AMOS
MADISON -- Mrs. Martha Lolene Carter Amos, 73, of 6081 NC 772, died Saturday, November 6, 1999 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, 1999 at Oak Grove Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Mrs. Amos was born in Stokes County. She was retired from Burlington Industries and was a lifetime member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude "Shorty" Cecil Amos; her parents, William Sam and Bettie Francis Carter; her brother, James Grover Carter; and her sister, Lillie Bell Bostic. Survivors include her son, Ricky Samuel Amos of Madison; her daughters, Betty Amos Stevens and husband, Tom of Westfield and Shelia Amos Pyrtle and husband, Keith of Sandy Ridge; her granddaughter, April Collins Hernandez and husband, Manuel; great-grandson, Talley D. Hernandez; step-grandson, Scotty L. Pyrtle; her brother, Fletcher Carter of Madison; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday, November 8, 1999 at Oak Grove Baptist Church and other times at the residence. Mrs. Amos will lie in-state at the church from 4 p.m. Monday until the time of the service, Tuesday. Memorials may be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church, Attn: Mrs. Frankie Case, 206 S. ANGEL
GREENSBORO -- Mrs. Evelyn Morgan Angel, 89, of 2206 Pisgah Church Rd., died Saturday, November 6, 1999 at Wesley-Long Hospital. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 9, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Angel had been a member of Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church since 1943, she was also a member of the Missionary Society, the Loyal Workers Sunday School Class, and the Eastern Star Chapter 14. She was retired from Belk Department Store after 30 years of service in the alterations department. Mrs. Angel was predeceased by her husband, Roy Angel; and brother, J.H. Morgan. Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Ernestine and Charles Beal of Greensboro, Maxine and Tommy Cole of High Point, Melvine and Snow Adams of Asheville, and Rebecca and Chuck Ernest of Greensboro; brothers, Lonnie Morgan of Winston-Salem and Eugene Morgan of Walnut Cove; eight grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday evening at Hanes-Linebery Funeral Home, N. Elm Chapel. BELLAMY

(From the Moravian Book of Worship) William Griffin Bellamy, 72, of Winston-Salem, died November 6, 1999, after a long period of declining health. Mr. Bellamy was born February 18, 1927 in Rocky Mount, N.C. to William Jennings Bellamy and Nellie Louise Minton Bellamy. Educated in Rocky Mount, he was employed by the Atlantic Coastline Railroad, before serving in the United States Air Force from 1952-1956. He was employed as a tool and machine design engineer by Western Electric in Winston-Salem in 1956 and retired from AT&T in 1989. Mr. Bellamy formerly served on the Board of Directors and as a band director for Bethabara Moravian Church, and was a member of the Bethabara Concert Band. A multi-talented man, a loving husband, and father, he was a Mason and Shriner. Surviving are wife, Jane Thomas Bellamy of Winston-Salem; son, Freeman Thomas Bellamy of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter, Sarah Bellamy Harden of Raleigh; granddaughter, Bellamy Abbott Harden of Raleigh; and brothers, Jennings Lee Bellamy of Rocky Mount, N.C. and Marvin James Bellamy of Richardson, Texas. The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Parkway Chapel on Monday, November 8, 1999 from 7-9 p.m. Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, 1999 at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Chapel, with burial to follow at Old Town Cemetery, Old Town Rd. BOWMAN
WALNUT COVE -- Mrs. Doris Carter Bowman, 69, of 6160 Pine Hall Road, Walnut Cove, N.C., died Sunday, November 7, 1999 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, after a long illness. Mrs. Bowman was born in Rockingham County on April 11, 1930 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hobert and Essie Lee Carter. Mrs. Bowman is survived by her husband of 52 years, Philip Leon Bowman; and two children and their spouses, Philip Leon Bowman, Jr. and wife, Carolyn of Walnut Cove and Kathy Bowman Atkins and husband, Harold of Kernersville. Additional surviving family members include, three grandchildren and their spouses, Angela Chatman and husband, William, Karen Wilkins and husband David, and Lori Bray and husband, Jonathan; six grandchildren, Kayla and Matt Wilkins, Jay and Jared Chatman, and Elacia and Tommy Bray; a brother, Thomas Herman Carter of Rockingham County; and two sisters, Mrs. Francis Miller and Mrs. Erlene Purgason of Reidsville and Madison, N.C., respectively. Mrs. Bowman attended Bethany High School in Rockingham, N.C. She was a charter member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, and held numerous positions and offices in the church including, having served as the church secretary-treasurer from 1981 until the time of her death. Mrs. Bowman retired from Hanes Hosiery in 1992 after 39 years of service. The family will receive visitors at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home, 141 Smith Edwards Rd., Kernersville from 7:00-9:00 p.m., Monday, November 8, 1999. Funeral services will be held at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 7279 Pine Hall Road, Belews Creek, N.C. at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, 1999. Interment will be at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Pine Hall Rd., Walkertown, N.C. immediately following the Tuesday afternoon service. BRANDON
