McGee, Louis Llewellyn
The Rev. Louis Llewellyn McGee, 78, passed away Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. The Rev. McGee, God's helper all the way, was born in Petersburg, Va., to Norma Llewellyn McGee and Louis Maitland McGee. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Lou McGee; his children, Mary Llewellyn McGee, Lesley Hope McGee (Tim) Harris and John Wilson (Ginger) McGee; and his beloved grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth McGee and Matthew Bryan McGee, who are his pride and joy. The Rev. McGee was a graduate of Petersburg High School and Fork Union Military School and earned his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Richmond. During this time he was mentored by his pastor, Dr. Theodore F. Adams, at the First Baptist Church in Richmond. He was the drummer and leader of the University of Richmond Swing Band. While serving as a student pastor in Warsaw, Va., he met his future bride, Mary Lou Wilson. The Rev. McGee was called into the ministry and ordained in 1949. He earned his bachelor of divinity degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary with graduate studies in the psychology of religion. During his four years as pastor of the Holland Baptist Church in Holland, Va., the church grew and a new educational building was constructed. Then as pastor of Glebe Baptist Church in Arlington, Va., the Rev. McGee served an especially loving congregation that grew rapidly. After attending a School of Pastoral Care training program at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, he decided to further his education and enrolled in the Institute of Religion at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. While working as a chaplain at Memorial Baptist Hospital in Houston, the Rev. McGee completed his studies at the institute and received his certification as a chaplain supervisor. During this time he also attended the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and earned his master of theology degree with a dissertation of "Pastoral Care of the Suicidal." This education in pastoral care, counseling and supervision was a rewarding accomplishment for the Rev. McGee and his family. He served as the first secretary for Hospital Chaplaincy at the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention for three years, traveling throughout the country. In 1991 he retired after 27 years as a director and chaplain supervisor in the Division of Clinical Pastoral Education, Dept. of Pastoral Care, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was a diplomate of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, a chaplain supervisor of the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), a fellow of the College of Chaplains and a certified marital and family therapist. He received numerous honors, including the Distinguished Service Award of the ACPE and the title "Chaplain Emeritus" from the College of Chaplains. His many publications included articles on suicide prevention, marriage and family counseling, stress management and conflict resolution. The Rev. McGee was a member of Knollwood Baptist Church. He enjoyed many sports, especially fishing, and was proud to be the first president of the Clemmons Cowboy Midget Football League. During his later years, he enjoyed playing drums with the Dixie Dawgs jazz band. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel in Advance. The family will receive friends after the service, followed by a private burial service at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the School of Pastoral Care, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Medical Center Boulevard, Winston-Salem, NC 27157-1099; Kate B. McMillian, Brenda Fay Austin
CANA, Va. - Mrs. Brenda Fay Austin McMillian, 56, of Cana, Va., died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, at Solid Rock Baptist Church. Moody Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

McMurray, Lucy Jones
KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Lucy Jones McMurray died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at her home. Mrs. McMurray was born in Sullivan County, Tenn., a daughter of John Alec and Laura Josephine Bright Jones. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Kernersville. Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Barbara and David Nelson of Kernersville; two sons and their wives, Stan and Karen McMurray of Johnson City, Tenn., and Derrick and Sue McMurray of Kingsport, Tenn.; six grandsons; four great-grandsons; a great-granddaughter; and a special, faithful canine companion, "Bo." A funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. today, Jan. 11, at Eastlawn Funeral Home in Kingsport, Tenn. Memorials may directed to the First Presbyterian Church, 611 Oakhurst St., Kernersville, NC 27284. Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home is assisting the McMurray family with local arrangements.

Moore, Caroline Fulton
Caroline Fulton Moore, 89, of Olivet Church Road, Winston-Sa-lem, and Piney Creek passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004. She was born May 23, 1914, to Lucius and Dai-sy Fulton of Clemmons. Mrs. Moore spent her early life and was educated in the Clemmons Moravian Com-munity. She was a former member of the Rural Hall Church of Christ and presently a member of Olivet Moravian Church. She was the retired secretary/receptionist for Smithdeal Realty of Winston-Salem and Dr. James N. Ziglar, DDS of Rural Hall. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Edward Moore; and her siblings, Frances Mock, Luna Luckenbach and Roy Fulton. She is survived by three children, Linda Thomson and husband Dale of Pfafftown, Ann Yoder and husband Jim of Greensboro and Edward F. Moore and wife Penny of Statesville; six grandchildren, Linette Hall and husband David of Pinnacle, Hal Thomson of Portland, Ore., Julie Evans of Winston-Sa-lem, John Evans and wife Andrea of Piney Creek, Catherine Kerr of Carrboro and Jessica Moore of Asheville; a great-grandson, Ben Hall of Pinnacle; and two sisters, Margaret Mock and Price Greer. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 11, at Olivet Moravian Church. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. in the church Fellowship Hall prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted; or memorials may be made to Olivet Moravian Church or Piney Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

