SCOTT
EAST BEND -- Mr. J.D. Scott, 63, of 2205 Lace Knoll Road, died Sunday, October 17, 1999 at his home.
He was born February 15, 1936 in Yadkin County, to Herman B. and Minnie Leamon Scott.
Mr. Scott was a member of Union Cross Friends Meeting and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; a sister, Sara Stokes; and a daughter-in-law, Wendy Scott.
Surviving are two sons, Jackie (Diane) Scott and Doug (Gail) Scott, both of East Bend; one sister, Edith Shore, of Goldsboro; three brothers, Buford Scott, of Yadkinville, and Wade Scott and Roger Scott, both of East Bend; his ex-wife, Bertha Scott Billings, of East Bend; a good friend, Lorine Reece, of Hamptonville; and four grandchildren, Michael Scott, Kristy Scott, Dalton Scott, and Abby Scott.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, October 19 at 2:00 p.m. at Union Cross Friends Meeting by Rev. Jerry Gibbons, Rev. Jake Penley, and Rev. Johnny Shore.
The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. to lie in state.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 Monday evening, at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend.

STACK
Mr. George Thomas Stack, Jr., 71, of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, October 16, 1999 in Forsyth Medical Center.
Born June 19, 1928 to the late Mr. and Mrs. George Thomas and Mary Lee Hudson Stack, Sr., he was a member of Fairview Moravian Church.
He was special deputy of the Forsyth Sheriff's Department.
Following his retirement from Piedmont Airlines, Mr. Stack became a regular at Hanes Mall, known as the "Mayor of Hanes Mall."
Mr. Stack was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Plemmons Stack; sister, Betty Pace; and grandmother, Daisy Hudson.
Surviving are his son, Thomas F. "Chip" Stack, of Winston-Salem; three brothers, William Stack, and beloved friend, Wanda Honaker, Larry Stack and wife, Drema, and Kenneth Stack, all of Winston-Salem; and a sister, Linda Waston, and husband, Gary, of Winston-Salem.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 19 at Westlawn Gardens of Memory, with Rev. Neil Routh officiating. The family will receive friends Monday, October 18 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
THETFORD
Mrs. Viola Solange Thetford, 73, of Winston-Salem, died at her home Thursday, October 14, 1999.
She was the executive director of Group Homes of Forsyth, Inc. from 1979 until her retirement in 1991.
"Vi" was a strong advocate for the mentally-challenged and/or ill, and made great contributions to the quality of the lives of people with disabilities.
After her retirement, she continued to actively support people with disabilities through her involvement with the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, serving as president at one point.
She was treasurer for the Board of Directors of her condominium association, as well as head of the Bay Representatives, and a newsletter contributor.
She was also a member of her local bridge club.
"Vi" was a loving, caring, and supportive mother to her two sons, Mark Hansen, of Gansevoort, N.Y., and David Migneault, of Winston-Salem, and a devoted grandmother to her grandson, Lyle Hansen, also of Gansevoort, N.Y.
In addition, she leaves behind her sister, Alma Rands, of Portland, Ore.; her aunt, Peggy Saunders, of Deerfield Beach, Fla; her cousin, Norma Fraser, of Montreal, Canada; and countless friends and admirers.
A memorial service will be held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Winston-Salem, at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 19, by Rev. David Allred.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Group Homes of Forsyth, or the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.
TUTTLE
KING -- Mrs. Geneva Jones Tuttle, 86, of King, died Sunday morning, October 17, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center after an extended illness.
Mrs. Tuttle was born January 27, 1913 in Stokes County, to Henry Clay and Bertha Spainhour Jones.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in King.
Mrs. Tuttle was preceded in death by her husband, Grady R. Tuttle, in 1983.
Surviving are a daughter, Hope Hauser, and husband, Jimmy, of King; two grandchildren, Justin Hauser, of King, and MiKal Hauser, of Mebane; one great-granddaughter, Skyler Grogan, of Mebane; two sisters, Mrs. Frank (Hope) Rains and Mrs. Weeta Gay Alexander, both of King; and four nieces, Mrs. Kay Simmons, of King, Dr. Pamela Gill, of Charlotte, Mrs. Jean Umstead, of Beaufort, and Mrs. Hennie Rains, of Nags Head.
Graveside services will be conducted today at 2 p.m. in King Memorial Park, with Rev. Jack Borders and Rev. Paul Riggs officiating.

