Priddy, Winifred Spencer
LAWSONVILLE - Mrs. Winifred Spencer Priddy, 75, of Lawsonville passed away Sunday afternoon, Feb. 1, 2004, at her home. She was born in Stokes County on March 2, 1928, to the late Thomas and Stella Watkins Spencer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Narvie Priddy; a sister, Hallie Spencer; and two brothers, Clarence and Walter Spencer. She was a beautician and worked in the Patrick County, Va., and Stokes County school systems for more than 20 years. She was a member of Snow Hill Methodist Church in Lawsonville. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Amy and David Watkins of Lawsonville; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Kent and Rita Priddy of Boone, Rob Priddy of Lawsonville and Dana Priddy of Lawsonville; eight grandchildren, Laura Watkins, Melissa Mock, Wes Priddy, Landon Priddy, April Priddy, Derek Priddy, Caitlyn Priddy and Bryce Priddy; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lenora Smith of Lawsonville. There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart, Va., with Milfred Hudson and the Rev. Jesse Bledsoe officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 this evening, Feb. 3, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Cancer Patient Support System, Cancer Center of Wake Forest University, Medical School Boulevard, Winston-Salem, NC 27157-1082. The family would like to thank the nurses in the Oncology Unit on the 7th floor.
Riley, Letty Cleo Wilkins
GREENSBORO - Sunday night, Feb. 1, 2004, Letty Cleo Wilkins Riley went home to be with God. Born Feb. 6, 1917, in Johnston County to William Ransom and Ila Edna Wilkins, Mrs. Riley was 86 years old. Mrs. Riley loved all of nature, especially gardening and bird-watching. She enjoyed singing in the Greensboro Choral Society for more than 25 years. Active in church work for as long as her health allowed, Mrs. Riley was a charter member of Sedgefield Presbyterian Church. She served the church in many capacities, including Sunday school teacher and choir member. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Grey Riley Calvert, of Salisbury; two sons, Mark Stephen Riley and Rex Marshall Riley, both of Greensboro; three granddaughters, Anne Calvert Thorne and Elizabeth Wright Calvert of Salisbury and Brenna Sutherland Riley of Greensboro; two great-grandsons, Samuel Joseph Thorne and Tellor Munro Thorne of Salisbury; a daughter-in-law, Marlene B. Riley, of Pleasant Garden; and two sisters, Gladys W. Gilbert of Oceanside, Calif., and Grace W. Broadwell of Dunn. Mrs. Riley was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Eldon Riley, who died in 1975. Her oldest son, Herman Hayes Riley, died in 2003. Four of Mrs. Riley's siblings also preceded her in death. Mrs. Riley donated her body to Bowman Gray School of Medicine for scientific study. At her request, no memorial services will be held. The family would like to thank the staff of the South Hall of Moses Cone Extended Care for their professional and loving care of their mother. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Mary Ruth Beck Segers, 74, of Thomasville died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel in Thomasville.
Stewart, Daniel Lee
BELEWS CREEK - Mr. Daniel Lee Stewart, affectionately known by friends and family as "Johnny, " or "Thump, " went to be with his Lord on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004. He was born March 16, 1948, in Burnwell, W.Va., to Bert and Irene Stewart. He was a graduate of East Bank High School. He was a member of True Gospel Baptist Church. He was the owner and operator of Stewart Hauling and Grading. He was preceded in death by his parents. He has left behind the love of his life and devoted wife of 34 years, Wilma Kathryn Stewart of the home; two sons, Daniel Allen (Katrina) Stewart and Michael Brian Stewart, all of Belews Creek; a sister, Mae (Bud) Lawson of Winston-Salem; four brothers, Curtis (Rose) Stewart of East Bend, Donald (Dianne) Stewart of Advance, "Chick" (Becky) Stewart of Ohio and William Stewart of West Virginia; five cherished grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other dearly loved family members. There are not enough words to describe the impact that he made on so many lives, and he will be greatly missed. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be conducted today, Feb. 3, at True Gospel Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Manuel officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. (Burroughs)

Mrs. Margaret Cole Tate, 74, widow of Robert Lee Tate of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born June 19, 1929, in Haywood County to Pat S. and Louise Duckett Cole. She attended Western Carolina University. A member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, she retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. She is survived by a son, Robert Tate of Cincinnati, Ohio; a sister, Patricia C. (Bob) Owen of Clemmons; a brother, Kenneth (Edith) Cole of Clyde; a niece, Jennifer Cole; four nephews, G. Patrick (Hilda) Owen of Mount Dora, Fla., Michael C. (Elette) Owen of Mocksville and Barry and Kevin Cole; and two great-nieces, Ashline Owen of Wake Forest University and Madison Owen of Mocksville. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum by Dr. David Hughes. Memorials may be made to the TV Ministry of First Baptist Church, 501 W. Warren, Vallie Elizabeth Montgomery