Nelson, Arba Jackson
KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Arba Jackson Nelson, 90, a resident of Hwy. 66 S., Kernersville, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at the Cancer Center, High Point Regional Hospital, following a year of declining health. Mr. Nelson was born March 13, 1913, in Carroll County, Va., the son of Lerty Jordan and Alice Bowman Nelson. He was retired from Davis Furniture of High Point. He attended True Love Church of the Living God as long as his health permitted. On March 22, 1933, he marriage Laura Alice Fisher, who preceded him in death in 1994 after 61 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Flora, Susie, Annie and Imogene; and two brothers, Frank and Robert. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Pearl (Law-rence) Brown of Siloam, Mrs. Fern (Kent) Woods of Kernersville and Mrs. Brenda (Wayne) Penland of Winston-S-alem; a son, Lewis Nelson and his wife, Judy, of Kernersville; three sisters, Minnie Coulson of Ramseur, Ethel Moser of Pilot Mountain and Ruth Joyce of Westfield; two brothers, Rufus Nelson of Greensboro and Ray Nelson of Whitsett; four granddaughters, Deby Craft, Sandra Smith, Kimberly Garcia and Carla Atkins; four great-granddaughters, Carmen Garcia, Holly Atkins, Angelina Garcia and Delaney Atkins; and two great-grandsons, Austin Garcia and Kendall Smith. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, in the Davis Funerals & Cremations Chapel in High Point by the Rev. Raleigh Hayden Jr. and the Rev. Thomas Lackey. A graveside ser-vice will be at 3 p.m. in the Nelson Family Cemetery near Hills-ville, Va. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 11, at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.

Prestwood, Mary McNeill Staley
HUDSON - Mary McNeill Staley Prestwood, 79, of Hudson died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. today at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel in West Jefferson. Badger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Redburn, Calvin James
Calvin James Redburn, 83, passed away Jan. 7, 2004, surrounded by his family. Born on Nov. 5, 1920, in Independence, Kan., he was the son of the late Edward James Redburn and the late Clara Cooper Redburn. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bob Redburn, and his sister, Wan-da Benskin. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Raphael Green Redburn of Winston-Sa-lem; four children, Chris Red-burn and wife Nancy of Wilmington, Da-vid Redburn and wife Deb Hardy of Greenville, S.C., Jenny Mik-ell and husband Lawton of Raleigh, and Ray-nel Schmied-ing and husband David of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Mi-chael Redburn, Daniel Redburn, Jeffrey Mikell, Melissa Mikell and Jenna Schmieding; three brothers, Marvin Redburn and wife Barb, Bill Redburn and wife JoAnn and J.D. Redburn and wife JoAnn; four sisters Verna Hughes and husband Glen, Anna Mae Benskin and husband Bud, Millie Jacobs and husband Vic, and Evelyn Wat-kins; and a host of nieces and nephews. Capt. Redburn was a pilot with Piedmont Airlines for 27 years. He started his career as a co-pilot in 1953. In 1962, he became a captain. He retired in 1980 on his birthday. He attributed his accident-free flying career to having a guard-ian angel on his shoulder. Capt. Redburn served in the U.S. Navy as a Radioman 2nd Class on the USS Halford, a destroyer that operated all over the Pacific Ocean during World War II. He maintained a lifelong interest in ham radios, building several of his own radios and enjoying contacts around the world. Capt. Redburn was an avid golfer since 1953. He played at many golf courses around the country, winning numerous trophies. During his illness, he missed playing with his buddies at Wilshire Golf Course. The family would like to extend a special thank you to friends and family, Dr. Todd Smith, Dr. Richard Brodkin, Dr. Stephen Leighton, the staff, especially Ann Scott, R.N., and Simone Worthy of Hospice and Palliative CareCenter of Winston-Salem for their love, care, support and prayers. There will be a celebration of his life on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 4:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4055 Robinhood Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. Family and friends are encouraged to share a story about Cal and to stay for refreshments. A funeral Mass will be said at the St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church in Surprise, Ariz. Contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter of Winston-Salem, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

Shore, Jimmy Lee
THOMASVILLE - Mr. Jimmy Lee Shore, 61, of Thomasville died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel. J.C. Green & Sons of Thomasville is handling the arrangements.

Smith, George Marshall "Bud"
Mr. George "Bud" Marshall Smith, husband of Sandra M. Riley, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, after an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his father, Dennis H. Smith and his mother, Marie A. Silberzaln. Born in Baltimore, Md., George was a popular musician with a well-known band for many years. He continued to share his talent for the pleasure of others throughout his life. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Mark Smith; a daughter, Nancy (John) Bohlen; grandsons Derrie Wolfe and Jon Boh-len; a brother, Andrew (Jeannie) Silberzaln; and stepmother, Bess Smith, all of Baltimore, Md. His interment will be at Forsyth Memorial Park, officiated by the Rev. Henry May.
