Vestal, Pearl Fletcher
Mrs. Pearl Fletcher Vestal, 101, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Willow Brook Nursing Center in Yadkinville. Mrs. Vestal was born Jan. 27, 1903, in Yadkin County to Calvin T. and Mary Katherine Brown Fletcher. She lived most of her life in Forsyth County and was retired from P.H. Hanes Knitting Co. She was a member of Forsyth Friends Meeting. Mrs. Vestal was preceded in death by her first husband, George Merritt; and her second husband, Herman Vestal. In addition, she was predeceased by two sisters, Carrie Thomas and Eulala Matthews; six half-brothers, T.S. Hobson, Omer Hobson, Vance Hobson, John Fletcher, Wesley Fletcher and Clyde Fletcher; and three half-sisters, Jennie Caudle, Bessie Caudle and Fannie Dinkins. She is survived by three nieces, Janie Parks, Frances Miller and Dot Adams; a stepdaughter, Reva Rothrock; and other family members. A funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. today, April 5, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, with the Rev. Myron Leonhard officiating. The family will receive friends until 9 p.m. following the service. A graveside service will be held at noon Tuesday, April 6, at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Vogler, Casper Lee
Surrounded by his family, Casper Lee Vogler, 89, of Winston-Salem passed away Saturday, April 3, 2004, after an extended illness. He was born March 14, 1915, in Forsyth County to Leslie Leroy and Sarah Alice Weavil Vogler. He retired from Hanes Hosiery after more than 47 years of service. His special interests were woodworking, fishing and spending time with his family. He was a former member of Sprague Street Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the board of deacons, treasurer and custodian and was also instrumental in the building programs. At the time of his death, he was a member of Waughtown Baptist Church, where he served as deacon. He served in World War II and received a Bronze Star, a Good Conduct Medal, a Purple Heart, a Victory Medal, a Combat Infantryman Badge and an MM30 Cal Rifle. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Viola Crotts Vogler; his brothers, Garland, Cliff, Brooklyn, Hobert and Holland; and his sister, Doris M. Vogler. Surviving are a son, C.L. (Thelma) Vogler Jr. of Lexington; his daughters, Patricia (C.H.) Ellis of Kernersville and Linda (Don) Nichols of Winston-Salem; his grandsons, Mike (Tammy) Vogler, the Rev. Jeff (Jerri) Vogler, Larry (Barbara) Ellis, Ricky (Allison) Ellis, Eric (Tracy) Nichols and Jonathan Nichols; his granddaughter, Lorie Perusse; his great-grandsons, Bradley Ellis, Zack Vogler, Matthew Ellis, Alex Vogler, Cam Vogler, Andy Vogler, Ricky Ellis and Jacob Perusse; his stepgreat-grandson, Jason (Mary) Crews; his stepgreat-granddaughter, Kristi (Scott) Dorton; his brother, James (Delilah) Vogler; his sisters, Lois Walker and Hazel Vogler; his sisters-in-law, Phoebe Vogler, Clarice Vogler, Mildred (Howard) Barnwell, Edna Crotts and Margaret Crotts; and his special friend, Hazel Michael. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today, April 5, at Vogler's Main Street. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, at Waughtown Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe McWethy, the Rev. Jeff Vogler and the Rev. Todd Doolittle officiating. Interment will be at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with military rites by District 11 Memorial Honor Guard. Walker, Annie Mae
Mrs. Annie Mae Walker, 53, of 718 W. Devonshire St. passed on Friday, April 2, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center after a long illness. She was born on June 15, 1950, in Oswego, S.C., to the late Geneva Thompson and the late James Vaughn. As a child and young adult, she attended Clark United Methodist Church in Oswego and later was a member of Salem Baptist Church in Sumter, S.C. She was educated in the public schools and after graduating, she served her country in the Army. Most recently, she worked at the former Twin City Textiles and Roses Department Store. She is preceded in death by her husband, Elvin "Bobby" Walker; and a brother, Calvin (Evelena) Lucky. She is survived by two sons, Sean Christopher Walker of Winston-Salem and T. Kevin Walker of the home; two sisters, Francine Weeks of Wilmington, Del., and Elizabeth Carter of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, Michael Lucky of Lemoore, Calif.; a grandchild, Kris-Sean Walker of Greenville, S.C.; two beloved cousins, Isiazetta (Leonardo) Rajah of Sumter, S.C., and Priscilla Kinard of Darlington, S.C.; a close family friend, Abe Weeks of Wilmington, Del.; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. Beckerdite, Marvin F.
