GRIFFIN
KING -- Ernest Ralton Griffin, 85, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Scenic View Nursing Facility in King.
He was born Aug. 22, 1915, in Davie County to Dr. Ernest M. and Blanche Lee Griffin.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Renard Griffin, in 1991.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

IRELAND
Mrs. Blanche Llewellyn Ireland, 106, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Springwood Care. She was born Oct. 21, 1894, in Winston-Salem to Frank and Virginia Brendle Llewellyn. Mrs. Ireland lived all of her life in Forsyth County where she was a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church. She was a nurses aide at City Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eli W. Ireland in 1954; her son, F.P. "Pete" Ireland in 1992; and her daughter, Sara I. Blackburn, in 2000. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Kathryn Brewer and husband Bob of Hamptonville; two sons, Eli W. "Jack" Ireland Jr. and wife Jo Ann of Advance and Donald G. Ireland of Holden Beach; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren, one of whom is Landon John Ireland, who will carry on the Ireland family name. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Burial will follow in Waughtown Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

LAGLE
MOCKSVILLE -- Mrs. Grace Anita Stroud Lagle, 89, of Gladstone Road passed away Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Lagle was born July 31, 1911, in Iredell County to the late Henry W. and Laura Marlow Stroud. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Thomas J. Lagle, and a son, William "Bill" Lagle, and wife, Sylvia, of Mocksville. She was a member of Turrentine Baptist Church and a retired employee of Fiber Industries. Mrs. Lagle is survived by three sons, Jack Lagle and wife, Tenny; Paul Lagle and Bob Lagle and wife, Linda, and a daughter, Loura Barnhardt, and husband Gray, all of Mocksville; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a brother, Gilbert Stroud, and wife, Betty, of Statesville; and three sisters, Verlie Richardson, of Elkin, Ruth Jones, of Mocksville and Bernie Williams of Randleman. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Turrentine Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Smith officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Davie Funeral Service Chapel. Memorials can be made to Turrentine Baptist Church, 613 Turrentine Church Road, Mocksville, NC 27028 or Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. POTTS
MOCKSVILLE -- Mrs. Margaret Smith Potts, 81, of U.S. Highway 64 East died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cornatzer Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Whiteheart and the Rev. B.A. Carroll officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. They request memorials be considered for Cornatzer Baptist Church, 1372 Cornatzer Road, Mocksville, NC 27028. Mrs. Potts was born Jan. 2, 1920, in Davie County to the late Tallmadge and Josephine Armsworthy Smith and had been the co-owner of Smith Shoe Store. She was a member of Cornatzer Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Worth Garland Potts, in 1974. Survivors include three children, Kay Potts West, Glenda Potts Boger and W.G. "Dub" and wife, Diana Nicholson Potts, all of Mocksville; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Mark A. Smith of Wareham, Mass., and Norman T. Smith, of Mocksville.

POU
CHARLOTTE -- James Francis Pou, III died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001. Mr. Pou was born Aug. 4, 1913, in Winston-Salem the son of the late Robert Wiley Pou and Clara Vashti Shuford. He received his Bachelor's Degree in engineering from N.C. State University in 1935 and was very active with the alumni association and the student aid association. Mr. Pou was a member of the Wolfpack Club as well as a huge State fan and was an avid gardener and golfer. He served as a lieutenant with the U.S. Navy during World War II and was assigned to the Seabees. He was employed as a senior sales representative by Florida Steel Corporation and was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Mr. Pou served on the board of directors of Conbraco Industries Inc. He was a member of Myers Park Country Club in Charlotte and the Dunes in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He was a member and elder at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his daughter, Carolyn Pou Vanderberg of Charlotte; his sister, Clara Wiley Pou of Winston-Salem; brother-in-law Carl L. Mosack of Charlotte; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and their children. A funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at the Harry & Bryant Chapel, 500 Providence Road, with the Rev. Earle D. Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Active pallbearers will be Glenn Mosack, Cal Mosack, Carl Mosack, Chris Lee, Curtis Wellmon and Bob Nussman. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. John W. Pou, Steven Thomas Henderson and Matthew Vanderberg. Memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 100 E. PYRTLE
WESTFIELD -- Mrs. Lois Virginia King Pyrtle, 78, of 1009 Harden Road passed away Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Pyrtle was born in Stokes County Oct. 23, 1922, to McKinley Kence and Virginia Mae McKinney King. She was a homemaker and of the Primitive Baptist faith. She is survived by her husband, Samuel Joseph Pyrtle, of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Dale and Gray Marshall and Brenda and Donald Lankford, of Westfield, and Kathy and Royce Flippen of King; five sons and daughters-in-law, Clarence and Kay Pyrtle and Lance and Judy Pyrtle of Westfield, Louis Pyrtle of King, Keith and Sheila Pyrtle of Sandy Ridge and Randy and Roxanne Pyrtle of Westfield; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn Lawson, of King. Mrs. Pyrtle was preceded in death by a daughter, Annie Bell Pyrtle. Funeral services for Mrs. Pyrtle will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Old Orchard Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Vance Jones, Elder Scottie Marshall, Elder Rodney Marshall and Elder John Calhoun officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Myrtle is at Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain and will be taken to the church at 5:30 Tuesday evening where she will remain until the hour of the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening, Jan. 9, 2001, at the church and other times at the Pyrtle home. The Pyrtle family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.

