BERRONG
NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mr. J.D. Berrong, Sr., age 78, of Wood Street, North Wilkesboro, died Saturday at his home. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 15 at 11:00 a.m. at Mountlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, with the Rev. Tim Pruitt and the Rev. John Allen Foster officiating. Entombment will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Mr. Berrong was born September 25, 1921 in Cherokee County to Joseph Daniel and Cora Jane McDonald Berrong. He owned and operated J.D.'s Fire Extinguisher Service and was a member of Peace Haven Baptist Church. Mr. Berrong served in the United States Army during WWII. He is survived by his wife, Dossie B. Lovette Berrong, of the home; one daughter, Barbara B. Nye, of Wilkesboro; one son, James Daniel Berrong, Jr., of North Wilkesboro; one sister, Hildred Lovette, of North Wilkesboro; one brother, Donald Berrong, of North Wilkesboro; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The family will be at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro on Sunday night from 7:00 until 8:30. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Wilkes County, P.O. BOWDEN
Mrs. Marcella Garner Bowden, of Winston-Salem, departed this life for her new life in Heaven on November 12, 1999. Mrs. Bowden died Friday afternoon at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Her family knew her as a beloved mother, a precious grandmother, a faithful daughter, a dear sister, and a special aunt. Everyone who knew her was acquainted with her kindly ways, her generous nature, and her humble faith. She was born in Davidson County to Conrad H. and Mary G. Garner. Mrs. Bowden was a member of Pine Primitive Baptist Church. She was retired from AT&T, Lexington Road. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.A. Bowden, Jr. Surviving are her son, Stephen G. Bowden and wife, Kandy; two grandchildren, Angela Bowden and Chris Bowden; her mother, Mrs. Mary Garner; her sister, Mrs. Georgia James; three brothers, Lester Garner, Robert A. Garner and wife, Annie, and C.H. Garner, Jr.; and sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Mrs. Frank) Whisenhunt and Nancy (Mrs. Earnest) Whitman, all of Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, where funeral services will also be held Monday, November 15 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. Paul Douglas Baker, 48, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, November 12, 1999 at High Point Regional Hospital in High Point. He was born May 31, 1951 in Halifax, Pa. to Carl Eugene and Betty Lou Bentz Baker. Mr. Baker served with the U.S. Army and was emloyed by The News Group. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Baker is lovingly survived by his wife, Linda Baker, of the home; 10 children, Paul Baker, Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Williamson, N.Y., Michelle Baker, of Sodus, N.Y., Elizabeth Baker, of Sodus, N.Y., Susanna Thou and husband, Steven Dale, of Asheboro, Sandra Baker, of Winston-Salem, Diana Baker, of Asheboro, and Robert Baker, Thomas Baker, Mindy Baker, and Katherine Baker, of the home; four grandchildren, Corey, Sheyanne, Ashley, and Austin Baker; and two sisters, Melinda Warfel, of Halifax, Pa. and Melanie Dickenson, of Liecester, N.Y. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, November 15 at 6:00 p.m. at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by Rev. J. Marion Rector. STATE ROAD -- Mrs. Maude Howard Loper Frech, 86, of 210 Dry Wall Road, died Friday, November 12, 1999 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. She was born December 24, 1912 in Indiana, Pa. to the late James and Sarah Howard. She was a retired supervisor for University State College in Pennsylvania. She moved from Indiana, Pa. to Elkin in 1978, and a was member of the Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Allan E. Loper, Sr.; her second husband, Clore Frech; and a son, Allan E. Loper, Jr. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Beulah C. Loper, of State Road; one sister, Margaret Rummell, of Punxsutawney, Pa.; two brothers, Isaac Howard, of Greensburg, Pa. and Albert (Elsie) Howard, of Homer City, Pa.; one grandchild, Patricia (Dwight) Loper Casstevens, of State Road; three great-grandchildren, Gail Casstevens, Joel (Barbara) Casstevens, and Jamie Casstevens; two great, great-grandchildren, Jonathan Casstevens and Shania Casstevens; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 15 at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Michael Ganzzermiller. Burial will be in Crestwood Memorial Gardens, State Road. HIGH POINT -- Mr. Gregory Scott Johnson, 35, of High Point, died Friday, November 12, 1999 at his residence. He was born August 31, 1964 in Forsyth County to Mr. and Mrs. Felix Joe and Betty Allen Johnson. Surviving are his mother, of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Terry Johnson and wife, Lin, of Winston-Salem and David Plowman, of Glen Falls, N.Y.; two sisters, Jo Keisler, of Columbia, S.C. and Susan Wicker, of Kernersville; three nieces, Meredith Johnson, Andrea Keisler, and Rachel Wicker; and three nephews, Avery Johnson, Billy Plowman, and Neil Wicker. MT. AIRY -- Helen Margaret Potts Madden, 82, of 523 Broad Street, Apt E., died Thursday, November 11, 1999 at her home. Mrs. Madden was born in Yadkin County on April 25, 1917 to Charles Henderson and Inez Jane Burton Potts. She was a retired school teacher, with 41 years of service, was senior citizens coordinator for 16 years for Pilot Mountain, and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Jim Moe, of Crystal River, Fla; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Beverly Madden, of Riviera Beach, Md. and Ray and Laraine Madden, of Alhambra, Calif; five grandchildren, Pamela Madden, Ronald and Scott Madden, Tracy Jentzsch, and Daniel Dalaski; five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Minnie Shores, of Raleigh, N.C., Hattie Watts, of Tobaccoville, N.C., Pearl Newberry, of Wytheville, Va., and Nettie Butchar, of Clarks Summitt, Pa. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, November 16 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cox-Needham Funeral Home Chapel in Pilot Mountain, N.C. by Rev. Stanley P. Butchar. Burial will be in Yadkinville City Cemetery. McCORMICK
