PENDERGRASS
PFAFFTOWN -- Mrs. Sena Mae Neely Pendergrass, 78, of Pfafftown, died Thursday morning, October 14, 1999 at the home of her daughter, Alva.
She was born February 7, 1921 in Forsyth County, to David H. Neely, Sr. and Dina Golding Neely.
Mrs. Pendergrass was of the Baptist Faith and was preceded in death by her husband, Alva H. Pendergrass also on October 14, 1984.
Surviving are a daughter, Alva Mae Freeman and her husband, Lewis of Mocksville; a son, Harrison Pendergrass and his wife, Pamela of Winston-Salem; a brother, David H. Neely, Jr. of Nevada; five grandchildren, Lewis Freeman, Jr., Sterling Freeman, Wendy Pope and her husband, Kevin, Jason Pendergrass and his wife, Amy, and Stacy Pendergrass; and two great-grandchildren, Tori and Ashlea Pope.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Davie County, P.O. Box 848, Mocksville, N.C. 27028.

PRIDDY
SUMMERFIELD -- James "Earl" Priddy.
After being terminally ill for the past several months, Earl, 85 yrs. old, went home to be with his Lord Wednesday, October 13, 1999.
He was employed by P. Lorillard Company as an oiler on second shift until his retirement in 1984.
Since that time, he has enjoyed fishing, hunting, beekeeping, and gardening.
Surviving are his wife of nearly 66 years, Lorene Flinchum Priddy; his daughter, Mildred "Millie Priddy Barrow and husband, Ted; a son, Kenneth and wife, Pat all of Summerfield; four granddaughters, Debra Wood, Vickie Cole, Tammy Barrow, and Susan Roberson; two great-grandchildren, Joey and Sarah; one brother, Troy Priddy of Westfield; and a sister, Murphy "Ann" Whitaker of Winston-Salem.
He was the son of deceased parents, Frank and Minnie Jackson Priddy.
The family expresses sincere thanks to two very special people, sister-in-law, Mary Lee Mabe and special friends and like a second daughter, Shirley Randleman who both loved and cared for him during this time.
Funeral services will be held 7:00 p.m. Friday at Brooke Funeral Home Chapel in Stokesdale.
The family will receive friends and relatives immediately following the service and other times at the home, 8085 Witty Road. Burial will be Saturday, 11:00 a.m. in the Hillsdale Primitive Baptist Cemetery on Scalesville Road, Summerfield.

STURDIVANT
Mr . James Rufus Sturdivant, Jr., 37, of 1353 Calvert Drive, Winston-Salem, died October 11, 1999 at WFU/Baptist Medical Center.
He was born September 26, 1962 to the late James R. Sturdivant, Sr. and Evang. Alma E. Sturdivant.
He was employed with the City of Winston-Salem, Park and Recreation.
Surviving in addition to his mother are three children, Antonio D. Sloan, Krishaun Sloan, and Lajessica Sloan, all of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Shirley (Paul) Jackson of Winston-Salem, and Alma Marie Sturdivant of the home; maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Fowler of Winston-Salem; paternal grandmother; Mamie Sturdivant of Winston-Salem; a devoted niece, Sophia Jackson; and a devoted nephew, Antonio Jackson both of Winston-Salem.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. October 16, 1999 at Frances S. and Jerry C. Gilmore, Jr. Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. J.D. McCallum.
Burial will be in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1 p.m. before the service.

TATE
MOUNT AIRY -- Mr. Robert Thomas (Tommy) Tate, 50, of 307 Imogene Church Road, Mount Airy, husband of Carolyn Sawyers Tate, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at Fort Sanders Loudon Medical Center in Loudon, Tenn.
Mr. Tate was born in Forsyth County, September 10, 1949, son of Clarence Coleman and Lydia Sechrist Tate.
He was a truck driver with Dobson Trucking, where he was known by his co-workers as "Fat Cat".
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Sawyers Tate of the home; his parents, Clarence and Lydia Sechrist Tate of Mount Airy; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Nancy Sehen and Shirley Bowman, both of Pilot Mountain, and Mildred and Leo Cave of Mount Airy; three brothers and sister-in-law, Bill and Brenda Tate of Mount Airy, Bobby and Ruth Sehen of Greenville, S.C., and Jimmy and Kathleen Sehen of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Tate was preceded in death by one brother, Freddie Sehen.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 16, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy.
The service will be conducted by Rev. Danny Culler, Rev. Joe Atkins, and Rev. Jimmy Slate, with burial in the Mount Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy, and at other times at the home of Glenn Sawyers, 111 Ashley Drive, Mount Airy, or at the home of Clarence and Lydia Tate, 593 George Chandler Road, Mount Airy.

