Meeks, Dr. Carl G.
BOONE - Dr. Carl G. Meeks, 82, of Boone, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Yadkin Nursing Care Center in Yadkinville. He was born Oct. 22, 1920, in Tarrytown, Ga., to the late Newton and Annie Hawkins Meeks. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and earned the rank of captain. Dr. Meeks received a bachelor's degree from East Tennessee State University; a master's degree from the University of Mississippi and his doctorate from Columbia Univ-ersity. He was a retired professor, having taught health and physical educa-tion at William & Mary College, Northeast Louisiana State College and Appalachian State University. He was a member of Boone United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, Gary Meeks and wife Sally and children, Elizabeth Meeks and Derrick Meeks, all of Boonville and David Meeks and wife Kim and children, John Thomas Sim, Caitlin Meeks and Ashley Meeks, all of Matthews; and a brother, James Ray Meeks of Oklahoma City, Okla. He was pre-ceded in death by his wife, Natalie Clark Meeks; two sisters; and a brother. A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday morning at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel in Boone with the Rev. Marion Swann officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Monte Vista Memorial Park in Johnson City, Tenn. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. GERMANTON - Mr. Jonas Charles Mefford, 63, of Apple Orchard Road died Friday, March 28, 2003. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday at Shining Light Baptist Church. Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall is in charge of arrangements.
Milhous, Leon Arthur
IRMO, S.C. - Mr. Leon Arthur Milhous, the husband of the late Elizabeth Anne Fendrick Jones Milhous, died March 19, 2003. Born in Denmark, S.C., he was the son of the late Arthur Leon Milhous and Ella Lou Eubanks Milhous. At an early age, he learned Morse code and began delivering telegrams on a bicycle and rose through Western Union with a career spanning over 45 years throughout South Carolina and North Carolina. He managed the Western Union office in Winston-Salem for a number of years. He retired first to Tavares, Fla., and later to Irmo. He was an outdoorsman, an avid gardener, hunter and fisherman. Mr. Milhous was a former member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem and First United Methodist Church in Tavares and a recent member of Union United Methodist Church. Surviving are sons Leon Arthur Milhous Jr. of Winston-Salem and Robert Edward Milhous of Columbia; a daughter, Patricia Anne Milhous Howell, of Advance; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral service was held March 21, 2003, at Union United Methodist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Union United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund.
Pettigrew, Mable Warren
Mrs. Mable Warren Pettigrew, "Babe", 82, of Winston-Salem (Old Town) died after an extended illness at Meadowbrook of Davie Nursing Home Facility Monday, March 31, 2003. She was born to the late Ernest and Mamie Lash Warren June 2, 1920, in Kernersville. Mrs. Pettigrew was a faithful, loyal and devoted member of St. Paul United Methodist Church of Kernersville. Preceding her in death were her husband, Robert S. Pettigrew; four brothers, Wainard, Winifred, Garland and Alton Warren; three sisters, Evelyn Johnson, Lavolia Vails and Katherine Jones. Survivors include a son, Billy E. Jones (Lillie) of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Gwendolyn J. Bell of Durham; four grandchildren, L'Anita Gore (Rondie) of Winston-Salem, William Bell II (Donna) of Charlotte, Sharon Jones of Winston-Salem and Tiffany Bell of Charlotte; three great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Lucille C. Warren of Kernersville, Mary P. Warren of Oak Ridge and Connie Warren of Indianapolis, Ind.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Kernersville. Interment will follow at the East Lawn Gardens Cemetery in Kernersville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 this evening, April 2, 2003, Hooper Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the St. Paul United Methodist Church Building Fund. YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Lorene Davis Simmons, 83, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Willowbrooke Healthcare Center. She was born in Yadkin County Aug. 17, 1919, to George and Ethel Martin Davis. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. She was retired from Western Electric in Winston-Salem. Surviving are a daughter, Vickie Simmons (Mike) Shore of Yadkinville; two grandchildren, Shannon (David) King, and Sacha Shore, both of Yadkinville; and two sisters, Grace Jayne of Roanoke, Va. and Gladys Robertson of Winston-Salem.The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003, at the Friendship Baptist Church by Eddie Tyson and the Rev. Grady Tutterow. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. to lie in state. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Adams, A. Eugene
JONESVILLE - Mr. A. Eugene Adams, 76, a loving husband, father and grandfather, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Adams was born March 25, 1926, in Wilkes County to James Grant and Leona Shore Adams. He was a World War II Navy veteran and was retired from Chatham Manufacturing. Mr. Adams was a member of Swan Creek Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He loved to garden and was a very proud grandfather. Mr. Adams was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gwyn Adams; and three sisters, Nancy Gray, Mary Brown and Ina Louise Adams. Surviving are his wife, Mozelle Draughn Adams of the home; a son, D. Grant Adams and wife Sandra of Boonville; two grandchildren, Heather and Lauren Adams; and a sister, Ethel Spencer of Jonesville. The funeral service for Mr. Adams will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at Swan Creek Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tim White. Mr. Adams will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, Nov. 2, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville. Cornelius, D.C.
EAST BEND - Our wonderful friend D.C. Cornelius passed away Wednesday Oct. 30, 2002, at his home on Old U.S. 421 Highway. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., and had a machine shop at his home. He served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Cornelius was born Feb. 28, 1937, to Wade and Doris Taylor Cornelius, who preceded him in death. He was a faithful member of Forbush Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and taught the children's Sunday-school class for 20 years. He is survived by his wife, Faye Stokes Cornelius; three daughters, Donna (Marty) Myers of East Bend, Lynne (Bill) Harris of Yadkinville and Beth (Kent) Doub of East Bend; also his beloved grandchildren, Justin and Brittany Myers, Lauren and Nathan Harris, and Mason and Kala Doub. He is also survived by three brothers, Wade Leroy (Mickey) Cornelius, Allen (Peggy) Cornelius and Kenny (Veona) Cornelius; his stepmother, Charlie Mae Cornelius; two stepsisters, Betty McCormick and Linda (Steve) Baity; two stepbrothers, Albert (Audrey) Brown and Steve (Juanita) Brown; a sister-in-law, Gladys Lowe of Advance; and brothers-in-law Odell (Minnie) Stokes of Graham, and Harold (Dot) Stokes and Joe (Cynthia) Stokes of Hamptonville. His funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. today, Nov. 2, 2002, at Forbush Baptist Church by the Rev. Warren Kerr and the Rev. Charles Jones. He will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family wishes to thank all the many friends and family for their many acts of kindness; also the Forbush Volunteer Fire Department, first responders, and Emergency Medical Services. CLEMMONS - Mrs. Maria Hogan, 65, passed away Oct. 31, 2002, at 11:30 p.m. at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Frank Hogan; four children, Linda Duncum of Alpine, Texas, Jim Hogan of High Point, Tim Hogan of Louisburg and Karen Kent of Durham; a dear sister, Delores Buccelly of Shelton, Conn.; and six grandchildren.
