York, Mary Elizabeth Alexander
MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Alexander York of West Pine Street passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy. Mrs. York was born Dec. 20, 1910, in Cabarrus County to Mary Dixie Oehler and Ralph Renwick Alexander. She grew up in Mount Ulla in Rowan County, attended Mitchell College in Statesville, and earned her teaching certification from Appalachian State University in Boone. In 1934, she marriage John Davis York of Mount Airy. As a young woman, Mrs. York was an elementary-school teacher, and she taught occasionally as a substitute after her children were born. A member of First Presbyterian Church of Mount Airy, she loved the beauty of the natural world, and throughout her life she was an avid reader. Predeceased by her husband, she is survived by three children, Mrs. Raymond A. (Elizabeth) Enstam of Dallas, Texas; John Alexander York of Mechanicsville, Va., and Joseph Neill York of West Melbourne, Fla.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at First Presbyterian Church, with services conducted by the Rev. Steve Lindsley. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Andrews, Margaret Blake
CARRBORO - Margaret Blake Andrews, 85, died Tuesday morning at UNC Hospitals. A native of Chatham County, she was a member of Hillsong Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Margaret (Cookie) Smith, of Carrboro; a son, Hamlin Andrews, of Carrboro; a brother, Bill Blake, of Carrboro; and five grandchildren, Margaret Todd Yaeger, Mark Lee Smith, Emily Pierce, Katie Smith and Corey Andrews. The funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday at Hillsong Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Mercer officiating. Burial will be at Westwood Cemetery in Carrboro. Visitations will be one hour prior to the service at the church and from 5 to 7 this evening at 207 Lorraine St., Carrboro. Walker Funeral Home in Chapel Hill will be serving the family.
Badger, James Alfred
JEFFERSON - Mr. James Alfred Badger, 81, died Tuesday morning, April 1, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte. Mr. Badger was born Feb. 23, 1922, in Jefferson to Roy R. and Bessie Hartsog Badger. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in the European Campaign. He was a successful businessman who entertained many business adventures during his career. He is best remembered as owner and manager of Badger Funeral Home, where he served Ashe and surrounding counties for 56 years. Mr. Badger was known for his kind and compassionate service offered to all people. He was an active member of the board of directors of Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. R.D. Williams, the hospital administrator, said: "Mr. Badger was a valued member of the Ashe Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees from 1988 to the present. His service on the board continued his family's tradition of support for this hospital. Mr. Badger's leadership and guidance will be missed." He was also a retired member of the board of directors of First Citizens Bank. Mr. Badger exemplified a great love for his native Ashe County, where his many contributions and influences were used to promote the county. Mr. Badger's special love for children afforded him the devotion of children of all ages. Ashe County's friend, James A. Badger, will long be remembered in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known him. The funeral service for Mr. Badger will conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Fletcher Baptist Church in Jefferson by the Rev. Jeff Vogler, the Rev. Bill Ballou and David VanHoy. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday and from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson with military rites. Mr. Badger is survived by his wife, Erma Hart Badger of the home; a son, Michael Badger of Jefferson; three daughters, Rebecca Houck of North Wilkesboro, Lois Miller and Jennifer Holman of Wilkesboro; a brother, Bill Badger of Jefferson; two sisters, Giona Badger Cook and Edith Badger Conklin, both of Jefferson; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Donald Gray Boger Sr., 67, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born July 23, 1935, in Forsyth County to John Duke and Lucille Grubbs Boger. Mr. Boger was a member of Pinedale Christian Church. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Jordan Boger; three children, Donald Gray Boger Jr. and wife Barbara, Keith Boger and wife Lisa and Elaine Young and husband Craig, all of Winston-Salem; his mother of Winston-Salem; two stepchildren, David R. Richardson and wife Sarah of Advance and Dawn R. Edworthy and husband Don of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren; and a brother, Bobby Boger and wife Elizabeth of Wallburg. Brady, Kenneth Leo
