Cohn, Sue Beckerdite
Mrs. Sue Beckerdite Cohn, 87, died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Cohn was born Aug. 8, 1916, in Davidson County to George H. and Rose Ellen Hall Beckerdite. She was a retired employee of Sears and was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll W. Cohn in 1968. Mrs. Cohn was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church and was active in Meals on Wheels. She was a wonderful cook and loved to share her meals with family and friends. Surviving are a son, Jim Cohn and wife Debbie of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Anita Hege of Greensboro; four grandchildren, Brian Hege and wife Alison of Wilkesboro, Matthew Cohn and wife Nok, and Kristin Cohn and Matthew Berry, all of Winston-Salem; a brother, Bill Beckerdite of Winston-Salem; a sister, Charlotte Cleary of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, at Mineral Springs Baptist Church, by the Rev. Gus Thomas and Dr. Cecil Cave. A private family burial service will be held at Midway United Methodist Church after the family has received friends briefly at the church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, April 5, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Fletcher, James Franklin
Mr. James Franklin Fletcher, 81, of 4825 Dippen Road died Friday, April 2, 2004, after an eight-month illness. Mr. Fletcher was born June 17, 1922, in Forsyth County to James "Ham" Fletcher and Clara Mae Stirewalt Fletcher. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the 2nd Armored Division under Gen. George Patton and in the Battle of the Bulge. A member of Oak Grove Moravian Church since 1962, he served on various committees and church boards. He was employed by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for 33 years, retiring in 1983. Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher enjoyed traveling worldwide. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gracie Kiger Fletcher, of the home; a daughter, Frankie Petree, of Winston-Salem; an adopted daughter and great-granddaughter, Jessie Fletcher of the home; a stepdaughter, Jean (Richard) Fulp, of Walkertown; three grandchildren, Stephanie (Lige) Boswell, Clint (Shannon) Petree and Debbie (Jesse) Poindexter; five great-grandchildren, James Fletcher Burgess, Katie Priddy, Zack Priddy, Angel Neal and Christopher Neal; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Ashley and Nicholas Dawson; and an expected great-great-grandchild, Haileigh Elizabeth. In addition, he is survived by a sister, Gladys (Tom) Breeden, of Randleman; and a brother, Bob (Susan) Fletcher, of Greensboro. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 4, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, April 5, at Oak Grove Moravian Church by the Rev. Matthew Allen, the Rev. Charles Fishel and the Rev. Norman Byerly. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. Frances L. Franklin, 75, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, April 3, 2004. Survivors include a daughter, Jane Raper of Clemmons; three sons, Rick Alspaugh of Winston-Salem, Gene Alspaugh of Winston-Salem and Don Alspaugh of Clemmons; her mother, Thelma Lois Hodges of Advance; a sister, Helen Hull of Galax, Va.; a brother, Richard Franklin of Boone; her grandchildren, Jessie Alspaugh, Marie Alspaugh, Crystal Alspaugh, Angel Alspaugh, Heather Alspaugh, Brittany Alspaugh, Michael Martin, Bryan Martin, Susie Martin and Sandy Alspaugh, all of Winston-Salem; and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, April 5, at Westside Baptist Church.
Fulton, Katherine Korte
Mrs. Katherine Korte Fulton, 90, died at her home on Friday, April 2, 2004. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother. Kay was born in Richmond, Va., on Aug. 16, 1913, to German immigrants, Joseph Bernard and Maria Harling Korte. She attended Saint Patrick's Catholic School in Richmond. She marriage Robert Page Fulton on Dec. 15, 1936, a marriage that lasted 52 years until Bob's death in 1988. They moved from Richmond to Roanoke in 1953 and lived there until 1960, when Bob joined W.E. Graham and Sons (Vulcan Materials Co.) in Winston-Salem. Kay ran a busy household of five children and a menagerie of pets, and she participated in many church and school activities. She played the piano beautifully and enjoyed working in her yard and flower garden, which she continued to do until her health declined in 1991. She was a member of Saint Leo the Great Catholic Church. Kay is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Phyllis Fulton of Mount Prospect, Ill., and John and Charlotte Fulton of Elizabethton, Tenn.; and three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Carter Hammond of Winston-Salem, Katherine and Ronald Wicker of Raleigh and Christine and J.D. Sheppard of Winston-Salem. In addition, she is survived by nine grandchildren, Deborah (Douglas) Ellis of Barrington Hills, Ill., David (Karen) Fulton of Elgin, Ill., Kevin (Donna) Fulton of Plainfield, Ill., Stephen (Laura Richardson) Fulton of San Jose, Calif., Ellen (Jamie Hegarty) Fulton of Chicago., Heather (Andy) Youngblood of Pittsboro, Blair and Lindsay Wicker of Raleigh and Andrew Sheppard of Winston-Salem; a stepgrandson, Matthew Hammond, of Chicago; and six great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Robert Fulton of Elgin, Ill., Alex and Jennifer Fulton of Plainfield, Ill., and John Thomas and Emma Youngblood of Pittsboro. She is also survived by her sister, Mary "Mae" (L.A.) Rhoades of Culpeper, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Adelaide Norvell of Milford, Conn., and Katreen Korte of Falls Church, Va.; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Henry, George and Bernard Korte, and her sister, Elizabeth Wurtz. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today, April 5, at Vogler & Sons on Reynolda Road. A funeral Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, by Father Thomas Kessler at Saint Leo the Great Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family wishes to express their love and deep appreciation to Judy, Totsy, Sherry and Joann for the devoted and loving care given to Mrs. Fulton.
