William Joseph Taylor
William Joseph Taylor, 39, of Clemmons, died February 2 [2002] at Hospice of Winston-Salem.
Surviving are three sisters and two brothers, Sandra T. Wheeler of Alexandria, Va., Patricia T. Greene of Winston-Salem, Susan T. Ellingson of Woodstock, Va., Donald T. Taylor, Jr. of Clemmons, and Kirk P. Taylor of Winston-Salem; a maternal aunt, Elizabeth W. Johnson of Winston-Salem; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A family Rosary and Mass were held at Holy Family Catholic Church.
Ola Doub Matthews Pilcher
Ola Doub Matthews Pilcher, 79, died at Yadkin Nursing Care Center, February 5 [2002] after a period of declining health.
A native of Yadkin County, she was born July 5, 1922, to Leopold Evan and Leona Hutchens Doub.
She was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church in Lewisville.
She was a member of Sharon Homemakers Club and Forsyth County Homemakers Association, where she received a leadership achievement award. For almost 25 years, she taught basket-weaving and chair-caning through Forsyth Community College.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, James Franklin Matthews, in 1970; her brother, Howard Doub; and her sister, Irene Doub Long.
Surviving are her husband, Wilson Pilcher; a daughter, Nancy M. Long and husband Larry; a son, James L. Matthews; a grandson, W. Matthew Long and wife Alissa; two step-grandchildren, Courtney and Jeffrey; two sisters, Ruth D. Shermer and Nell D. Matthews; and numerous other nieces and nephews, Billie Jo Carter and husband Lloyd and June Walker and husband Ronnie.
Funeral services were held at Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend, with Rev. David Cook officiating, and burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery.
Virginia Augusta Sprinkle
Virginia Augusta Sprinkle, 86, of Pfafftown, died at her home February 4 [2002]. .
She was born October 16, 1915, in Forsyth County, to Clinton E. and Mary Virginia Mock Sprinkle.
She lived in Forsyth County, most of her life.
She taught for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System throughout her teaching career, retiring from Jefferson Middle School in 1978.
She was a lifetime member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, where she attended as long as health permitted.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, C. Elwood Sprinkle; and a sister, Grace S. Waugh.
Surviving are a brother, H. Vance Sprinkle and wife Mickey of Pfafftown; three sisters, Martha S. Conrad and husband Gray of Pfafftown, Alma Rose Voss-Sink of Kernersville, and Allene S. Hutchinson and husband Jim of Greensboro; a sister-in-law, Rose Marie Tuttle Sprinkle of Winston-Salem; and seven nieces and five nephews.
A graveside service was held at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery, with Rev. J. Dwight Cartner officiating.
Giovanni Fontana
Giovanni Fontana, 87, of Clemmons, died February 4 [2002] at his home.
Surviving are his wife, Caterina Pupatello.
Funeral services were held in Erie, Pa.
Grace LeNoir Nifong Kimel
Grace LeNoir Nifong Kimel, 87, died February 3 [2002] at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was born March 15, 1914, in Winston-Salem, to Albert E. and Naomi Deal Nifong.
She was a charter member of Konnoak Hills Moravian Church, a member of the Emma Spaugh Bible Class and the Women's Fellowship.
She served as a Sunday school teacher in the primary department for several years, as well as serving in many other capacities as long as her health permitted.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard J. Kimel, in 1987; two sisters, Kathryn Nifong Kestler and Louise Nifong Jones; two brothers, Reece Nifong and Phillip Nifong.
Surviving are her son, Edward C. Kimel and wife Josette of New Orleans, La.; her daughter, Mary Kathryn Bell and husband Billy of Lewisville; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two nieces; two nephews; her sister-in-law, Charlotte Nifong; and her brother-in-law, Ira Jones.
Funeral services were held at Konnoak Hills Moravian Church, with Rev. John Rights officiating, and burial followed in the Moravian Graveyard.
