Goad, James Thomas "Jimmie"
MOUNT AIRY - Mr. James Thomas "Jimmie" Goad, 85, of Mount Airy, husband of Bonnie Smith Goad, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Goad was born in Surry County on Jan. 27, 1919, to the late James Moir and Ada Elizabeth Hawks Goad. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II, a retired salesman from Spencer's Inc., a member of Grace Moravian Church and a past Master of Renfro Masonic Lodge 691, where he was a member for 52 years. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Bonnie Smith Goad of the home; a daughter, Judith Goad Duke of Winston-Salem; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Smith and Nanci Jo Goad of Mount Airy; three granddaughters and spouses, Allison and Jeffrey Parrott of Dalton, Ga., Jennifer and Bob Barth of Weehawken, N.J., and Joy and David Lee of Winston-Salem; two great-grandsons, Todd Parrott and Joshua Parrott, both of Dalton, Ga.; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Ruth and Ed Watt of Macon, Ga., and Susan and Larry Patterson, Jean and Jasper Marion, Mary Good and Faye Goad, all of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Judy Goad of Cana, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Goad was preceded in death by four sisters, Lenora Sumner, Helen Eldridge, Wilma Byrd and Maggie Bolejack; and two brothers, Albert Peters and Bob Peters. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at Grace Moravian Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Timothy Byerly, with burial in God's Acre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grace Moravian Church Memorial Fund or Cemetery Fund, 1401 N. Main St., Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, June 4, at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy.
Gobble, Vivian Katherine Snyder
Mrs. Vivian Katherine Snyder Gobble, 82, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born June 15, 1921, in Forsyth County to Fred and Ruth Miller Snyder. Mrs. Gobble was a member of Ardmore Moravian Church. She was a beloved mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. F.L. Gobble Jr., and two sons, Lee and Craig. Surviving are a daughter, Dianne Hinshaw and husband, Steve, of Pinehurst; two granddaughters, Sarah Hinshaw of Winston-Salem and Amy Kurzeja and husband, Paul, of Charlotte; a brother, Conard Snyder of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Annie Ruth Cox of Colfax and Clarice Waddell of Winston-Salem; as well as several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 5, at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, June 4, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Gwin, Dixie Hall
Dixie Hall Gwin passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Salemtowne. She was born June 3, 1923, in Montgomery, Ala., to Matthew Warren Hall II and Sara Orum Hall. She spent her childhood years in her hometown of Midway, Ala. She graduated from Auburn University in 1945 with a degree in home economics and English and later in life earned a master's degree in elementary education from UNC-Greensboro. Dixie was marriage to Jack Paul Gwin in 1947 until his death in 2001. Dixie and her family moved to Winston-Salem from Union Springs, Ala., in 1956 when Jack took a job with Western Electric on Lexington Road. After having taught in schools in various towns in Alabama and then in Winston-Salem, Dixie retired to pursue her art. She also enjoyed many years of dancing with Jack and friends in Winston-Salem. Surviving Dixie are her three children, Myra Gwin-Summers and husband Richard Summers of Hillsborough, Paul Gwin and wife Elaine of Winston-Salem and Dinah Stuart and husband Delma of Westfield; three granddaughters, Leigh Gwin of Winston-Salem, Ellen Gwin of Boone/Winston-Salem and Ashley Gwin Summers of Hillsborough; a sister-in-law, Betty W. Hall of Eufaula, Ala.; a nephew, Matthew Warren Hall IV and wife Terri and their four children, Allyson, Sara, Emily and Timothy of Tallahassee, Fla.; and a niece, Amy Gulledge and husband Jerry and their two children, Josh and Chelsey of Eufaula, Ala. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack Paul Gwin; and her brother, Matthew Warren Hall III of Midway, Ala. In addition to her family, Dixie leaves behind many dear friends from the past 48 years in Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 6, at Knollwood Baptist Church with the Rev. Christopher Chapman officiating. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the ceremony. Hampton, Charles "Charlie"
KERNERSVILLE - Charles "Charlie" Hampton, 57, passed away at home Wednesday, June 2, 2004. He was born March 14, 1947, in Guilford County, the son of Fred E. and Eva Pyrtle Hampton. Mr. Hampton was employed by Duke Power for over 30 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Hampton. Survivors include his mother, Eva P. Hampton; his wife, Mary Idol Hampton; his son, Joe Hampton and wife Lisa; and his granddaughter, Kaitlyn Grace Hampton, all of Kernersville. He was a loving uncle to his nephews, Andrew, Brent, George, Matthew and David Idol Jr.; his nieces, Dawn Fogleman and husband Jason, Melissa Paloumbas and husband George; and his special great-nieces, Trinity Idol, Taylor and Maria Paloumbas and Cy and Madelyn Fogleman. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5, at Hanes-Lineberry Pierce Chapel. Burial will be at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Hunter, Walter F.