Hairston, Lillie Belle
Mrs. Lillie Belle Hairston, 81, of Springwood Nursing Home of Winston-Salem and formerly of 1400 Gholson Ave. in Winston-Salem passed away Friday, April 2, 2004, at Springwood Nursing Home. She was born April 8, 1922, in Forsyth County to the late Rev. Samuel B. Reid and Cora Firms. She resided her entire life in Winston-Salem. She worked at Bocock Stroud, Inc. before retiring. She was a member of Second Calvary Baptist Church for over 55 years and served on various boards and committees within the church. She also was a member of the senior choir. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Hairston Sr., who went home Oct. 14, 2003; four sisters, Cora McKeever, Sarah Reid, Thelma Goodman and Almedia Reid; and a brother, Samuel Reid. Lillie Belle Hairston is survived by two sons, Harvey Hairston Jr. and wife Sandra of Little Rock, Ark., and Kelvin Reid and wife Kim of Knoxville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, David Hairston of Charlotte, N.C., Michael Hairston of Little Rock, Ark., and Ashley and Jordan Reid, both of Knoxville, Tenn.; two brothers-in-law, Walter Albert Hairston and wife, Jean of Phoenix, Md., and Earnest Goodman of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Ms. Arthur Mae Jones of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces and nephews, including three special nieces who dedicated their love and time over the past two years, Carol L. McDowell, Barbara Debnam and Veronica Goodman. A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, at Second Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Donald Stowe officiating. Interment will be in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, at the church. Mrs. Lebertha S. Harris, 75, of 5022 Longbrook Circle passed on Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Lebertha was the daughter of the late Charlotte Mae and Eddie Brodgen. She was born March 3, 1929, in Wadesboro, N.C. She attended public school and was of the Baptist faith. She leaves to mourn a daughter, Deanna Sturdivant; a grandson, Rodney Sturdivant; a great-granddaughter, Quenshanna Collins; a great-great-granddaughter, Makhala Collins; two great-great-grandsons, Reshard Melton and Phillip Brockman; three aunts; and a host of relatives and friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, at Beasley's Chapel. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
Hutchens, Blain Silas
Mr. Blain Silas Hutchens, 87, of 2036 Pembrooke Forest Drive left this world to be with his Lord and savior Jesus Christ on April 3, 2004, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Hutchens was born June 28, 1916, in Yadkinville to Nick and Turnie Hutchens. He was a deacon and member of the Meadowview Baptist Church, where he faithfully served his Lord. He served in the Air Force during World War II and was a loving father and husband and a friend to all. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alice Ayers Hutchens; two sons, Larry Blain Hutchens of Kernersville and Robert Lee Hutchens and wife Robin Hutchens of Lewisville; a daughter, Shirley Hutchens Kern and husband Max Kern of Summerfield; four grandchildren, Hal Max Kern III and Laura Kern of Summerfield and Bethany Hutchens and Hannah Hutchens of Lewisville; three sisters, Hazel Doub of Winston-Salem and Harriet Lackey and Frances Allred, both of Yadkinville; and a brother, Paul Hutchens of Yadkinville. A funeral service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with his son Pastor Robert Hutchens officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, at the funeral home. Jager, Eileen Grace Walters
Eileen Grace Walters Jager, recently of Winston-Salem and West Palm Beach, Fla., and formerly of Howard Beach, N.Y., died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Hospice and Palliative CareCenter in Winston-Salem. She was 78. Born in Queens, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Jessie Scardaville Rosenfeld. Mrs. Jager had a long and illustrious business career, starting in the American Embassy in Paris. She worked for industry giants Fieldcrest and Random House, and lastly worked for Gralla Publications in New York City, retiring in 1989 as personnel director, whereupon she relocated to West Palm Beach, Fla., to care for her daughter, Suzanne, in a nursing and rehabilitation center. Mrs. Jager is survived by her children, Alexander Jager and his wife, Annamarie, of Winston-Salem and her daughter, Suzanne, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; her grandchildren, Karyn Bolland, Samuel Schwartz and Jason Schwartz; and her great-grandchildren, Ian, Andrew and Evan Bolland and Brianna Marie Schwartz and Aaron Louis Schwartz. Also surviving are her beloved aunt, Eleanor Koster; her uncle, Charles Scardaville; and her closest friends, Delores Dominguez and Paula Atkins, who will continue to tell her story. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, April 5, at First Baptist Church, 501 W. 5th Street in Winston-Salem. The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff and residents at Homestead Hills Assisted Living Facility for their kindness and love shown to Mrs. Jager throughout her stay, to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter's behind-the-scenes angels, and to the Kate B. ADVANCE - Mrs. Linda Neise LaBruzzo, 46, of Advance died Friday, April 2, 2004. She was born Aug. 2, 1957, in St. Louis, Mo., to John R. and Betty Hutchison Neise. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and a teacher at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School, where she was very active. She was preceded in death by her father, John R. Neise; and her father-in-law, Joseph LaBruzzo. Surviving are her husband, Vito LaBruzzo; two daughters, Kaitlin LaBruzzo and Mackenzie LaBruzzo; and a son, Vito Michael LaBruzzo, all of the home; her mother, Betty Theiss and husband, John, of St. Louis, Mo.; four sisters, Robyn Crance and husband, Ralph, Ann Frey and husband, Russell, and Jean Theiss, all of St. Louis, Mo., and Patty Theiss of Seattle, Wash.; five brothers, Michael Neise of Omaha, Neb., John Theiss and wife, Barbara, of Austin, Texas, Jim Theiss and wife, Laurie, of Bernardsville, N.J., Joe Theiss and wife, Joyce, of St. Louis, Mo., and Steven Theiss and wife, Kim, of Chicago, Ill.; paternal grandmother, Evelyn Neise of St. Louis, Mo.; her mother-in-law, Tony LaBruzzo, of Kansas City, Mo.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
