SMITH
Mr. Joseph Franklin Smith, 63, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at the Brian Center.
He was born Jan. 27, 1937, in Forsyth County, to Redden and Jessie Culler Smith.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and three sisters.
He is survived by two sons, Joseph Lee Smith of Haywood County, and Roger Dale Smith and wife Kim of Kings Mountain; six grandchildren; three brothers, Redden E. Smith and wife Velner of Winston-Salem, Virgil L. Smith and wife Jean of Tacoma, Wash., and Ernest Edward Smith and wife Mary of Norfolk, Va.; and three sisters, Virginia Smith Schmitz of Winston-Salem, Janice Gillette and husband Andrew of Michigan, and Carolyn Sebastaino and husband David of New York.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Gardens of Memory, Walkertown, with the Bishop Bobby Cranfill officiating.

SOUTHARD
Mrs. Margaret Templeton Southard, 78, of 806 Oak Summit Road, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Southard was born June 4, 1922, to Shirley Braxton and Loray Stroud Templeton. She lived in Winston-Salem, her entire life and was a member of the old Ogburn Memorial United Methodist Church, which is now Faith United Methodist Church. She was also a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Southard retired from Wake Forest University as a librarian after 30 years of service. She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Kay Southard and Kathy S. Blankenship, both of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Chrissie, Bobbie, Loray, Sean and Brandon; and a great-grandchild, Dakota. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gene Richardson. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. STAFFORD
KERNERSVILLE -- Mrs. Vera Stafford Stafford, 109, of 1720 Highway 66 S., died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at her residence.
A graveside funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, at Bunker Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Stafford was of the Methodist faith.
She was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She enjoyed gardening and flowers.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Stafford, and two daughters, Helen Idol and Blake Teague.
She is survived by seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, at Hanes-Lineberry, Pierce Chapel in Kernersville.
TUCKER
Mr. James Elton Tucker, 73, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, October 13, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after an extended illness. He was born in High Point, N.C., on May 25, 1927, to Jesse Elton and Linnie Beane Tucker, and grew up in Montgomery County, N.C. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Tucker worked 25 years in the television broadcasting industry, working both at WFMY-TV in Greensboro, and WXII-TV in Winston-Salem. He appeared for 13 years as "Pecos Pete" on WFMY-TV's Old Rebel and Pecos Pete Show. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Bobbie Magness Tucker of the home; two sons, Steven Tucker of the home and Scott Tucker and wife Suzanne of Greensboro, N.C.; a grandson, Samuel Tucker; and his father-in-law, Edgar Magness, of the home. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, at Lakeview Cemetery in Greensboro, with Chaplain Rennie Adcock officiating. MOCKSVILLE -- Mrs. Thelma Poplin Turrentine, 86, of Cane Mill Road, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at her residence. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethel United Methodist Church, with Dr. S.B. Warner officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Eaton Funeral Home. Mrs. Turrentine was born Aug. 4, 1914, in Davie County, to the late John and Lola Summers Poplin. She had been employed at R.J. Reynolds and later, Monleigh Garment Co. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sisters, Marie Chappell of Salisbury, and Kathleen Hatley of Mocksville; a special niece, Pamela Hendrix of the home; and seven nieces and nephews.