BENSON
Dr. Maggie Earl Friday Benson, daughter of the late Earl and Minnie Speaks Friday, passed away recently at Forsyth Medical Center. She was a native of the city and was educated in the public school systems of Elizabeth City, New Jersey, and Winston-Salem.
She was a graduate of Winston-Salem Teachers College, N.C.A.&T. and did further study at the University of North Carolina.
Benson taught school in the states of Virginia, and Greensboro, N.C., she was also proprietor of the Mother and Daughter Kindergarten, and was Chairman of the Boards of Directors at Benson's Music Studio and F&B Travel Consultants.
Benson was employed as a former reporter with the Winston-Salem Journal and Sentinel, "Activities of Colored People".
At Zion Tabernacle FBH Church, she served as Minister of Music.
She also served as pianist for sixty years with the Victory Prayer Band Singers who performed throughout the United States and abroad.
Benson was a former member of the Board of Directors at Teamers Educational Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Surviving are her husband, Samuel Setzer Benson; two daughters, VirNessa D. and Minnie E. Benson; a devoted cousin-in-law, Florence Ceasar Rice; a devoted nephew, Carl Miller, Jr.; a devoted cousin, Eula B. Colter and Family; sisters-in-law, Beatrice B. Benson of the city, and Catherine Washington and Virginia Welsh of Philadelphia, Pa.; a foster son, Dr. H.W. Parker; six foster grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 16, 1999 at 3:00 p.m. from the Zion Tabernacle FBH Church with Rev. L.V. Davis officiating.
Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.
The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service at the church.
The family may be contacted at the home and the cortege will assemble and leave from the residence at 2:00 p.m. Saturday. (HOOPER)

BOLES
Mr. Oscar Franklin Boles, Jr., 72, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, October 15, 1999.
Surviving are one sister, Barbara Jane Gorsuch of San Diego, California.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 16, 1999 at Gardens of Memory, Walkertown.
Family may be contacted at the home of Mrs. Rachel Mabe, 5980 Belews Creek Road, Walkertown, N.C. 27051.

CATHEY
PINNACLE -- Juanita Newton Cathey, 86, of Sam Scott Road, passed away on Friday, October 15, 1999 at her son's residence.
Services are to be held on Monday, October 18, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Clinton, S.C., with interment to follow at the Pinelawn Memory Gardens, Clinton, S.C.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Surry, and Yadkin Co., 1326 N. Main Street, Mt. Airy, N.C. 27030.
Cox-Needham Funeral Services of Pilot Mountain, are in charge of the funeral arrangements.

DENNY
PILOT MOUNTAIN -- Mrs. Nina Mae Venable Denny, 96, widow of Mr. Howard Denny of Meadowbrook Manor, Clemmons, N.C. (formerly of Pilot Mountain, N.C.), died Friday morning, October 15, 1999 at Meadowbrook Manor.
Mrs. Denny was born in Stokes County, January 24, 1903 to David Dalton and Spencer Slawter Venable.
She was a homemaker, a former member of the Pilot Mountain Home Demonstration Club, and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are two nephews, Charles Holman Venable of Clemmons, and H.D. Venable of Pilot Mountain.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, October 16, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cox-Needham Funeral Home Chapel in Pilot Mountain, N.C., by Brother Don Collins.
Burial will be in the Pilot Mountain City Cemetery.

ESSEX
LEWSVILLE -- Pamela Sue Doub Essex, 49, died at her home Thursday, October 14, 1999.
She was born in Wisnton-Salem, to Harold L. and Metzel Binkley Doub on November 12, 1949.
She was a free-lance artist.
Surviving are her parents, two sisters, Marcia Carter and Katen Barnes; and her maternal grandmother, Nora T. Holder.
A memorial service will be held at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel 5:00 p.m. Saturday conducted by Denton Landon.
The family will receive friends after the service.

HECK
Mrs. Dorothy Myers Heck, 71, of 3955 High Point Road, Lot 19, died Thursday, October 14, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was born September 26, 1928 in McDowell County, West Virginia, to Duran and Clyde Handy Myers and moved to Winston-Salem, when she was 18 years of age.
Mrs. Heck was retired from Kaiser-Roth.
She was a loving mother and grandmother to two sons, James (Jimmy Richard Brown and his fiancee', Kimberly Cole of the home and Walter Louis Brown, Jr. and his fiancee', Marty Livengood of High Point; one daughter, Marsha Brown Spillman and husband, Dennis of Rural Hall; five grandchildren, Eric, Josh, Jennifer, Jessee, and Adam; two step-grandchildren, Jason and Dixie; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Bob Myers of West Virginia; one sister-in-law, Mary Myers of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by Rev. Gary Styers.
The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Liberty Baptist Church, 1548 Old Hollow Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27105.
