Joe Reid White, Sr.
Joe Reid White, Sr., 69, of Lexington, died May 27 [2002] at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons.
He was born March 26, 1933, in Davidson County, to George White and Mary Byerly White.
He was retired from Douglas Battery and was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Poplin White; and a brother, James W. White.
Surviving are three daughters, Twyla Dawne White Everhart and Cherita Denise White Huffman, both of Davidson County, and Jo Anna White Collier and husband Mike of Davie County; a son, Joe R. White, Jr. and wife Rebecca of Rowan County; two sisters, Hazel W. Burkhart and Geraldine W. Tussey, both of Davidson County; seven grandchildren, Summer S. James and husband Scott, Karen Sides, Megan Collier, Brandie Huffman, Major Collier, Courtney Huffman and Dustin White; and two great-grandchildren, Taylor Dawne-Marie James and Hunter Scott James.
Funeral services were held at Victory Baptist Church in Clemmons, with Rev. Mike Duffield officiating.
Benjamin F. Price
Benjamin F. "Shockey" Price, 91, of Clemmons, died May 29 [2002] at Meadowbrook Terrace of Davie.
He was born March 23, 1911, in Price's Fork, Va.
He was a member of the U.S. Army during World War II and the VFW.
He was the meat department manager of Kroger in Blacksburg, for 19 years and in Pearisburg, Va., at Food Fair for 11 years.
He was an eight-year resident of Warm Hearth Village in Blacksburg, Va.
He was a member of the Kitchen Kettle Band and regional and state Senior Olympics for many years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Ruth D. Price; and three sisters, Francis Maddox, Georgia "Tootie" Miller and Hattie Robertson.
Surviving are his daughters, Martha P. Montgomery of Dunwoody, Ga., Mary Williams and husband Van of Madisonville, Ky., and Jane Price Huff and husband Lonnie of Clemmons; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Blacksburg Christian Church, in Blacksburg, Va., with Rev. Johnny Loughridge officiating.
Burial followed at Snider Cemetery in Price's Fork.
Ann McLane Lemler
Ann McLane Lemler, 37, of Clemmons, died at her home May 30 [2002] after fighting a seven-year battle with ovarian and breast cancer.
She was born November 11, 1964, in Memphis, Tenn., to John William McLane and Jean Garner Striegel.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, and was retired from Amp, Inc., to pursue her interest in volunteer and charity work.
Her father, John William McLane, preceded her in death.
Surviving are her husband, Darrel Alan Lemler, and her mother, Jean Striegel.
A memorial service was held at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Russ Ritchel officiating.
Mae Belle Butner Mabe
Mae Belle Butner Mabe, 80, of Pfafftown, died at the home of her daughter June 3 [2002].
She was born in Forsyth County, February 16, 1922, to Alvis Eugene Butner and Irene Melton Butner.
She worked at Hill's Lexington Barbecue, Inc. for several years as a waitress.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert Luther Hicks; and her second husband, Roy Mabe.
Surviving are three daughters, Wilma Jordan of Germanton, Carolyn Beeson of Winston-Salem, and Georgia Ann Butterfield of Texas; three sons, Albert "Buddy" Hicks of King, and Sammy Hicks and George Hicks, both of Pfafftown; 17 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Chaplain Fred Moretz officiating.
Evelyn A. Mimbs
Evelyn A. Mimbs, 88, died June 3 [2002] at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, following several years of declining health.
She was born May 22, 1914, to the late James and Minnie Dorough of Lake Wales, Fla.
She was a longtime resident of Lake Wales.
She was a charter member of Central Avenue Baptist Church, Lake Wales, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Elmer Mimbs, Sr.; three brothers; and three sisters.
Surviving are five sons, Dr. Donald Mimbs and wife Arzetta of Lewisville, William Leon Mimbs and wife Dorothy of Cocoa, Fla., James Byron Mimbs and wife Barbara of Greensboro, Glenn M. Mimbs and wife Connie of Crestview, Fla., and William E. Mimbs, Jr. of Palatka, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; a brother, the Rev. John J. Dorough and wife Corrine of Dover, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside memorial service was held at the Lake Wales Cemetery with Dr. Donald Mimbs and Rev. John J. Dorough officiating.
