Rapp, Frederick William
Mr. Frederick William Rapp, 93, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, after a long illness. He was predeceased by his wife, Marguerite Domine, in 1982. He is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Rapp of Waukesha, Wis.; two sons, Stephen Rapp and wife, Lisa, of Winston-Salem and Peter Rapp and wife, Barbara Wilkinson, of Portland, Ore.; two grandsons, Derek Rapp and Dustin Rapp of Winston-Salem; and a granddaughter, Liza Rapp of Portland, Ore. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family requests that memorials be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Rutan, Sue
Sue Rutan, 55, was called home to be with her Lord on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, while in Alabama with her family. Sue was the beloved wife of Vance Rutan and the Wonder Mother and dearest friend to her daughter, Leandra Rutan Livesay and her son Jonathon. She was loved by many and will be missed by her family and friends. A celebration of her life will be held 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Reynolda Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, there is a benevolence fund for the Rutan family handled through Reynolda Presbyterian Church, 2200 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106 or donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Romans 15:13.

Sale, Raymer Martin
Mr. Raymer Martin Sale, 88, a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 13, 1914, in Forsyth County to John T. and Rosa Simmons Sale. Mr. Sale was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. He was the owner and operator of Smith Dry Cleaners for 57 years and was a former president of the North Carolina Association of Launderers and Cleaners. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lyman, J.T. and Jack Sale; and a sister, Mary Alice Hawkins. Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Doris Linville Sale of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Dewilla Murphy and husband Rex of Winston-Salem, and Velna Pollock and husband Dan of Winston-Salem; two sons, Raymer Sale Jr. and wife Bonnie of Gwinnett County, Ga., and Al Sale and wife Susie of Charlotte; six grandchildren, Kim Mickey, Raymer Sale III, Ivy Babcock, Shane Sale, Courtni Sale and Todd Sale; and three great-grandchildren, Lauren and Hannah Mickey, and Raymer Sale IV. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Vogler & Sons Main St. Chapel by the Rev. Jack Yarbrough and the Rev. Roland Barnhardt. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Oct. 1, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 658, Winston-Salem, NC 27102 or the Methodist Children's Home, 1001 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

Tysinger, Everette Lee
THOMASVILLE - Mr. Everette Lee Tysinger, 88, of Thomasville, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday in J.C. Green & Sons Chapel in Thomasville.

Wood, James Gray "Bud"
Mr. James Gray "Bud" Wood, 75, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Winston-Salem on March 25, 1928, to the late Bernie and Ruth Alexander Wood. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was retired from AT&T with 37 years and 3 months service and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rhebba Hearn Wood; a son, the Rev. David B. Wood and wife, Claudette Harper Wood, of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Lee Ann Wood Chrisco and husband, Gerald Lee Chrisco, of Advance; five grandchildren, Joshua David Wood of Camp Hill, Pa., Jennifer Renee Wood of Winston-Salem, and Allison Danielle Chrisco, Ashley Nicole Chrisco and Aleah Michelle Chrisco, all of Advance; and two great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Byron Wood and Philip Michael Wood of Winston-Salem. The funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. today, Oct. 1, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. David B. Wood and the Rev. Tony Brown officiating. A military graveside service will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crisis Control Ministries, 200 E. 10th St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101-1512 or Winston-Salem Rescue Mission, 717 Oak St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101-1424.

Bowens, Willie Mae Thomas Saunders
Mrs. Willie Mae Thomas Saunders Bowens of 3450 Healy Drive, Apt. 5D departed this life Monday, July 28, 2003, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Sept. 30, 1923, to the late John Henry Baskin-Thomas and Roseanna Harper Thomas, the second child to this union. Mrs. Bowens was a member of the West Congregation of Jehovah Witness. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Lucille Thomas Massey Lyles. She leaves to mourn her homegoing two daughters, Mrs. Mary Thomas Scott (James) Peterson of Junction City, Kan., and Mrs. Ann (Norman) Caldwell of Winston-Salem; two sons, Dwight Leon (Merita) Saunders and George Neal (Carolyn Scippio) Saunders III, all of Winston-Salem; five brothers, James C. Thomas, Lloyd L. Thomas, Robert Baskin, all of Winston-Salem, William Thomas of Bronx, N.Y., and Clint (Ruth) Foster of Taylors, S.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Izora Glenn of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Jane A. Smith of Bronx, N.Y., and Mrs. Ilene LeFong of Atlanta, Ga.; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild; a sister-in-law, Magdalene S. Wright; a brother-in-law, Bravette Lyles Sr., both of Winston-Salem; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, aunts, friends, brothers and sisters in Christ. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at Hooper Funeral Home Chapel, with interment to follow at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service hour, from 1:30 to 2 p.m., at the funeral home. A special "Thank You" to the residents of Healy Towers, Forsyth Medical Center 9th Floor staff and the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. May God bless each of you. (Hooper)