Mr. Marvin F. Beckerdite, 86, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born May 30, 1917, to Luther and Martha Beckerdite. Mr. Beckerdite was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Lillie Bedsaul; a granddaughter, Deana Childress LeVan; his parents; two sisters; and five brothers. He is survived by a daughter, Wilhelmenia Beckerdite Childress and husband Carlos of Winston-Salem; a son, William F. Beckerdite and wife Jean of Newport News, Va.; a grandson, Jason Kelly Childress of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Kimberly Blake Beckerdite of Newport News, Va.; and two great-grandchildren, Tiffany and Zachary LeVan and their father, Carl LeVan of Statesville. Mr. Beckerdite served in the U.S. Army during World War II, worked many years for Brownlee Construction Co. and retired from Cockerham Furniture Store. He was a longtime member of Hopewell Moravian Church. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. There will be no formal service or visitation. Berry, Newton Anderson
Newton Anderson Berry, of 614 W. 26th St., passed late Saturday evening, Feb. 21, 2004, in the Forsyth Medical Center following a long illness. Mr. Berry was a native of Anderson, S.C., and born to the late Joseph and Fannie Thompson Berry. Mr. Berry had resided in Winston-Salem for over 50 years, was a retiree of Sarah Lee Knit Products and was owner/operator of Berry's Lawn Service. Spiritually he was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, Mr. Berry was preceded in death by his spouse, Beatrice Hall Berry. Left to cherish his memory are two devoted daughters, Carrie Ilene Berry of the home and Ann Tyler Berry of Charlotte; five sons, Waymond Newton (Janey) Berry, George Ralph (Faye) Berry, Matthew Alexander (Gladys) Berry, Roger Dale (Deidre) Berry and Nathaniel Dean (April) Berry, all of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Reginald, Roderick, Randall, Marshard W., Roger C. and Alise I. Berry; three great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Graveside rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, in the Evergreen Cemetery and there will be no public viewing. (Hooper)

Verna Mills Grier, widow of Dock Anderson Grier Jr., passed away Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at the Reynolds Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, 2935 N. Glenn Ave. with the Rev. James N. Brannon Sr. officiating. Julian, Ruth
Ruth Julian, 97, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. Ruth and her late husband, Ira, relocated from Boston to Winston-Salem in the early 1930s. Ruth was a leading figure in the development of Winston-Salem as a nationally known art center. She was an avid art collector, befriending established as well as new and upcoming North Carolina artists, such as Ben Owen and Robert Broderson. Over the years, she has donated major works from her collection to Ackland Art Museum, Guilford College and Elon University among others. As a testimonial to her commitment to the arts, she established the Ruth and Ira Julian Endowed Scholarship Fund at the N.C. School of the Arts. At age 95, Ruth was featured on the Art Council's Poster for their 2001 promotion drive. Ruth's life was a celebration of freethinking, creativity and laughter. In Ruth's words, "All living is learning, Baby, and don't you forget it." She is survived by her two sons and their wives, Peter and Susan Julian of Portland, Ore. and Jonathan and Marcia Julian of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Erin Lathrop of Winston-Salem and Benjamin Julian of Portland, Ore.; and twin great-granddaughters, Miah Kai and Kinsey Mae Julian of Portland, Ore. A service will be conducted noon Monday, Feb. 23, at Vogler and Sons Main St. Chapel by Rabbi Mark Strauss-Cohn. The family will be available to greet friends immediately following the service.

McEwen, Huston Jessie "Bip"
COURTNEY - Mr. Huston Jessie "Bip" McEwen, 68, of Courtney died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. Bip was born June 23, 1935, in Yadkin County to J.E. and Aldy Elizabeth Speer McEwen. He was retired owner of Bips Tire Service and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. Mr. McEwen was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy Hall McEwen; and two granddaughters, Yvonne Matthews and Jennifer Matthews. Surviving are four children, Jessie "Bud" (Selena) McEwen of Courtney, Sandre "Sis" Herrick of Davie County, Jerry "Gub" (Teresa) McEwen of Courtney and Jeanette "Tootie" (Ricky) Hutchens of Courtney; eight grandchildren, Kristy Coble, Jessica Propst, Dorothy Hauser, William Matthews, Hoss McEwen, Jay Bird McEwen, Freda Hutchens and Missy Hutchens; four great-grandchildren, Malachi Propst, Turner Hauser, Tucker Hauser and Taylor Hauser; two stepgrandchildren, Ashley and Mike Lawson; and four sisters, Peggy Smith, Nina Marlow, Betty Spillman and Sarah Richardson, all of Courtney. The McEwen family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, at Gentry Family Funeral Home in Yadkinville. The funeral service for Mr. McEwen will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Gentry Family Funeral Home Chapel in Yadkinville conducted by the Rev. Jessie McEwen.
