Isbister, Cleo
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - Mrs. Cleo Isbister passed away Monday, June 9, 2004. She was born in Buckley, Mich., to John Quincy and Blanche Pearl Hall. Following high school in Traverse City, she studied at the University of Michigan. She marriage Roy Isbister of Detroit and became mother to two children, Linda Diane Isbister of Dallas, Texas, and David Kent Isbister of Winston-Salem, N.C. In later years she completed her degree in journalism at Michigan State University. She was a reporter for the Stevens Point Journal in Stevens Point, Wisc., before being promoted to society editor. She was active in the Zonta professional women's organization for many years. Her enjoyment of her youth in Traverse City is captured in a series of autobiographical experiences that she authored entitled, Dancing with the Daffodils. Her greatest gift to her children was teaching them to love reading literature and history. Her retirement years were spent in Traverse City taking care of her parents and being near the natural beauty that she loved so much. Mrs. Isbister was a longtime Presbyterian and an active member of the Traverse City Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her two children; her sister, Betty Peterson of Harlington, Texas; and three grandchildren, Holly Kent Isbister, Laurel Christian Isbister and Katherine Currie Netter. She was predeceased by her other sister, Alma Elizabeth Sweeney. A memorial service is planned for a later date.
Lawrence, Beckie Brown
Mrs. Beckie Brown Lawrence of Winston-Salem died Monday, June 7, 2004, at Yadkinville Nursing Center. She was born Jan. 29, 1918, in Yadkin County to Whit Brown and Della Cook Brown. She was a homemaker and a member of Salem Baptist Church. Mrs. Lawrence was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Peyton Lawrence, who passed away in 1984; six brothers, John, Floyd, Ruebin, Melton, Fletcher and Buster Brown; and a sister, Gertrude Walker. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Vetral Gardner Blankenship of Hamptonville; and a number of nieces and nephews. The service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, at Vogler's Main Street Chapel with burial following at Woodland Cemetery. Pastor Floyd Boles will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, June 8, at Vogler's Main Street Chapel in Winston-Salem.
Lawrence, Ruth Kearns
SEAGROVE - Mrs. Ruth Kearns Lawrence of 6696 Lawrence Farm Road, Seagrove died Sunday, June 6, 2004, at her home of an extended illness. She was a lifelong resident of Randolph County, born and reared in the Caraway Creek section-Lexington Highway. She had lived in Seagrove since 1939. She was a graduate of High Point College. She was employed in the Moore County and Randolph County school systems for 32 years, having retired in 1972 without missing a day due to illness. Referring to her years in schoolwork, Mrs. Lawrence once said, "If I have any youth left in me, I like to think it's because of my association with second-graders for so many years." She was secretary and treasurer of the Belvidere School Reunion from 1975 to 2001; a correspondent for the Randolph Guide from 1972 to 2001; a charter member of the Randolph County Retired Teacher's Association; a life member of NCAE; vice-president of the Lawrence Family Reunion for many years, beginning in 1982; secretary and treasurer of the Lawrence Family Cemetery Fund until 2002; and a member of the Farm Bureau of Randolph County, the Why Not Memorial Association, the Senior Citizens Association and the Seagrove United Methodist Church, where she taught the primary Sunday school class for 41 years. When she lived with her daughter, she was a member of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Retired School Personnel and the Alma Nunn Sunday School Class of Ardmore United Methodist Church. She was the youngest daughter and one of seven children of the late Julius C. and Donna Lowe Kearns and the widow of J. Leighton Lawrence. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Thomas R. (Donna L.) Staley of Winston-Salem; a son, W. Thomas Lawrence Sr. of Seagrove; a grandson, Tommy Lawrence of Asheboro; three granddaughters, Denette Staley of Winston-Salem, Leatha Staley of Greensboro and Linda Oakley of Roxboro; a great-granddaughter; and three great-grandsons. Her younger son, J. Gilbert Lawrence, preceded her in death in 1969. The funeral rite for Mrs. Lawrence will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, in the Seagrove United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bill Foust, pastor and the Rev. Bob Boyd will officiate. Interment will follow in the Why Not Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. today, June 8, at Pugh Funeral Home. Lemon, Lessie W.