Clinard Jr., Charles R. "Charlie"
Mr. Charles R. Clinard Jr. "Charlie, " 83, of Heritage Woods Retirement Home, Apt. 225, 3812 Forrestgate Drive, Winston-Salem, died July 29, 2003, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born March 4, 1920, in Winston-Salem, to Charles R. Clinard Sr. and Lestie Sink Clinard. Mr. Clinard was a member of Trinity Moravian Church and joined the church band at a young age. He played in the orchestra and sang in the choir and was a longtime member of the Salem Band. He contributed much of his musical talent in the church and played the piano for his Sunday school class. Mr. Clinard composed an opera as well as other musical compositions. He wrote a hymn, "Jesus Friend of Sinners" and wrote the music to Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar." He wrote one of the first books for "Accordion Instructions." A popular song that he composed, "It's Gray Skies Tonight" was arranged for Shirley Smith's Orchestra by B.C. Dunford. It was recorded and a copy sent to the Kay Kyser band. Kay Kyser attended the University of N.C. at Chapel Hill. Mr. Clinard had a weekly program playing the accordion on station WSJS for many years. He was active in many organizations. He was a member of the Twin City Kiwanis Club and an elder at Trinity Moravian Church. He graduated from Reynolds High School in the class of 1939, attended most reunions and was a member of the band and orchestra. He composed his class school song and was a member of several organizations in the school. Mr. Clinard graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1944 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in music. He sang in the University Glee Club and played the piano, trombone, accordion and other instruments. He was a member of the Phi Mu Alpha National Honorary Musical Fraternity and was vice president of the "Carolina Club." Mr. Clinard studied piano at Salem College for many years before entering college. After graduating from college he taught music for 45 years in Forsyth and Davidson counties and privately in his studio and Graylan. He taught piano, all instruments, Glee Clubs and directed Moravian bands and several church choirs. He played for Chapel at Heritage Woods and other events. Heritage Woods honored Mr. Clinard at a reception for all his former students. The Moravian Band played for it and asked him to direct a few chorales. He arranged an anthem for the Advent Moravian Church Band a few years ago, and they played it at Heritage Woods. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Jerry Lee Clinard. Surviving are his sister, Audra Jean Clinard Foil and husband W. M. Foil Jr. of "Old Salem"; a nephew, Mitch Foil (Tamara) of Winston-Salem; a nephew, Monte Foil and wife Carol and their children, Nicholas Graham Foil, and Bethany Anne Foil of Spartanburg, S.C.; and an aunt, Dallas Sink of Brookridge Retirement Home in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel from 7 to 9 this evening. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Patricia Garner and Dr. Truman Dunn officiating. Burial will follow at the "Clinard Plot" in Salem Cemetery. After the service there will be a reception at Heritage Woods in memory of Charlie. All are invited. Memorials may be made to Trinity Moravian Church, 220 East Sprague St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family wishes to thank Heritage Wood's Staff and Friends, the Wake Forsyth Family Physicians especially Dr. Frank Celestino, the eighth floor, Reynolds Tower, Baptist Hospital staff and nurses, as well as the Hospice Home for the excellent care given to Charlie. Charlie was an inspiration to all that knew him and is to be admired for his many accomplishments, in spite of his physical handicap since birth.

Duncan-Thomas, Bianca JaCole
The memory of angels lives a lifetime, and their presence is remembered forever.
Bianca JaCole Duncan-Thomas entered into this earthly realm July 3, 2003, and departed this realm July 29, 2003. She leaves to cherish her memory her parents, Chiquita Duncan and Kevin Thomas, both of Winston-Salem; maternal grandparents, Jacqueline Duncan of Winston-Salem and Chaviler Rogers of Oklahoma City, Okla.; paternal grandparents, Minister Cassandra Williams and Michael Thomas, both of Winston-Salem; maternal great-grandmother, Minister Cynthia "Sweetie Pie" Duncan of Winston-Salem; paternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Orpheus Michael and Mr. and Mrs. James Thomas, all of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at Piedmont Memorial Gardens, with Pastor Sheldon M. McCarter officiating. The family will receive friends at the home, 1800-C Geneva St., until the service. A special thanks to Hospice of Winston-Salem for the grace, care and support that was shown to us during this short period of illness. (Russell)
