BROOKS
Mrs. Clara Bell Brooks, 91, of 4630 S. Main Street, died unexpectedly Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center.
Mrs. Brooks was a native of Charlotte, N.C., where she was born May 28, 1908 to the late Robert H. and Maude Mae Pridmore Jacobs. She retired from the National Security Agency in Ft. Meade, Md., was a member and past vice-president of the American Legion, Washington, D.C. Costella Post 15 and was Chapeau of 8-40, District of Columbia.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Barbara B. Folsom, of Winston-Salem; one grandson, James Frank Folsom, III and wife, Lucille, of Rocky Mount, N.C.; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, William Earl Jacobs, of Hendersonville, N.C.
A memorial service will be conducted 4:00 p.m., Saturday, October 30, 1999 at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel.
The Rev. Lisa L. Wishon, Associate Minister of Ardmore United Methodist Church, will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

CARROLL
Mr. Wallace Edwin "Wally" Carroll, 77, of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born February 6, 1922 in Stokes County, to Edwin Wallace and Nina Sheppard Carroll.
Mr. Carroll served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was a member of First Baptist Church and was retired from Western Electric Co.
For many years, he volunteered at Forsyth Medical Center and the American Red Cross.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Isabel McCracken and Beulah Carroll; and two brothers, Roland Carroll and Spencer Carroll.
Surviving are a daughter, Carrie Rose Nelson, of Pine Grove, Calif; a granddaughter, Stephanie Rose Rath, of Calif.; a sister-in-law, Hattie Carroll, of Winston-Salem; a niece, Robin C. Shelton, of King; and two nephews; Roland S. Carroll, of Charlotte and Ed Beatty, of Cayman Island.
A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m., Friday, October 29 at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel by Dr. David Hughes.
Burial will follow in the Quaker Gap Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Thursday at Vogler's Reynolda Chapel.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 501 W. 5th Street, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101 or the American Red Cross, 690 Coliseum Drive, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27106.

CROTTS
Pearl Rena Swaim Crotts of 2363 E. Sprague St., Winston-Salem, N.C., died October 27, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center.
She had resided at the Winston-Salem Rehab & Healthcare Center since May, 1999.
She was born in Forsyth County December 5, 1908 and was 90 years old.
She was the daughter of Lucian L. and Jetty Mahathe Swaim.
On October 29, 1927, she married William Alex (Son) Crotts, Jr., and there were no children born of this union.
He died July 20, 1990.
She worked at R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for 40 years.
She attended Sprague Street Baptist Church.
All her family predeceased her.
They were Francis W. Swaim, Mabel Swaim Seal, Olen Lee Swaim, Osher Victory Swaim, Velma Swaim Jessie, Verta Swaim Bates, and Virgil L. Swaim.
She is survived by a special friend, Allie Painter.
She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and Ernest F. Bates, Jr.
The family will receive friends from 7:00-8:00 p.m. on October 28, 1999 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held at 9:00 a.m., October 29, 1999 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
The service will be conducted by Reverend Glenn O. Murphy.

JORDAN
ASHEVILLE -- William Peter Jordan, infant son of Watson and Meghan Kirk Jordan, of 22 School Rd, Asheville, N.C., died Tuesday, October 26, 1999 in Charleston, S.C.
He was born September 16, 1999 in Asheville, N.C.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Paul Jordan, of the home; a sister, Caroline Jordan, of the home; his grandparents, Henry and Dyeann Jordan, of Winston-Salem; his grandmother, Eleanor Kirk, of Bethel, Conn.; and several aunts; uncles; and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 29 at St. Eugene's Catholic Church, Ashveville.
Rev. Francis Cancro will officiate.
Memorials may be made to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Memorial Mission Hospital, 509 Biltmore Ave., Asheville, N.C. 28801. Arrangements by Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro.

MILLS
Funeral services for Mr. Rodney Deon Mills, of 1820 Franciscan Terrace, Apt. J., will be held 3:00 p.m. today at Frances S. and Jerry C. Gilmore, Jr. Memorial Chapel, with Dr. Joseph Jones officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2:30-3:00 p.m., prior to the service.
The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from the home of his mother, Ms. Constance Mills, 100 Stagecoach Rd., Apt. 102-A, where the family may also be contacted.