Mary Lee Covington Tomlinson
Mary Lee Covington Tomlinson, 98, of Winston-Salem, died May 29 [2002] at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born December 23, 1903, in Stokes County, to James Riley and Nancy Evaline Mabe Covington.
She was a member of North Point Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by five sisters; five brothers; and three husbands, Ernest Kiger, Lester Newsom and James Tomlinson.
Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Kiger Hough of Elizabethtown; a son, Ernest Kiger and wife Grace of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Mark Kiger of Covington, La., Scott Kiger of Greenville, and Mikeal Basinger of Laurinburg; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Dr. Judson Milam officiating.
Harvey Ervin Benfield
Harvey Ervin Benfield, 82, of Clemmons, died May 23 [2002] at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons.
Born April 27, 1920, in Bluffton, Ala., he was the son of Harvey Sylvanus and Tressie Timms Benfield.
He was a member of New Bethany Baptist Church in Statesville, and was a retired dry cleaner in Winston-Salem.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Harvey Ervin Benfield, Jr.; two sisters, Ruey Fox and Cleo Dagenhart; and two brothers, Doyle Benfield and Joe Benfield.
Surviving are a daughter, Paula B. Bollinger and husband Charles of Catawba; a son, Larry R. Benfield of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Helen Byers, Lorene Fox and Charlcie Lackey, all of Statesville; three brothers, Ray W. Benfield of Winston-Salem, Harvey S. Benfield, Jr. of Statesville, and Gordon Benfield of Wilkesboro; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at New Bethany Baptist Church, Statesville, with Rev. Bill Mason officiating.
A graveside service was held prior to the memorial service.
Vena Hill Overly
Vena Hill Overly, 89, of Winston-Salem, died May 22 [2002] at Salemtowne Moravian Home.
She was born October 1, 1912, in Union County, to Conrad and Margaret Plyler Baker.
She was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church and married to the late Charles M. Overly.
Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn Hodges and husband Marion of Clemmons; a son, Larry Hill and wife Jane of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a sister, Effie Anderson of Deerfield, Ill.; four grandchildren, Evonne Galloway and husband Greg of Concord, Terri Fortune and husband Eric of Raleigh, Barry Hill and wife Lynda of Fayetteville, and Larissa Jenkins and husband Mike of Lexington, Ky.; and three great-grandchildren, Alicia Galloway of Concord, Ethan Fortune of Raleigh, and Ryan Hill of Fayetteville.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Bill Ireland and Rev. Ty Talton officiating.
A graveside service followed at Lakeview Memorial Park, Greensboro.
Betty Mien Doreen Aston
Betty Mien Doreen Aston, 79, of Burlington, Ontario, Canada, died May 18 [2002].
She was the wife of the late Arthur Edward Aston.
Surviving are her son, Robert Aston and wife Teresa of Lewisville; and a grandson, Andrew Aston.
A memorial service was held at St. Luke's Anglican Church in Burlington, Ontario.
Eva Floyd Robinson
Eva Floyd Robinson, 77, of Winston-Salem, died May 23 [2002] at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following a brief illness.
She was born April 3, 1925, in Whiteville, to the late Joseph H. Floyd and Ruth Hill Floyd.
She was a charter member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons.
She worked at Camp Croft in Holy Ridge, during World War II, at Moore General Hospital in Oteen, and retired from Wachovia Bank & Trust, Winston-Salem.
She was an avid bird-watcher and a member of Forsyth County, Henderson County, and Transylvania County Bird Clubs.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Floyd, and a sister, Sarah Duncan.
Surviving are her husband, Willard C. Robinson, Jr. of the home; a son, Willard C. Robinson, III and wife Donna of Lexington; two grandsons, Andrew Robinson of Greenville, S.C., and Michael Robinson of Hudson, Mich., and a great-grandson; two sisters, Peggy Duncan of Whiteville, and Ellen Gilbert of Wilmington.
A memorial service was held at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Michael Buttner officiating.
