McGEE
Mr. Leon Alex McGee, Sr., 77, of Germanton Road died Friday, November 5, 1999 at his home after a brief illness. Mr. McGee was born on December 29, 1921 in Pinnacle, N.C. to William Allen and Mary Jane Fulp McGee. He was retired from the Civil Service and other related government projects after 42 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Leon Alex McGee, Jr.; and 11 brothers and sisters, Ralph, Roscoe, Roy, Lillian Johnson, Wilma Kirk, Lester, Eugene, Nannie Boyles, Glenn, William and Della Burgess. Surviving are his wife, Doris Westmoreland McGee of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Don Piet of Las Vegas, Nev., Emily and Dick Stinson of Wilmington, N.C., and Lora and James Carlisle of Montgomery Village, Md.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Gray McGee of Pilot Mountain and Cub McGee of Kernersville; and two sisters, Grace Holland of King and Irene Collins of Winston-Salem. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Vogler & Sons, Reynolda Chapel with Rev. Mark Mashburn, Rev. Patricia Suggs and Robert Spainhour officiating. A military graveside service by the District 11 Memorial Honor Guard will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. PARKER
Mr. James Coy Parker, Jr., 75, of 2440 Merrimont Drive, Winston-Salem, died Sunday, November 7, 1999 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Parker was born in Winston-Salem on September 3, 1924 to the late James Coy Parker and Lillie Miller Parker. He was a 1942 graduate of Reynolds High School. Mr. Parker served in the United States Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946 and participated in the Guadal Canal, Bougainville, and New Georgia campaigns in the South Pacific. He was called again to serve in the Korean War. Mr. Parker graduated from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. In 1952 he joined the Security Life an Trust Company, and later became employed with Integon Corporation. Mr. Parker worked there for over 30 years as a Personnel Manager and Vice President until his retirement in 1983. He married the former Nell Gywn Brame of North Wilkesboro on January 18, 1958. A lifetime resident of Winston-Salem, Mr. Parker was a leader in business, community, and charity affairs. He was a past President of the National Office Management Association (Winston-Salem Chapter), a former Chairman, Staff-Parish Committee, Centenary United Methodist Church, a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, and a member of the Winston-Salem Y-Men's Club. Mr. Parker enjoyed golfing, civil war history, sailing, and the Chicago Cubs. Surviving are his wife of the home; three daughters, Gwyn Anne Wackerhagen of Charlotte, N.C., Tate Leftwich of Stafford, Va., and Jennifer Booker of Wilmington, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Jean Moore and Carol P. Stuart, both of Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 9, 1999 at Centenary United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. Michael Brown and Dr. George P. Robinson. The family will receive friends at the Vogler Funeral Home at Reynolda Road on Monday night from 6-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to either Centenary United Methodist Church or Kate B. JONESVILLE -- Mr. James Lovell Redfern, 45, of US Hwy 21, Jonesville, passed away Sunday, November 7, 1999 at his home. Mr. Redfern was born January 5, 1953 in Simpson County, Franklin, Ky. to Lovell and Georgeanna Redfern. He was retired from the US Navy and worked at Granger in Winston-Salem from 1972-1998. He was a member of East Elkin Full Gospel Church. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his wife, KayLynn Gail Gilpin Redfern of 12 years, of the home; one daughter, Kathy Jean Billings; one son, Brett Allen Redfern; two sisters, Gayle Wheat and husband, Richard and Judith Pitman and husband, Chad, all of Bowling Green, Ky.; his mother of Bowling Green, Ky.; his mother and father-in-law, Dwayne and Kathy Cornett of Jonesville; sister-in-law, Brenda G. Webster of Elkin; brothers-in-law, Gene (Teresa) Gilpin, Greg (Nancy) Gilpin, Duane Gilpin, Tracy (Marlene) Gilpin, and Jerry Gilpin, all of Jonesville, and the late Johnny Gilpin (Darlene) of Elkin; several nieces, nephews; and one great nephew. BARBEE
Mr. Charles Ralph Barbee, 78, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born March 2, 1922, in Guilford County to Edgar Buddy and Mattie Charles Barbee. Mr. Barbee was a member of First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem and the Philadelphia Sunday school class. He served in the Army/Air Force Far Eastern Squadron Command during World War II, was a member of the American Legion for over 49 years, past three-term commander of the Clyde Post 55, district 18 commander for three terms, department vice commander for one term, served on the national committee seven times and many department committiees. Mr. Barbee had retired from Norman Stockton with 43 years of service. Preceding Mr. Barbee in death was a daughter, Becky Barbee. Survivors include his wife, Irene Williams Barbee of the home; two sons, Charles Ronald Barbee of Cook, S.C., and Buddy Lee Barbee of Winston-Salem; a brother, Edward F. Barbee and wife Alease of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Georgia Barbee of the home and Mildred Jordan of Smithfield; four grandchildren, Butch Barbee, Ron Barbee and Becky Vandergrift, all of Charleston, S.C., and Kristen Leigh Barbee of Winston-Salem; and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at First Baptist Church in the Reich Chapel by the Rev. Henry Stokes. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Dicie Virginia (Russell) Botts entered into eternal rest Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, in Washington, D.C. She was preceded in death by her son, Donald Wharton; her sisters, Patricia Wharton and Helen Eaton; and brothers, Franklin Agnew, James Oliver Sr. and Paul Wharton. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, James Russell; three daughters, Fredrika Williams and Victoria Glenn of Winston-Salem and Tamara (Larry) Phillips of East Bend; four sons, James Oliver (Nancy Wharton of Randolph, Mass., William Thomas Botts of Oakland, Calif., James H. Botts of Washington, D.C. and Garrison (Kim) Botts of Sacramento, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Monroe C. (Joyce) Wharton of East Bend, William (Tina) Wharton of Mocksville and Richard Wharton of Chesapeake, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2000, at the McGuire Funeral Home, 7400 Georgia Ave., N.W. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Glenns Chapel in East Bend with the Rev. Robert Lawten officiating and Garrison Botts offering the eulogy. BUCHANAN
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Mrs. Huey K. Buchanan, 93, passed away Dec. 31, 2000, at St. Catherines Laboure Manor in Jacksonville. She was born in Yadkinville in 1907 and had resided in Jacksonville since 1970. Her son, Harold G. Buchanan and grandchildren, Michelle, Alan and Stephen Buchanan and Amy Buchanan Vann; son Roy L. Buchanan and grandson Michael Buchanan survive her. She is also survived by several great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 4 in the chapel of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home with interment in Jacksonville Memory Gardens.
