NOLAN
ELKIN -- Mrs. Mary Hazel Phillips Nolan, 93, of 601 Johnson Ridge Road, #125 Parkwood Place, Elkin, died Thursday, November 4, 1999, at Parkwood Place. Mrs. Nolan was born in Ashe County August 20, 1906 to the late James Payton and Minnie Hayes Phillips. Mrs. Nolan attended Appalachian State Teachers College and was a teacher for 40 years. She began teaching in East Bend, but later moved to Jonesville Elementary School where she taught for most of her teaching career. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael F. Nolan; two sisters; and two brothers. Surviving are a sister, Lucille P. Coker of Elkin; a brother, J. Wayne Phillips of Elkin; a sister-in-law, Sara D. Phillips of Mount Airy; and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces, and great-nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Jonesville, conducted by Dr. Maxwell Hill. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. to lie instate. Burial will be in Crestwood Memorial Gardens in State Road. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Johnson Funeral Home in Elkin. NORMAN
MOUNT AIRY -- Mrs. Maude Eliza McCollum Norman, 86, passed away Thursday, November 4, 1999 at Central continuing Care after an extended illness. Mrs. Norman was born April 26, 1913 in Surry county to Lee and Mary Jane Owen McCollum. Mrs. Norman was retired from Hanes Knitware in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Norman was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joyce Monroe Norman; a sister, Josie McCollum Key; and three brothers, Roy, Gurnie, and Byron McCollum. Surviving Mrs. Norman is a step-son, Kent Norman of Pfafftown; a half-sister, Nancy (Henry) McCreary, and step-mother, Alma McCollum all of Pinnacle. Also surviving is a step-granddaughter, Mandy Norman (Van) Sullivan, and two step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services for Mrs. Norman will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. at New Home United Methodist church, Saturday, November 6, 1999 with the Rev. Ben Sheperd and the Rev. Sarah Kalish officiating. MT. AIRY -- Thelma Frye Robertson, 87, formerly of Mt. Airy, and the widow of J.M. (Peg) Frye, passed away Friday morning at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Thelma had been a very active member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church in the 40's, and for a number of years she was on the staff of the Baptist's Children's Home of North Carolina. Recently she had been residing at the Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem. She is survived by one son, James M. Frye of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Mae Arnder of High Point; one brother, M.B. Williamson of Mt. Airy; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive guests at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy on Sunday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The funeral service, conducted by Rev. Robert McCrary, will be held at Moody Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 8, 1999 and will be followed by internment at Oakdale Cemetery.

PINE HALL -- Mrs. Pauline S. McCandless Sands, 77, of Route 1, Pine Hall, died Thursday, November 4, 1999 at Britthaven of Madison. She retired from Tultex and was a member of Willow Oak Baptist Church in Walnut Cove. Mrs. Sands was preceded in death by her husband, Noel Sands; a daughter, Nancy Sands Kendrick; brothers, Ray McCandless, Lloyd McCandless; and several step-brothers and sisters. Surviving are one son, Bobby Sands and wife, Carol of Mayodan; three sisters, Ruby M. Manring of High Point, Dorothy M. Griffin of Eden, and Nelda M. Flake of Whitsett; a brother, Harold McCandless of High Point; three grandchildren, Todd Kendrick, Dana Claybrook and husband, Mike, and Allen Sands; one great-grandchild, Cassie Claybrook; and a special friend, Walter Gunn. GREENSBORO -- Mrs. Evelyn Moran Angel, 89, of 2206 Pisgah Church Rd., died Saturday, November 6, 1999 at Wesley-Long Hospital. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 9, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Angel had been a member of Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church since 1943, she was also a member of the Missionary Society, the Loyal Workers Sunday School Class, and the Eastern Star Chapter 14. She was retired from Belk Department Store after 30 years of service in the alterations department. Mrs. Angel was predeceased by her husband, Roy Angel; and brother, J.H. Morgan. Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Ernestine and Charles Beal of Greensboro, Maxine and Tommy Cole of High Point, Melvine and Snow Adams of Asheville, and Rebecca and Chuck Ernest of Greensboro; brothers, Lonnie Morgan of Winston-Salem and Eugene Morgan of Walnut Cove; eight grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. KING -- William Emmett (Bill) Byrd, 87, of YMCA Camp Road, died unexpectedly at his home Friday, November 5, 1999. He was born March 5, 1912 in Surry County to Walter Emmett and Celia Bartley Byrd. Bill was a retired Maintenance Director for YMCA Camp Hanes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Stanley Byrd in 1991. Surviving are one daughter, Carol Sams of King; two grandsons, David Sams and wife, Shelley of King and Mark Sams of Winston-Salem; one granddaughter, Catherine Quigley of Raleigh; and one great-grandson, Grant Wayne Sams. He was a member of Capella Church of Christ, where funeral services will be held Monday, November 8, 1999 at 11 a.m. Lamar Tillman, Minister, will officiate. MT. AIRY -- Mr. Charles Franklin Chappell, 68, of 201 Forest Hill Road, Mt. Airy, husband of Sylvia S. Chappell, died Saturday, November 6, 1999 at the Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Chappell was born in Forsyth County June 20, 1931, the son of the late Thomas Frank and Essie Speas Chappell. Mr. Chappell was the owner of the Chappell Real Estate Co. He was a well known real estate appraiser and broker and he also taught real estate courses at Wytheville Community College and Surry Community College. Mr. Chappell was also a veteran of the US Army. Surviving are his wife, Sylvia Speas Chappell of the home; one sister, Ms. Barbara Jo Easter of Cana; two nephews, Phillip M. Easter and T. Darrell Easter, both of Mt. Airy; and one special cousin, Hassie Lineback Utt of Cana, Va. In addition to his parents, Mr. Chappell was preceded in death by his brother, Edward C. Chappell. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 8, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy with entombment to follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Mary Lee Robinson Clark, 77, of 1221 Mint Street, passed away November 3, 1999 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Clark was born November 9, 1921 to the late Jessie Frazier and Alexander Belver. She retired from Thomasville Furniture Company in 1987, after 20 years of service. Mrs. Clark was a member of St. John C.M.E. Church for more than sixty years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Rover Clark. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Theresa Clark-Caldwell and Mrs. Earnestine Clark-Coplin; her twin brother, Joseph (Margaret) Holmes; four grandchildren, Mrs. Pamela (Michael) Brown, Dr. Patricia D. Bailey, Sterling Bailey, Jr., and Carla J. Clark; eight grandchildren; a loving sister-in-law, Mrs. Alberta L. Black; one brother-in-law, Pete (Evelyn) Clark; three nieces; two nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 8, 1999 at 1 p.m. at St. John C.M.E. Church with Rev. Bobby Best officiating. Burial will follow in Piedmont Memorial.