WALNUT COVE - Ms. Vallie Elizabeth Montgomery Warren, 98, formerly of Mount Airy died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at Walnut Cove Healthcare Center. She was born in Stokes County to Joseph and Martha Tuttle Montgomery. She was employed by Renfro Mills and was a member of First Pentacostal Holiness Church of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ollie Warren; a sister; and eight brothers. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews and special friends, Lillie Mae Scism and Mike and Linda Hiatt. An 11 a.m. funeral service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Bowman Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 this evening, Feb. 3, at the funeral home. Bettis Sr., Harold Lee
GREENSBORO - Mr. Harold Lee Bettis Sr. died on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Moses Cone Extended Care Center. Harold was a native of Shelby. He taught social studies at Lindley Junior High School in Greensboro after graduating from Lenoir-Rhyne College. Following graduate studies at the University of Chicago in 1942, Harold became the manager of the Shelby Hospital, now Cleveland Memorial Regional Hospital, and then moved to the Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte as the assistant manager. When construction began on the Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in 1951, he became assistant director and then director in 1957 until his retirement in 1980. He served as a preceptor at Duke University School of Hospital Administration and helped establish the School of Nursing at UNCG and North Carolina A&T School of Nursing in conjunction with Cone Hospital. Harold was a life member of the North Carolina Hospital Association and a fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives. He enjoyed his membership in the Tarheel Seniors Golf Association, the Longview Seniors Golf Association and the Sedgefield Country Club, his interest in photography and his more than 50 years as a member of the Greensboro Civitan Club. An avid fisherman, he also enjoyed his association with the Painter's Lake Fishermen's Club. Mr. Bettis was an active member of the West Market Street United Methodist Church where he served on the administration board and as the president of the Men's Fellowship Class. He was predeceased by his parents, Hugh and Epsie Lowery Bettis; his stepmother, Mattie Beam Bettis of Shelby; his sister, Louise Bettis Long of Charlotte; his brothers, Alan Lowery Bettis of Lake Norman and Eugene Wriley Bettis of Greer, S.C. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Ford Bettis; his sons, Robert Edwin Bettis of N.Y., and Harold Lee Bettis Jr. and his wife, Linda Glenn of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Christopher Hutchins Bettis and his wife Emery of Hendersonville, William Sands Bettis and his wife Marie-Jose of Winston-Salem, Katherine Glenn McConnell and her husband John of Raleigh, Lindsay Paige Truluck of Richmond, Va.; and one great-grandchild, John Daniel McConell IV of Raleigh. Dr. David Melton and Dr. Craven Williams will conduct a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 12, at West Market Street United Methodist Church in Greensboro. The family will receive visitors today, Jan. 11, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Forbis & Dick Funeral Service in Greensboro. Brannock, Robert L.
Mr. Robert L. Brannock, 59, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center after a long illness. He was born Sept. 13, 1944, in Galax, Va., to Spurgeon L. and Ottolene Eastrigde Brnanock. He graduated from North Forsyth High School in 1966 and was in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971, serving in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970 as a Specialist 5th Class-American Division. In 2000 he retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 34 years of service. Preceding him in death were his father; a brother, Roger Brannock; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Samuel W. Knott and Mecie W. Knott. Mr. Brannock is survived by those who love him dearly; his wife, Sandra K. Brannock; three children, Amanda B. Beck and husband, Shane of Mount Airy, Robert L. Brannock Jr. and wife, Crystal of Winston-Salem and Samuel Bryan Brannock of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren who were Papa's pride and joy, Cristi Lynn Mabe, Dakota Kane Brannock and Autumn Nicole Beck, due in April 2004. Also surviving are his mother, Ottolene L. Brannock; two sisters, Janice Soloman and husband, John of Advance and Sue Robertson and husband, John of Mocksville; three brothers, James Brannock and wife, Jean of Clemmons, Ray Brannock and wife, Linda of Mocksville and Ricky Brannock and wife, Beverly of Walkertown; a brother-in-law, Samuel W. Knott Jr; a sister-in-law, Wanda Ste-phens and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 11, at Marshall Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John Holmes and the Rev. Milton Frazier. Entombment will follow at Gardens of Memory in Walkerton. The family would like to thank Dr. Sean M. Murphy and all the staff of Salem Chest specialists, all the nursing and respiratory staff of the 8th West Pulmonary Units of Forsyth Medical Center, as well as Mark with Food and Nutrition services, for all their love and kindness and exemplary care of our husband, father and grandfather.
