CHANDLER
GREENSBORO -- Mr. William Edward Chandler, 77, died on Thursday, October 14, 1999, at Moses Cone Extended Care Center, after a lengthy illness. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, at Vandalia Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park. Bill was a devoted Christian and family man. Born the eleventh of thirteen children to the late Charles and Edith Chandler in Nemaha, Nebraska, he attended Peru State Teachers College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and a flight attendant supervisor for Eastern Airlines in New York, before entering the airline catering business. In 1966, he and his partners, C.F. Houglan and W.R. Ramsey, started Triad Catering Company in Greensboro, N.C., which was the sole provider of catering service at Piedmont Triad International Airport until his retirement. He served as a Deacon and Elder at Vandalia Presbyterian Church. Bill was the beloved Husband of his wife of 43 years, Dorothy, who spent the last three years in faithful and tireless care of him. He was the father of four daughters who adored him and cherished the joy he brought to their lives: Lauren C. Beasley and her husband, Dave of Greensboro, Lynette C. Matthews-Murphy and her husband, Lynn of Winston-Salem, Cynthia C. Mason and her husband, Merrill of Raleigh, and Melissa C. Dowell and her husband, Matthew of Jamestown. The lights of his life were his eight grandchildren, Brad, Todd, and Amy Beasley, Craig and Vance Matthews, Ellen and Chandler Mason, and Erin Dowell. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Chandler. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, in the parlor of Vandalia Presbyterian Church. COOPER
Mr. James Robert Cooper of 3010 N. Claremont Avenue, was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to the late James Robert, Sr. and Sarah Cooper. He was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, where he was a member of Canaan Baptist Church. Mr. Cooper was a retired painter of Rakestraw Painting Co. He departed this life on Tuesday, October 12, 1999, at his residence unexpectedly. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 16, 1999 at 1:00 p.m., from the Canaan Baptist Church, with Dr. W.E. Brannon officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service at the church. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of the home, Betty Cooper; six daughters, Sharon (William) Dillard, Rita (James) Scott, Cardias (Lawrence) Burns all of Winston-Salem, N.C., Shirleen Cooper, Sarah Ann Cooper, and Yonnie Cooper, all of New Jersey; two sons, Melvin Cooper of New York, and James Cooper of New Jersey; twenty-nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; a devoted uncle, Cleo Robbins of Winston-Salem; a devoted cousin, James Jenkins of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends. GRAHAM
ELKIN -- Hattie Mae Norman Graham, 95, died in Birmingham, Alabama, on October 10, 1999.
A member of First United Methodist Church, Mrs. Graham was Elkin's Mother of the Year in 1963. She served the community as a registered nurse for 35 years, beginning her career as a part of the initial staff of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Graham, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Arthur Norman, was married to Robert Sheffey Graham, who died in 1982. She is survived by three children, Robert Graham, Jr., Helen Graham Yarboro, and Norman Graham; seven grandchildren, Robert Graham, Patrick Graham, Chris Yarboro, Jonathan Yarboro, Anna Kate Yarboro Donavan, Ashley Graham, and Damien Graham and one great-grandson, Graham Yarboro also survive her, as well as a son and daughters-in-law. Extended family includes her sister-in-law, Mary Norman, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. A graveside committal service for the family will precede the memorial service at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, 1999, at First United Methodist Church. The family will visit with friends in the church parlor, following the service. HAIRSTON
Ms. Robin Janice Jones Hairston, 42, of 2432 White Horne Drive, Kernersville, N.C., departed this life on Monday morning, October 11, 1999 at the High Point Regional Hospital after an extended period of illness. Robin was born on March 17, 1957 in Forsyth County, to Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Jones, Sr. She graduated in 1975 from East Forsyth Senior High School. She was a member of the Oak Springs Church of Stokesdale, N.C. and was a former employee of Precision Fabrics in Jamestown, N.C. until her health began to decline. She is survived by three sons, Tommy L. (Rebecca) Jones, Terrell D. Jones, and Antionne L. Hairston all of Winston-Salem, N.C.; five grandchildren; her parents, Mary and Jesse Jones of Walkertown, N.C.; a special devoted friend, Lorenzo Lyerly; three sisters, Cynthia McIntyre, Brenda Hairston (Brian) all of Kernersville, N.C., and Kenya S. Jones of King, N.C.; three brothers, Dennis (Shirley) Jones of Walnut Cove, Gordon (Jacqueline) Jones, Sr., and Rev. Jesse (Veronica) Jones, Jr., all of Winston-Salem; one aunt, Mrs. Shirley (Wheeler) Jones of Walkertown; a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and a very special friend, Georgianne Coletrane of Walkertown; and many other relatives and friends. HEMRIC
HAMPTONVILLE -- Mr. James Ralph Hemric, 84, of Simcox Rd., Hamptonville, died Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at Yadkin Nursing Center. He was born to the late George Marcus McClain Hemric and Rosie Gambill Hemric. Mr. Hemric was a retired Truck Driver. On August 10, 1934, he married Lillian Gladys Hemric, who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was one son, James Wayne Hemric; three brothers; and three sisters. Surviving, are two sons, Donald L. (Ellen) Hemric of Hamptonville, and Billy Gray Hemric of New Castle, Delaware; two sisters, Bonnie Adkins of Elkin, and Maxine (Milo) Barker of Lexington, N.C.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Betty Simcox of Hamptonville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 16, 1999, at Gentry Family Chapel, Hwy. 601 N. Yadkinville, conducted by the Rev. Roger Elmore. KINZER
