Paul Asbury Norman
Paul Asbury Norman, 73, of Winston-Salem, died May 14 [2002] at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born in Davie County, March 7, 1929, to Gilmer Norman and Maggie Rector Norman.
He was retired from Sara Lee Co. in 1993.
One of his hobbies was salt-water fishing from piers along the coast.
He was a member of Cedar Forest Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ronnie and Roby Creed.
Surviving are his wife, Ruby Vogler Norman of the home; three sisters, Helen Black of Lewisville, and Blanche Loman and Mary Greene, both of Thomasville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with Rev. Brian Parrish, Rev. Charles Vogler and Wayne Rentz officiating.
Burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.

Anne Ashley Bethel
Anne Ashley Bethel of Bermuda Village in Advance, died May 26 [2002].
She was born April 16, 1923, in Abilene, Texas.
She was the founder and owner of the Pickwick Bookstore in Akron, Ohio, and a member of Clemmons United Methodist Church.
A son, Gregory Wilson Bethel, preceded her in death.
Surviving are her husband, Charles A. Bethel, Jr.; a daughter, Rebecca Anne Bethel of Seattle, Wash.; two sons, Charles A. Bethel, III of Bethesda, Md., and Stephen Ashley Bethel of Hillsboro, N.H.; two sisters, Florence Kuhlmann and Alice Costella, both of Solon, Ohio, and seven grandchildren.
A private service was held at Bermuda Village.

Claude Reynolds Denny
Claude Reynolds Denny, 78, of Pfafftown, died May 20 [2002] at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born March 27, 1924, in Surry County,
to the late George and Amanda Matthews Denny.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Jessie Nichols Denny of the home; a daughter, Claudia Denny Vurnakes; two sons, Lee Nichols Denny and Glen Allen Denny; and a brother, Weldon Denny.
A memorial service was held at Ardmore Baptist Church, with Dr. Bill Ireland officiating.

Betty Ann Arnold Spry
Betty Ann Arnold Spry, 59, of Advance, died May 20 [2002] at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
She was born April 21, 1943, in Davie County, to Malcomb and Elizabeth Howard Arnold.
She was a homemaker and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
Surviving are her husband, William "Bill" F. Spry of the home; three daughters, Elizabeth K. Alspaugh and husband Don of Clemmons, Lisa Alspaugh and husband Gene of Advance, Betty Darlene Arnold, and a special friend, Patrick of Farmington; six grandchildren, Chrystal, Angel, Marie, Heather, Brittany and Christian; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Peggy Freeman of Advance; a brother, Jerry Arnold of Florida; and two nephews, Ronnie and Michael Nichols.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

Ethel Hull Norman
Ethel Hull Norman, 90, of Mount Airy, the wife of the late Howard H. Norman, died May 24 [2002] at the Central Continuing Care Nursing Home.
She was born April 4, 1912, in Surry County, to the late Lacy Franklin and Maggie Shelton Hull.
She was a homemaker and member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Geneva Hull and Essie Love; and four brothers, Cleve Hull, Glenn Hull, Bill Hull and J.R. Hull.
Surviving are four sisters, Frances H. Brown and husband Henry of Clemmons, Betty H. Berry of Kernersville and Rachel H. Willard and Louise H. Creed, both of Mount Airy; and a brother, Calvin Hull and wife Merle of Mount Airy.
A graveside service was held at Skyline Memory Gardens with Rev. Gary Leonard officiating.