KING -- Mrs. Rhumell Coins Taylor, 70, wife of Walter Kenneth Taylor, of 1737 Marshall Smith Road, King, N.C., died Thursday, October 14, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. Mrs Taylor was born in Stokes County, October 3, 1929 to Willie Raymond and Ruby Gertrude King Coina. She was retired from Lucia, Inc. and was of the Primitive Baptist faith. Surviving are her husband, Walter Kenneth Taylor of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Harry Morris of Winston-Salem, Carol Hunter of Winston-Salem, and Trina and Bob Roberts of Tobaccoville; five grandchildren, Trey Morris, Kenny Morris, Jamie Tuttle, Justin Roberts, and Taylor Roberts; one brother, J.B. Coins of Winston-Salem; and one niece and husband, Rockie Currie and Tim of Winston-Salem. Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Marion. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morning, October 16, 1999 at 11:00 a.m., at Rock House Primitive Baptist Church, by Elder Vance Jones, Elder J.H. Keaton, and Elder Scottie Marshall. Our loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Bertha Mabel Teague-Strait, 79, went home to be with her Lord on October 13, 1999, after an extended illness. She was born February 3, 1920 in Cleveland County, N.C., to James Henry and Viola Hopper Teague. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Warren Strait; two sisters, Gladys Sipes and Mae Tucker; and two brothers, William Teague and Ray Teague. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Peggy Smith Pittman (Richard) of Hildebran, N.C., Palmer L. "Bobby" Smith (Rita) of Arcadia, N.C., Patricia Smith Fishel (Roger), and Paulette Smith Shaffer (Denny) both of Winston-Salem. Her love for her eight grandchildren, Chuck, Chris, Cheryl, Palmer, Kim, Donna, Brian, and Amanda; and seven great-grandchildren, Ashley, Devon, David, Brandy, Dakota, Kasey, and Taylor will never be forgotten. Also surviving Bertha are her four brothers and two sisters, Junior Teague (Evelyn), Hettie Yoder, and Catherine Hampton all of Hickory, Clyde Teague (Peggy), Jimmy Teague (Sis), and Marshall Teague (Carol), all of Hildebran; and many caring and loving nieces and nephews; and the father of her children, Gene F. STONEVILLE -- Mrs. Lillian Ada Lawson Tilley, 89, of 3234 N.C. 135, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999 at Brian Center in Eden. The service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999 at Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Tilley was born to the late Jim and Zudie Hicks Lawson and was a member of Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church, Danbury. She is preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Tilley and son, Bernie Tilley. She is survived by her son, Vilas Tilley of Stoneville; one brother, Swanson Lawson of Greensboro, four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mrs. Tilley's body will be taken to her home, Friday at 2:00 p.m., where the family will be receiving friends. The body will be placed in Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church, Saturday at 1:00 p.m., where she will lie in-state until the funeral hour. Brooke Funeral Home in Stokesdale, is in charge of arrangements.
BENSON
Dr. Maggie Earl Friday Benson, daughter of the late Earl and Minnie Speaks Friday, passed away recently at Forsyth Medical Center. She was a native of the city and was educated in the public school systems of Elizabeth City, New Jersey, and Winston-Salem. She was a graduate of Winston-Salem Teachers College, N.C.A.&T. and did further study at the University of North Carolina. Benson taught school in the states of Virginia, and Greensboro, N.C., and was proprietor of the Mother and Daughter Kindergarten. She was Chairman of the Board of Directors at Benson's Music Studio and F&B Travel Consultants. Benson was employed as a reporter with the Winston-Salem Journal and Sentinel from the late 1930's-1960, assisting with the column "Activities of Colored People" and she was a former member of the Democratic Party. At Zion Tabernacle FBH Church, she served as Minister of Music. Surviving are her husband, Samuel Setzer Benson; two daughters, VirNessa D. and Minnie E. Benson; a devoted cousin-in-law, Florence Ceasar Rice; a devoted nephew, Carl Miller, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Beatrice B. Benson of the city and Catherine Washington of Philadelphia, Pa.; six foster grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 16, 1999 at 3:00 p.m. from the Zion Tabernacle FBH Church, with Rev. L.V. Davis officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. Dr. Albert B. Broadous of 2304 Cross Street, Little Rock, Arkansas, passed away on Friday, October 8, 1999 at the Baptist Medical Center, Little Rock, Ark. He was born on February 9, 1904 to the late Reverend Zechrah and Mattie T. Broadous in Texarkana, Ark. He had lived in Little Rock, for 74 years and attended Arkansas Baptist College, earning a high school diploma in 1934 from Philander Smith College. He was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Human Letters from Arkansas Baptist College and received other honors from his church community and the state of Arkansas. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mildred Willis Broadous; a devoted daughter, Marion B. Simpson of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two loving granddaughters, Sharon Simpson of Southfield, Mich., and Valerie Simpson of Winston-Salem, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Obrien, Ebonie, and Alexander Walker all of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one sister, Lee Omira Clegg; one brother, Reverend John H. Broadous both of Compton, California; and other relatives and friends.
