HOPE
Mrs. Ocie Mae Blackmon Hope, 75, of 1265 Reynolds Forest Drive, passed away on Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at the Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. She was a native of Lancaster, S.C. and had lived in Winston-Salem, N.C. for fifty-seven years. She was of the Baptist faith and was a devoted homemaker, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Henry Hope, Sr. Mrs. Hope is survived by two daughters, Arleiva (Roscoe) Owens of Lancaster, S.C. and Janice (George) Powell of the home; two sons, Jack H. (Lettie) Hope, Jr. and David Glenn (Hilda) Hope all of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Thomy (Ruth) Blackmon of Lancaster, S.C. and Cherry Lee Blackmon of Detroit, Michigan; five sisters, Mardree Collins, Flossie Hall both of Lancaster, S.C., Almetta Johnson of New York, N.Y., Helen Blackmon of Upper Darby, Pa., and Beatrice Butler of Clamsbury, Pa.; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, October 17, 1999 at 3:00 p.m. from the Chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with Reverend James Lewis, Jr. officiating. IRION
ELKIN -- Mr. John Phillip Irion, 87, of 228 Oakwood Dr., died Thursday evening, October 14, 1999 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Elkin by Rev. Sanford Giles. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery. Mr. Irion was born in Paris, Tenn., December 3, 1911 to Phillip S. and Willie Cates Irion. He was a veteran of World War II, he retired from J.C. Penney Co., was an advertising consultant with THE TRIBUNE, and Radio Station WIFM. Mr. Irion was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Elkin Lions Club and was active in the Feed the Elderly program. Surviving are his wife, Jimmie Lamb of the home; two daughters, Phillis (Allston) Wayne of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. and Pam Irion of Yadkinville; two sons, John P. Irion of Leesville, S.C. and Dr. James (Rosemary) Irion of Hendersville, N.C.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, William Barton Irion of Tucker, Ga. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin.

HAMPTONVILLE -- Lindsey H. Long, 87, of Petty Road, passed away Friday, October 15, 1999 at Hoots Memorial Hospital. He was born March 3, 1912 in Yadkin County to the late Calvin and Ethel Cheek Long. Arrangements are incomplete with Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville serving the family.
MARTIN
WALNUT COVE -- Mr. James Martin, 73, of Walnut Cove, died Friday, October 15, 1999 at his residence. He was born June 21, 1926 to the late James Martin and Mary Ellen Stewart Martin. He was a mechanic with Roadway Express and a member of Troutdale Baptist Church in Troutdale, Va. Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his wife, Joann Plummer Martin in 1998 and eleven brothers and sisters. Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Stewart of North Wilkesboro; two sons, Tommy Martin of Walnut Cove and Eugene Martin of Galax, Va.; seven grandchildren, Misti Martin, Ashely Martin, Brian Martin, Brittany Martin, Marty Hill, Karen Simmons, and Joshua Martin; one great-grandchild, Cody Lee Simmons; one sister-in-law, Hope C. Martin of Walnut Cove; and a special nephew, Grady Throckmorton of Walnut Cove. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, October 17, 1999 at Troutdale Baptist Church, Troutdale, Va. Burial will be at Corinth Cemetery in Rugby, Va. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at Burroughs Funeral Home and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the church.

