Nelums, Woodrow Linwood
Mr. Woodrow Linwood Nelums, formerly of 2705 Atwood Road, passed away on Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Nelums was born Oct. 26, 1927, in Newberry, S.C., to Alda R. Nelums and Solomon Nelums Sr. Following many years of service, he retired from Sargent Lock Co. of New Haven, Conn. Upon returning to Winston-Salem, he united with the Emmanuel Baptist Church, where he attended briefly prior to his illness. He served in the military and was a veteran of the United States Army. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Gladys Nelums. He leaves to cherish his memories his daughter, Barbara D. Blake of the home; three sons, Larry (Avis) Nelums, the Rev. Melvin (Betty) Nelums and Ronald (Rosetta) Dennis, all of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a special caregiver at the home, Terrance L. Nelums Jr.; a brother, Lee Thomas Nelums of Baltimore, Md.; two dedicated nieces, Alberta Jennings and Barbara Livingston of Connecticut; and many other loving relatives and friends. A funeral service will be held at noon Tuesday, Feb. 24, from the Emmanuel Baptist Church with Dr. John Mendez officiating. Interment will follow in the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Salisbury. The family visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the church. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home for the good care our father received while a resident and also for the kindness extended to the family. (Russell)
Renegar, James Howard
BOONVILLE - James Howard Renegar, 81, of Howard Avenue died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill with his daughters by his side. Born on Aug. 29, 1922, he was the son of the late Lonnie Marvin and Lula Moxley Renegar. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was retired from the Winston-Salem Journal Circulation Department and loved to farm. He had served as a Yadkin County magistrate. He was a member of North Oak Ridge Baptist Church. His wife, Billie Sue Norman Renegar, to whom he was marriage 60 years, preceded him in death on April 8, 2003. Mr. Renegar is survived by two daughters, Anne (Dave) Hunsucker and Charlotte (Mike) Hinson, all of Burlington; a sister, Thelma Norman of Boonville; four grandchildren, Jennifer R. (Chris) Callahan of Roanoke, Va., Josh Hinson, Mackenzie Ryals and Jake Hinson, all of Burlington; and three great-grandchildren, Christopher, Emily and Jack. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Harrell Renegar. The funeral service for Mr. Renegar will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at North Oak Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. John Altizer and the Rev. Sammy Shoaf officiating. Burial will be in the Boonville Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to the charity or church of the donor's choice. Mackie-Reavis Funeral Home in Yadkinville is serving the family of Mr. Renegar.
Sanders, Jih'may Ry'url Cucrera
Master Jih'may Ry'url Cucrera Sanders, of 1501 Lawrence Way, passed away on Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. Master Sanders was preceded in death by his grandfather, Hosea Cucrera. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving parents, James Sanders and Lola Shahvonne Cucrera; two brothers, Xzavier and Jah'may My'url Cucrera Sanders; a grandmother, Sheree Kittrell Cucrera; and three aunts, Eureka Sharan Kittrell, Senita Cucrera and Renee Cucrera. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Love Fellowship Deliverance Church with Bishop Jack Nelson officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Services.