Nellie Permelia Spencer Garner
Nellie Permelia Spencer Garner, 75, of Lewisville, died at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home May 13 [2002] following months of fighting pancreatic cancer.
She was born in Murray City, Ohio, to the late Clifford Dwight and Florence K. Spencer on September 10, 1926.
She was a mother and homemaker for 16 years and then worked for Turner's Manufacturing Co. in Breman, Ga.
She also lived several years in her beloved Murray City, Ohio, Woodland, Ala., with her son, Greg, and his wife, Brenda, and the last several years in Lewisville, with her youngest son, Glenn, and his wife, Donna.
She loved to crochet and made beautiful items only to give them away to anyone who would tell her how beautiful they were.
She was a member of Concord United Methodist Church in Lewisville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Dow Garner, in 1973; a son, Gerald Dow Garner, Jr., in 1998; and three brothers, Clifford Dwight "Rink", Jr. in 1998, Arthur Spencer in 1999, and Elmer C. Spencer in 2002.
Surviving are three sons, Gary Ralph Garner of Athens, Ohio, Greg Garner and wife Brenda of Woodland, Ala., and Glenn Garner and wife Donna of Lewisville; six grandchildren, Dale Garner, Greg Garner, Jr. and wife Holly, Brian Garner, Mandy Garner, Adam Garner and Matthew Garner, all of Georgia; a great-granddaughter, Christina Lea Mae Garner of Georgia; three step-grandchildren, Cody Spruill, of Alabama, Sissy Nelson and Amy Tise and husband David of Yadkinville; four step-great-grandchildren Austin Slater, J.R. Evans, Jonathan Tise and Jasmine Evans, all of North Carolina; two brothers, Richard Spencer and wife Barbara of Lancaster, Ohio, and Kenneth Spencer and wife Sandy of Tupper Plains, Ohio; sisters-in-law Rita Spencer and Desda Spencer; a former husband, Robert Bowman of College Park, Ga.; and numerous, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held at Murray City United Methodist Church, with Pastor Thomas Albert of Concord United Methodist Church officiating.
Burial followed at Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville, Ohio.

Frances Dillon Elam
Frances Dillon Elam, 84, a resident of Clemmons Village, died May 13 [2002] at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
She was the wife of the late Henry E. Elam and was born October 8, 1917, in Forsyth County, to the late Jasper and Martha Binkley Dillon.
She was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Terry Stephen Elam and wife Mary and William Henry Elam, all of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Lynne Elam Carter and husband Neil of Greensboro; six grandchildren, Leslie Elam Cook of San Diego, Calif., Michael Stephen Elam of Charlotte, Deborah Elam Takacs of Brooklyn, N.Y., Jeffrey Lindon Elam of Denver, Colo., Todd Edward Carter of Seattle, Wash., and Kristi Leigh Carter of Greensboro; four great-grandchildren, Caitlin Brook Carter and Tyler Edward Carter, both of Greensboro, and Amanda Elizabeth Cook and Sydney Marie Cook, both of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Mildred Dillon Livengood of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Bill Ireland officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.

Cullie Marion Holder
Cullie Marion Holder, 91, of Lewisville, died May 16 [2002] at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, after an extended illness.
He was born October 9, 1910, to the late Raymond Thomas and Sarah Kizzie Bryant Holder.
He was a veteran of World War II and a carpenter most of his life.
He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Lillian Pauline Holder; three step-children; 10 step-grandchildren; and 10 step-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Concord United Methodist Church.

Arvil Allen Stanley
Arvil Allen Stanley, 69, of Advance, died May 18 [2002] at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born April 22, 1933, in Surry County, to Lacy Spencer and Cora Casstevens Stanley.
He was retired from Arvil Stanley and Sons Construction Co.
Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn Stanley Vogler of Salisbury; six sons, Spencer Stanley and wife Tanya of Advance, Ricky Stanley and wife Janet of Advance, Geoff Stanley and wife Theresa of Advance, Darrell Stanley and wife Connie of Winston-Salem, David Stanley and wife Angie of Clemmons, and Scott Stanley and wife Julie of Advance; 18 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harold Stanley of Statesville.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel.

Dorothy Whitaker Wright
Dorothy Whitaker Wright, 90, of Winston-Salem, died May 16 [2002] at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was born to Clara Spencer and Lonnie Lafayette Whitaker in Asheboro, April 6, 1912.
She spent most of her life in Asheboro, where she was a founder of the Asheboro-Randolph County library system.
She was instrumental in the creation of the bookmobile program and the establishment of a branch library to serve black residents.
She remained on the library’s board of directors for more than 30 years.
She was active in garden and book clubs and in the First Presbyterian Church of Asheboro.
She was also a member of the Colonial Dames.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Herman Wright; and her brothers, Wiley Martin Whitaker and Dr. Donald Nash Whitaker.
Surviving are her sister, Marjorie Whitaker Barrow of Augusta, Ga.; her son, Dr. John H. Wright of Winston-Salem; her daughter, Sarah Holland and husband James Rockwell Holland of Lewisville; grandchildren Whitney Wright Lewallen and husband Robert Gorman Lewallen, Leslie Miriam Wright, John Douglas Wright, all of Atlanta, Dorothy Brandon Holland of Winston-Salem, Forrest Hobbs Holland of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a great-grandchild, James Patterson Lewallen.
A graveside service was held in Asheboro, with Rev. Jeff White of the First Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem, officiating.
