List, Thirza Ora Howard
Mrs. Thirza Ora Howard List, 92, widow of William List, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at Alterra Clare Bridge of Winston-Salem. Mrs. List was born Dec. 31, 1911, in Mocksville to Dewitt Clinton and Cora Bell Rouse Howard. She lived most of her life in Winston-Salem, working as a doctor's assistant at N.C. Baptist Hospital. She is survived by several loving family members. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, at Rowan Memorial Park Cemetery in Salisbury. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Lowery, Alma Mae Mosley
Mrs. Alma Mae Mosley Lowery, 80, went home to be with her Lord Saturday, April 3, 2004. She was born Feb. 9, 1924, in Forsyth County to the late Henry Edward and Maude Elizabeth Mosley. Mrs. Lowery was a member of Grace Baptist Temple, where she attended as long as her health permitted. Preceding her in death were her husband, Raymond Lowery; four brothers, Harold, Bill, Ernie and Lindy Mosley; and a sister, Myrt Motsinger. Mrs. Lowery is survived by a son, Roger Wayne Blalock Sr., and a grandson, Roger Wayne Blalock Jr., both of Winston-Salem; two great-grandsons, Roger Wayne Blalock III and Michael Raymond Blalock; seven nieces and nephews; two great-nieces and great-nephews; and a very special friend, Gay Wiggins. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, at Woodland Cemetery with Pastor Ed Sears officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, April 5, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, and at other times the family will be at 1543 Friedberg Church Road. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Temple, 3350 Peters Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.
Norton Sr., John Norman
MOCKSVILLE - Mr. John Norman Norton Sr., 75, of Random Road died early Sunday morning, April 4, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Norton was born Jan. 24, 1929, in Marion, N.C., to the late Jim and Claudia Ellis Norton. He was a retired principal of Davie County High School and a former principal of Boyden High School in Salisbury. He was a graduate of High Point College (class of 1949) and later pursued graduate studies at Appalachian State Teachers College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His first tenure as Davie County High School principal began in 1964. Several years later, he moved back to Broughton High School in Raleigh and returned to Davie County High School in 1971. His favorite pastimes were playing golf and coaching high school and college sports. He was an avid scratch golfer, a member of Statesville Country Club, and a recipient of many golfing awards and trophies. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Marie Sodolski Norton, in 1997; a sister, Mary Hollifield; and a brother, Dr. Bob Norton. Surviving are his daughter and her husband, Linda and Walter Matthews of Charlotte; his son and his wife, John N. Norton Jr. and Carol of Wilmington, N.C.; five grandchildren, Christopher John Matthews, John N. Norton III, Bradley Alan Norton, Jennifer Cheryl Matthews and Kelly Ann Norton; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances and husband, Norman Painter, of Winston-Salem; a brother Jack Norton and wife, Barrie, of Americus, Ga.; and his faithful companion, his dog, Tyler. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today, April 5, in Rose Cemetery with Dr. Bob Landry and Mr. Bill Campbell officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives at the home immediately following the service. They request that memorials be considered for Cancer Services, 622 N. Main St., Mocksville, NC 27028. Tuttle, Myrtle Mae
KING - Myrtle Mae Tuttle closed up her sewing machine on the evening of Thursday, April 1, 2004, for greater interior decorating in God's kingdom. Myrtle was an incredible seamstress and a very talented interior decorator. She loved creating beautiful pieces with fabric. Myrtle was also very active and involved in the many activities of her church and loved her participation in the Stokes County Home Demonstration Club, of which she was president for two years. During the course of her participation, she made many contributions to the success of the club's work in Stokes County. Myrtle grew up and spent her life in the Capella community of Stokes County and was very instrumental in the development of Mount Olive Community Center. Myrtle also always found time to be supportive and involved in many activities of her children and grandchildren, including 4-H Club, piano lessons and recitals and Little League baseball. She taught her children and grandchildren the secrets of the many crafts she had mastered and broadened their culinary knowledge with her expertise in true Southern cooking. Myrtle was born July 8, 1917, to Harden Hill "Doc" Tuttle and Flossie Tuttle of King. Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband of more than 70 years, William Porter Tuttle; and her beloved son, Harold Dean Tuttle. Myrtle was very proud of her family and leaves behind a host of family members who will cherish her many contributions to their lives and the wonderful memory of having been touched by her. Surviving are a son, Billy Eugene Tuttle and wife, Deborah, of Tucson, Ariz.; two daughters, Daphne (Pat) McAlister of Winston-Salem and Rose Ann Weaver and husband, Jimmie, of Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter-in-law, Gail Tuttle, wife of Harold Dean, of King; and her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Randall Scott Tuttle and wife, Clair, of Winston-Salem who brought to her life Scott and Carson, LaDonna Dean Ellis of Eden who brought to her life Carson, Mark Tuttle of Winston-Salem, Todd Glenn Dunivant and wife, Anne, of Plymouth, Minn., who brought to her life Alec and Nicholas, Brad Cale Dunivant and wife, Patty, of Walkertown who brought to her life Olivia and Katie, and Jimmy Guy Weaver of Winston-Salem. To celebrate Myrtle's life and her contribution to the Capella community, a service will be conducted in her honor at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Capella Church of Christ. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, April 5, at Slate Funeral Home in King. Vanhoy, Floy Anthony
HAMPTONVILLE - Floy Anthony Vanhoy, 89, of Hamptonville passed away Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Mrs Vanhoy was born Jan. 11, 1915, in Yadkin County to the late Joe and Mamie Cranfill Anthony. She was retired from Bates Nitewear and was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. Mrs. Vanhoy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy Gail Vanhoy; her sister, Addie Anthony; and a brother, James Ray Anthony. Surviving are two daughters, Wanda V. Macemore of Jonesville and Janice (Steve) Wagoner of Hamptonville; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce Anthony and Lois Anthony, both of Hamptonville; and a brother, Hurley (Mallie) Anthony, of Harmony. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, at Mountain View Baptist Church. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. at the church following the visitation by the Rev. Tim Tucker. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville is serving the Vanhoy family.