Mr. Frank Sylvester Kinzer, 67, of 1166 Morton Street, Camden, New Jersey, and formerly of Winston-Salem, N.C., expired on Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at the Woodland Care Hospice Center in Camden, New Jersey, following an extended period of illness. He was a retired employee of the Plaster and Cement International Local 8 of Philadelphia. Mr. Kinzer was preceded in death by his father, Jasper Frank Kinzer. He leaves to embrace his memories his mother, Mrs. Lubertha M. Kinzer of Mt. Airy, N.C.; his wife, Dorothy W. Kinzer of Camden, N.J.; two daughters, Tiffany Kinzer of the home and Frankie Gaither of Salisbury, N.C.; four sons, Frank Jasper Kinzer of Fayetteville, N.C., Samuel Kinzer of Biloxi, Mississippi, Michael Kinzer of Winston-Salem, and Tyress Gaither (Wanda) of Salisbury; six step-children, Edward and Bruce Vanderveer, Lois Norton (Baron), Mary, Floyd, and Kevin Williamson of Camden, N.J.; one brother, James A. Kinzer (Brenda) of Winston-Salem; four sisters, Doris Harris of Mt. Airy, Robbie DeLapp, Ernestine Dillard, and Mildred Garris Tuttle (Mack) of Winston-Salem; several grand- and great-grandchildren; also a very special and devoted friend, Ernestine August of Camden; and a host of other special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who loved him dearly. Daphne Ethel Eller Leonard, 73, widow of George Alan Leonard, died October 13, 1999 in Lansing, N.C., after an extended illness. She earned her B.S. and Master's degrees in Home Economics and later her Master's of Library Sciences at University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She began her career in education by working with the N.C. State Dept. of Instruction. She later worked as the librarian at First Baptist Church in Greensboro, and retired in 1994 as the Media Specialist at Ashe Central High School. She is survived by three daughters, Theresa Leonard Lewis, Nancy Leonard Schuder, and Elizabeth Leonard Paulson and seven grandchildren. A sister, Laura Nan Wasserman of Lansing; a brother, Morris Eller of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews also survive her. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 16, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Jefferson United Methodist Church in Jefferson, N.C. YADKINVILLE -- Dollie Ashby Martin, 69, of Yadkinville, N.C., formerly of Roanoke, departed this earth to be with her Lord and Eternal Father, and there she reunited in Heaven with her first husband, John David Ashby; her son, Michael Rae Ashby; he parents, Henry and Nellie Weaver; and her siblings. Dollie was employed with and retired from Tultex Mills in Roanoke. Waiting to meet Dollie in that Heavenly home is her husband, Lester Martin; sons and daughters, Larry David Ashby and Vickie Stafford Ashby, Victoria Ashby Jones and John Jones; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and three special friends, Carmen Dohn, Effie Fierce, Wanda Doss and families from Yadkinville, N.C. A celebration of Dollie's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 15, 1999, at the Lotz Vinton Chapel, with services being conducted by her niece, The Rev. Deborah Barnard and Carmen Dohn will be honoring Dollie with her beautiful voice.
MASSEY
Mr. Roman Massey, 52, of 1831 North Dunleith Avenue, passed away on Saturday, October 9, 1999 at the Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home following a period of illness. He was born on March 28, 1947 in Manhattan, N.Y., to the late Claudia and Frank Massey. He was a native of Bronx, N.Y., where he attended and graduated from the local high school and had lived in Winston-Salem, N.C., since 1977. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War in November, 1968. He was an employee of Merita Bakery for 15 years, Lee Jeans for 3 years, and more recently at the Microtel Hotel. He is survived by his faithful wife of 14 years, Melba Penn Massey; three daughters, Juryl Massey of Bronx, N.Y., Vernice Massey of Los Angeles, Calif., and Sherril Penn of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three sons, Roman D. and Alyn Massey of Bronx, N.Y., and Tyreah Penn, Sr.; six grandchildren; one sister, Karen Lewis of Charlotte, N.C.; his mother-in-law, Annie M. Penn McRae (James); six aunts; six uncles; three devoted brothers-in-law, Harold (Callie), Michael, and Byron (Sonya) Penn; one devoted sister-in-law, Pamela Penn; a devoted friend, Jeannie Mason; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. WALKERTOWN -- Mr. Raymond "Ray" Lee Pack, 81, of Walkertown, died Thursday October 14, 1999 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Pack was born on April 7, 1918 in Norfolk, Virginia, a son of the late Walter Lee and Maude F. McCann Pack Thomas. He was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church, a veteran of the Merchant Marines, a retired Construction Superintendent of Flour Construction, and ran the Roadside Drive Inn in Walkertown, from 1956-1961. On July 15, 1946, he married the former Iva Shropshire who survives him of the home. Other survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Edith P. Reid (Nolan) of Wallburg; two brothers, Howard Charles Pack of San Diego, Calif., and Wiley Hubert Pack of Thomasville, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Lee Pack and James Walter Pack and two sisters, Virginia P. Miller and Pauline P. Baugus. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 16, 1999, at Foster Funeral Home, with Dr. Bobby Roberson and Dr. Brooks L. Hunt officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