Ms. Lessie W. Lemon, 69, of 1240 Dublin Drive passed away Saturday, June 5, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Lessie was born to Robert and Essie Wilks of Chester, S.C. She was the middle child of 15 siblings. Lessie attended Finley High School in Chester, S.C., and left at an early age to work. After many years of living in Baltimore, Md., she returned to Winston-Salem, where she began her career with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Whitaker Park, where she worked until she retired after 30 years of service. Lessie was also a member of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Sunday school and Bible study class. Lessie was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Essie Wilks; three children, Theretha Wilks, Waymond Moore and Tamava Lemon; two sisters, Minnie Hatton and Mary Alice Murphy; and two brothers, Robert L. Wilks and Hugolden Wilks. She was marriage to John H. Lemon and to this union were born seven children. Surviving to cherish her loving memory are four children, Nathaniel Wilks, Tina Torain, Tangie Rivas and Tanya Bucknor; her brothers and sisters, Jack C. (Eloise) Wilks of Chester, S.C., Essiemae Bryant of Baltimore, Md., Willie Wilks of Chester, S.C., Eberlene Taylor of Estill, S.C., Alvin (Denise) Wilks of Baltimore, Md., Margaret W. (William) Kirkland and Douglas (Mae Audrey) Wilks of Winston-Salem, Philemon Wilks of Baltimore, Md., James S. Wilks of Winston-Salem and Annie F. Bush of Columbia, S.C.; a devoted daughter-in-law, Diane Moore of South Carolina; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. J.R. Samuels officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Master Henry Chrishauwn Lewis Jr., one month and four days, of 975 Motor Road in Winston-Salem passed Thursday, June 3, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born April 27, 2004, in Forsyth County to Henry Chrishauwn Lewis and Michelle Renee Wilson. He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Mrs. Mattie and Mr. John Lewis. He leaves to cherish his memories his parents; his sisters, Miss T'Keyah J. Wilson, Miss Charla' R. Wilson, Miss Ja'Chae A. Hooper and Miss Cri'Shonaie J. Lewis; his brother, Mr. Kev'Ric Bishop; his grandparents, Ms. D'Lisa Yvonne Wilson (Dwight) Smoot, Mr. Micheal E. (Jackie) Smith and Mrs. Sandra and Henry Mitchell; his great-grandparents, Ms. Emma L. Wilson and Mr. and Mrs. John and Mattie Lewis, Ms. Josephine Leak and Cleon Gaines; and his aunts and uncles, Mrs. Reyna (Richard) Smith, Mr. Kwesi O. Wilson, Mr. Deron Lewis, Mr. Larue Wilson, Mr. Terrance Mitchell, Ms. Shekira J. Mitchell, Ms. Natasha Mitchell, Ms. Jean Wilson and Ms. Shanita Scott. A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, June 8, at the Frances S. and Jerry C. Gilmore Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Tim Gaskins and the Rev. Judy Wimmer officiating. The Rev. Jerry Drayton will be the eulogist. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3 p.m. today at the funeral chapel. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from 813 Kimber Road. Dinner will follow the funeral at 148 Brookhill Park Court in Rural Hall. Majer, Walter Stanislaus
Mr. Walter Stanislaus Majer, 82, of Winston-Salem died at his home Friday, June 4, 2004. He was born in Fall River, Mass., to Peter and Mary Beitzel Majer. Mr. Majer was a veteran of World War II and Korea, serving in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy. He retired after 20 years of service to the Navy, where he received numerous awards and medals. Mr. Majer was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Rural Hall. His wife, Carolyn T. Majer, preceded him in death. Survivors include four grandchildren, Ann M. Boles and husband, Darin, of Lexington, Debbie Anderson, Kathy Rogers and Bobby Martin; six great-grandchildren, Jodi, Lucas, Dean, Jamie, David and Alecia; two sisters, Helen Belanger and Wanda Cordeiro, both of Fall River, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Charles Carver officiating. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. Myers, W. Earle
DENVER, N.C. - W. Earle Myers, a former longtime resident of Winston-Salem died Saturday, June 5, 2004, at Carolinas Medical Center University in Charlotte after a lingering illness. He was born May 21, 1928, in Union, S.C., to Oscar Winfred and Marie Bellotte Myers. While Mr. Myers was still an infant, the family moved to Kings Mountain, where his father owned Myers Department Store. Earle received his early education in the Kings Mountain public schools, then graduated from Darlington School for Boys in Rome, Ga., in 1946. He graduated summa cum laude from Davidson College in Davidson with majors in physics and math. He earned a master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. He was employed with Reed Research in Washington, D.C., before serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Detrick, Md., where he perfected methods to combat biological warfare. In 1956, he was recruited by Bell Laboratories to come to Winston-Salem as part of a team to set up a research lab at the Western Electric facility on Lexington Road. This group later worked at the Guilford Center facility. He worked there for 21 years before being transferred to Whippany, N.J. He was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church and leader of its Boy Scout troop. He retired to Lake Norman in 1987. He was predeceased by both parents. Surviving are his former wife, Myra Dickson Myers of the city; two sons, Stephen Early Myers and John Dickson Myers, both of Charlotte; a daughter, Laura Myers Poppe and husband Steve Poppe of Babylon, N.Y.; four grandchildren, LeeAnn Dickson Poppe, Derek Steven Poppe, Jessica Hayley Myers and Amanda Lane Myers; a sister, Eleanor Myers Rhyne and husband Robert of Charlotte; a brother-in-law, Ralph A. Dickson and wife Lou of Gastonia; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Myers requested that no service be held. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at the Myers home, 129 Breckindale Circle in Winston-Salem.