BARLOW
THURMOND -- Mr. James Odell Barlow, 75, of Thurmond, died Monday, October 18, 1999 at 3:05 a.m. at Elkin Healthcare.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday 2:00 p.m. at Mtn. Park United Methodist Church by Rev. Tony Bowman and Rev. Jim Darnell.
Burial will be in Crestwood Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Barlow was born in Wilkes County, May 27, 1924 to James Monroe and Nancy Staley Barlow.
He was a member of Mtn. Park United Methodist Church and a veteran of World War II, where he was in the Battle of the Bulge, received three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was retired from Zwick Corp.
Surviving are his wife, Irene Norman Barlow of the home; two daughters, Lisa Anice Barlow of Thurmond, and Lynn and Ronald Potter of Monroe; one son Larry and wife, Lucille Barlow of Rock Hill, S.C.; three grandchildren, Jason Gowen of Monroe, and Chris Barlow and Anita Manion both of Rock Hill, S.C.; and two brothers, Claude Barlow of Fremont, Calif., and Elmer Barlow of North Wilkesboro.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin.
BROWN
Mr. James Henry Brown, 57, of 3217 Old Greensboro Road, affectionately known as "BO ", passed away Monday, October 11, 1999 at his residence unexpectedly.
He was born July 9, 1941 in Winston-Salem, the son of Fred J. Brown and the late Clara W. Brown.
He was educated in the public schools of Forsyth County.
He was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Tobaccoville, N.C., and a former bus driver for TBM Luxury Coachline. "BO" was a member of the Macedonia TVPH Church of God, Inc. and a member of the Trustee Board.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Clara W. Brown; and a brother, Fred Brown, Jr.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his loving children, Teresa Brown, James S. (Jackie) Brown, of Brooklyn, N.Y., David L. (Johnnie) Brown and Charles Valentine of Orlando, Fla., Patrick B. (Teresa) Friday, Eric D. (Rose) Brown, Kanika L. Brown and Cellistine Brown, of Society Hill, S.C.; 18 grandchildren, Tekeyla, Teandola, Eric, Jr., Justin, Patrick, Tekenvila, Rashun, David, II, Dominique, Charles, Princess, Shakaun, Craig, Aquarias, Ka'deysha, Kelle, Angelica, and Lester; his father, Fred J. Brown, of Winston-Salem; five devoted sisters, Willie Mae Stowe, Thelma Russell, Magareen (Earnest) Wilkins, Sally (Robert) Bethea, and Tanya (Kenny) Dawkins, all of Winston-Salem; ten devoted brothers, Jake (Maxine) Brown, Benjamin (Barbara) Brown, Mike Brown, Ricky (Janice) Brown, Clevester Brown, Aldeen (Geraldine) Harvey, Monroe (Carolyn) Watkins, Rev. CARTER
KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Willie Mae Hendrix Carter, 92, of Bradford Village East, died Sunday, October 17, 1999.
Mrs. Carter was born January 1, 1907 in Summerville, Ga., to George Washington and Dovey Alexander Hendrix.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Albany Carter, Sr.; a daughter, Betty Swiger; and a son, Billy Wright. Surviving are two sons, Jimmy Wright, Sr. and his wife, Rachel, of Kernersville, and Jack Carter, Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, October 20, 1999 in the chapel of Family Funeral Care at 2:00 p.m.
Rev. Sybil Parks will officiate.

CARVER
YADKINVILLE -- Mr. Wayne Johnson Carver, 62, of Bowman Road, Yadkinville, died Monday, October 18, 1999 at his home.
He was born September 13, 1937 in Person County to the late Burley Johnson and Pearl Carver.
He worked at Unifi, Inc. since 1971, enjoyed the Unifi Bowling League, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Ann Hurdle.
Surviving are a daughter, Latisha Carver (Christopher Scott) Wood of Elkin; four sisters, Judy Wilson of Leesburg, N.C., Annie Lou Bose of Roxboro, N.C., Marie Whitfield of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., and Betty Jean Whitfield of Hurtles Mill, N.C.; one brother, Ricky Carver of Mebane; a step-daughter, Pamela Sharpe of Noma, W.Va.; a special friend, Pat Speer of Elkin; and his former wife, Brenda Loy of Burlington.
A funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Gentry Family Chapel conducted by Rev. John Brown.
A graveside service will be held 6:00 p.m. Thursday in the Cooper Family Cemetery in Prospect Hill, N.C.

DUNNAVANT
Mrs. Elsie Sale Dunnavant "MaMa", 93, of 2945 Reynolda Road, died unexpectedly Monday, October 18, 1999 at Independence Village.
Mrs. Dunnavant was a native of Amhurst, Virginia, where she was born April 27, 1906 to the late Edward and Vertie Sale.
She was a longtime member of Beck's Baptist Church and served faithfully as "choir mother" for many, many years.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend and will always be remembered for her delightful personality and delicious cooking.
Mrs. Dunnavant was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Wilson Dunnavant and a granddaughter, Shirley Allred.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Vivian Allred Dixon and Mrs. Betty Bumgardner both of Winston-Salem, and Mrs. Phyllis Johnson of Pfafftown; seven grandchildren, Gary Allred, Donnie Allred, Michael Bumgardner, Judy B. Holder, Kathy Conner, Ricky Johnson, and Karen Johnson; twelve great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Mrs. Eleanor Davis, Mrs. Susie Thornton, and Mrs. Corine Coffey all of Amhurst, Va., and Mrs. Grace Burford of Roanoke, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 20, 1999 at Beck's Baptist Church.
Dr. James J. Nelson will officiate.
Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park.

Mr. Henry Brown Hargis, 71, of Winston-Salem, passed away Monday, October 18, 1999 at his home.
He was born July 30, 1928 in Virginia, to Henry Brown and Roberta Ellis Hargis.
Mr. Hargis and had retired from McLean Trucking Company.
Surviving are his wife, Sarah "Sally" Hargis of the home; one daughter, Linda Register and husband, Jim of Winston-Salem; three sisters; and one brother.
A graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 20, 1999 at Parklawn Memorial Gardens by Chaplain Fred Moretz.
