Mazie Pope Clopton
Mazie Pope Clopton, 87, of Clemmons, died April 8 [2002].
She was born November 28, 1914, in Gaston County, to Walter and Bessie Clark Pope.
She was formerly employed by P.H. Hanes Knitting Co. and was preceded in death by her husband, James Clopton, in December 1972.
Surviving are four sons, Earl Clopton and wife Martha of Lewisville, Larry Clopton of Summerville, S.C., Gene Clopton of Marietta, Ga., and James Clopton of California; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Rev. Ray Burke officiating, and burial followed in Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
Melvernon Byrd Doub
Melvernon Byrd Doub, 80, of Pfafftown, died April 9 [2002].
She was a greatly loved wife, mother and Me-Maw.
She was born in Duplin County in 1921.
She was a member of Doub's Chapel United Methodist Church
Surviving are her husband, Robert W. Doub of the home; a son, Michael W. Doub and wife Deborah Page; two grandchildren, Jeremiah and Michelle "Mikki" Doub; sisters Esther Johnson of Wrightsville Beach, Dickie McCullen of Wilmington, Eunice Brewer of Ogden, Ann Emery of Paducah, Ky., Ruby Pinuatello of Trinity, Ala., Betty Byrd of Clinton and Dora Lee Byrd of Raleigh; two brothers, Wilbert and wife Lisa Byrd of Baltimore, and Bobby Byrd of Roseboro; a sister-in-law, Jeanette Cook of Winston-Salem; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service was held at Doub’s Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. J. Dwight Cartner officiating.
Hughey H. Thomas
Hughey H. Thomas, 84, of Clemmons, died April 12 [2002] at Meadowbrook Manor Nursing Home.
He was born June 20, 1917, in Forsyth County, to Bertrum Edmund and Sarah Blanche Parks Thomas.
He was a member of Salem Baptist Church for over 70 years, where he taught Sunday school for over 55 years.
He was a retired postal employee with 32 years service.
At retirement, he was assistant station superintendent of Ardmore Station.
He served three terms as president of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II.
He was past president of Mended Heart Association and volunteered at N.C. Baptist Surgical Waiting area for over 25 years.
Surviving are two brothers, John Thomas of Welcome and A.P. Thomas of Lexington; two granddaughters, Christy Jackson and Cheryl Thomas; a grandson, Clay Thomas; and a daughter-in-law, Janice Thomas.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Oma Marlow
Oma Marlow, 93, of Lewisville, formerly of Wilkes County, died April 12 [2002] at Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons.
She was born April 10, 1909, in Wilkes County, to John W. and Nora Anderson Johnson.
Surviving are a son, Norman Marlow of East Bend; a daughter, Bonnie Sapp of Lewisville; three brothers, Lawrence Johnson of Winston-Salem, Wayne Johnson and John Johnson, both of Yadkinville; four sisters, Mae Prevette, Grace Johnson, Vivian Combs, all of North Wilkesboro, and Audrey Jennings of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Lewis Baptist Church, with Rev. Bruce Rhoades and Rev. Vaughn Brown officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Joan Walker Rawe
Joan Walker Rawe, 87, of Clemmons, died April 8 [2002] at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was born in Montgomery County, Tenn., to Burt and Dorothy Allison Walker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hanes W. Rawe; and a granddaughter, Amy Eisenman.
Surviving are two daughters, Judith Fultz of Clemmons, and Gretchen West and husband Ted of Greenville, S.C.; and five grandsons, Ed, Brian and Jeff West and Dan and Robert Eisenman.
A memorial service was held at Clemmons Village II.
Walter Scott Shanks
Walter Scott Shanks, 31, of Clemmons, died unexpectedly April 13 [2002] at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
He was born June 27, 1970, in Davidson County, Tenn., to Joseph L. and Mary Louise Goodwin Shanks.
He was employed with Douglas Battery Co.
Surviving are his wife, Andrea Bass Shanks of the home; two daughters, Britteny-Anne Louise Shanks and Victoria Nicole Shanks; and his parents of Winston-Salem.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Father Conall McHugh officiating.
Marion Gilbert Hayworth
Marion Gilbert Hayworth, 85, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Pfafftown, died April 7 [2002].
She was born October 22, 1916, in Forsyth County, to the late William Oscar and Maude Everidge Gilbert.
She was a member of Becks Baptist Church and was retired from Wake Forest University Book Store.
She loved her family and put them first place in her life.
She loved cooking and was a great cook.
Surviving are her husband, Bruce F. Hayworth, Sr. of the Brian Center; a son, Bruce F. Hayworth, Jr. and wife Sibyl of Pfafftown; a daughter, Marion G. "Gil" Hayworth of Rural Hall; and five grandchildren, Lee Harris, Jill Koch and husband Lee, Susan Clarkson and husband Andrew, Katherine Hayworth and Amanda Hayworth.
Funeral services were held at Becks Baptist Church with Dr. Karl Minor officiating, and burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.
Carolyn Spaugh Lynch
Carolyn Spaugh Lynch, 68, of Clemmons, died April 12 [2002] at her home.
She was born July 28, 1933, in Winston-Salem to Howard T. and Elva Cornish Spaugh.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Cleve Lynch; and a sister, Mae Phelps.
Surviving are two sons, Randall T. Lynch and wife Tanya, and Timothy G. Lynch and wife Dawn, all of Clemmons; a step-granddaughter, Nikki; a sister, Mary Lott and husband Brooks of Clemmons; two brothers, Carol T. Spaugh and wife Shelby of Clemmons, and H. Ray Spaugh and wife Marie of Lexington; a brother-in-law, Howard Phelps of Clemmons; and a special friend, Ruby Byerly.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with Rev. Sammy Shoaf officiating.
Thelma Mae Otis Shepard
Thelma Mae Otis Shepard, 90, of Lewisville, died April 10 [2002] at Brian Center.
She was born May 25, 1911, to John E. and Gertrude Stone Otis in Saugus, Mass.
She lived in Forsyth County, from 1974 and before that in New Hampshire.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert L. Shepard; and a daughter, Joy Skafidas.
Surviving are a granddaughter, Joanne Skafidas of Lewisville; and two grandsons, Bob Skafidas and wife Vickey of Miami, Fla., and John Skafidas and wife Maggie of Berwick, Maine.
Burial will take place at Forest Hill Cemetery, in Derry, N.H., at a later date.
Althea Marguerite Springer Gross
Althea Marguerite Springer Gross of Winaton-Salem, wife of the late James William Gross, died April 3 [2002] at her home.
She is the daughter of the late Ralph Springer and Edna Maria Koehler Springer of Bethlehem, Pa.
She was formerly employed with Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and retired from real estate, having worked with D. Lounsbury, McNames-Sparks and Crowder Realties.
She was a member of Parkway Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are two sons, James Koehler Gross and wife Lucy of Cary, and Ralph Springer Gross and wife Beverly of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Karen M. Gross, Erik S. Gross, Jason R. Gross and James K. Gross, Jr.; her brother, Ralph Springer of Kutztown, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Springer; several nieces and nephews; and numerous close friends; and the staff of Outreach Home Services.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Rev. Jonathan Freeman officiating.
A graveside service was held at St. John's Cemetery-Mickleys, Whitehall, Pa.
