodwill Industries in upholstery until he retired in 1983. Mr. Fuller was a loving and devoted husband and father. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 53 years, Sarah V. Fuller; two daughters, Arvenetta (John) Tharrington of Oxford and Donna Fuller of the home; two grandsons, Keon and Keron; a sister, Maggie (John Lee) Cozart of Oxford; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 12, at Betts and Son Funeral Home in Oxford. Special thanks to his nurse, Annett Motsinger, his neighbor, Lisa Wright and many others.

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Dorothy Lea Cook Gaither, 65, of Walt Wilson Road died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Gaither was born Jan. 30, 1939, in Davie County to the late Johnny and Louise Massey Cook and was a longtime employee of the Sara Lee Corp. in the finishing department. She was a member of Turrentine Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Cook; and two brothers, Dewey and Roger Cook. Survivors include her husband, Bill Gaither of the home; a son, Dana (Jill) Gaither of Mocksville; three grandsons, Brent, Brian and Bradley Gaither, all of Mocksville; and a brother, Robert Cook of Mocksville. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 11, at Turrentine Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Joe Smith officiating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Mrs. Jean West Cook Hartgrove, 66, passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a long battle with cancer. Mrs. Hartgrove was born Sept. 22, 1937, in Forsyth County to the late Joseph W. West and Lota Sutphin West Warren. She was employed for many years at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center as a medical transcriptionist. Mrs. Hartgrove was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She is survived by three sons, Randy Cook of Winston-Salem, David Cook and wife Karen of Pfafftown and Mark Hartgrove and wife Nikki of Linwood; two daughters, Melva Williams of Charleston, S.C., and Heather Perkins and husband David of Kernersville; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; her mother, Lota Warren of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Joann Horton of Winston-Salem and Lynn Timothy of Phoenix, Ariz.; her special friends, Jack and Cynthia, Dr. Feree, Sandy, Janice and Mary and Charles Davis; along with many other co-workers and friends. An 11 a.m. funeral service will be conducted Friday, June 11, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Dr. Robert Decker officiating. Higgins, Edward Burr
KERNERSVILLE - Edward Burr Higgins, 84, of 608 W. Mountain St. died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at his home. He was born Dec. 30, 1919, in Guilford County, son of the late Sylvester Starr and Beulah Jeffreys Higgins. He was a member of Cherry Street United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school for over 45 years. He served on the Kernersville Board of Alderman for 13 years and served on the Kernersville Planning Board. Mr. Higgins was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of VFW Post 5253 and a member of the Kernersville Civitan Club. Mr. Higgins had his own accounting business, Edward B. Higgins Accounting Services, and was a member of the N.C. Society of Accountants. Surviving are his wife, Gladys Corn Higgins of the home; two daughters, Mary Kidd and husband John of Trinity and Deidre Sprinkle and husband Bill of Winston-Salem; a son, Edward B. Higgins Jr. and wife Pam of Wilmington; and six grandchildren, Kristan Higgins, Ashley Higgins, Nathan Higgins, Rebecca Kidd, Curry Sprinkle and Matt Sprinkle. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, June 11, at Cherry Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. Warren Owens. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory.