ORRELL
LINWOOD -- Mr. Walter Alvin Orrell, Sr., 91, of 9630 S. N.C. Hwy 150, Linwood, N.C., the Churchland Community, died Wednesday, October 27, 1999 at Spencer Healthcare.
Mr. Orrell was born October 14, 1908 in Davidson County, to the late Grover Cleveland Orrell and Minnie Smith Orrell.
He was a lifelong resident of Davidson County, and retired as business agent of Local 440 of the United Textile Workers Union of America, North Carolina Finishing Company.
At Smith Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member, he was a member of the church choir, Senior Adult Men's Sunday School Class, and he served the church in various other capacities.
He was a charter member of the Churchland Volunteer Fire Department, where he was selected as Fireman of the Year in 1972 and 1978.
He was appointed to the Selective Service Appeals Board for the Middle Federal Judicial District of North Carolina by President Lyndon Johnson on March 3, 1967.
He was awarded a certificate of appreciation for his service to the Nation by Governor Robert W. Scott of North Carolina and President Richard Nixon.
Mr. Orrell was appointed member of the N.C. Employment Security Commission by Governor Robert W. Scott, having served from June, 1972 to October, 1976, and received a Resolution of Appreciation from the chairman of the commission.
He received a commemorative plaque in recognition of his devoted service to his union and the entire labor movement from Local 440, United Textile Workers of America on August 19, 1978.
Mr. Orrell was preceded in death by his wife, Dellie Orrell on January 21, 1999; his brother, Roy Orrell; his sisters, Mae Orrell Staley and Thelma Orrell Allred; and by his infant sister, Pauline Orrell. Surviving are his daughter, Norma O. Barnes, of Lexington; two sons, W. Alvin Orrell, Jr., of Churchland and David L. Orrell, of Clemmons; two sisters, Hazel Lanning, of Churchland and Dorothy Koontz, of Lexington; two brothers, Herman C. Orrell, of Churchland, and Howard O. Orrell, of Lexington; and seven grandchildren, Barbara Barnes, of Lexington, W. Alvin Orrell, III, of Salisbury, Robert Barnes, of Salisbury, Jennifer Orrell, of Linwood, Tina Orrell, of Winston-Salem, Ashley O. Schmidt, of Clemmons, and Brittany O. Loy, of Clemmons.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 29 at Smith Grove Baptist Church, conducted by Pastor Gregory Barefoot. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Orrell will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the service at Smith Grove Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 12:00-4:00 p.m. at the residence, and from 7:00-9:00 at Piedmont Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Smith Grove Baptist Church, 3462 Sowers Road, Lexington 27295 or to Higher Ground Baptist Church, 205 Will Snider Road, Linwood, N.C. 27299.

PADGETT
Mrs. Jeanne Allen Padgett, 81, of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center.
Mrs. Padgett was born June 23, 1918 in Lynchburg, Va., to Thomas and Emma Holmes Allen.
She was a retired communications specialist for the U.S. Government and a homemaker.
For many years, she was an active member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Lynchburg, Va., and after moving to Winston-Salem, was an active member of the Crickets Nest.
Mrs. Padgett was preceded in death by her husband, Harry C. Padgett.
Surviving are a son, Clay Padgett and daughter-in-law, Nan, of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Jenny and Emily Padgett and Susan and Lynn Stephens; and a sister, Emma Allen Fulcher, of Stoneville, N.C.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 29 at Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg, Va. by Rev. Lloyd Lipscomb. In lieu of flowers, donations are asked to be given to the American Red Cross-Hurricane Floyd Relief Fund.

ROMINGER
DANBURY -- Mr. Reuben E. Rominger, 67, of Danbury, N.C., died Monday, October 25, 1999 at his home.
He was born April 22, 1932 in Stokes County to Nathaniel and Sadie Rominger.
He is survived by one daughter, Kay Carter, of King; and one son, Eddie Rominger, of Madison.
The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Thursday at Madison Church of God, Hwy 311, Madison, N.C.
Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Chapel.

SMITH
ADVANCE -- Mrs. Annie Lee Johnson Smith, 74, of Advance, N.C., died Wednesday, October 27, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was born August 20, 1925 in Surry County, to Sidney W. (Dock) and Maggie Shelton Johnson.
Mrs. Smith was a member of Siloam Baptist Church.
She was vice-president of B & H Supply, where she had worked for 43 years.
She is survived by her husband, Ray J. Smith, of the home; one daughter, JoAnn Beeson and husband, Gayle; one grandson, Michael A. Beeson; and one brother, Edsel Johnson and wife, Margie.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 29 at 2:00 p.m. at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel by Rev. James W. Dockery, with burial to follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall.
The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 1900 S. Hawthorne Rd., Forsyth Medical Park, Suite 622, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103-3901.

SMITHERMAN
Mrs. Genella Gray Smitherman, 82, of 2523 Manchester Street, passed away Saturday, October 23, 1999 at Brian Nursing Center.
She was born on April 10, 1917 in Winston-Salem, N.C., the daughter of the late Harrison and Fannie Gray.
She was a graduate of Atkins High School, lived in Jersey City and New York, and later settled in Winston-Salem.
She was employed by R.J. Reynolds, and later, Taylor Brothers Tobacco Company, where she retired in 1985.
She was a faithful member of St. Stephens Missionary Baptist Church for 33 years.
Genella was a loyal member of the Missionary Circle for over 30 years.
She was co-chairman of the Emartus Executive Board Missionary Circle, a member of the Forsyth County Missionary Union, a member of the Dutiful Dozen Savings Club for 20 years, and a member of the Pastor's Aide Committee.
She shared her life and love with her late husband, George Smitherman; her eight children, Miriam Glenn (Theodore) of Ft. Washington, Md., Dr. Brenda Cherry (Charles) of Sharon, Mass., George Smitherman, Jr. (Brenda) of Clinton, Md., Sharon Blue of Winston-Salem, Vickie Brown (Robert) of Charlotte, N.C., Tony Smitherman (Sandy) of Greensboro, N.C., Michael Smitherman (deceased), and Kim Backman (Craig) of Winston-Salem; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her sisters, the late Christine Wilson (James) and Willie Mae Dunovant; nephews, James Wilson (Olivia) and Harold Ray Dunovant (Mary); nieces, Sherry Wilson Horton and Jerilyn Halle; numerous in-laws; and a host of other relatives and special friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1:00 p.m. from St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, with Reverend Joseph R. Sameuels officiating.
Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
The family visitation will be from 12:00-1:00 p.m. on Thursday at the church. (RUSSELL)