Mr. Walter F. Hunter, 87, of 863 Foxwood Place, Winston-Salem, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Hunter was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hunter. Mr. Hunter was a native of Detroit, Mich. After graduating from high school he served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Hunter retired from Daimler Chrysler and relocated to Winston-Salem in 1989. Mr. Hunter was a faithful member of St. James Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a soloist and choir member. Mr. Hunter was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mary Hunter; and several brothers and sisters of Detroit, Mich. He is survived by a son, Render Edwards of Detroit, Mich.; a daughter, Shirley Duncan of the home; a brother, James Hunter of Detroit, Mich.; a sister, Florance Hunter of San Leandro, Calif.; four grandchildren, Robert Jr., Lamar, Jabar and Michelle Duncan of the home; a devoted nephew, Author Hunter of San Leandro, Calif.; and a host of nieces, nephews, family members and friends. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at the chapel of Russell Funeral Home with the Rev. Mack McConnell officiating. Johnson, Jessie Mae Bostick
On Sunday, May 30, 2004, God called home his angel, Mrs. Jessie Mae Bostick Johnson, after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Johnson was born Dec. 21, 1915, in Florence, S.C. She was the youngest of four daughters of Benjamin and Daisy Timmons-Blaine. In the early 1930s she marriage Allen Bostick and from this union there were three children. Mrs. Johnson later marriage Junior James Johnson and from this union there was a daughter. At an early age Mrs. Johnson joined the St. Paul AME Church of Florence, S.C., where she was a very faithful member. In the late 1940s Mrs. Johnson moved to North Carolina, where she has resided for over 60 years. While living in Winston-Salem, Mrs. Johnson joined Union Chapel Baptist Church, where she became a very dedicated member until her health began to fail. For many years Mrs. Johnson was an employee of Bruce Hospital of Florence, S.C. She also worked many years for Thalhimers. Mrs. Johnson was a retired employee of the Hilton Inn. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands; a daughter, Rosa Bostick; a son, Allen Bostick Jr.; and two sisters, Annie Lou and Inell. She leaves to cherish her precious memories two beloved daughters, Betti (Albert) Williamson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Margaret (Ronald) Briston of Winston-Salem; a sister, Rosa L. Spears of Florence, S.C.; a stepsister, Clara Bacote; a stepbrother, Cobbie Bacote; a devoted cousin, Maxine Meeks; 10 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at Union Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Konnie Robinson officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. WELCOME - Mr. William "Bill" Clemon Johnson Jr., 79, of Welcome died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Aug. 26, 1924, in Forsyth County to William Clemon Johnson Sr. and Elizabeth Wall Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church. He was retired from AT&T with 35 years of service. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeff Johnson. Surviving are a daughter, Judy J. Johnson of Salisbury; a son, William Steven Johnson; three granddaughters, Jennifer Johnson Barlow, Jody Johnson Long and Elizabeth Leigh Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Hannah Long, Nicholas Long and Hayley Barlow; a sister, Betty Spillman; and special nieces and a nephew, Karen Howard, Lynn Thrower and Tim Cruse. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5, at Union Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Harris and Dr. Harold Fletcher officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. Johnson will lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today, June 4, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and other times at the home of Jennifer Barlow, 1656 Welcome-Bethesda Road, Welcome.
