HEDGEPATH
Mary Roberson ''Maggie'' Hedgepath, 85, a resident of 1050 Wendover Circle, Winston-Salem, and a former resident of 224 Cherry St., Henderson, died Tuesday at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the late Lemuel and Artelia Stanton Roberson. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at St. John's Episcopal Church by the Rev. John Simons. She is survived by her husband, Joseph E. Hedgepath of the home; a daughter, Susan M. White of Winston-Salem; a brother, the Rev. Lemuel Gibbons Roberson of Charleston, S.C.; a sister, Gilda Gray R. Leonard of Henderson; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. HESTER
Mr. James David Hester Sr., 68, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at his home. He was born Oct. 25, 1931, in Catawba County to the late Floyd Lee and Lela Hallman Hester. Mr. Hester was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. He was a retired master sergeant of the U.S. Air Force, with 21 years of service. He was later employed with Wilson Pest Control. He was preceded in death by a brother, Glenn Richard Hester, and a granddaughter, Lisa Marie Wiesener. Surviving are MaryLee Hester of Clemmons; a daughter, Cathy Wiesner and husband Steve of King; a daughter, Debbie James and husband Jeff of Pfafftown and their daughter, Courtney; a son, James David Hester Jr. and wife Eva of St. Petersburg, Fla., their son Samuel and daughter Sara; a son, Mike Hester and wife Tricia of Advance, their son, Michael and daughter Karen; a son, Greg Hester and wife Cassie of Winston-Salem, their daughter, Emily and son Kyle; and two sisters, Grace Sherrill and husband Sydney and Jeannine Miller and husband Harold all of Conover. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons, with Father Frank O'Rourke officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory, with military rites by the District 11 Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. LEWIS
Mrs. Shirley McLaurin Lewis of 2524 Reynolds Park Road quietly and serenely departed this life Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000. She was born to Henry and Pearline McLaurin on Feb. 20, 1947. She attended Carver Crest (L.A. Cook) and Paisley Senior High School. Mrs. Lewis was an employee of US Airways for 21 years. She was member of Solid Rock Missionary Baptist, where she was an ordained deaconess. She served as vice president of the deaconess board. She leaves to mourn her husband, Henry I. Lewis, Jr.; a daughter, Lisa (Kevin) Williams; a son, Henry (Joy) I. Lewis, III; six grandchildren, Devin, Kevin, Junior ( who preceded her in death), Briana and Kaylen Williams, Shana and Jermaine Lewis; sister Elizabeth (Ronald) Dendy; two nieces, Ronnetta (Kevin) Canty of Charlotte and Tonya Hairston and a host of relatives and friends. God saw the road was getting rough, the hills were hard to climb. He gently closed those loving eyes and whispered Peace Be Thine. The weary hours, the days of pain, the sleepless nights are past, the ever patient, worn out frame has found sweet rest at last. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church, where the Rev. Charles W. Leak will officiate. Burial will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. MALTBIE
Dorothy Paige Maltbie, 89, of 1244 Arbor Road, A-402 Corpening Triad Methodist Home, died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Maltbie was born in Ticonderoga, N.Y., on Feb. 27, 1911, the daughter of the late Clarence and Elise Foster. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church from 1946 to 1983 and was active in the Arbor Acres United Methodist Home Church community since 1983. She worked at the post office in Brant Lake, N.Y., before her marriage and was preceded in death by her husband, Armstrong Maltbie, in 1983. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at the Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Home in Winston-Salem. McGEE
Mrs. Alpha ''Pat'' Louise Lawson McGee, 74, of 186 Hoy Long Road, Winston-Salem (Midway community) passed away Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 14, 1926, in Forsyth County the daughter of the late E. Creed Lawson and Beatrice S. Lawson. She was the widow of Henry T. McGee Jr. and was also preceded in death by four brothers; a sister; a grandson; and a great-grandson. Mrs. McGee was retired from Hanes Hosiery Division and worked several years for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school's cafeterias. Surviving are a daughter, Brenda Lewis and husband Richard; a son, Stephen McGee and wife Sharon; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Settle and Earline Ketner; special nieces and nephews; and many faithful friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. MYERS