SHOMAKER
WILKESBORO -- Mrs. Ruth Johnson Shomaker, 67, passed away Jan. 7, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Wilkesboro Baptist Church with the Rev. Alfred E. Andrews Jr. and the Rev. Steve Snipes officiating. A committal service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Banner Elk conducted by the Rev. Odell Smith and Mr. Roy Krege. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 Thursday prior to the committal service. Mrs. Shomaker was born in Roan Mountain, Tenn., to Herb and Monarka Johnson. She was a member of Roan Mountain Presbyterian Church and attended Wilkesboro Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Mrs. Ruby Arnett, Mrs. Blanche Smith, Mrs. Reva Cordell and Mrs. Emma Street. Mrs. Shomaker is survived by her husband, Earl Shomaker of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Alisa Shomaker of Wilkesboro; a granddaughter, Jayme Shomaker of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Mrs. Gladys Winters of San Angelo, Texas, Mrs. Mae Shell and Mrs Hazel Parlier of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Tuesday evening at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro. In lieu of flowers, memorials for the purchase of Bibles may be made to the Gideons International, Wilkes North Camp, P.O. Box 1791, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

SIDES
Mrs. Minnie Bedsaul Sides, 89, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Sides was born Oct. 1, 1911, in Surry County to Pete Earl and Almedia Lowe. She was a lifetime member of Hopewell Moravian Church. A twin sister, Lillie Bedsaul Beckerdite, preceded Mrs. Sides in death. Surviving are two sons, Roger Eugene Sides and wife, Ann, and Ervin C. Sides; a daughter, Elaine Wind, and husband, Lute; five grandchildren, Vonda Sides Adams, Tony Sides and wife, Kim, Lisa Stafford and husband, Barry, and Joel and Clay Wind; three great-grandchildren, Anthony Sides, Matthews Adams and Brandon Stafford; and a sister, Lucy Lovelace. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hopewell Moravian Church with the Rev. Jeff Carter, the Rev. David Merritt and the Rev. Jack Nance officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. WALSER
LEXINGTON -- Mr. Gaither Stokes Walser, 67, of Lantern Lane died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at 9:05 a.m. at his home. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Craven Ford officiating. There will be a private graveside service and burial at Yadkin College Cemetery. Mr. Walser was born in Davidson County Jan. 8, 1934, to Donald Adderton Walser and Margaret McNulty Walser. He was a graduate of Woodberry Forest School and received his undergraduate and law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He did a postgraduate course in taxation at the New York University of Law. He was a Phi Delta Phi member and a member of the board of editors, North Carolina Law Review, 1958. He was a senior partner in the Brinkley-Walser law firm in Lexington and practiced in the area of tax law, corporation law, real estate law, estate planning and business litigation. He was a member of the North Carolina Bar Association and served on the committee on taxation from 1959 to 1965. He was a member of the American Bar Association and had served on the committee on income of estates and trust from 1968 to 1970. He was a member of the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel. Surviving are his spouse, Jeanne "Toni" Tomlin Walser of the home; a son, Vance and wife Joy of Lexington; a daughter, Carolyn and husband Earl Johnson III of Raleigh; stepsons Gill Mende and David Mende of Atlanta; stepdaughter Cynthia King of Columbia, S.C.; grandchildren Earl Johnson IV and Sydney Patterson of Raleigh; and step-grandchildren Kathleey King and Emma King of Columbia, S.C. and Katherine Mende of Atlanta. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the home of Vance Walser, 201 Country Club Drive. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, N.C. Affiliate, 3109 Poplarwood Court Suite 125, Raleigh, NC 27604. Davidson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

WELBORN
KERNERSVILLE -- Mr. John William Welborn Jr., 77, of Creekwood Forest Drive died Jan. 7, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Welborn was born Feb. 17, 1923, in Forsyth County to John and Maggie Payne Welborn. He was a lifelong resident of Forsyth County. Mr. Welborn was a graduate of Sedge Garden High School. He was a retired carpenter and farmer and was a member of Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church and the Dan Hayworth Bible Class. In addition to his parents, Mr. Welborn was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Edwards and Mrs. Margaret Cline. Mr. Welborn is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Cora Mae Willard of Gable, S.C., Mrs. Gladys "Pat" Griffin of Kernersville, Mrs. Betty Rose Alcon of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Billie Ann Alcon and her husband, J.C., of High Point; and 18 nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Abbott's Creek Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Lee Stocks, the Rev. Jack Rose, the Rev. Roy Cantrell and the Rev. Michael Smith. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point. Memorials may be directed to Abbott's Creek Missionary Baptist Church, 2816 Abbott's Creek Church Road, High Point, NC 27265 or to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262.

BELTON
Mr. James Avery Belton, 85, of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, November 9, 1999. He was born June 14, 1914 in Rockingham County, to the late Luther L. and Ida Talbott Belton. Mr. Belton was a member of Central Terrace United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of North Carolina State University. He was an Engineer with Western Electric Company, retiring with 32 years of service. Mr. Belton was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was an avid bowler and fisherman. Mr. Belton was preceded in death by his son, Phillip Jay Belton. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Mildred Stone Belton of the home; a son, Avery Lee Belton and wife, Phyllis S. of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Janet B. Cooke of Little River, S.C.; two granddaughters, Teresa Ann Belton of Winston-Salem, and Jennifer Gray Cooke of Little River; and a brother, Calvin W. Belton of Tallahassee, Fla. A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 11, 1999 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. David Green officiating. The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel Wednesday night from 7-9. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central Terrace United Methodist Church, 3 East Devonshire St., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27127.