WILMINGTON - Mr. Kenneth Leo Brady, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at his residence. He was born March 29, 1915, in McDonald, Pa., the son of the late Charles and Emma Cook Brady, and was preceded in death by his wife, Lucile "Tag" Lancaster Brady. Mr. Brady was a charter member of Covenant Moravian Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps having served in World War II, and retired from Sears following 26 years as a serviceman. Surviving are his children, Penny Turner and husband David of Rockville, Md., Phillip M. Brady and wife Patty of Wilmington, Byron B. Brady of Raleigh and Patricia B. Staton and husband Steve of Wilmington; and three grandchildren, Phillip M. Brady Jr. of Wilmington, Katie Marie Brady of Chapel Hill and Stephanie M. Staton of Wilmington. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Covenant Moravian Church by the Rev. Jon Peterson. WESTFIELD - Mr. Thurman E. Brewer, 65, passed away March 31, 2003, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Aug. 22, 1937, in Winston-Salem to the late Sally Nicks Brewer and Emory J. Brewer. Mr. Brewer was a member of Danbury Baptist Church. He was a loving father and a hard working man who was devoted to his cats and dog. Mr. Brewer was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Jack and E.J. Brewer and a sister, Marion Pruitt. He is survived by his daughters, Theresa Whisenhunt and husband, Mike, of Lexington, Robin Hanna of Kernersville, Tammy Burroughs of Trinity and Kelly Brown of King; a grandson, Jamie; six granddaughters, Amanda, Tiffany, Ashley, Monica, Casey and Billie Kae; a great-grandson, Chase; three nieces; and two nephews. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. G. Thomas Shelton and the Rev. Bill Greenwood officiating. Brooks, Joshua Denard
Master Joshua Denard Brooks was born Jan. 5, 1995, to Pamela Collins Brooks. God called Josh from labor to reward Friday evening, March 28, 2003, at Brenner's Children Hospital. Josh was a first-grade student at Easton Elementary School. He gave his life to the Lord and became a member of Meadowview Baptist Church. Josh was a joy to all he met and touched the lives of many during his short stay here on earth. His unselfish heart kept him in constant prayer not just for his healing, but also for the healing of other sick children. Josh leaves precious loving memories in the hearts of his loving and devoted mother, Pamela Collins Brooks, of the home; his father, Joseph Brooks, of Winston-Salem; two brothers, John Gladney and Lil Jody Brooks; two sisters, Latasha Gladney and Chrisma Blackburn, both of Winston-Salem; two uncles, Roosevelt Collins Jr. of Memphis, Tenn., and Charles Gweyn of Winston-Salem; four aunts, Valerie Sanders of Atlanta, Ga., Maria Sanders of Gastonia and Monica Thompkins and Jamall Grice of Winston-Salem; his maternal grandparents, Roosevelt (Phyllis) Collins and Dianna (William) Oakes of Winston-Salem; his maternal great-grandparents, Nellie Collins and Myrtle Dervin, of Winston-Salem; extended family and loving friends Denise Smith of Lewisville, Melissa Barsz of Winston-Salem and Renata Brown of Greensboro; and a host of other family, friends and the staff of Brenner's Children Hospital. SPARTA - Mrs. Vivian Bryan Brown, 84, of 1042 Laurel Glen Church Road died Sunday evening, March 30, 2003, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She was the widow of Walter Brown. She is survived by five daughters and four sons-in-law, Regina and Ronald Parham of Clarksville, Tenn., Bernice and Donald Jacobs of Patterson, N.J., Joyce Brown of Washington, D.C., Venia and Goldie Price of New Carrollton, Md., and Annette and James Harris of North Wilkesboro; five sons and two daughters-in-law, Walter Jr. and Cheryl Brown of Bristol, Va., Herbert Brown of Sparta, Douglas and Vera Brown of Sparta, Steven Brown of North Wilkesboro and Alvin Brown of Sparta; two sisters, Edna Choate and Ophra Edwards, both of Sparta; a brother, Jeff Bryan, of Sparta; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday morning, April 3, 2003, at the Macedonia Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral service to lie in state.