BUTNER
Fred Washington Butner Jr., 73, of Winston-Salem, died Jan. 6, 2001, at his home of complications resulting from pulmonary fibrosis. He loved and was devoted to his family, his church and his profession. Mr. Butner was born Dec. 15, 1927, in Winston-Salem to Fred W. Butner Sr. and Katharine Pritchard Butner. He was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and N.C. State University, and was prominent in the practice of architecture locally for 50 years. He started his architectural firm in 1952 and designed over 300 projects in North Carolina and the Southeast. He was the architect for over 100 school and college projects in Forsyth County and Northwest North Carolina, including multiple buildings at Forsyth Technical Community College, Surry Community College, West Forsyth High School, and many others. He also served as architect for numerous churches, governmental complexes, and commercial, office, bank and residential projects in the area, including the Forsyth County Hall of Justice, and branch offices for First Federal Savings and Loan, Piedmont Federal Savings and Loan, among many others. Mr. Butner was active in civic and professional affairs on the local, state and national levels. He was honored by being named a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects in 1974, and served as president of both the N.C. American Institute of Architects and the N.C. Licensing Board for Architects. He also served as president of the Winston-Salem Lions Club, the Winston-Salem Engineers Club and the Forsyth Country Club and was active in those organizations for many years. He was a lifelong devoted and active member of Burkhead United Methodist Church, where he served on many committees and held numerous other official and unofficial positions, including chairman of the Official Board and Trustees. He was the architect for Burkhead's present church complex on Silas Creek Parkway. Mr. Butner was an avid golfer for many years and enjoyed playing various courses throughout the Southeast with his wife and their friends. He had retired from golfing in recent years due to his health. Mr. Butner was preceded in death by his son, Fred Raymond Butner, who died in 1992. Surviving are Martha Hinkle Butner, his devoted wife of over 50 years; two sons, Blain B. Butner and wife Peggy of Arlington, Va., and David E. Butner of Winston-Salem; one granddaughter, Sarah T. Butner of Arlington, Va.; one sister, Ann B. Chipman of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Burkhead United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001. Mr. Butner will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. Mr. James Henry "Sonny" Crawford of 752 Aureole St. passed away Sunday at his home. He was born in Winston-Salem March 22, 1930, to Mrs. Bertha Tucker and the late Fred H. Wagner. He attended the local public schools and was retired from Spirit Construction Co. At an early age, he was baptized in and attended First Waughtown Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Gloria Jean Crawford, of the home; his mother, Mrs. Bertha Tucker; his stepfather, Mr. James Tucker; his stepmother, Mrs. Roberta Wagner; two daughters, Mrs. Elaine Brockman and Mrs. Sandra Crews; two sons, James Crawford Jr. and Tyrone Wilson; four stepdaughters, Mrs. Deborah Speaks, Mrs. Penny Small, Mrs. Dannie Mae Galloway and Mrs. Rebecca Cain; a stepson, Mr. Kerry Thompson, all of Winston-Salem; five sisters, Mrs. Janice W. Ross, Ms. Jeri Wagner, the Rev. Margaret (George) Johnson and Mrs. Lue-Ann (Billy) Lucas, all of Winston-Salem, and Mrs. Ernestine T. (Lemuel) Morris of Danville, Va.; three brothers, Mr. William E. Tucker and Mr. David Tucker and Mr. Lewis G. (Sonalia) Tucker, of Los Angeles; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a devoted friend, Mr. George Staley; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at First Waughtown Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Bishop officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 7:30 tonight at the funeral home. The procession will assemble and leave from the home, 752 Aureole St., en route to the church at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. DAVIS
PINE KNOLL SHORES -- Mrs. Martha H. Davis, 63, a former resident of Kernersville, died Jan. 7, 2001, at the Wake Medical Center. She was born on Feb. 10, 1937, to the late Ruth and Charles Heightshoe of Winston-Salem. Sue worked as a registered nurse for hospitals in Forsyth County, and later, as an industrial nurse for Burlington Industries in Kernersville. She moved to Pine Knoll Shores in 1986 and was active in the First United Methodist Church of Morehead City. Sue was preceded in death by her sister, Luann Thompson, and is survived by her sister, Alice Willard. She is also survived by her three children, Martha Davis Morton of Oxford, Edgar F. Davis, II of Stuttgart, Germany, and Alan D. Davis of Fairfax Station, Va.; and her six grandchildren. A memorial service followed by family visitation will be held at Voglers Funeral Home, Main Street, in Winston-Salem at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001.