Strupe, Iris Ruth Rominger
Mrs. Iris Ruth Rominger Strupe, wife of Dr. Floyd J. Strupe Jr., passed away Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, at The Oaks of Forsyth. She was born Sept. 20, 1925, in Winston-Salem to Jasper Monroe Rominger and Maude Covington Rominger. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Hester Rominger; and two great-grandchildren, twins, Austin and Savanah Thomas. Iris was a longstanding member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church and an active member of The Mabel Davis Sunday School Class as long as her health permitted. She attended John H. Hanes High School and was employed by Hanes Hosiery Co. for several years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved cooking and entertaining family and friends. She was an avid recipe collector. Iris and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, Aug. 23, 2002. She is survived by her husband of the home; two daughters, Cynthia (Dewey) Robertson of Kernersville and Linda (Bob) Cornish of Bermuda Run; two sons, Dr. Floyd J. (Jane) Strupe III of Winston-Salem and Kent T. Strupe of the home; five grandchildren, Jeff Thomas, Steven Robertson, U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Michael A. Strupe, U.S. Marine Corps Pfc. David L. Strupe and Mary Katherine Strupe; four great-grandchildren, Brittany and Zach Robertson and Jack and Max Thomas; a sister, Edith (Andy) Walker; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Cecil Cave and Dr. Gus Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, Feb. 23, at the funeral home. The family can be reached at the home of Dr. and Mrs. John G. Roland. Vaughn, Grace
MOUNT AIRY - Miss Grace Vaughn, 95, of 1000 Ridgecrest Lane passed away on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at Ridgecrest Retirement and Assisted Living Community in Mount Airy. Miss Vaughn was born on May 9, 1908, in Surry County, daughter of the late Charles Walter and Lucy Sutphin Vaughn. Miss Vaughn was executive director of the Surry County Chapter of the American Red Cross for 33 years. She was instrumental in beginning the Red Cross Blood Program in Mount Airy and Surry County and was also instrumental in beginning the Mount Airy Rescue Squad. Miss Vaughn was an active member of Central United Methodist Church as long as her health permitted. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Paul (Blanche) Callaway of Mount Airy, Mrs. Kenneth (Lola) Wagner of Morehead City and Mrs. Wallace (Cleo) Winkler of Mount Airy; and by a brother, Sam Vaughn of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Miss Vaughn was preceded in death by five sisters, Mrs. R.F. (Pearl) Gwyn, Mrs. N.D. (Gladys) White, Mrs. Flossie Callaway, Mrs. A.L. (Margie) Love and Mrs. J.C. (Maude) Hill; and by three brothers, Harvey Vaughn, Jim Vaughn and Renner Vaughn. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Central United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Terry Matthews with burial to follow in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 this evening, Feb. 23, at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. Watlington, Evelyn Shields
Evelyn Shields Watlington, 92, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, in Charlotte. She was born Sept. 5, 1911, the only daughter of the late Charles and Ida Willard Shields. Mrs. Watlington was a lifelong resident of Forsyth County before moving to the Carriage Club Retirement Community in Charlotte. She was a member of Konnoak Hills United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Watlington was the widow of Charles "Bernie" Watlington, who died in 1981. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Holland Shields, who died in 2003. Surviving are her two nieces, Sara Shields Sim--mons and husband Stacy Simmons of Charlotte and Gail Shields Bowden and husband Dr. Robert Bowden of Blacksburg, Va. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Saints' Delight Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Saints' Delight Church Road, off Linville Road in Kernersville. The Rev. Randy N. Sherrill will officiate. The family will receive friends before and after the service at the graveside. The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be made to the Cemetery Fund, Saints' Delight Primitive Baptist Church, c/o Terry Motsinger, 270 Motsinger Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27207. West, Dorothy Lucille
Miss Dorothy Lucille West, 81, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born July 17, 1922, to William Percy and Samantha Hanks West. She retired from the Office of the Clerk of Superior Court and was a member of Fairview Moravian Church, where she served in various capacities as long as her health permitted. Miss West was a member of the Weber Sunday school class, a member of the Circle #5 and active in the Women's fellowship. She was a church archivist and was a teacher to the senior high girls' Sunday school class. Miss West was the co-youth leader to the Senior High Youth group for many years, a member of the Living Branches Prayer Group and involved with the Wednesday night Fellowship Supper and Bible Study. As long as her health allowed her, she was an active member of the Senior Friends of Fairview Moravian Church and took many trips with them. Her love for Jesus Christ was exemplified in the way she lived her life. She was a Girl Scout leader beginning at the Scout hut on Liberty Street and continued with work with Scouts after the move to Silas Creek. Miss West was a member of the Breathing Plus Club and had a special love for animals. She leaves behind her two dogs, Mollie and Skipper. She is survived by two nephews and four nieces, Butch West (wife Betty) of Walkertown, Barry C. West (wife Carol) of Walnut Cove, Judy West Rumple of Winston-Salem, Linda West Myers (husband Steve) of Belews Creek, Vickie West Landingham (husband Douglas) of Ottway and Suzi West Needham (husband Thomas) of Pinnacle; eleven great-nieces and nephews; and thirteen great-great-nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Fairview Moravian Church with the Rev. Riddick Weber and the Rev. G. Thomas Shelton officiating. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
