Irene Joyce Goslen
Irene Joyce Goslen, 85, of Lewisville, died February 19 [2002] in Clemmons.
She was born January 22, 1917, in Stokes County, to Frank Joyce and Emma Lee Lawson Joyce.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She retired from Hanes Knitting after working as a winder.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy B. Goslen; three children; and a stepdaughter.
Surviving are a son, Robert Church and wife Martha of Lewisville; two daughters, Peggy Ellis and husband Gene of Clemmons, and Joyce Scott and husband Conrad of Walkertown; a stepson, David Church and wife Sue of Winston-Salem; 12 grandchildren, Robert Ellis, Pamela Aslanis, Peggy Ellis, Portia Byerly, Deborah Hobson, Michael Coe, Rhonda Coe, Christie Eads, Dydra Hester, Greg Scott, Ray Scott and Patty Snyder; four step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Polly Owen of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Dr. Bud Owen officiating, and burial followed at Center Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Clemmons.
Rev. Dr. Vernon Howard Kooy
Rev. Dr. Vernon Howard Kooy, 85, of Winston-Salem, died February 22 [2002].
He was born June 9, 1916, in Maynard, Ind., to Sam and Grace Kooy.
As a minister, he served three churches, the Clover Hill Reformed Church, Clover Hill, N.J., the Far Rockaway Reformed Church, Far Rock Away, N.Y., and the Lodi Reformed Church, Lodi, N.J.
In 1953, he was called to the professorship of New Testament Exegesis at New Brunswick Theological Seminary, New Brunswick, N.J., a seminary of the Reformed Church in America.
He held this position until he retired in 1986.
Numerous times during these 33 years, he served as interim and circuit pastor to churches in N.J., Pa., N.Y.
In 1993, he and his wife, Margot, moved to Winston-Salem.
He was a member of the Clemmons Moravian Church.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Margot, and his children, Vernon Eugene and wife Betty of Hastings, Neb., Craig Arthur, Daryl Glenn of Winston-Salem, Gwyn Ellen Kooy-Smith and husband David of Clemmons, and Brian Keith of Carrollton, Ga.
In addition, he is survived by his sister Mae Anker of Lansing, Ill., and seven grandchildren, Heidi Marie Kooy, Jan Frederick Kooy, Elizabeth Anne Kooy Codel, Whitney Annelises Smith, Pieter Coventry Smith, Camden Jakob Smith and Micah Christian Smith.
Funeral services were held at Clemmons Moravian Church, with Rev. Ray Burke officiating.
Grover Monroe Mitchell
Grover Monroe Mitchell, 74, of Winston-Salem, died February 23 [2002] at Walnut Cove Care Center.
He was born on February 17, 1928, in Surry County, to Wilson and Rosella Draughn Mitchell.
He was a member of Woodland Baptist Church and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy N. Mitchell of Clemmons; two daughters, Debbie Cutrell and husband Norris of Winston-Salem, and Teresa Rad and husband Mehran of Durham; a son, Glenn Mitchell and wife Melissa of Walnut Cove; five grandchildren, Amber Mitchell, Jordan Mitchell, Cyrus Rad, Kaveh Rad and Jahon Rad; and a brother, Jim Mitchell and wife Velna of Dobson.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Memorial Gardens, with Rev. Ron Groce officiating.
Doris Brown Powell Tuttle
Doris Brown Powell Tuttle, 81, of Brian Center in Winston-Salem, died February 17 [2002].
She had been in declining health for the past three years.
She was born in Lewisville, June 19, 1920, to Maggie Crews Brown Jestes and Alpheus Newton Brown.
She lived all her life in Winston-Salem, and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Archie J. Powell; her second husband, Russell W. Tuttle; and most recently by her youngest son, Johnny Ray Powell on Feb. 4, 2002.