LELAND, N.C. -- Mrs. Mary Louise Snyder Masters, 65, of 108 Sandy Creek Rd., Leland, N.C., died Thursday, October 14, 1999 at Brunswick Community Hospital. She was born October 15, 1933 to William Albert Snyder and Katherine Miller Snyder. She was a homemaker and a member of Straight Way Baptist Church, High Point. Surviving are her husband, Thomas Mack Masters, Sr. of the home; three daughters, Katherine Taylor of Clemmons, Tammy Barchiesi of Woonsocket, R.I., and Zera Hensley, Leland, N.C.; six sons, Thomas Mack Masters, Jr. of Kernersville, Daniel Masters of Leland, William Master of Welcome, Jack Masters of Winston-Salem, Carl Masters of Leland, and Mackie Masters of Leland; one sister, Brenda Purkey of Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Willard Snyder of Leland; twenty-five grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Monday, October 18, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel, Kernersville conducted by L.C. Taylor, Minister, Immanuel Baptist Church, Clemmons, N.C. Burial will be at Mt. Gur Cemetery. PHELPS
Miss Ethel Sarah Phelps, 100, died Friday, October 15, 1999 at Meadowbrook Terrace of Davie. She was born December 1, 1898 in Forsyth County to the late Uriah Alvin and Adelia Faw Phelps. Miss Phelps spent most of her life in Clemmons. She was a member of Muddy Creek Church of Christ. Surviving are eleven nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday at First Christian Church of Clemmons (formerly Muddy Creek Church of Christ) by Ollis Baggett, Minister. Miss Phelps will lie instate at the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
ROBERTSON
Mr. Roy Lee Robertson, 88, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, October 15, 1999 at his home. He was born March 3, 1911 in Davie County to Walter Lee Robertson, Sr. and Nettie Russell Robertson. Mr. Robertson was a member of Hope Moravian Church. He was retired from the Atlantic Greyhound Buslines after 30 years of service and helped organize the Local Chapter of Retired Greyhound Drivers Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iva M. Robertson in 1998. Surviving are two daughters, Mary Ellen Robertson of Winston-Salem and Linda Reece and husband, Gary of Lewisville; one son, Ronnie Robertson and wife, Sharon of East Bend; an adopted daughter, Bonnie Robertson of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Jill Stokes, David Robertson, Bradley Reece, Jeffrey Robertson, and Mathan Robertson; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter Lee Robertson, Jr. of Troutman; a number of nieces and nephews; and many good friends. Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Hope Moravian Church with Rev. Galen Hahn and Rev. Norman Byerly officiating. STRICKLAND
Mr. Jerry Lee Strickland, 53, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, October 15, 1999 at Moses Cone Hospital. He was born in Knox County, Tennessee to Samuel Eli and Bertha Helton Strickland. Mr. Strickland served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam Era and was employed with Wolf Brothers Steel. He was a member of Grace Baptist Temple. Mr. Strickland lived most of his life in Greensboro. He was preceded in death by his father. Surviving are his wife, Patricia Martin Strickland of the home; his mother of Asheboro; a son, Clinton Strickland of Whitsett, N.C.; a daughter, Wendy Strickland of Greenville, S.C.; a step-son, Marty Stanfield of the home; a grandson, Dusty Strickland; two sisters, Mrs. Tammy Spaugh of Asheboro and Mrs. Shelia Bryant of Randleman; and a brother, Glen Strickland of Winston-Salem. YADKINVILLE -- Mr. Dewey Lee Todd, 100, of 2945 Old Stage Road, passed away Friday morning, October 15, 1999 at the Yadkin Nursing Care Center. He was born June 8, 1899 to the late I.A. and Lillie Shermer Todd. Mr. Todd was a retired farmer. He was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church in Yadkin County for 86 years. Mr. Todd was preceded in death by his family of twelve and sisters; his wife, Velam P. Todd in 1994; and his son, Wayne Todd in 1999. WILKESBORO -- Mrs. Esther Greer Laws Walker, 87, of Gunter's Hill Road, Boomer, widow of Crobie Donald Laws and John Wiley Walker, died Friday, October 15, 1999 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Graveside services will be held Sunday 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Cemetery with the Rev. Kevin Huffman officiating. Mrs. Walker was born July 27, 1912 in Watauga County to Calvin and Sarah Ann Watson Greer. She was a member of Hinshaw Street Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by one son, Billy Laws. Surviving are six daughters, Geneva Higgins of Millers Creek, Joyce Johnson of Moravian Falls, Lois Wyrick of West Jefferson, Arlee Livingston of Hudson, Dot Yale of Yadkinville, and Cynthia Huffman of Boomer; two sons, Wayne Laws of Statesville and Harold Laws of Hamptonville; fourteen grandchildren; and twenty-three great-grandchildren.