H.C. Moon
H.C. "Charlie" Moon, 68, of Winston-Salem, died February 8 [2002] at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born May 26, 1933, in Toronto, Kan., to Matt Eugene and Mary Belle Lucas Moon.
He was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and he had retired from AT&T; as an engineer.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce of the home; four children, Sharyn Beadle and her husband, Todd, and their sons, Nicholas and Jacob, of Clemmons, Michael W. Moon and his wife, Carol, and their son, Matthew, of Aurora, Ill., David L. Moon and Peter D. Moon, both of Winston-Salem; sisters-in-law Helen Moon, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Diane Bliss of Wichita, Kan.
A funeral mass was held at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, with Father Tice officiating.
Urana Chamberlain DeGraw
Urana "Rainy" Chamberlain DeGraw, 82, of Winston-Salem, died at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, on February 2 [2002].
She was a native of Syracuse, N.Y., and was married to William R. DeGraw, Sr. for 59 years.
He preceded her in death in September 2001.
She had lived in the Wilmington, Del., area for a number of years, as well as in Fayetteville.
She later retired to Winston-Salem, where she was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and Old Town Club.
Surviving are two sons, William R. DeGraw, Jr., Esq. of Lewisville, and Martin C. DeGraw, M.D. of New Bern; a daughter, Joyce D. Forrest of Mount Rainier, Md.; three grandchildren, Jennifer S. DeGraw, Lauren A. DeGraw and William Dylan DeGraw; a nephew, William Chamberlain; and a niece, Susan C. Miller.
A memorial service was held at Centenary United Methodist Church Chapel, with Rev. Roland Barnhardt officiating.
Hattie Meador Sink
Hattie Meador Sink, 94, of Winston-Salem, died January 20 [2002] at the Springwood Care Center of Forsyth.
She was born November 18, 1907, in Franklin County, Va., to William G. and Hattie Calfey Sink.
She was a member of the Red Valley Methodist Church in Rocky Mount, Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Whorley Willard Sink.
Surviving are a son, Willard G. Sink of Clemmons; a daughter, Edwana Long and husband Ron of Reidsville; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters; and three brothers.
A graveside service was held at the Cedarlawn Memorial Park in Roanoke, Va.
Lorenna Love Falls Upchurch
Lorenna Love Falls Upchurch, 85, of Raeford, died February 10 [2002] in the Carolina House of Pinehurst.
She was born in Gastonia, to the late William Howard and Iva Pursley Falls.
She married the late Clyde Emmett Upchurch, Jr. on June 21, 1941.
A member of the Raeford United Methodist Church, she was a counselor with the youth fellowship from 1942 to 1952, WSCS president from 1963 to 1965, Sunday school teacher and Bible leader.
She was president of the Raeford Women's Club from 1954 to 1956, and a Red Cross volunteer with the blood drive in Hoke County.
Surviving are a daughter, Diane Guthrie of Clemmons; two sons, Clyde E. Upchurch, III of Islamoroda, Fla., and David Upchurch of Pinehurst; a brother, David Falls of Clover, S.C.; a sister, Nancy Falls Collin of Plattsburg, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Raeford United Methodist Church, with Rev. Richard Vaughan officiating, and burial followed in the Raeford Cemetery.
Carroll Gray Hendren
Carroll Gray Hendren, 65, of Moravian Falls, died January 26 [2002] at his home.
He was born in Surry County, July 29, 1936, to Ed B. and Zenna Beshears Hendren.
He was a deacon at Bethany Baptist Church and was on the board of directors at First Citizens Bank & Trust.
He was a member of the Ruritan Club, N.C. Apple Growers Association, and Teacher of Prophecy.
Surviving his wife, Betty L. Hendren of the home; a daughter, Misty Hall of Clemmons; three sons, Gregg Hendren and Chad Hendren, both of Moravian Falls, and Justin Hendren of Pisgah Forest; his mother, Zenna Beshears Hendren of North Wilkesboro, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Bethany Baptist Church in the Brushy Mountain Community, with Rev. Don Blevins and Dr. Dean Simpson officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
