Harmon, Fred Douglas
BOONVILLE - Mr. Fred Douglas Harmon, 63, of Golf Course Road passed away Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born June 9, 1940, in Surry County to the late Arthur and Ruth Park Harmon. Mr. Harmon worked several years and retired from Roadway Express. Afterwards, he devoted his time to his real passion, farming, which he loved dearly. He was an active member of Boonville United Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Fred was well-known as a generous and giving person. Anonymously Fred and his wife, Mickie, funded college educations to a young man and a young lady whom they knew needed assistance. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two infant sons, Robert Douglas Harmon and Jason Fred Harmon; and a brother, Troy Harmon. Surviving are his beloved wife of 39 years, Mickie Boring Harmon of the home; and a sister, Peggie Harmon of Clemmons. His funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Boonville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Marion Swann. He will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery in Elkin. The Harmon family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Feb. 3, at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. A special thank-you is given to his friends, Grady Ralph and Peggy Long and James and Ann Lawrence, for all their care and support; the Kate B. MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Jason Neil Jenkins, 24, of Mount Airy died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Salem Baptist Church. Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy is in charge of arrangements.
Johe, Peter Edwin
CHATHAM, N.J. - Peter Edwin Johe, 45, of Chatham died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at home following a three-year battle with colon cancer. Mr. Johe was born at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Newport, R.I., in 1958. He had lived in several states growing up and graduated from Jeb Stuart High School in Annandale, Va. Mr. Johe had lived in Bloomfield and Sea Girt prior to moving to Chatham seven years ago. He received a degree in civil engineering in 1981 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He had also received a master's degree in business administration from Farleigh Dickenson University. At the time of his death, Mr. Johe had worked for 17 years with the New York City Department of Transportation. He was the director of East River Bridges, where he oversaw the rehabilitation of the Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan Bridge, the Williamsburg Bridge and the Queensborough Bridge. Prior to that he had worked for the engineering firm of Edwards and Kelsey in Morristown. Peter had a passion for learning about and visiting massive structures, especially bridges, dams and buildings. He was a devoted husband and father and had a love of travel, golf, running and football. He had visited all of the 48 continental United States during his lifetime and had run two marathons. Mr. Johe held professional engineering licenses in both New York and New Jersey. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, a member of St. Patrick's Church and an active volunteer with the Chatham Recreation Department. Survivors include his beloved wife, Jennifer; a daughter, Meredith, 11; a son, Steven, 10; his father, Richard of Lewisville, N.C.; and his sister, Barbara Cardenas of San Jose, Calif. His mother, Martha Suzanne Johe, died previously. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at St. Patrick's Church, 85 Washington Ave., Chatham. Interment will be private. Friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Wm. A. Bradley & Son Funeral Home in Chatham. Lawrence, Henry Davis
DOBSON - Mr. Henry Davis Lawrence, 78, of 982 Prison Camp Road, Dobson, husband of Frances Hodges Lawrence, passed away Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at his home. Mr. Lawrence was born in Surry County on July 22, 1925, to the late Henry Clay Lawrence III and Mae Smith Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II. The awards and decorations he received while serving in several military campaigns were three Bronze Service stars, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and a Presidential Citation. He was a lifetime member of the Dobson VFW Post 7111 and owned and operated Mountain View Dairy for many years. He was a board member of the Surry County Farm Bureau Insurance Co. for 33 years, a Surry County Soil and Water District supervisor for 23 years and a member of New Hope Baptist Church. Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Frances Hodges Lawrence of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and Rickey Cornett of Dobson; a son-in-law and spouse, Jerry and Joanne Whitaker of Mount Airy; a special niece and spouse, Sandra and David Calhoun of Dobson; three grandsons, Sidney Davis Whitaker and Steven Wayne Whitaker, both of Mount Airy, and Bryson Lawrence Cornett of Dobson; a granddaughter, Jennifer Marie Calhoun of Dobson; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Lois Brown of Mount Airy, Juanita and James Thompson of Longwood, Fla., Dorothy and Ray Bowman of Dobson and Betty and Bobby Adams of Elkin; and three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Dorsey Lawrence of Lansing, Mich., Graham and Mondell Lawrence of Dobson and Gray and Opal Lawrence of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lawrence was preceded in death by a daughter, Lori Davis Whitaker; and two sisters, Flossie Jewell Snow and Mary Helen Outlaw. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at New Hope Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, with full military rites conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Feb. 3, at New Hope Baptist Church. Mayberry, Clarence Lee
WILKESBORO - Mr. Clarence Lee Mayberry, 78, of Old Highway 60, Wilkesboro, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mr. Mayberry was born in Sparks, Nev., on Jan. 7, 1926, to Claude Blaine and Charlotte Foster Mayberry. He was a member of Fishing Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Mayberry was retired from Dermox and also was a driver for Wilkes Transportation. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II. Mr. Mayberry is survived by his wife, Mildred Elizabeth "Betty" McLain Mayberry of the home; two sons, Lucky Mayberry of Wilkesboro and Michael Mayberry of Simpsonville, S.C.; five grandchildren, Matthew Mayberry of Wilkesboro, Kendra Klassen of Charlotte, Ryan Woodring of Winston-Salem and Leanne Mayberry and Jason Mayberry, both of Simpson, S.C. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at Fishing Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Edwards and the Rev. Dennis Love officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Mills, David F.