Surviving are her daughters, Barbara Funk, Sylvia Powell and Billie Sue Martin, all of Winston-Salem; and her sons, Ronald Powell and wife Jill of Kernersville, and Stephen Powell of Shoreline, Wash.; grandchildren Robin Powell Baker, Renee Minor, Angie French, Lori Martin, Ricky Powell, Scott Powell, Mitchell Powell, John Moser and Corey McGee, as well as a host of great-grandchildren; her sister, Irene Hartman; and nieces Louise, Judy and Kim.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Pastor Ed Sears officiating.

Mildred Johnson Murphy
Mildred Johnson Murphy, 76, of Winston-Salem, died February 14 [2002] at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons.
She was born July 27, 1925, in Wilkes County, to Robert Louis and Easter Mathis Johnson.
She was a charter member of Grace Baptist Temple.
She was preceded in death by a sister; two brothers; and her husband, Raymond E. Murphy.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda Jarvis and husband Charlie of Winston-Salem; a son, Larry Raymond Murphy of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Michelle Jarvis and David Jarvis; two great-grandchildren, Stephanie and Alya Jarvis; three brothers, Robert E. Lee Johnson, Ruben Johnson and Tommy Johnson, all of Winston-Salem; and four sisters, Pauline Bowman of Winston-Salem, Parkie Fulk of Sandy Ridge, Sue Oakley and Rachael Hager, both of Kannapolis.
Funeral services were held at Grace Baptist Temple, with Rev. Ed Sears and Rev. Ron Hawkins officiating, and burial followed in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens
Florence Ellen Frye Humphries
Florence Ellen Frye Humphries, 80, of Winston-Salem, died February 19 [2002] at Forsyth Medical Center, following a period of declining health.
She was born in East Bend, August 28, 1921, to Anderson Frye and Hattie Hancock Frye.
She worked at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. until 1959, and had been a homemaker since then.
She was formerly a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church at the time of her death.
Preceding her in death were her husband, C.G. Humphries in 1974; and two sisters, Thelma Benbow and Alice Quinn.
Surviving are her daughter, Nancy D. Humphries of the home; a brother, Frank W. Frye of Clemmons; and nine nephews and six nieces.
A graveside service was held at East Bend Friends Cemetery, with Rev. J. Marion Rector officiating.
Gertrude Tuttle Ray
Gertrude Tuttle Ray, 81, died January 26 [2002] at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
She was born in Surry County, to Roy and Pearl Gillespie Tuttle on October 9, 1920.
She was retired from Hanes Knitting and Lucia Apparel and worked for K & W Cafeterias, Inc. after her retirement.
She was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her father, Roy Tuttle, and was also preceded in death by her first husband, Robert L. Smith.
Surviving are her husband, Garnett Ray of the home; two sons, Kenneth W. Smith and wife Connie of Clemmons, and Robert Sapp and wife Ruby of Winston-Salem; her mother, Pearl Tuttle of Winston-Salem; a brother, Jack Tuttle of Pinnacle; four grandchildren, Pam, Tammy, Kyle, and Michelle; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Adam.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Rev. Richard Wallace officiating, and burial followed at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Oscar Lee Bishop, Jr.
Oscar Lee Bishop, Jr., 73, of Clemmons, died December 6 [2001] at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born December 26, 1927, in Forsyth County, to Oscar Lee Bishop, Sr. and Merlie Wood Bishop.
He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was an active member of Clemmons United Methodist Church.
He went on several domestic and foreign mission building trips and was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Men.
He was also a member of the Clemmons Civic Club, and was active as an adult leader in scouting for many years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, Allen Bishop.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Ruth Allen Bishop of the home; a daughter, Martha Perez and husband Nick of Roanoke, Va.; two sons, David Bishop and wife Ann Marie of Cary, and Jon Bishop and wife Kellie of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Caroline Bishop, Geoffrey Bishop and Kathryn Perez; three sisters, Lorene Doub of Lewisville, and Peggy Perez and Sharon Harvey, both of Winston-Salem; and a daughter-in-law, Karen Macomson of Chapel Hill.
Funeral services were held at Clemmons United Methodist Church with Rev. David Baxter and Rev. Karla Farabow officiating, and burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