YADKINVILLE -- Mrs. Juanita Myers Brandon, of Fish Brandon Road, died November 7, 1999. Mrs. Brandon was born in Yadkin County August 4, 1912 to the late Noah A. and Amelia Todd Myers. After attending Appalachian State University, she served as a primary teacher in the Yadkin County School System for 39 years and retired from Yadkinville Elementary School in 1977. She was a member of the Yadkin County Unit of Retired School Personnel, a member and Past Matron of Yadkin Chapter #223 Order of the Eastern Star, a life-long member of Deep Creek Baptist Church, where she served for many years in various teaching capacities, and as a member of the Choir. She was also a member of the Yadkin Senior Chorus. She helped to organize and served as president of one of the first "Home Demonstration Clubs", organized in Yadkin County by Miss Irene Brown. These clubs performed a great service to our country during our years at war in 1940-1944. She was predeceased by her husband, William Poe Brandon in 1985; and by a brother, Harrison Myers. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Donald Burke of Jamestown; three sons, William F. "Bill" and wife, Darlene Brandon of Yadkinville; Kent Brandon of Yadkinville, and Thomas M. "Tom" and wife, Sara Brandon of Statesville; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruby Davis of Winston-Salem and Loyce Marklin of Mocksville; a brother, Claude J. Myers of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Deep Creek Baptist Church with Dr. Ron Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials made to the cemetery fund or church needs will be appreciated, or to the Masonic Eastern Star Home, 700 S. Holden Road, Greensboro, N.C. 27407. BYRD
KING -- William Emmett (Bill) Byrd, 87, of YMCA Camp Road, died unexpectedly at his home Friday, November 5, 1999. He was born March 5, 1912 in Surry County to Walter Emmett and Celia Bartley Byrd. Bill was a retired Maintenance Director for YMCA Camp Hanes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Stanley Byrd in 1991. Surviving are one daughter, Carol Sams of King; two grandsons, David Sams and wife, Shelley of King and Mark Sams of Winston-Salem; one granddaughter, Catherine Quigley of Raleigh; and one great-grandson, Grant Wayne Sams. He was a member of Capella Church of Christ, where funeral services will be held Monday, November 8, 1999 at 11 a.m. Lamar Tillman, Minister, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m Sunday at Capella Church of Christ and at other times at his home. (Slate Funeral Home)

Mrs. Lois Wilson Cathcart, 58, of 4441 Inwood Drive, passed away on Saturday, November 6, 1999 at her residence, following a brief illness. She was born in Baltimore, Md. on August 30, 1941, the eldest child of the union of Robert L. Wilson, Sr. and the late Rebecca Clement Wilson. She moved to Winston-Salem, N.C. at an early age, and attended the Forsyth County Schools. She graduated from Atkins High School in 1959. She received a B.S. Degree from Winston-Salem State University and a Master's of Education from North Carolina A&T State University. Lois was a veteran of 29 years in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth School System. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Ruth Group Missionary, the Senior Group of Mount Zion Missionary Circle, Sunday School Adult Class #5, and a member of the Baptist Training Union. She leaves rejoicing in her home-going and blessed with her memory, three devoted children, Jamie Cathcart-Stowe (James), James E. Cathcart, III, and Anthony J. Cathcart; one grandchild, Jasmine R. Stowe; two step-grandchildren, Dameka Stowe and Corrie Stowe; the father of her children, James E. Cathcart, Jr; her father, Robert L. Wilson, Sr.; three sisters, Judith Buford (Junior), Shirley Dumas, and Barbara Knapper-Bolden; one brother, Robert L. Wilson, Jr.; one god-daughter, Chantae' Reynolds; many aunts; uncles; cousins; nieces; nephews; and devoted friends; and two life long friends, Jeanette B. Hyman and Ella Lindon. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, November 9, 1999 at 4:00 p.m. from the Mount Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Serenus T. Churn, Sr. officiating. PILOT MOUNTAIN -- Mr. Jesse V. Collins, 78, of 159 Brooklyn Trail, Pilot Mountain, died late Saturday, November 6, 1999 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. Mr. Collins was born February 19, 1921 to Marion and Lomia Collins. He was a farmer and a retired truck driver with Spector. Mr. Collins was a member of Stoney Ridge Baptist Church and a veteran of the Navy, having served in WWII. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Edith Hill Collins of the home; one daughter, Trish Ragan of Greensboro; two sons, Ray Collins of King and Steve Collins of Westfield; three step-daughters, Peggy Boles of Germanton, Norma Noble of Yadkinville, and Ann Pettit of Pfafftown; one step-son, Steve Edmonds of King; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, November 9, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Lamar Tillman. Burial will be in Lawsonville Church of God Cemetery with Military Honors by the American Legion of King, Post 290. The family will receive friends Monday from 7-9 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel.