Mr. David F. Mills was born April 29, 1947, in Hendersonville to David F. and Mary Lou Mills Sr. With a smile he departed from his loved ones on Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at his home. While in Asheville, David worked at Cranston Manufacturing Co. for 31 years. He was a member of Fairmont Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the board of trustees, as treasurer of the senior choir and as a member of the senior choir. While in Winston-Salem, he worked for Dairy Fresh. David was preceded in death by his parents, David F. and Mary Lou Mills Sr.; and his previous wives, Roxanna Mills and Sharon Mills. He leaves not to mourn but to cherish his memories his loving and faithful wife, Elizabeth Mills; a daughter, Tonya (William) Baskin; a son, David F. Mills III; two grandchildren; a stepson, Bradley (Tina) Ceaser of the home; four brothers and a sister, Josheph (Vera) Sullivan of Pensacola, Fla., Mary E. (Eliston) Smith of Hendersonville, James Mills of Florida, Alfred Mills of Hendersonville and Robert Mills (Alinda) of Asheville; three stepsisters and a stepbrother of Hendersonville; a devoted sister-in-law, Aquilla Fulton of Winston-Salem; the beloved Slater family; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Zion Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Mrs. Mary Edith Hartman Scarlett Peake, widow of John F. Peake, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Dec. 25, 1916, in Forsyth County to the late Charles R. and Catherine Watkins Hartman. Mrs. Peake was retired from Forsyth Medical Center as an LPN and was a member of Forsyth Park Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Charles Elwood Hartman; two brothers, Howard Hartman and Warren G. Hartman; and two grandchildren, Timothy Wilson Saylor and Gregory Allen Saylor. She is survived by a daughter, Gwen Romaine Scarlett Saylor of Winston-Salem; a son, George Stanton Scarlett lV and wife, Lorraine, of Jacksonville, Fla.; five grandchildren, Glenn Raymond Saylor Jr. and wife, Wanda, of Roanoke Rapids, Scott Martin Saylor and wife, Fran, of Raleigh, Brian Lee Saylor and wife, Angie, of Mooresville, Darcy Stephanie Jeffers and husband, Danny, of Orlando, Fla., and Stanton Tyson Scarlett and wife, June, of Jacksonville, Fla.; nine great-grandchildren, Jonathan Will Saylor and Shannon Glenn Saylor, both of Roanoke Rapids, Adam William Saylor and Hartman Lee Saylor, both of Raleigh, Zachary T. Weir, Sarah A. Weir and Joshua Reith Saylor, all of Mooresville, Cooper Daniel Jeffers of Orlando, Fla., and William Goe Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Thelma Theresa Hartman Langley of Winston-Salem and Iris Elizabeth Hartman Thompson of Orlando, Fla.; and a half brother, Phare Thomas Long Jr. The funeral service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. MADISON - Patrick "Paddy" Henry Price Sr., 73, of 151 Patrick Drive died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at home. A lifelong resident of Rockingham County, Mr. Price was born Feb. 14, 1930, to the late Chase D. Price Sr. and Eva Mae Gunter Price. He was a retired auto-body mechanic. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Norfleet Price; and two sisters, Ruby Mae Price and Sayre P. Lazar. Survivors include his wife, Pamela Neal Price of the home; a son, Patrick H. Price Jr. of Madison; two daughters, Sue Price Dodson and husband, Thomas, of Madision and Wanda P. Edwards and husband, Price, of Mayodan; a stepdaughter, Dietra Deanhardt and husband, Clif, of Cary; a grandson, Patrick P. Edwards; two step grandchildren, Allison Deanhardt and Darian Deanhardt; a brother, Chase D. Price Jr. of Madison; two sisters, India P. Satterfield of Madison and Hazel P. Gann of Mayodan; and his first wife of 34 years, the mother of his two daughters, Betty Vanhoy Price. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Mount Hermon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harry Andrews, the Rev. Jack Knight and the Rev. Summer Knight officiating.