DOBSON -- Mr. Bobby Gene McCormick, age 67, of 494 Buck Fork Rd., passed away Saturday morning, November 13, 1999 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin after a long illness. He was born in Surry County on December 13, 1931 to the late Everette Oscar and Nina Eugene Davenport McCormick. He was a retired farmer and a member and Deacon of Rockford Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Annie Lou Davis McCormick, of the home; two daughters, Mrs. J.C. (Diane McCormick) Davis, of East Bend, N.C. and Mrs. Donnie (Pam McCormick) Marion, of Mt. Airy; four grandchildren, Valerie and her husband, Scott Kiger, of East Bend, Amanda Davis, of East Bend, Adrian and her husband, Terry McCann, of Mt. Airy, and Adam Marion, also of Mt. Airy. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 15, 1999 at Rockford Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. His body will remain at Davis & Son Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 7:00-9:00. MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. George Edgar "Bill" Merrell, Jr., 78, of Eatons Church Road, died Friday night, November 12, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 15 at Fork Baptist Church, with Rev. Rusty Morrison, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home on Sunday night from 6:00-8:00. They request memorials be considered for the Building Fund of Fork Baptist Church, 3140 U.S. Hwy 64 East, Mocksville, N.C. 27028. Graveside Masonic Rites will be conducted by the Mocksville Lodge A.F. & A.M. 134. Lodge members will serve as pallbearers. Mr. Merrell was born in Davie County on November 8, 1921 to the late George Edgar Merrell, Sr. and Sally Hendrix Merrell and was the retired owner and operator of Merrell Furniture Company. He was a member of the Mocksville Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. 134 and a member of the Winston-Salem Shrine Club. He was past president of the Mocksville Lions Club and was also past president of the Wm. R. Davie Ruritan Club. He was president of the 50Plus Club in the Fork Community. He was a former member of Eatons Baptist Church and was currently a member of the Fork Baptist Church, where he served on the Deacon Board. During WWII, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Ferebee Merrell, in 1992. Two brothers, Wayne Merrell and Aubrey Merrell; and one sister, Vauda Minor, are also deceased. Mr. Merrell will be remembered as a very caring and giving citizen to the community. Surviving are his second wife, Oneida Hendrix Merrell, of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Stephen (Sarah) Merrell Head, of Charlotte and Mrs. Charlie (Vicki) Merrell Davis, of High Point; two sons, George Lindsay Merrell, of Mocksville, and Edgar Ferebee Merrell and wife, Maria, of High Point; two stepdaughters, Mrs. John Lloyd Stone, of Jeffersonville, Ga. and Mrs. Sarah Lloyd Smith, of Concord; five grandchildren, Stephanie Elizabeth Merrell, Jonathan Lindsay Merrell, Anthony Edgar Merrell, Amanda Kathryn Davis, and Elizabeth Anne Head; five step-grandsons, Charles Ellison, Anthony Ellison, Adam Smith, Paul Smith, and Drew Smith; one sister, Mrs. Wyona Merrell Johnson, of Mocksville; and several nieces; nephews; and cousins.
NAIL
COOLEEMEE -- Mr. John Henry Nail, 85, of Gladstone Road, died late Friday evening, November 12, 1999 at Davie County Hospital after a sudden illness. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 15 at First Baptist Church of Cooleemee, with Rev. Jeff Pennington, Pastor and Rev. Larry Allen officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of the Cross of Rowan Memorial Park in Salisbury. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home in Mocksville on Sunday night from 7:00-9:00. They requests memorials be considered for the Roof Fund of First Baptist Church of Cooleemee, c/o Mrs. Sarah Scott, P.O. Box 518, Cooleemee, N.C. 27014. The body will be placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the services on Monday. Mr. Nail was born in Davie County on December 22, 1913 to the late Henry and Flora Ferebee Nail and had been with Gravely Tractor Company. He had previously worked at Burlington Industries, with over 40 years of service. He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Cooleemee, where he had served on the Deacon Board and the Usher Board. He enjoyed gardening and all outside activities and especially enjoyed spending quality time with his children and grandchildren, and working and caring for his church. He was preceded in death by a brother. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Mary Allen Nail, of the home; two daughters, Cornelia Lea Nail, of the home and Betty McIntyre, of Woodleaf; one son, Ronnie D. Nail, of Mocksville; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Lorena N. Dull, of Cooleemee; and one niece.
PHILLIPS
KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Annie Lou Phillips Phillips, 77, of Kernersville, died Friday, November 12, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. Annie was born on July 24, 1922 in Forsyth County, a daughter of the late Robert and Alma Ruth Hayworth Phillips. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church and retired from Adams Millis. Survivors include her son, Robert W. Phillips, of Kernersville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Phillips; and her son, Donald C. Phillips. A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 15, 1999 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, with Rev. Charles Martin officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Sunday at Foster Funeral Home.