GENTRY
ROARING RIVER -- Mr. James Olin Gentry, 79, of N. Lomax Road, Roaring River, died Saturday, November 6, 1999 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. Mr. Gentry was born April 26, 1920 in Wilkes County to the late Walter and Viola Wiles Gentry. Mr. Gentry was a retired farmer and a member of Stony Ridge Baptist Church. He served on the Board of Directors of Surry/Yadkin Rural Electric Association, and was the past Director of Wilkes Telephone Membership Corporation. Mr. Gentry also served as Choir Director at Stony Ridge Baptist Church for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Reese and Aldean Gentry; one sister, Vera Martin; two infant brothers; and one infant sister. Survivors include his wife, Juanita W. Gentry of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy (Anita) Gentry of Statesville and Bobby Ray (Faye) Gentry of Roaring River; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy G. (Scott) Bright of Charlotte and Annie Billings (Edward) Dyer of Millers Creek; seven grandchildren, Jennie Gentry, Terri Gentry, Julie Gentry, Kelly Gentry, Eli Bright, Micalah Bright, and Hannah Bright; and two sisters, Ina Gentry Settle of Elkin and Chistalee Transou of Roaring River. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 9, 1999 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Home Baptist Church by Rev. Keith Lyons, Rev. Kenneth Jordan, and Rev. Ebert Billings. Mr. Gentry will lie in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 7-9 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. McCUMMINGS
Mr. Claude Lee McCummings, 87, of 3908 Glen Oak Drive passed away on Friday, November 5, 1999 at Wake Forest University/Baptist Medical Center following a period of illness. He was born on July 4, 1912 to the late Mrs. Rosa Bethea McCummings and Mr. Blake McCummings in Marion, S.C. His family relocated to Hamlet, N.C., where he spent the early years of his life and joined First Baptist Church. As a young man, he moved to Winston-Salem, where he met and married his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Mrs. Brownie L. McCummings, who preceded him in death on February 24, 1999. Also preceding him in death was a son, Harold McCummings; a granddaughter, Shelia McCummings; four sisters, Mrs. Mamie Malloy, Mrs. Rena Jackson, Mrs. Julia Lucas, and Mrs. Mildred Timmons; and two brothers, Mr. Robert McCummings and Mr. Walter McCummings. Mr. McCummings was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II. He was employed by B.F. Huntley Furniture Company (now Thomasville Furniture) for more than 30 years. He is survived by three sons, David (Mary) McCummings of Charlotte, Claude (Barbara) McCummings, Jr. of Winston-Salem, and Donald (Linda) McCummings of Walkertown; two daughters, Jacqueline (Walter) Black of Kernersville and Beverly (Tony) Sellars of Winston-Salem; 27 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Willie (Terri) McCummings of Rochester, N.Y. and Herbert McCummings of Springfield, Mass.; one sister, Mrs. Gladys Grice of Bronx, N.Y.; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth McCummings of Winston-Salem; two sisters-in-law, Earline W. Hairston and Vernelle W. Spratt of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, November 9, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with Reverend Samuel J. Cornelius officiating. Interment will be in the family plot of the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will meet with relatives and friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Russell Funeral Home.