ELKIN -- Miss Della Jane Myers, 67, of 2569 Austin-Traphill Road died Thursday afternoon at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Joe Blackburn and Dr. Max Hill. Miss Myers was born in Wilkes County on Nov. 27, 1932, to John J. and Beulah Newman Myers. She was a registered nurse, having graduated from Davis Hospital School of Nursing in 1954. She was retired from Sara Lee Corp. and was a member of First Baptist Church in Jonesville. Surviving are numerous cousins and two godchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that any memorials be made to the Prayer Garden at First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 98, Jonesville, NC 28642. OLIVE
Dr. A. Thomas Olive, 69, formerly of Lewisville, died Sept. 14, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. A graduate of Mars Hill College and Wake Forest University, he was awarded a master's and doctorate degrees in entomology from N.C. State University. Dr. Olive taught at Wake Forest University for 28 years. Survivors include Betty Olive of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Cecilie Olive Breese and husband Steve of Cary; a son, Dana Olive of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Becky and Jenny Breese of Cary; a sister-in-law, Frances Olive of Charlotte; a brother-in-law, John Turner Jr. and wife Bonnie of Winston-Salem; and four nieces. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Unity Moravian Church in Lewisville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the church. OPDYKE
GREENSBORO -- Doris Nixon Opdyke, 82, of 1208 New Garden Road died Sept. 7, 2000, at her residence. A celebration of life service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at the Sedgefield Presbyterian Church, 4216 Wayne Road, Greensboro, with a musical tribute beginning at 2:30. Doris will be remembered for a life of faithfulness to her family, church and community. Her husband, children and grandchildren were blessed to have her warm and caring ways that became a source of strength and encouragement. She was an elder, a leader in the Presbyterian Women's Organization, worship commission and children's choir. Doris was a faithful presence in church choirs for more than 60 years. She gave many years of service to her community by serving as a volunteer for the American Red Cross and delivering meals for the United Services for Older Adults Mobile Meals Program. To those who knew her, Doris truly fulfilled her call to be God's faithful servant wherever she was needed. Survivors include her husband, William T. Opdyke; daughters Susan Opdyke of Newton, Mass., and Jane McMasters of San Diego; sons Richard Opdyke of Charlotte and Robert Opdyke of Greensboro; sister Beatrice Hand of Denville, N.J.; and six grandchildren. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. YADKINVILLE -- Mazie Elizabeth Hayes Reavis, 73, passed away Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Aug. 21, 1927, in Davidson County to the late Harvey and Lala Watson Hayes. Mrs. Reavis was a homemaker and a member of South Oak Ridge Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip W. Reavis, and a brother, Jesse Lee Hayes. Surviving are her daughter, Mary Kathryn Reavis of Yadkin Nursing Center, Yadkinville; a sister, Kathleen (Nelson) Hutchens of Mocksville; and several nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Gentry Family Chapel, conducted by Dr. Phil Beavers. Burial will follow in the South Oak Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery. SHELTON
MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. John Hugh Shelton, 75, of Howell Road passed away Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Shelton was born Nov. 15, 1924, in Davie County to the late John D. and Ila Mae Sprinkle Shelton. He is survived by two daughters, Christine (Wayne) Dobbins and Janice Smith of Yadkinville; a sister, Cornelia (Batry) Smith of Mocksville; and a brother, Tommy Shelton of Danville, Va. Also surviving are five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Earlene Sapp of Pfafftown. Mr. Shelton was a member of Courtney Baptist Church, was a retired farmer and was retired from Advance Security as a guard at the Inderrsol-Rand Co. in Mocksville. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. His funeral service will follow at 8 p.m. in the Gentry Family Chapel, conducted by the Rev. John Brown, the Rev. David Maynard and the Rev. Curtis Gibson.
